OBEY TEXAS LAW WHEN PARKING ON THE STREETS

The majority of all car burglaries had valuables visible in their car!! Bags, purse, phones, GPS, laptops, are all invitations to criminals. Do not leave any valuables visible at any time. Please note the following laws apply to all parked vehicles: • Park 30 feet from a stop sign • Park 20 feet from an intersection or crosswalk • Park 15 feet from a fire hydrant • Park no more than 18” from curb • Lock your car when it is parked on the street • Park with the flow of traffic • Do not block driveways or access to mail boxes • No parking on the sidewalks • No more than 48 hours parked on the street • Vehicles parked on street must have current registration and inspection

A NOTE ABOUT SECURITY

There have been a few residential burglaries in and around Cimarron in the past few months. If someone were to knock at the door or ring the bell, while you are home, don’t just ignore them and hope they will go away. Respond to them in some way, to see what they want or to make them go away. If you are not expecting a delivery or any other visitors, you DO NOT have to answer the door. We have suggested that you yell to the door, that you are home and that you have the police on the phone and to please leave your property. If the person at the door refuses to leave your front door, call our dispatcher at 281-463-6666 and have a deputy respond to check the area for the person. Please make sure your property is as secure as possible. Lock all doors and windows properly and add extra locks to windows and patio doors, if possible. If you are not sure about the security of your home, Harris County Constable Pct. 5 has a Home Inspection Program that you can schedule for your home. Sgt. Mitch Hutter is our Home Inspection Officer and is certified by the State of Texas to advise you of additional things you can do to secure your home. This is also a great way to receive a discount on your home insurance rates. Sgt. Hutter can be reached through the same number as our dispatcher. Follow these tips and keep your home safe! Sgt. Higginbotham

Call the Pct5 constable’s office at 281-463-6666 and ask for Sergeant Mitch Hutter J. Goff, Harris County Constable, Precinct Five - Lieutenant Mitchell.hutter@cn5.hctx.net • 281-704-6825

ATTENTION!

Please be careful and slow down while driving through the subdivision; remind your young drivers to do also. Please, be aware of your surroundings and parents, remind your children to watch for vehicles when crossing the street.

PARKED CARS

Please park your vehicles in your garage or at least in your driveway, if at all possible. Please be considerate of your neighbors and the fire trucks on your street. If you must park on the street, be considerate of the neighbor across the street, who must back from a driveway in order to enter the street. As our area has grown, so has the number of vehicles in the subdivision. Most seem to have more than one car per family and some have even more, as the children become

WEST I-10 FIRE DEPARTMENT

Greetings from your friends at the West I-10 Fire Department. We would like to take this opportunity to share some tips with our community as the weather starts to warm up. Pool time is fun time but with lots of fun comes major responsibility. Adults must always accompany children while they are in the pool, turning your back or “just running in the house” for even a moment can have disastrous consequences. Also as the weather starts to warm up please make sure to hydrate yourselves and your family. Heat related incidents are very preventable, remember to take breaks, drink plenty of water and wear appropriate spring clothes.

Did you know that the West I-10 Fire Department is a department you can join? Members come from all walks of life and work together to serve their community. The West I-10 Fire Department is also committed to community involvement and as such would like all our citizens to know the best way to contact us. If you have an emergency, please dial 9-1-1, but if you have a question about the Department or would like to inquire about a public relations event, please dial 281-675-3639 or visit our website at www.westI-10fd.org.

VETERINARY PUBLIC HEALTH LEASH LAW

Animals that are not properly restrained pose a threat to all our residents. While you may know your pet is friendly, an animal running at someone who is walking by is very scary for that person. Many children are afraid of animals and become frightened, which could result in the child getting hurt trying to avoid the animal. Veterinary Public Health (formerly called Harris County Animal Control) advises that “All dogs and cats must be kept under restraint while in the unincorporated areas of Harris County, Texas. The custodian of a dog or cat is not authorized to have, harbor or keep any unlicensed dog or cat nor to allow any dog or cat to become a stray.” Restraint is defined as “the control of a dog or cat under the following circumstances: 1. When it is controlled by a line or leash not more then six (6) feet in length, if the line or leash is held by human being who is capable of controlling or governing the dog or cat in question or 2. When it is within a fully enclosed vehicle or 3. When it is on the premise of the custodian and the animal does not have access to sidewalk to street.” While it may be nice to have your animal out in the yard while you work or play, it is against the law, unless the animal is properly restrained.

KATY ISD’S 16TH ANNUAL PROMISE TO READ

Community members from Katy and the surrounding area recently stopped what they were doing to read to students in more than 375 classes as part of Katy ISD’s 16th annual Promise to Read program. Through Promise to Read, volunteers promise to spend 30 minutes reading to an elementary classroom during two weeks in November. This year, 10 Katy ISD elementary campuses hosted the event with Partners in Education: Cimarron, Creech, Franz, Golbow, Exley, Rhoads, Rylander, Williams, Wilson and Winborn Elementary Schools. Host campuses rotate each year so that, over a three-year period, every Katy ISD elementary has an opportunity to participate. Readers represented a cross section of local companies and organizations including: American Kids Athletics, AXA Financial Advisors, Brazos Valley Schools Credit Union, BP America, Inc., CenterPoint Energy, Chick-fil-A of Katy, College Nannies and Tutors of Katy, Cinco Ranch Conservatory of Music, ExxonMobil, First Victoria Bank, Grand Vision Center, Hasta La Pasta, H-E-B Katy Market, Herff Jones Graduation Center, Katy Area Chamber of Commerce, Katy Family YMCA, Members Choice Credit Union, Omni Houston Hotel Westside, Pediatric Dentists of Katy, Pepper Lawson Construction, Rainforest Café, The Shady Lady Window Coverings, Tradition Bank, Wood Group and more.

OFFICER TAYLOR JOINS THE KATY ISD POLICE FORCE

During the November Board Work Study meeting, Officer Shannon Taylor was sworn in to serve on the Katy ISD Police Force. Officer Taylor’s law enforcement experience includes having served as a police officer for the Delphi, Indiana Police Department and Purdue University. Officer Taylor is a graduate from the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy and has been an officer for more than 14 years. After serving for Purdue and Delphi, Officer Taylor served three years as a police officer at Rice University. She resides in Katy with her husband, John Taylor and her daughter. Katy ISD peace officers are licensed and certified by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officers Standards and Education. The Katy ISD police jurisdiction includes all territory within the boundaries of the District (181 square miles) and all property, real and personal, outside the boundaries of the District that is owned, leased or rented by the District or otherwise under the District’s control. Peace officers employed by Katy ISD have the same authority, powers, privileges and immunities as bestowed on all Texas peace officers while on or off duty. For more information about the Katy ISD Police Department, visit www.katyisd.org/police.

The Katy ISD Education Foundation is pleased to announce that BP America has joined the organization as a Cornerstone Investor by contributing $50,000 for STEM-related teacher grants. The BP STEM Grant Program will be administered via the foundation’s Inspiring Imagination teacher grant initiative.
