PARKED CARS

Please park your vehicles in your garage or at least in your driveway, trucks on your street. If you must park on the street, be considerate of the neighbor across the street, who must back from a driveway in order to enter the street. As our area has grown, so has the number of vehicles in the subdivision. Most seem to have more than one car per family and some have even more, as the children become driving age. Please try to be considerate of others who try to navigate between the cars that are left on the street. Children darting into the street or riding bicycles are more easily seen with less parked cars blocking the view of them. Thank you for your cooperation.

Greetings from your friends at the West I-10 Fire Department. We would like to take this opportunity to share some tips with our community as the weather starts to warm up. Pool time is fun time but with lots of fun comes major responsibility. Adults must always accompany children while they are in the pool, turning your back or “just running in the house” for even a moment can have disastrous consequences. Also as the weather starts to warm up please make sure to hydrate yourselves and your family. Heat related incidents are very preventable, remember to take breaks, drink plenty of water and wear appropriate spring clothes. Did you know that the West I-10 Fire Department is a department you can join? Members come from all walks of life and work together to serve their community.

Animals that are not properly restrained pose a threat to all our residents. While you may know your pet is friendly, an animal running at someone who is walking by is very scary for that person. Many children are afraid of animals and become frightened, which could result in the child getting hurt trying to avoid the animal. Veterinary Public Health (formerly called Harris County Animal Control) advises that “All dogs and cats must be kept under restraint while in the unincorporated areas of Harris County, Texas. The custodian of a dog or cat is not authorized to have, harbor or keep any unlicensed dog or cat nor to allow any dog or cat to become a stray.” circumstances: 1. When it is controlled by a line or leash not more then six (6) feet in length, if the line or leash is held by human being who is capable of controlling or governing the dog or cat in question or 2. When it is within a fully enclosed vehicle or 3. When it is on the premise of the custodian and the animal does not have access to sidewalk to street.” While it may be nice to have your animal out in the yard while you work or play, it is against the law, unless the animal is properly restrained. Let’s all help keep our community a safe and comfortable place for all our residents by being responsible pet owners. This will not only protect anyone who may be walking or bicycling in the area, but also the pet owner who could be held legally responsible or possibly sued for failing to properly restrain their pet.

GIFTED STUDENTS BECOME ARCHEOLOGISTS DIGGING FOR TREASURE More than 1,300 gifted students from every KISD elementary campuses visited the Katy Outdoor Learning Center over a two-week period to spend a day being archeologists. In budget conscious times, KISD and Katy Parents of Gifted and Talented (KPGT) joined forces to create a fantastic opportunity to put months of class research into practice. Specially prepared archeological pits were an unending source of fascinating artifacts leading students to hypothesize why bones, beads, arrowheads and other items may be discovered. Energetic geo-caching scavenger hunts through the woodlands introduced how archeologists use new technology. Archeology experts volunteered their time and knowledge to take students around the world on a virtual tour of ancient civilizations.

Wild Bear run to Benefit Kids facing life threatening illness

Who: When: June 9, 2012 Why: When visiting hours are over, children in hospitals with lifethreatening illnesses are alone, with no one to comfort them. A gift need in these lonely times… a reminder of those who love them and want them to overcome their illnesses. We have given thousands of bears to hospitals like Shriner’s and MD Anderson; but the need is always present.

Students will learn how to think outside of the box and create unique characters with interesting stories. The author, Melissa Williams, will discuss the way she used her own experiences with her pets to create the fictional characters in Iggy the Iguana and Turtle Town series while teaching the use of archetypes, conflict resolution and original storyline development tactics. Students will learn how to bring their own ideas to life through words and illustrations as professional illustrator Ryan Shaw explains the process of connecting to the author’s characters with art. During the week, the students will have the opportunity to use their newly learned skills to come up with their own character and develop a unique short story that will be eligible for publication in the “I Write Short Stories by Kids for Kids contest.
