STAYING POSITIVE DURING THE HOLIDAY SEASON

‘Tis the season to be jolly, but all too often we ﬁnd ourselves feeling stressed out rather than joyful this time of year. Though the holiday season can be stressful at times, it is important to remember the true reason for the season and to stay positive. It seems year after year Thanksgiving is the kickoff to a season of greed and discontentment. Just hours after ﬁnishing the Thanksgiving meal, people rush out to begin the frenzy of holiday shopping, overspending, and complaining. So many people spend the holidays comparing themselves to others and are disappointed when they feel like they don’t measure up to those around them. We complain about the lack of square footage and not enough oven space while preparing a feast for our families, meanwhile forgetting that millions of people are going to bed hungry and homeless each night. One excellent way to stay positive during the holiday season is to get involved with a local charity. Whether you spend a day feeding the homeless or giving out toys to local children, seeing how other people live will open your eyes to how truly fortunate you are. Getting the entire family involved can be a wonderful learning opportunity for children. Seeing so many kids who don’t get presents makes it awfully hard to complain about not getting exactly what you wanted on Christmas morning. Another key practice to staying positive is to stop comparing yourself to others. Everyone has a different idea of how the holidays should be. Don’t feel disheartened when your family doesn’t decorate as elaborately as the house next door. After all, happiness is not related to the size of your Christmas tree or the number of presents under it.

Remember the true meaning of the season and don’t get overwhelmed by the details associated with this time of year. The heart of the holidays is love and peace. Rather than getting stressed out by holiday trafﬁc, long lines at the mall, or maxing out your credit card, focus on showing love and compassion to the people around you. Shopping during the holiday season can present unique danger. Taking a few prevention measures can help keep your holiday season joyous. The holiday season is a time when busy people can become careless and vulnerable to theft and other holiday crime. The following tips from the Los Angeles Police Department Crime Prevention Section can help you be more careful, prepared and aware during the holiday season. 1. Shop during daylight hours whenever possible. If you must shop at night, go with a friend or family member. 2. Dress casually and comfortably. 3. Avoid wearing expensive jewelry. 4. Do not carry a purse or wallet, if possible. 5. Always carry your driver’s license or identiﬁcation along with necessary cash, checks and/or a credit card you expect to use. 6. Even though you are rushed and thinking about a thousand things, stay alert to your surroundings. 7. Avoid carrying large amounts of cash. 8. Pay for purchases with a check or credit card when possible. 9. Keep cash in your front pocket. 10. Notify the credit card issuer immediately if your credit card is lost, stolen or misused. 11. Keep a record of all of your credit card numbers in a safe place at home.

Just one quart of motor oil can ruin the quality of 250,000 gallons of water. Decomposing leaves and grass clippings can cause large amounts of algae to grow which depletes the oxygen level in the water and can lead to fish kills. • If a long ﬂowering period is desired, pansies should be placed in their permanent beds not later than this month. Fertilize monthly with manure, super-phosphate or a liquid high-phosphate product. Keep ﬂowers picked for more bloom. • Take tulips out of cold storage and plant late this month. • Fertilize established trees, spring-blooming shrubs, spurias and sweet peas (after they are a foot tall) with a fertilizer such as 13-13-13; Louisiana iris with cotton seed meal and manure. • Azaleas and camellias may be moved now. Keep moist to lesson cold weather damage. May acidify again. • Last month to plant early blossoming spring bulbs, speciosum and other varieties of lilies. In the ﬁfth year of having an FFA program, Faith West Academy went to the Harris County Fair (October 13th-17th) well prepared and came home with scholarships, belt buckle, ribbons, trophies and merchandise. The Texas FFA is the nation’s largest state FFA association with a membership of more than 106,000 and more than 1,045 local FFA chapters. Faith West Academy, cosponsored by Ryan Cummins and Kristin Baker, is only 1 of 3 private schools in the Texas that hosts this curriculum. Williams, READ3Zero has embarked on a mission to help share aspects of the literacy and publishing world, inﬂuencing the lives of children to learn outside the classroom. The Express Book Stop is a student run book store set up to promote reading in all grade levels. All earnings go toward purchasing more books to put in the hands of children. Each year fourth grade students are nominated to be interviewed to work at the Express Book Stop. Once students are chosen, they work every Tuesday and Thursday morning from 7:45 AM-8:15 AM from September to May. The Express Book Stop carries chapter and picture books for all age groups. FIRST ANNUAL WOMEN’S QUARTER MARATHON EVENT

January 9, 2016 The 2016 Women’s Quarter Marathon is a women’s-only race to empower women and young girls through ﬁtness and a healthy lifestyle. The route will start at Central Green Park, run through Cinco Ranch and back to Central Green Park where the post-race party will take place. The distance is a quarter of a marathon, which is 6.55 miles. The Mini-Quarter Marathon is 1.25 miles and is designed for girls under the age of 13 who also want to join the movement. 2015 November 27-December 20, 2015: “It’s a Wonderful Life” George Bailey spends his life giving up big dreams on behalf of his community. Overwhelmed by family obligations, George uncovers an opportunity to save his town but a mistake ﬁnds himself in a disparaging situation. George’s guardian angel, Clarence, who hasn’t earned his wings, takes George on a journey to discover his “wonderful life.” All performances are on the HFAC Garza Mainstage, recently named “Houston’s Best Gem of a Theatre” by the Houston Press, except for Peter Pan, which will be performed at the Berry Center.

Misc. Events NATURE PROGRAMS FOR PRESCHOOL-AGED CHILDREN

The Titmouse Club is a nature program for children ages 2 ½ to 5 sponsored by the Houston Audubon Docent Guild. The program is offered every Tuesday and Wednesday morning, 10 to 11 AM, from mid-September until mid-May at the Edith L. Moore Nature Sanctuary, 440 Wilchester Boulevard. Each week features a different nature theme and may include nature talks, stories, hands-on activities and walks in the woods. Join us December 5th for a family classic. Holiday on the Plaza is partnering with Katy Market Days for A Katy Old-Fashioned Christmas. The events will start at noon and the official lighting of the City Christmas Tree will begin at 6 PM at Harvest Plaza. DECIBELLES (A BARBERSHOP CHORUS)

Do you like to sing? Are you looking for a place to display your talents or just to have fun with music? You should be a Decibelle! We are a (ladies only) daytime chorus rehearsing every Friday morning from 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM, at the Treemont Retirement Center, 2501 Westerland, near Westheimer and Gessner. Some of us read music, but it is not required. We are provided a CD to help in learning new songs. Our director, Martha Upton and assistant director, Cay Eckland will help you ﬁnd out if you are a Tenor, Lead, Baritone or Bass. We have been performing in the Houston area for over 38 years. We prepare two types of shows each year; a Christmas show with old favorites, but always a new fun tune including props, narratives and choreography. Our regular show this year is titled “Through the Years” We are singing songs from 1900 and every decade after that. GRACE NOTES

Singers, dancers and Instrumentalists are invited to join the “Grace Notes” a performing group which shares music with the elderly in retirement homes, Alzheimer’s and nursing facilities and community events. We sing a combination of secular, patriotic and sacred music. We also sing once a month on Sunday morning for the congregation of St. Peter’s UMC. The work of our dedicated volunteers helps guarantee that children and adults with disabilities in the Greater Houston Area will have the programs they need to live longer, healthier, more productive lives. In addition to their weekly work in the arena, many of our volunteers donate their time and talents at fund-raising events such as our annual Ride-A-Thon and the yearly Trailblazers Luncheon. Volunteers are on hand during the NARHA on-site certiﬁcation and annual SIRE Show-Off and volunteers are vital to our Clients’ successes at the Top Hands Horse Show, during the Houston Rodeo and competition at the regional and state Special Olympics. STANDUP FOR KIDS

How would you feel if you saved a kid’s life? StandUp For Kids is an all volunteer organization dedicated to saving the lives of at-risk and homeless kids through volunteer outreach efforts. Our volunteers search the streets in order to ﬁnd, stabilize and otherwise help homeless and street kids improve their lives. Every day throughout the US thirteen kids die on the streets from abuse, disease and suicide. According to recent statistics Houston has up to 2,500 kids living on the streets at any given time. Texas has the highest rate of homeless youth in the U.S. StandUp For Kids needs supplies for our Houston program, which provides food, clothing, counseling and a safe environment for the homeless youth of Houston.
