National Charity League, Inc. Lady Bird Chapter proudly honored the 2016 graduating class at its Senior Presentation Ceremony at the Westchase Marriott on January 31, 2016. The 18 seniors and their mother’s volunteered more than 4,628 hours at Katy area philanthropies over the past six years. This is the first class that has completed all six years with the Lady Bird Chapter since the Chapter was formed in 2010.

funds for a worthy cause,” said Brian Haines, YMCA Vice President of Operations. “One hundred percent of proceeds from our event go to help provide Y programs and services to Katy area families. This year, I am proud to announce that the Turkey Dash was able to net over $205,000. Every penny of that money will go back into the community in the form of program scholarships and community outreach subsidies.” The event was the brainchild of leaders from the Y and The Fellowship wishing to organize a large-scale holiday event to promote community bonding. The race has grown by leaps and bounds over the years to become the area’s premiere fun run. In addition to the running events, participants enjoyed a large post race area which included many local businesses who provided refreshments. There was also a Kids Zone complete with a rock wall, moonwalks, face painting and games. 10K winners were: Overall Male: Max Miller with a time of 34:18, Overall Female: Angela Vega with a time of 41:05, Overall Masters Male: A.J. Terrell with a time of 38:52 and Overall Masters Female: Suzy Seeley with a time of 45:59. 5K awards went to: Overall Male: Nathan Gift with a time of 16:07, Overall Female: Heidi Nielson with a time of 18:20, Overall Masters Male: Stephen Bernard with a time of 18:40 and Overall Masters Female: Anita Deuel with a time of 23:42. Santikos Theatres is a movie theater chain based in San Antonio, Texas, USA. The company has expanded to seven local theaters in the greater Houston area. In 2014, ownership of the chain was passed to the San Antonio Area Foundation upon John Santikos’ death and the company is carrying on the legacy of supporting nonprofits. Hope For Three is filled with gratitude and humbled to have received a $5,000 check that will go towards the end of year giving campaign. The check was presented to Matt Jackson, Executive Director at Hope For Three by Staci Smith, Director of Marketing and Events at Santikos Palladium in Richmond, Texas. Hope For Three addresses the urgent need to provide support, including financial assistance to children with an autism disorder.

FBA STUDENT MAKES FIRST CHAIR TROMBONE AT ALL-STATE
First Baptist Academy’s Kevin Beck-Perez was selected as the first chair trombone student at this year’s 2015 All-State middle school band competition hosted by the Association of Texas Small School Bands (ATSSB). Auditions were held on November 7, 2015 at Sealy High School. Students selected to be in the honor band attended an all-day clinic followed by a concert the following Saturday in Bellville, Texas.

The competition began with blind auditions. Students individually played prepared music that consisted of several scales and excerpts from two music selections for three to four judges in a closed room. Students were scored, ranked and subsequently selected to play in the region band for the following weekend based on their audition performance.

KATY ISD BOARD OF TRUSTEES APPROVES 2016-2017 ATTENDANCE BOUNDARY MODIFICATION
The Katy ISD Board of Trustees voted to approve an attendance boundary modification (ABM) designed to address the opening of three new campuses and alleviate overcrowding at campuses landlocked with 125 percent capacity. This ABM will provide much-needed relief to Rylander and West Memorial elementary schools, as well as, balance enrollment as the District prepares to open two elementary schools and one junior high next school year. During this entire process, the District welcomed feedback from the community through an online survey. Nearly 9,000 parents, staff and community members completed the survey and dozens shared their feedback during the open forum at various Board meetings. These comments helped shape the ABM and addressed major needs and concerns cited by parents and community. The District presented to the Board a preliminary ABM proposal on November 16th and then an updated option on December 7th to better address the overcrowding at West Memorial Elementary. The Board approved the updated ABM option on December 14th. The District estimates that approximately 3,600 students will be impacted by the approved attendance boundary modifications. Katy ISD will be notifying all impacted families in January/February 2016. The Katy ISD Education Foundation is inviting parents, businesses and community members to contribute to its teacher grant initiative by becoming a Foundation Investor or making a one-time donation. The Foundation’s annual Inspiring Imagination teacher grant program awards funds to teachers to implement classroom projects that engage and excite Katy ISD students. Formed in 2013 to support creative classroom programs in Katy ISD schools, the Foundation has awarded more than $500,000 to teachers throughout the district, enriching the learning experience for more than 65,000 Katy ISD students.

Each spring, teachers are invited to apply for a grant through a competitive, three-step evaluation process. Submissions are judged by community volunteers. This year’s grant application process launched in November with teacher grant applications due March 30, 2016. Grants will be awarded in May 2016 for the 2016-2017 school year.

KATY HIGH SCHOOL HEAD COACH SELECTED FOR TEXAS HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL HALL OF FAME
Katy High School’s Head Football Coach Gary Joseph, was recently selected as a 2016 inductee into the Texas High School Football Hall of Fame. Coach Joseph, along with eight other inductees, were announced on Saturday, December 19th at NRG Stadium. Coach Joseph began his coaching career at Luling High School 37 years ago. After advancing in jobs at Brazosport and Austin Westlake, he then moved to Katy High School, where he has served for 33 years. He was the KHS defensive coordinator and then assistant head coach for 22 years before becoming the KHS head coach in 2004. During his tenure as head coach, he has led the Katy Tigers to eight state final games with three of those appearances resulting in 6A State Championships. His current coaching record stands at 167-14. While individual and team accolades are greatly appreciated and honored, Coach Joseph also strives to build a strong group of student athletes who recognize, through the actions of their head coach, the necessity for integrity, loyalty and the value of leading oneself and others through life’s victories with humility and hardships with grace. The induction banquet will be held on May 7, 2016 in Waco, Texas.

BECK JUNIOR HIGH HOSTS 2ND ANNUAL POETRY SLAM
On Monday, December 14th and Tuesday, December 15th, Beck Junior High sixth graders “shaped their drape” beatnik style at the Second Annual Beck Junior High Sixth Grade Poetry Slam in culmination of their poetry unit. At the Slam, students read poetry of their choice and listened to cool jazz while sipping on donated hot beverages in the transformed library, AKA “Starbeck’s Café.” A great time was had by all!

CINDERELLA SIGHTING IN KATY TEXAS AT BECK JUNIOR HIGH
Beck Junior High’s Beck Backstage program recently delivered yet another fabulous theatre production - Cinderella! Director Stephen Sisk, who has taught at Beck for 7 years and directed 13 shows, brought the classic to the stage along with the support of volunteer Producer Teri Ward. Cinderella’s production was no small feat - it involved 139 students, 67 in the cast and 72 in the “behind the scenes” crew. Cinco Ranch High School’s Advanced Welding class made beautiful metalwork for the carriage used in the show, working with parent chairs Sherry Rice and Karen Pollard who constructed the base. Beck’s Orchestra played before both shows. And as an added bonus, Brookwood Community brought special visitors to the dress rehearsal performance.

BASEBALL - T-BALL, COACH, MACHINE & KID PITCH We would like to invite children from 4 yrs. (as of Sept. 1, 2015) to 13 years old to join us as we enjoy another season of T-Ball, Coach, Machine and Kid Pitch. We look forward to teaching your children the skills and watching them enhance their abilities. We will offer several evaluations (skills assessment) days so we can check on their skill level and even out the teams. The first evaluation will be Monday, Tuesday and Thursday Nights, February 22nd, 23rd and 25th, between 5-6:30 PM. The last evaluation will be Saturday, February 27th between 9-11 AM. It only takes a few minutes for us to run them through the drills and then we will contact each player the week before they begin practices. After Monday, February 29th, we cannot guarantee a place on a team. They will practice for one hour a week on a Monday, Tuesday, Thursday or Friday. Practices begin the week of March 21st and the league runs through May 21st. The early cost will be $80 for those registering before February 23rd. After February 23rd, the cost will be $90. Registration will begin January 1st.

FORWARD BASKETBALL - HIGH SCHOOL GUYS Be a part of one of our basketball leagues. Practice/Games will be on Monday, Tuesday or Thursday nights. Evaluations to help set the teams will be February 29th, March 1st, 3rd, 7th, 8th & 10th from 6:30-8:30 PM in our Gym. Practices begin the week of March 21st and the league runs through May 5th. The cost of Forward Basketball is $25. Last year there was such a great response so register early and pay to reserve your spot. Registration will start February 1st. MEN’S OUTWARD FLAG FOOTBALL Come join men 18 yrs and older for our men’s Outward Flag Football league coming this spring. Practice/Games will be on Saturday afternoons around 2 PM. The league will have a tournament at the conclusion of the season. Evaluations for all players will be Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, March 14th, 15th and 17th from 6-7 PM and Saturday, March 19th from 10:30-11:30 AM. These will take place on the fields behind the church. Cost for the league will be $40 per player covering cost of officials and jersey. “What’s wrong with this picture?” is the playful theme and question attached to each show in Houston Family Arts Center’s (HFAC) 2015-2016 season. Entering its 10th mainstage season, HFAC orchestrated a line-up of allencompassing shows that highlight the theatre’s award-winning musical expertise, all while enveloping theatre experiences full of odd, zany, mystical and dramatic turmoil audiences love. The first half of the season as follows: 2016 January 29th-February 21st: “Forever Plaid” On their way to see the Beatles’ American debut on The Ed Sullivan Show, a quartet of high school friends’ musical dreams begin and quickly end after a car crash involving a busload of Catholic schoolgirls. March 11th-April 3rd: “Harvey” What do you get when you mix a polite and friendly man with a strange, sixfoot-tall, invisible rabbit named Harvey? A sister who wants to commit her brother, but gets committed herself and a town comically turned upside down on the search for a mild-mannered hero and his invisible friend. All performances are on the HFAC Garza Mainstage, recently named “Houston’s Best Gem of a Theatre” by the Houston Press, except for Peter Pan, which will be performed at the Berry Center.

The Titmouse Club is a nature program for children ages 2 ½ to 5 sponsored by the Houston Audubon Docent Guild. The program is offered every Tuesday and Wednesday morning, 10 to 11 AM, from mid-September until mid-May at the Edith L. Moore Nature Sanctuary, 440 Wilchester Boulevard. Each week features a different nature theme and may include nature talks, stories, hands-on activities and walks in the woods. We are a (ladies only) daytime chorus rehearsing every Friday morning from 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM, at the Treemont Retirement Center, 2501 Westerland, near Westheimer and Gessner. Some of us read music, but it is not required. We are provided a CD to help in learning new songs. Our director, Martha Upton and assistant director, Cay Eckland will help you find out if you are a Tenor, Lead, Baritone or Bass. We have been performing in the Houston area for over 38 years. We prepare two types of shows each year; a Christmas show with old favorites, but always a new fun tune including props, narratives and choreography. Our regular show this year is titled “Through the Years” We are singing songs from 1900 and every decade after that. Singers, dancers and Instrumentalists are invited to join the “Grace Notes” a performing group which shares music with the elderly in retirement homes, Alzheimer’s and nursing facilities and community events. We sing a combination of secular, patriotic and sacred music. We also sing once a month on Sunday morning for the congregation of St. Peter’s UMC. FAMILY READING CLUB - JANUARY 24TH-MARCH 5TH
This six-week program is designed to encourage families to read, learn and have fun together. Families participate in the program by reading books and completing optional “challenges” that can be done at home. All Fort Bend County families are eligible to participate. Families who complete the program by reading 36 books or for 6 hours - 6 books per week or for 60 minutes per week - are eligible to receive a book bag for the family and will have their named entered into a drawing for a $50 dining gift card, donated by the Friends of the Library. Each branch library will have a drawing for the gift card on March 7th. A single registration is required for each participating family. An adult (parent or guardian) is asked to register the family online by going to the library’s website (www.fortbend.lib.tx.us) and clicking on the “Family Reading Club Sign-Up” image, which became available January 24th. Families may also register at one of the libraries in the Fort Bend County library system. Upon registering, families will then have their own online page on which to record their books or reading time. There is no charge to join the Family Reading Club. The program is sponsored by Fort Bend County Libraries and the Friends of the Library organizations that support the county library system.

When foster children reach age 18, they are considered independent. That’s difficult for kids who have been wards of the state, with necessities arranged by caseworkers with state funds. Fortunately, Child protective Services offers them a program to help prepare for independence: Preparation for Adult Living (PAL). The year-long course culminates in an all-day workshop hosted by the National Council for Jewish Women (NCJW). The course is held at Junior Achievement’s BizTown, using computer kiosks sponsored by local businesses. The disclosure of a loved one’s homosexuality affects parents, family members and friends in many different ways. Dealing with a reality that may never have been anticipated can be challenging. St. Peter’s United Methodist Church is offering a safe and affirming setting for those who desire understanding and support as they seek to come to terms with this fact. MYC - MOTHERS OF YOUNG CHILDREN
We are a biblically based group of mothers with young children, infant through elementary school, along with mentor moms (more experienced, older moms), who share the joys and frustrations of motherhood and explore the purposes and promises God gives to parents. Our curriculum consists of a Mom-to-Mom Bible study every other week and missions, socials and play dates on the off weeks. We meet every Friday from 9-11:30 AM and follow the KISD school calendar.
