HOUSTON GULF COAST CHAPTER OF MDA RECEIVES $224,363 FROM KROGER AFTER SUCCESSFUL SHAMROCK CAMPAIGN
The Southwest Division of Kroger will present the Houston Gulf Coast Chapter of the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) with a check for $224,363 resulting from their annual Shamrock campaign. The check presentation took place at the Kroger at 1440 Studemont Street on May 7th. On hand to accept the check was Karla Hoskin, Executive Director at MDA, “We were overwhelmed by the support and effort of Kroger management and employees on this year’s campaign.” Representing Kroger was Joy Partain, Public Affairs Manager, “Kroger’s customers are faithful supporters of MDA year after year and we’re grateful to them and also to our associates. Over the last decade, our customers have donated over $1 million during our annual MDA shamrock campaigns.” The money raised will help fund services and research programs, including MDA’s outpatient clinics at Texas Children’s Hospital and Houston Methodist. Funding will also go towards sending 100 youngsters, ages 6 - 17, to MDA’s annual summer camp, which takes place June 6th - 13th at Camp for All in Burton, Texas. MDA summer camp is a week filled with bonding, growth, acceptance and fun. In addition to knowledgeable camp staff and medical personnel, each camper has his or her own one-on-one volunteer counselor, who helps with all aspects of both fun and personal care. “It’s the best week of the year” said Sydney Horak, a MDA camper.

process to apply is simple. Families complete the online application, which includes questions about themselves and local high school, references and a background check. Once the application is submitted, the local Ayusa Community Representative will conduct an in-home interview. They can also help each family with any questions they may have about the application or process. After families are fully approved, they can select the Ayusa student they would like to host.

July 2015
On April 25, 2012, Lindsay Laneigh Ferrill’s life was taken in a horrific dating violence incident. Her mother, Shari Nightingale, and Lindsay’s family and friends have met for years in an effort to honor Lindsay’s life by helping others. Thanks to a recent partnership, Lindsay’s Light Fund was developed as a way to better prevent dating violence. Now Lindsay’s story is an important part of the Shield Bearer Dating Violence Prevention curriculum and with your help we are spreading this crucial prevention program to a larger number of high school students. In 2007, Shield Bearer responded to a local high school experiencing a high number of dating violence incidents. Since then the highly effective Dating Violence Prevention Program has been delivered to over 20,000 students in high schools, churches and community centers. The limiting factor has always been funding. Shield Bearer is a 501c3 nonprofit celebrating 10 years of providing professional counseling services to human traffic victims, crime victims, veterans and military families and individual couples and families. Shield Bearer also provides community based prevention programs and services in schools, churches and community organizations. In 2014, Shield Bearer served 15,207 people in the Greater Houston area. For more information, you can check out www.ShieldBearer.org and click on the Join the Fight button or contact us at 281-894-7222.

PROTECT STORM DRAINS
Just one quart of motor oil can ruin the quality of 250,000 gallons of water. Decomposing leaves and grass clippings can cause large amounts of algae to grow which depletes the oxygen level in the water and can lead to fish kills. The blowing, sweeping or dumping of grass clippings and other pollutants down the storm drain is against Texas State Law punishable by a fine of $5,000 for each offense. PLEASE CALL 281-398-8211 TO REPORT OFFENDERS.

• Adapt your watering schedule to the weather and the season. Familiarize yourself with the settings on your irrigation controller and adjust the watering schedule regularly. • Schedule watering for each zone separately. For each area, take into account type of sprinkler, sun or shade exposure, soil type and plant requirements. • Inspect your system monthly. Check for leaks, broken or clogged heads and other problems orengage a certified irrigation professional to regularly check your system. Clean microirrigation filters as needed. • Adjust sprinkler heads. Remove obstructions that prevent sprinklers from distributing water evenly and make sure you’re watering plants, not sidewalks or buildings. • Have your system audited. Hire a professional to conduct an irrigation audit and uniformity test to make sure each zone is being watered evenly. • Install an inexpensive rain shutoff switch. Required by law in many states, these money-saving sensors prevent watering in rainy weather and can be retrofitted to almost any system. • Consider “smart” technology. Climate or soil moisture sensor-based controllers evaluate weather or soil moisture conditions and then automatically adjust the watering schedule to meet the specific needs of your landscape. • Think about low-volume drip irrigation for plant beds. Install microirrigation for gardens, trees and shrubs to minimize evaporation and runoff. Options include drip (also known as trickle), micro-spray jets, micro-sprinklers and bubbler irrigation. • Water at the right time of day. Watering when the sun is low, winds are calm and temperatures are cooler minimizes evaporation by as much as 30 percent. The best times to water are late afternoon, evening and just before sunrise.

• Water more often for shorter periods. Setting your system to run for two, 5-minute intervals lets soil absorb more water than watering for 10 minutes at one time. • Water only when needed. Saturate root zones and let the soil dry. Overwatering results in shallow roots and encourages weeds, disease and fungus growth. GARDEN TIPS FOR JULY
• Plant fall flowering annuals where your spring annuals have bloomed out. Set our seeds like zinnia, marigold, cosmos, petunia and portulaca so you’ll have color until frost. Don’t let seedlings dry out. • In summer, prune roses to keep them in shape. Continue black spot and insect treatments. Water 2” once per week. • Remove spent crepe myrtle flowers to prolong bloom production. • Weeds rob plants of valuable water, nutrients--remove them. • Great sun/heat-lovers include coral honeysuckle, coreopsis, lantana, oleanders and hamelia. • Fertilize flowers lightly, if at all; too hot for heavy feedings. • Water your lawn longer but less frequent. Deep water of about 2 - 3” per week forces plant roots to grow down, instead of sideways into sunbaked upper soil levels. Use a bowl in your yard to measure during waterings.

All Shows at Studio 101, 1824 Spring Street #101, Houston TX 77007 Mildred’s Umbrella Theatre Company has been selected for an NEA Art Works grant from the National Endowment for the Arts for our upcoming production of the Houston Premiere of The Drowning Girls by Beth Graham, Charlie Tomlinson, Daniela Vlaskalic. In addition, the company has received a Brown Foundation Discretionary Fund Grant for operations in our upcoming season. These grants are highly competitive and we are proud to have been among the recipients. The Drowning Girls, a modern interpretation and poetic retelling of the “Brides in the Bath” slayings in 20th century England. The work also examines the lengthy history of misogyny and domestic abuse in modern civilization. Originally produced in Canada for the Edmonton Fringe Festival, the work will debut in Houston on July 16, 2015 and will run for 12 performances through August 1, 2015. In line with MU’s mission to promote and support the work of women, the play, written by three female playwrights, illustrates how far women have come in the fight for equality in the past 100 years.

DECIBELLES (A BARBERSHOP CHORUS)
We are a (ladies only) daytime chorus rehearsing every Friday morning from 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM, at the Treemont Retirement Center, 2501 Westerland, near Westheimer and Gessner. We prepare two types of shows each year; a Christmas show with old favorites, but always a new fun tune including props, narratives and choreography. Our regular show this year is titled “Through the Years” We are singing songs from 1900 and every decade after that. If your meeting, gathering or any type “get together” would like a half hour of cheerful and melodic entertainment, call the Decibelles. We’ll be there in costume with a program of sheer delight. Come visit any Friday we are not performing. We would love to see you and if you decide to join us, we would be delighted. For more information, please call Pat at 281-497-4904 or visit our website, www.Decibelles.org.

SIRE, HOUSTON’S THERAPEUTIC EQUESTRIAN CENTERS
The only time our clients say they feel free is when they’re riding a horse in a brisk walk around the arena or driving a carriage through the wooded pastures or feel the nudge of a horse’s muzzle at their shoulder saying, “I’m glad to see you, my friend.” Nothing else can compare with therapy on horseback. Equine-assisted activities improve physical balance and coordination, mental acuity, emotional stability and social interactions. At SIRE, we see miracles on horseback happen every day. The work of our dedicated volunteers helps guarantee that children and adults with disabilities in the Greater Houston Area will have the programs they need to live longer, healthier, more productive lives. In addition to their weekly work in the arena, many of our volunteers donate their time and talents at fund-raising events such as our annual Ride-A-Thon and the yearly Trailblazers Luncheon. Volunteers are on hand during the NARHA on-site certification and annual SIRE Show-Off and volunteers are vital to our Clients’ successes at the Top Hands Horse Show, during the Houston Rodeo and competition at the regional and state Special Olympics. Therapeutic horseback riding creates a bond of success between the rider and their horse. Volunteers are their own personal cheering section and the instructor is their mentor and coach. Clients become more empowered and better equipped to fully live their lives, each day.

BE A MENTOR AND GIVE A CHILD THE POWER OF A SECOND CHANCE
CROSSROADS mentors are regular people, just like you, who help prevent or reduce youth involvement with the juvenile justice system by fostering supportive mentoring relationships. These young people range from the ages of 10-17. The goal is to reduce juvenile crime and turn these young lives around to develop a positive attitude for positive results. Our mentors must be 21 years of age, willing to commit to one hour a week for one year and submit to fingerprinting and a background check. There are many zip codes available in and around the Katy area with suitable times of the week for mentors to meet with their assigned youth. We are in need of loving and caring mentors for young people that feel as though they are alone in this world. Please consider devoting a minimum of one hour a week that could possibly change a child’s life forever. Many times you are their only hope. Contact Denise Kennedy at CrossroadsVolunteer@hcjpd.hctx.net or 713-295-2779. For more information on our mentorship program, visit our website at www.crossroads-volunteers.org.

Now they’ll have to figure out how to organize themselves and make their money last a whole month. Fortunately, Child protective Services offers them a program to help prepare for independence: Preparation for Adult Living (PAL). The year-long course culminates in an all-day workshop hosted by the National Council for Jewish Women (NCJW). The course is held at Junior Achievement’s BizTown, using computer kiosks sponsored by local businesses. Want to help with PAL or other NCJW programs that help change lives with hands-on community service? Contact info@ncjwhouston.org or see www.ncjwhouston.org.
