For more info., contact Elizabeth Walker, 832-437-0446 or Julie’s Davies, 281-782-5858 or check out our website, www.cincoranchladiesclub.org.

NEW RESOURCE FOR PET OWNERS IN CINCO RANCH
Lose a pet? Find a pet? See a pet running around a neighborhood? Please share it with the Cinco Ranch Area Lost and Found Pet Network: www.facebook.com/groups/CRLostPets. We are a group run by Cinco Ranch residents for Cinco Ranch residents to help lost pets find their way home through networking with like-minded rescue groups and other HOA pages. Cinco Ranch Lost and Found Pet Network is a resource with many documents available located within our group files to help those who have both lost and found pets, as well as lists of related, pet service providers. For instance, did you know animal control in Fort Bend County is all the way down in Rosenberg, but if you live in the Harris County portion of Cinco and your dog is picked up, it is taken all the way up by I-45 and Canino Road - near Little York Road? (The worst scenario is if a dog that lives in one county ends up being picked up in the other county.) Also, if your pet is brought to one of these locations, you likely will only have three days to find it before it is released for adoption OR euthanized. If you wait to see if your animal returns home on its own, it might be too late! Please use this new group as needed and share our page with Facebook friends! We are looking for volunteers to help administer this group and also people that would be willing to foster animals found in Cinco until their owners are found, rather than the animals being brought to a shelter. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact cincoranchlostpets@yahoo.com.

GARDENING TIPS FOR APRIL
Mulch - If possible, buy Bagged Mulch. Bagging helps eliminate a great many pests that die from various causes while in the bag. When you buy ‘loose’ mulch that is trucked to your home, you are also buying ants, roaches, termites, etc… Spend a little more on bagged material and save lots of future pest problems. Keep your mulch at least 4” - 6” below the top of your homes exposed foundation edge/side. This will aid in minimizing pests in your home and allow for quick and accurate termite inspections. Shrubs, Flowers and groundcovers - Trim all shrubs/plants at least 12” - 18” back from your home. Do your best to create a plant free zone that is 18” - 24” wide around your home. The exception is your lawn - it can grow up next to the slab as long as you keep it 4” - 6” below the top of the slab. The most conducive to termite infestation are groundcover plantings, growing high against your homes exterior or (especially) ivy that grows on your walls. Trees - Spray your trees at least twice annually. The spring spray eliminates overwintering pests and fungi while preparing trees to resist the pest onslaught of summer with residual pesticides. The fall spray also kills pests from the summer, prevents most fungi from occurring over the winter and puts your valuable asset off to a healthy winter’s dormancy. Lawn - Spring is the perfect time to do a fungicide treatment to stop brown patch in its tracks along with other fungi. If your lawn is thin and weak in some areas, here are some important fundamentals: a) lawn aeration b) fertilization c) weed control.

Most important is proper watering: • Water once per week (unless you get a 1/2” rain or more - then do not water.) • Water heavily (1” - 2”) for total lawn coverage. • In severe drought, water every 5th day. • Water from 5 AM to 7 AM in the morning - NOT AT NIGHT. • A heavy deep weekly watering makes the turf grow deeper, stronger and more drought resistant roots. • Less watering also saves you money!! CC Building by Design, LLC POPE JOHN XXIII HIGH SCHOOL NEWS
Pope John XXIII High School in Katy headed to the state championship meet February 14th, in San Antonio. 10 of the girls and 6 of the boys on the 20-person team qualified for the state meet and competed in many different events, including all of the possible relays. The girls team was especially excited to head to the state meet and defend their state title; Pope John’s girls team were two-time defending champions in search of a “three-peat.” Students who went to the state championships include: freshmen Isaiah Hamlyn, David Lloyd and Ben Rehfeld; sophomores Grace Duhon, Shelby Langdon, Jennifer Lines and Jon Schulz; junior Delia Weber and seniors Emily Doyle, Carter Garrelts, Kendall Henry, Ryan Hermes, Ashley Kopf, Cameron McHugh, Elizabeth Roach and Samantha Schulz.
Pope John XXIII High School announced that senior Jack Parmenter has been named a National Merit Finalist in the 2014 National Merit Scholarship Competition. About 1.5 million juniors in more than 22,000 high schools entered the 2014 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2012 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/ NMSQT®), which served as an initial screen of program entrants. The nationwide pool of Semifinalists, representing less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors, includes the highest-scoring entrants in each state. The number of Semifinalists in a state is proportional to the state’s percentage of the national total of graduating seniors. To become a Finalist, the Semifinalist and their high school must submit a detailed scholarship application, in which they provide information about the Semifinalist’s academic record, participation in school and community activities, demonstrated leadership abilities, employment and honors and awards received. A Semifinalist must have an outstanding academic record through-out high school, be endorsed and recommended by a high school official, write an essay and earn SAT scores that confirm the student’s earlier performance on the qualifying test. Jack is now eligible to compete for one of the 8,000 National Merit Scholarships offered next spring, worth about $35 million in total.

MESSAGE FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT BUILDING TOMORROW TOGETHER
Have you driven recently across the Grand Parkway extension and noticed the number of new residential and commercial construction projects emerging just north of I-10? Just less than a decade ago this was vast open land, rice farms and cattle. Soon, there will be bustling streets and housing complexes, like we have seen in other parts of Katy. and strong economy. This is an exciting time for Katy ISD as we experience such exponential growth. More families and businesses are moving here because they, like you, believe in the value of our community and schools. But in order to continue to thrive, it is imperative that we build tomorrow together to adequately serve the educational needs of our students, today and in years to come. Through data presented annually by our District demographers, PASA and discussions with residential developers, we’ve been able to identify future enrollment projections and where we will see many new neighborhoods within the next couple of years. This will inevitably bring many of our campuses to full capacity and create a pressing need to provide additional classroom space throughout Katy ISD. Our staff presented to the Board a presentation on a proposal for developing a facilities review and bond process to help us begin to meet the growing demands and inevitable outcomes of our schools’ reputation and strong economy. These steps are instrumental to ensure that the quality educational opportunities our students receive today continue to keep pace with our growth. The Board will now take some time to process the proposal presented to them. Rest assured, I will keep you updated and hope you will support our efforts as we move forward with our growth plans throughout the year. Let’s build tomorrow together! Sincerely, Alton Frailey, Superintendent Katy Independent School District

OTHS FIRST YEAR TEACHER OF THE YEAR
Tompkins High School in Katy, Texas, is proud to congratulate our First Year Teacher of the Year, Amber Warren, an American Sign Language teacher. Ms. Warren went to Lamar University, double majoring in ASL and Mathematics and graduating Cum Laude. She also works part-time as an interpreter for Sorenson VRS. She is an excellent teacher who is student focused and enthusiastic, initiating a love of ASL in her freshmen and sophomore students, even setting up deaf socials so that they may practice their skills with members of the surrounding community. WEST I-10 VOL. FIRE DEPT
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED The West I-10 Volunteer Fire Department (VFD) is seeking applicants who are willing to become a member of the organization and want to provide this critical service back to your community. You will find, as a member, you cannot belong to a more important, life changing organization than one that is designed as a first responder to care for citizens and neighbors during a critical time in their lives. ESD #48 and ESD #1 provide first responder service through the West I-10 VFD to an estimated evening population of 125,000 residents. This does not include those who work or travel through the area throughout the day. You, as a resident who lives, works or recreates in the Katy area, should be quite aware that the district is growing at a rapid pace. We are looking for men and women like you to help keep pace with this communities growing needs. In 2013, the West I-10 Volunteer Fire Department responded to over 6,000 calls for assistance. This includes medical, fire and motor vehicle incidents. In addition, West I-10 will provide mutual aid to other departments in the region, including Willowfork, Westlake, Katy, Fulshear and Cy-Fair Fire Departments. The Department relies extensively on the presence of volunteer firefighters to assist in scheduled staffing of fire stations. In addition, you may be requested to respond to the fire station from your home when a significant event occurs.

BE A MENTOR AND GIVE A CHILD THE POWER OF A SECOND CHANCE
CROSSROADS mentors are regular people, just like you, who help prevent or reduce youth involvement with the juvenile justice system by fostering supportive mentoring relationships. These young people range from the ages of 10-17. The goal is to reduce juvenile crime and turn these young lives around to develop a positive attitude for positive results. Our mentors must be 21 years of age, willing to commit to one hour a week for one year and submit to fingerprinting and a background check. There are many zip codes available in and around the Katy area with suitable times of the week for mentors to meet with their assigned youth. We are in need of loving and caring mentors for young people that feel as though they are alone in this world. Please consider devoting a minimum of one hour a week that could possibly change a child’s life forever. Many times you are their only hope. Contact Denise Kennedy at CrossroadsVolunteer@hcjpd.hctx.net or 713-295-2779. For more information on our mentorship program, visit our website at www.crossroads-volunteers.org.

SIRE, HOUSTON’S THERAPEUTIC EQUESTRIAN CENTERS
The only time our clients say they feel free is when they’re riding a horse in a brisk walk around the arena or driving a carriage through the wooded pastures or feel the nudge of a horse’s muzzle at their shoulder saying, “I’m glad to see you, my friend.” Nothing else can compare with therapy on horseback. Equine-assisted activities improve physical balance and coordination, mental acuity, emotional stability and social interactions. At SIRE, we see miracles on horseback happen every day. The work of our dedicated volunteers helps guarantee that children and adults with disabilities in the Greater Houston Area will have the programs they need to live longer, healthier, more productive lives.
