Winterizing Your Home: Preparing Your Home for Winter

(Source: About.com) Here are ten tips to help you prepare your home for winter: 1) Heating System Inspection • Call an HVAC professional to inspect your furnace. • Stock up on air filters and change them monthly. • Consider switching out your thermostat for a programmable thermostat. • Remove all flammable material from the area surrounding your furnace.

2) Get the Fireplace Ready • Cap or screen the top of the chimney to keep out rodents and birds. • If the chimney hasn’t been cleaned for a while, call a chimney sweep to remove soot and creosote. • Buy firewood or chop wood. Store it in a dry place away from the exterior of your home. • Inspect the fireplace damper for proper opening and closing. • Check the mortar between bricks and tuck-point, if necessary. 3) Check the Exterior, Doors and Windows • Inspect exterior for crevice cracks and exposed entry points around pipes; seal them. • Use weather-stripping around doors to prevent cold air from entering the home and caulk windows. • Replace cracked glass in windows and, if you end up replacing the entire window, prime and paint exposed wood. 4) Inspect Roof, Gutters & Downspouts • If your weather temperature will fall below 32 degrees in the winter, adding extra insulation to the attic will prevent warm air from creeping to your roof and causing ice dams. • Check flashing to ensure water cannot enter the home. • Replace worn roof shingles or tiles. • Clean out the gutters and use a hose to spray water down the downspouts to clear away debris. • Consider installing leaf guards on the gutters or extensions on the downspouts to direct water away from the home. 5) Service Weather-Specific Equipment • Drain gas from lawnmowers. • Replace worn rakes. • Clean, dry and store summer gardening equipment. • Sharpen ice choppers and buy bags of ice-melt / sand.

6) Check Foundations • Rake away all debris and edible vegetation from the foundation. • Seal up entry points to keep small animals from crawling under the house. • Tuckpoint or seal foundation cracks. Mice can slip through space as thin as a dime. • Inspect sill plates for dry rot or pest infestation. • Secure crawlspace entrances. 7) Install Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors • Some cities require a smoke detector in every room. • Buy extra smoke detector batteries and change them when daylight savings ends. • Install a carbon monoxide detector near your furnace and / or water heater. • Test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors to make sure they work. • Buy a fire extinguisher or replace an extinguisher older than 10 years. 8) Prevent Plumbing Freezes • Locate your water main in the event you need to shut it off in an emergency. • Drain all garden hoses. • Insulate exposed plumbing pipes. • Drain air conditioner pipes and, if your AC has a water shut-off valve, turn it off. • If you go on vacation, leave the heat on, set to at least 55 degrees. 9) Prepare Landscaping & Outdoor Surfaces • Trim trees if branches hang too close to the house or electrical wires. • Ask a gardener when your trees should be pruned to prevent winter injury. • Plant spring flower bulbs and lift bulbs that cannot winter over such as dahlias in areas where the ground freezes. • Seal driveways, brick patios and wood decks. • Move sensitive potted plants indoors or to a sheltered area. 10) Prepare an Emergency Kit • Buy indoor candles and matches / lighter for use during a power shortage. • Find the phone numbers for your utility companies and tape them near your phone or inside the phone book. • Buy a battery back-up to protect your computer and sensitive electronic equipment. • Store extra bottled water and non-perishable food supplies (including pet food, if you have a pet), blankets and a first-aid kit in a dry and easy-toaccess location. • Prepare an evacuation plan in the event of an emergency.

Parking in the Street

Did you know it is against Cinco Ranch Covenants for residents to park in the street (Article XII, Section 2(a))? Additionally, when a number of vehicles park in the street, emergency vehicles have a difficult task maneuvering down the street. Due to the size and clearance needs of these emergency vehicles, a street lined with parked cars obstructs the passage and delays response time. While it is understood that during certain events, vehicles parking on the street is an unavoidable circumstance, please be aware of clearance needed for traffic. Ask your guests to park their car as close to curb as possible and not line both sides of the street. Be a courteous neighbor by communicating you are having a gathering at your home and may need additional parking. Ask if they would mind guests parking in front of their homes to help eliminate the congestion on the street. Remember, parking on the street for residents is prohibited and can impact the ability of emergency services to reach you or a neighbor in an emergency. Your cooperation will ensure Cinco Ranch retains its reputation as the premiere area to live in.

With the Katy ISD bus changes this year, many parents are dropping off and picking up their children at school. This means there are many more cars parked along the streets near the schools. Please be extra cautious in these areas and be alert to the parked cars and the children walking to and from the cars. Thank you.

Tennis Reservation Cancelations

If you make tennis reservations and decide that you cannot play, please go online and cancel your reservations. This will ensure that the courts will be open for other residents to then reserve the courts. Thank you.

Help Keep Our Lights On

Cinco Ranch Residents pay a maintenance fee where a large portion includes the electricity to light our streets. Each streetlight costs the Cinco Ranch Associations approximately $30 dollars a month. This fee is billed to us whether the light is working or not. If you see a light(s) burned out, please help us by getting the number on the pole. You may submit the work order to Centerpoint Energy or report it to the Associations Office. To report the outage yourself you will either fill out the form available at: www.centerpointenergy.com/outage or you can call the information into Centerpoint Energy at 713-207-2222. The electronic form is much faster as you won’t be put on “hold.” You can also report dim lights, leaning poles, etc. on the electronic form. Copy the email to the Cinco Ranch Residential Office at: CincoRanchCustomerCare@pcmi-us.com so we can keep the list of lights reported.

PET LEASH LAWS IN THE CINCO RANCH AREA Harris County - LEASH LAW

Animals that are not properly restrained pose a threat to all our residents. While you may know your pet is friendly, an animal running at someone who is walking by is very scary for that person. Many children are afraid of animals and become frightened, which could result in the child getting hurt trying to avoid the animal. Harris County Animal Control advises, “All dogs and cats must be kept under restraint while in the unincorporated areas of Harris County, Texas. The custodian of a dog or cat is not authorized to have, harbor or keep any unlicensed dog or cat or to allow any dog or cat to become a stray.”

Cinco has 9 pools available during the swim season. Starting in April, the Greenway Village pool will open. This pool stays open through the end of October. Cinco Southwest has two pools - The Lake House Pool and the Rosewood Pool. All of these pools are available for use by both Cinco and Cinco Southwest Residents.

Restraint is defined as “the control of a dog or cat under the following circumstances: 1. When it is controlled by a line or leash not more than six (6) feet in length, if the line or leash is held by a human being, who is capable of controlling or governing the dog or cat in question. 2. When it is within a fully enclosed vehicle. 3. When it is on the premise of the custodian and the animal does not have access to sidewalk or street.

The shared use agreement was signed in October of 2009 through the end of 2013. At that time, the shared use agreement will be reviewed.

While it may be nice to have your animal out in the yard while you work or play, it is against the law, unless the animal is properly restrained.

281-617-2231 Let’s all help keep our community a safe and comfortable place for all our residents by being responsible pet owners. This will not only protect anyone who may be walking or bicycling in the area, but also the pet owner who could be held legally responsible or possibly sued for failing to properly restrain their pet. To make a complaint or report an animal that is not properly restrained please contact: Harris County Precinct #5, Contract #87: 281-463-6666 Harris County Animal Control: 281-999-3191 Harris County Health Department, Rabies/Animal Control Section 2223 West Loop South, Houston, Texas 77027-3588 www.countypets.com

Ft. Bend County - LEASH LAW

Laws written to ensure that owned animals are confined to their property or kept on a leash make freeing a community of unrestrained and free-roaming animals easier. Although most dog bites occur on the property where the dog lives, unrestrained or free-roaming dogs do pose a substantial threat to the public. In addition, unrestrained animals are at increased risk of being bitten by rabies-infected wildlife. Enforcement of restraint laws is essential in enhancing the animal control program efforts to reduce the risk of rabies in our community. LICENSING OF DOGS AND CATS The primary benefit of licensing animals is identification, should that animal become lost. Licensing also: • Ensures that rabies vaccination are current • Allows for quick identification in case of a bite incident • Provides revenue to offset the administration costs of the animal control program

4

VACCINATION Rabies vaccinations are a prerequisite for licensing dogs and cats because they are an important control measure for the public health threat of rabies. In addition to protecting pets, rabies vaccinations provide a barrier between infected wild animals and humans. To make a complaint or report an animal that is not properly restrained please contact: Fort Bend County Animal Control - 1210 Blume Road - Rosenberg, TX 77471 - 281-342-1512 - AnimalServices@co.fort-bend.tx.us

Help Avoid Power Outages In Your Neighborhood

Do you have a transformer in your yard? If you do, please do not directly surround it with mulch or dirt. Transformers must have the sides exposed so they can cool properly. Otherwise they will over heat and burn out. Also, the sides of a transformer can rust through due to mulch holding moisture against them. Please do your part and clear the area around transformers in your yard.

Who Do I Call?

• Street Light Outages - Report to CenterPoint Energy via their website, thereby eliminating a lot of “hold time” on the phone. The website address is: www.centerpointenergy.com/outage. Give them as much information as possible, including the address and/or pole number. If you prefer to call, the number is 713-207-2222. • Street sign or stop sign down or missing - Please contact the county. The Harris County phone number is 281-463-6300 and Fort Bend County phone number is 281-341-9562. Let them know you are calling regarding a sign and they will transfer you to the proper person. They will need to know the street name and location. If you are in a custom area, please contact the Association office at 281-599-0408.

DO NOT FEED THE DUCKS!

Recently, signs have been added to the area surrounding the lake at Lake Pointe advising residents not to feed the ducks at the park and lake. The duck population at Lake Pointe is a concern and feeding the ducks is encouraging the ducks to loiter. The ducks are a part of nature and the lake is a natural area, but feeding the ducks in this manner causes a duck population growth and subsequently the mess that goes along with it. Please keep this in mind the next time you are enjoying the park and lake. Thank you for your consideration and attention. - Management

Sheriff’s Vacation Home Watch

Vacation Can Be Great! Make sure you return home and feel great. If you are going on vacation, a business trip or just going away for the weekend, please put your house on a vacation watch list. It only takes a few minutes to inform local police that you are away from home. Take measures to secure your home and cars. Let your neighbors know that you will be away and when you plan to return. Inform neighbors and law enforcement if you plan on having maintenance services stop by while you are on vacation. It is advised that you have newspapers stopped, mail held and any advertisement left on your property picked up by someone. Keeping lawn mowed for a normal appearance to the property will look as if there is active occupancy. Taking preventative steps may deter vandals or thieves from entering your home. Log into the site or call the office to give appropriate information. Make sure to cancel the watch when you return home. Fort Bend County Residents: www.co.fort-bend.tx.us/vacationForm.asp Harris County Residents: Call 713-221-6000 and give home information. Going out of town? Contact your sheriff’s department to have them watch your home.

Postal Box Maintenance

To report Postal Boxes that are in disrepair or in need of replacement, please file a report with the Katy Post Office for your Zip Code area (77450 - 281647-0673; 77494 - 281-574-1401) or visit their website at www.usps.com/ contactus

PROTECT STORM DRAINS

Just one quart of motor oil can ruin the quality of 250,000 gallons of water. Decomposing leaves and grass clippings can cause large amounts of algae to grow which depletes the oxygen level in the water and can lead to fish kills. The blowing, sweeping or dumping of grass clippings and other pollutants down the storm drain is against Texas State Law punishable by a fine of $5,000 for each offense. PLEASE CALL 281-398-8211 TO REPORT OFFENDERS.

Our special interest groups are going strong this year: Book Club, Wine Social Club, Creative Kitchens, Professional Networking and Expat Club, to name a few. If you’re new to Cinco Ranch, please come to our monthly meeting. Membership forms will be available (yearly dues - $25), as well as information on all the CRLC has to offer! For more info., contact Pam Donnelly (281-725-0364) or Lorie Phillips (580-716-5066).

Do You Have This Phone Number in Your Cell Phone?

Two phone numbers suggested you save in your cell phone are the nonemergency Harris County Precinct 5 Constables and Fort Bend County Sheriff’s numbers. 911 should always be used in case of an emergency, but many times we need to contact the Sheriff’s department and need to do so quickly. Don’t hesitate to call the Sheriff’s department if something in your neighborhood seems questionable. This will give our contract deputies probable cause to investigate. This would include suspicious vehicles (vehicles exhibiting unsafe or erratic driving behavior), suspicious persons or behavior, activity at you neighbors home when you know they are on vacation and anything else that may be out of the ordinary in your neighborhood. Don’t take a chance on you or your family’s safety. Harris County Precinct 5 Constables Fort Bend County Sheriff

GARDENING TIPS FOR JANUARY

• Birds: Provide food and fresh water. More birds die from lack of water than from lack of food. • Cacti: Semi-dormant now. Reduce watering. • Camellias: Plants may be moved. Pick up and discard fallen blooms. • Cultivation: Changes in design may now be made, new beds dug and old ones rebuilt. Correct defects in drainage. Incorporate gypsum into heavy

soils: repeat in three weeks. Dig granite dust, rock phosphate and quantities of organic matter into soil. Allow time for settling before planting. • Fertilize: Daylilies, spuria, Louisiana and bearded irises with complete fertilizer. Give strawberries 1 teaspoon ammonium sulfate, keeping six inches away from plant. Fertilize pansies with manure tea or blood meal. Water in. • Fruits: Plant fruit trees. Mulch figs with grass or straw to prevent freeze damage to crown. • House Plants: Water, when surface soil is crumbly dry. Wash dust off leaves to open pores. Mist often. Inspect for diseases and insects. Reduce water for poinsettias. • Lawns: Remove thatch aerate, and feed with low nitrogen mixture. • Pests: For petal blight prevention, spray azaleas and camellias as flowers open. Spray for scale with dormant oil solution if temperature will be above 35˚ and below 85˚ for next 48 hours. Always read and heed manufacturer s directions before spraying. • Propagation: Ivy cuttings root easily this month and next. Root cuttings of shrubs in mixture of loam and coarse sand; keep damp and semi-shaded until rooted. • Prune: Fruit trees in advance of new growth. Prune to groom and shape. Do not remove too much. Remove dead wood from trees and shrubs before spring buds swell, but do not prune spring bloomers. Prune crape myrtles. Prune nandina and others of similar growth habit by cutting unwanted canes out at base of plant. • Roses: Annual pruning about the middle of February, just before the spring buds break. To prevent later appearance of disease in the old beds, keep garden clean of debris and weeds. Complete preparation of new beds for roses. • Transplanting: January is one of the best months to transplant woody plants, both evergreen and deciduous, especially trees. Energy will be expended on roots instead of foliage. Learn ultimate size and cultural needs of tree or plant before buying. Consider dwarf varieties to avoid crowding later. Group plants of similar cultural needs. Do not work wet soil. Assure good drainage. Keep plants moist. • Vegetables: Prepare beds, preferably raised for drainage, with about 50% humus, including rotted manure. • Winter Protection: Expect freeze any time; plan for protection of tender plants. Water. Remove coverings, particularly plastic, when temperature rises. Protect low plants with dry leaves, pine needles or soil mulch, but remove when weather warms.

of Katy ISD’s 15th annual Promise to Read program. Through Promise to Read, volunteers promised to spend 30 minutes reading to an elementary classroom during one week in November. This year, ten Katy ISD elementary campuses hosted the event with Partners in Education: Morton Ranch, Hutsell, Nottingham, Kilpatrick, King, Pattison, Mayde Creek, Griffin, Bear Creek and McRoberts Elementary. Host campuses rotate each year so that, over a three-year period, every Katy ISD elementary has an opportunity to participate. “Promise to Read has become a volunteer event that many in our community really look forward to. Most of our visiting readers return year after year,” says Sandi Meier, Katy ISD Promise to Read and Classroom Champions Coordinator. “Having a guest reader in the classroom is a fun treat for students, but it also promotes the life-long joy of reading.” Readers represented a cross section of local companies and organizations including: Amegy Bank, American Kids Athletics, AXA Financial Advisors, Brazos Valley Schools Credit Union, CenterPoint Energy, Chick-Fil-A of Katy,

Sixth graders at Beckendorff Jr. High presented their PBL projects to PTA officers in November. PBL stands for Project Based Learning and is an instructional approach built on learning activities that engage student interest and motivation. These activities are designed to answer a question or solve a problem and generally reflect the types of learning and work people do in the everyday world outside the classroom. The 6th graders’ project this fall was to plan their grade level party and had to make decisions including the theme, staying within the budget and implementation of the event.

KATY ISD’s SEVEN LAKES HIGH SCHOOL ADVANCES TO STATE MARCHING CONTEST IN SAN ANTONIO!

The Seven Lakes High School Band represented Katy ISD at the UIL Texas State Marching Contest in San Antonio, Texas, on Tuesday, November 6th. They competed against other marching bands from across the state for top honors. This is quite an achievement and a testament to the hard work and dedication of the directors, band and color guard members. After earning a Division 1 rating in the Region 23 UIL Marching Contest earlier this month, Katy ISD’s Seven Lakes High School advanced to the Area Marching Contest held on Saturday, October 27th. A total of 22 bands competed in the Area Contest, with 10 advancing to Finals and only 4 advancing to compete at the State Marching Contest. The Seven Lakes High School band was among the top 4 bands and advanced to State! Only 4 times since the 1980’s has a school from Katy advanced to the State Marching Contest and only 2 times in 5A classification. The last time a school advanced to the State Marching level was Seven Lakes High School in 2007, as a 4A school. The State Marching Contest took place at the Alamodome in San Antonio on Tuesday, November 6th. The 5A competition comprised of 38 bands from across the State. These are considered the “best of the best” and competition is steep. 5A Bands began their preliminary performances at 7:30 AM on Tuesday, with the final band performing at 6:15 PM. The Seven Lakes High School Spartan Band performed their “In the Loop” Competition Show at 10:30 AM.

SERVING ALL OF GREATER HOUSTON

The Spartan Band competed with both band and color guard members and comprises approximately 320 members. Directors include: Damon Archer Directors of Bands; David Reynolds - Associate Director of Bands; Jonathan Yoo - Assistant Director of Bands; and Angie Fritsch - Guard Director. Drum Majors include: Grace Chung - Head Drum Major; Alaina Roth; Molly Todd and Mark Milhelin. Rachel Luergering is the band’s Student Teacher. Excitement and support surrounded the Seven Lakes Spartan Band! The school even arranged a “Fan Bus” for students to travel to San Antonio to support the band at their performance! Parents, family, friends, as well as former students could be seen in the Alamodome with “In the Loop” Competition Show t-shirts or orange band shirts. Seven Lakes Principal Ted Vierling, Assistant Principal James Morris, as well as Superintendent Alton Frailey, Assitant Superintendent Joe Kelley, Chief Academic Officer Dr. Christine Caskey and Bob Bryant Executive Director of Fine Arts were also in attendance. The Seven Lakes fan base was said to be the loudest in the stadium, cheering for the band as they entered the field for their performance. The UIL State Marching competition for 5A takes place every other year (even years). The competition is evaluated by 5 different judges and all bands are given a composite score. Based on these results, the top 10 out of 38 bands advance to Finals, which take place later in the evening. Unfortunately, the Spartan Band did not advance to Finals, however just making it to this level is quite an accomplishment and something to be very proud of. Marcus High School from Flower Mound placed first in this year’s Contest. They also placed first in 2010. 8 out of the top 10 bands in this year’s Finals were also among the top 10 bands in the 2010 State Marching Contest Finals. The Seven Lakes Spartan Band and other bands within the Katy Independent School District are fortunate to have the support of a district that understands the value and importance of Fine Arts to their student’s education and overall success in school. The Seven Lakes High School Spartan Band would like to thank Katy ISD for their support at this recent trip to compete at the UIL Texas State Marching Contest. The band is also very fortunate to have supportive corporate sponsors which include Conoco-Philips, Wal-Mart Transportation, Baytown Shopping Center, M&H Enterprises, Soteica Visual Mesa, Drs. Hamon & Debuyl, DDS, Infinity Roofing, Kingsland Dental Group, Randall’s, Trendmaker Homes, Trailer World of Katy, KTK, Inc. and Forrest Orthodontics. Visit www.slhsband. org for more information.

New Latter-day Saint Congregation in Katy

Growth in the Katy area has led to the need for a new congregation in the Katy Stake of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. A congregation, called a ward, is a geographic area with about 300-600 church members. When an area sees growth, such that local wards are reaching the upper size limits, a new ward is formed. That is what happened this October in Katy, with the creation of the new Katy Mills Ward.

20

Portions of the existing Katy 1st Ward, Katy 3rd and Katy 4th, make up the new ward. Katy Mills Ward now serves 350 church members south of I-10, between Woods Road on the west and Mason Road on the east, with the south boundary approximately at FM 1463. The Katy Mills Ward is one of eleven congregations that make up the Katy Stake. The Church presence in Katy began with one member in around 1950 and has steadily grown since then and now includes several thousand Latter-day Saints. The bishop or lay leader of the Katy Mills Ward is Cody Larsen, who works as a finance manager at Phillips 66 and Company. Bishop Larsen will be assisted in leading the congregation with two counselors: Robert Lund and Dave Bleazard. They began immediately setting up leadership for various auxiliary organizations, for youth, children and adults. The new Katy Mills Ward meets at the LDS meetinghouse at 1928 Drexel Road in Katy, sharing that building with two other wards. Their Sunday meetings start at 11:00 AM. Visitors are always welcome. Times and locations for all wards can be found at Mormon.org; click on “visit us,” enter an address and the appropriate location and meeting schedule will be supplied. Alternatively, clicking on the map to locate a nearby meeting is also an option on the webpage.

HOUSTON, we have a problem! Adults who are too busy, too tired, too whatever to be bothered TEACHING and MODELING respect and integrity to their students, decide it is better to just offer them the morning after pill at SCHOOL, without consent of parents! Be realistic, they are ALL going to “do it anyway!”

The cost is $5 per child (or buy a 5-session card for $20) and the child must be accompanied by an adult during the program. Please park in the Memorial Drive United Methodist Church west parking lot at 12955 Memorial Drive and enter the sanctuary through the marked gate. The program will be held in the outdoor classroom. Call 713-464-4900 or go to www.houstonaudubon.org for more information.

It is time to WAKE-UP. We need to remind ourselves and those we place our children in the care of, that PARENT’S MATTER and that going behind our backs is not, nor will EVER BE in the best interest of our girls.

SIRE, Houston’s Therapeutic Equestrian Centers

The only time our clients say they feel free is when they’re riding a horse in a brisk walk around the arena or driving a carriage through the wooded pastures or feel the nudge of a horse’s muzzle at their shoulder saying, “I’m glad to see you, my friend.” Nothing else can compare with therapy on horseback. Equine-assisted activities improve physical balance and coordination, mental acuity, emotional stability and social interactions. At SIRE, we see miracles on horseback happen every day. The work of our dedicated volunteers helps guarantee that children and adults with disabilities in the Greater Houston Area will have the programs they need to live longer, healthier, more productive lives. In addition to their weekly work in the arena, many of our volunteers donate their time and talents at fund-raising events such as our annual Ride-A-Thon and the yearly Trailblazers Luncheon. Volunteers are on hand during the NARHA on-site certification and annual SIRE Show-Off and volunteers are vital to our Clients’ successes at the Top Hands Horse Show, during the Houston Rodeo and competition at the regional and state Special Olympics. Therapeutic horseback riding creates a bond of success between the rider and their horse. Volunteers are their own personal cheering section and the instructor is their mentor and coach. Clients become more empowered and better equipped to fully live their lives, each day. To volunteer, please call one of our arenas and ask to speak with a volunteer coordinator. The single greatest need, for homeless and street kids is our continuous caring and real support. We must convince them that we care, we want them back and we want to help them get off the streets.

PTSD SUPPORT GROUP DOES THIS SOUND LIKE YOU OR SOMEONE YOU KNOW?

I feel like the horrific event is happening all over again. I have nightmares and flashbacks of the event. I stay away from crowded places that remind me of the event. I jump and feel very anxious when something happens without warning. I have a hard time trusting or feeling close to other people. I get mad very easily. I feel guilty because others have died and I lived. I have trouble sleeping and my muscles are tense. There are many characteristics that may be signs of Post-Traumatic Stress (PTSD). If you recognize some or all of these symptoms; you may want to seek help. YOU ARE NOT ALONE! Group meeting at Memorial Drive UMC, 13194 Memorial Drive. Call 713-468-8356 x119 for fates and times.
