MUZIK2HEAL
The Brookwood Community citizens were all smiles on November 16, 2013 after attending an uplifting concert presented by the non-profit group Muzik2Heal. The contributing young musicians were John and Lucy Cao, Aidan Gettemy, Claire Kyoung, Ethan and Kevin Le and Spencer Taylor. They performed classical works such as “The Swan” by Saint-Saens, “Winter Wind” by Chopin and contemporary pieces such as “It Ain’t Necessarily So” by Gershwin and “A Whole New World” by Menken. It was a healing experience for both the audience and the performers.
KEEP HEALTHY THIS NEW YEAR WITH THE BEST WINTER SUPPLEMENTS
Cold weather months are notorious for colds, flus, bouts of low energy, and extra fatigue. Fight off germs and malaise with the best winter supplements. Natural supplements can boost the immune system and prepare the body for winter. Try these cold weather remedies to stay healthy and alleviate unpleasant symptoms. BOOST THE IMMUNE SYSTEM A weak immune system leaves the body vulnerable to all the bugs that people share along with presents and holiday cheer. Vitamin A is crucial for a strong immune system

It’s your dream. northwest.hccs.edu hccnorthwest and aids in tissue repair. It is also important for good eyesight. Men may benefit from 700 micrograms daily and women may take 600 micrograms. Selenium is an essential mineral and antioxidant that boosts the immune system and may help protect against cancer. It is a common ingredient in multivitamins. Take 200 micrograms daily. Vitamin C is a well-known friend to the immune system. Taking vitamin C helps the immune system fight off colds, but it also may help people who are currently ill get better faster. Echinacea is perhaps the most famous supplement for battling bugs. This supplement comes from a native North American plant. It has antibiotic and anti-viral properties. Some herbalists call echinacea a blood purifier. It may contribute to more white blood cells that help to fight infections. Not everyone likes the taste of echinacea. Those who do can take lozenges and teas, but others can try tinctures and tablets, or take elderberry extract as an alternative. Elderberry is a traditional remedy for colds and flus. DETOXIFY THE BODY Herbs help to rid the body of toxins, which improves overall health and helps the body to function optimally, especially the liver. Dandelion is a good liver tonic. Try it in tea or in a tincture. Alcohol and holiday festivities go hand in hand, which results in damage to the cells of the liver. An ingredient in milk thistle called silymarin aids in repairing liver cells and could stimulate new cell growth. Fight bloating and ingestion from all the extra winter eating with cynara artichoke, which stimulates bile production. The supplement may also aid growth of good bacteria in the intestines. FIGHT FATIGUE WITH THESE WINTER SUPPLEMENTS Wintertime makes people naturally want to slow down, relax and eat comfort food. The cold weather and cloudy days make some people tired. Those not as severely affected by weather may also find themselves fatigued during the holidays or cold weather months thanks to added stress from traveling, planning and hosting relatives. Winter supplements can fight off fatigue. Some people may benefit from a burst of iron. The body needs iron to make red blood cells, which transport

oxygen to everywhere in the body. Without adequate oxygen, the body feels run down and eventually can become anemic. Increasing iron intake may improve energy and intellectual performance. Iron is available in pills and liquid supplements. Women may benefit from 15 milligrams of iron daily. Men can take nine milligrams and kids could use two to nine milligrams, depending upon their age. Another good winter supplement to battle low energy is Co-enzyme Q10. This supplement helps the body use more oxygen and thus fights fatigue and lethargy. The small effort required to take supplements can result in a big payoff. Fewer sick days, more energy and a well-functioning body means happier holidays. People taking medication or other natural supplements may wish to consult a naturopathic doctor or other medical expert about the best winter supplements for them. FIVE TIPS TO SOOTHE AND RELIEVE DRY SKIN DURING COLD MONTHS
Cold weather, low humidity levels and wind are factors that can really dry out and damage your skin, especially when central heaters are used at home. How can one alleviate dryness and help skin stay moist and healthy through the coldest months of the year? MOISTURIZE MORE! Find an “ointment” moisturizer that is oil-based, rather than water-based. The oil will create a protective layer on the skin that retains more moisture than a cream or lotion. When choosing a moisturizer, it is best to opt for natural organic skincare products or nourish skin with pure oils, such as almond, avocado, coconut or jojoba oil. You can also look for lotions containing humectants, a class of substances that attract moisture to your skin, such as glycerine. Always read the ingredient label; preservatives and fragrances can dry and irritate sensitive skin. Preservatives that seem to cause problems for many people include propylene glycol, quaternium-15 and imidazolidinyl urea.

21949 Katy Freeway, Suite D • Katy, Texas 77450 In addition, stop using deodorant bars, antibacterial soaps, perfumed soaps and skin care products containing alcohol, like hand sanitizers. They can strip oils from the skin. PROTECT YOUR SKIN WHEN GOING OUTSIDE It is important to protect your skin even on a cloudy or snowy day. Snow is an even better reflector than water! Use a natural sunscreen and lip balm (lips don’t have oil glands, and they can dry out easily, causing chapped lips) and wear a scarf and gloves to help prevent chapped lips and hands. AVOID SUPERHOT SHOWERS OR BATHS Hot water removes the skin’s natural oils more quickly than warm or cold water. This is why showers should be limited to five minutes, using warm water rather than hot. A lukewarm bath with oatmeal or baking soda can help relieve skin that is so dry that it has become itchy. After washing, moisturizing skin immediately with oil helps trap water in the skin. DRINK MORE WATER OR HERBAL TEA TO PREVENT DEHYDRATION The skin is often the outer reflection of the inner being. To keep the body hydrated, drinking water is paramount. Alcohol, caffeine and all kinds of diuretics should be avoided. Drinking herbal tea and eating fluid-rich foods, such as fruit, vegetables and soup, can also help.
Also, one study by the Johnson & Johnson Skin Research Center found a link between low vitamin D levels and drier skin. Individuals with lower levels of vitamin D had lower average skin moisture. The skin consists of a special layer designed to convert ultraviolet B radiation from the sun into vitamin D; a lack of sun in the winter can have a substantial impact on the dryness of your skin. Few foods contain significant amounts of vitamin D naturally. The best sources are wild-caught salmon and mackerel. Indeed, it may be worth supplementing your diet with vitamin D in the winter. DON’T OVERHEAT YOUR HOME AND OFFICE Central heating systems and space heaters draw moisture out of the air and out of your skin. It is recommended to keep indoor temperature below 72° F. Using a humidifier is a good option, especially in the bedroom, to keep skin well hydrated while sleeping. These skincare tips should help with dry skin. However, some cases of dry skin should be seen by a doctor, especially if symptoms get worse. There are internal factors that can cause dry skin, including overall health, genetics and medical conditions like asthma, allergies, dermatitis, eczema or psoriasis. Written by: Josephine Beck Source: www.naturalnews.com
EAT FOODS RICH IN OMEGA-3S AND VITAMIN D Essential fatty acids (omega-3s and omega-6s) are most important. These healthy fats help retain natural oils in your cells and keep skin well hydrated. Omega-3 can be found in cold-water fish as well as in poly-unsatured and unrefined vegetable oils such as flax oil. Because of unsafe levels of mercury and toxicity in some kinds of fish (especially the big ones such as salmon), it is advisable to supplement diet with good vegetable oils or seeds instead (like chia or hemp seeds).

GARDENING TIPS FOR JANUARY
• Birds: Provide food and fresh water. More birds die from lack of water than from lack of food. • Cacti: Semi-dormant now. Reduce watering. • Camellias: Plants may be moved. Pick up and discard fallen blooms. • Cultivation: Changes in design may now be made, new beds dug and old ones rebuilt. Correct defects in drainage. Incorporate gypsum into heavy soils: repeat in three weeks. Dig granite dust, rock phosphate and quantities of organic matter into soil. Allow time for settling before planting. • Fertilize: Daylilies, spuria, Louisiana and bearded irises with complete fertilizer. Give strawberries 1 teaspoon ammonium sulfate, keeping six inches away from plant. Fertilize pansies with manure tea or blood meal. Water in. • Fruits: Plant fruit trees. Mulch figs with grass or straw to prevent freeze damage to crown. • House Plants: Water, when surface soil is crumbly dry. Wash dust off leaves to open pores. Mist often. Inspect for diseases and insects. Reduce water for poinsettias. • Lawns: Remove thatch aerate, and feed with low nitrogen mixture. • Pests: For petal blight prevention, spray azaleas and camellias as flowers open. Spray for scale with dormant oil solution if temperature will be above 35˚ and below 85˚ for next 48 hours. Always read and heed manufacturer s directions before spraying. • Propagation: Ivy cuttings root easily this month and next. Root cuttings of shrubs in mixture of loam and coarse sand; keep damp and semi-shaded until rooted. • Prune: Fruit trees in advance of new growth. Prune to groom and shape. Do not remove too much. Remove dead wood from trees and shrubs before spring buds swell, but do not prune spring bloomers. Prune crape myrtles. Prune nandina and others of similar growth habit by cutting unwanted canes out at base of plant. • Roses: Annual pruning about the middle of February, just before the spring buds break. To prevent later appearance of disease in the old beds, keep garden clean of debris and weeds. Complete preparation of new beds for roses. • Transplanting: January is one of the best months to transplant woody plants, both evergreen and deciduous, especially trees. Energy will be expended on roots instead of foliage. Learn ultimate size and cultural needs of tree or plant before buying. Consider dwarf varieties to avoid crowding later. Group plants of similar cultural needs. Do not work wet soil. Assure good drainage. Keep plants moist.

• Vegetables: Prepare beds, preferably raised for drainage, with about 50% humus, including rotted manure. • Winter Protection: Expect freeze any time; plan for protection of tender plants. Water. Remove coverings, particularly plastic, when temperature rises. Protect low plants with dry leaves, pine needles or soil mulch, but remove when weather warms.

BP AMERICA, INC. LEADS KATY ISD EDUCATION FOUNDATION INVESTORS
The Katy ISD Education Foundation is pleased to announce that BP America has joined the organization as a Cornerstone Investor by contributing $50,000 for STEM-related teacher grants. The BP STEM Grant Program will be administered via the foundation’s Inspiring Imagination teacher grant initiative. STEM is the acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics and represents the integration of science and mathematics into existing areas of study. “As a Katy ISD Education Foundation Cornerstone Investor, BP stands at the forefront of an initiative from which generations of Katy ISD students will benefit,” said Chris Crockett, Katy ISD Education Foundation Board President. “BP’s contribution will provide Katy ISD teachers with countless opportunities to bring extraordinary classroom experiences to their students.” BP, which has a long standing relationship with Katy ISD through the Cinco Ranch High School FIRST Robotics Program, Junior Achievement and other programs, is eager to deepen their support through the BP STEM Grant Program. “BP is thrilled to support an innovative program that will provide Katy ISD teachers additional resources they need to continue inspiring their students,” said Mike Zanghi, BP Vice President for Wells, Gulf of Mexico. “This donation reaffirms BP’s commitment to STEM education and to the communities in which we live and operate.” The Katy ISD Education Foundation launched its second annual Inspiring Imagination teacher grant cycle Dec. 1st. All Katy ISD educators directly involved in classroom instruction will be invited to apply. Last year, in its inaugural grant cycle, the foundation awarded more than $88,000 to 117 Katy ISD teachers for inspiring, innovative classroom projects to be implemented this school year. To learn more, contact us at 281-396-6031 or visit www.katyisdeducationfoundation.org. Chris Simank, VP-Fundraising, states “I am amazed at the amount of support that has been poured out to our organization from the community. We are fortunate to live where we do among such wonderful people.” “This event would not have been possible without the army of volunteers who graciously donated their time for such an awe-inspiring event. It brings the school to the community. Friends, family and neighbors lined the sidewalks in anticipation of the approaching band,” said Buddy Verneuil, VPCommunications. Thanks again to the Seven Lakes community and its supporters.

The Seven Lakes High School Band Boosters wishes to express its gratitude to the community for supporting the SLHS Band’s 3rd Annual March-a-Thon, which was held on Saturday, Sept. 7, 2013. Scouts CHRISTIN VOGEL EARNS GIRL SCOUT GOLD AWARD
Girl Scout Ambassador Christin Vogel recently earned the Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest award a girl scout can achieve. Less than five percent of girls who join Girl Scouts earn this recognition. Thousands of squirrels and swamp rabbits are injured yearly due to natural causes such as storms and diseases, as well as animal attacks and human interaction. Christin’s project addressed the issue of providing shelter for squirrels and swamp rabbits while they recover from injuries. Christin and her volunteers built squirrel boxes and swamp rabbit boxes to donate to the Texas Wildlife Rehabilitation Center. The Texas Wildlife Rehabilitation Center rehabilitates wounded animals with the intent to release

back into the wild. The shelters that were built will be placed in their natural habitats and the squirrels and swamp rabbits will use these temporary shelters until they are once again fully adapted to the wild and can live efficiently on their own. Christin also conducted educational workshops at local libraries and informed people about how the Texas Wildlife Rehabilitation Center takes in harmed animals and helps them recover strength, confidence and their natural habits. She also described signs of an injured animal and discussed what to do if an animal does become injured and how to avoid harming wild animals. Christin demonstrated outstanding leadership skills, community involvement, time management and personal development in order to carry out her Gold Award project. As an active member of Girl Scouts for 9 years, Christin has also earned her Bronze and Silver Awards. Christin is currently a Junior at Cinco Ranch High School.

BOY SCOUT TROOP 557 EAGLES
Boy Scout Troop 557 of the Texas Skies District is proud to announce the 7 latest scouts to achieve their Eagle. This is the highest achievement in Boy Scouting: Aaron Murray, a graduate of Pope John XXIII High School Ashton Rocker, a graduate of Morton Ranch High School Colby Leal, a graduate of Cinco Ranch High School Cory Christoffersen, a senior at Katy High School Tony Steinbrecher, a graduate of Seven Lakes High School John Liner, a graduate of Cinco Ranch High School Aiden Burke, a senior at Morton Ranch High School These scouts have been working hard to complete the necessary requirements to achieve this goal. Many have been in scouting since 1st grade. They have learned life lessons through the badges they have earned over the years. The scouts have been in various leadership roles from historian to Senior Patrol Leader. Several of the scouts have attended the National Youth Leadership Training to assist them in their leadership roles. In addition to the various merit badges and countless service hours, the scouts had to choose their own project to manage that would benefit the community. Aaron’s project was to build a workbench for permanent display at the Katy Heritage Society. Ashton’s project was to put in a flagpole for the American Flag at Aristioli Classic Academy in Katy. Colby’s project was to build classroom book/storage shelves for Cinco Ranch High School German Department. Cory’s project was to build storage/travel boxes for tympani set for Katy High School Band. Tony’s project was to build donation boxes that collected funds for the needy for Epiphany’s Outreach Ministry. John’s project was to collect new and gently used children’s books for Texas Children’s Hospital. Aiden’s

BE A MENTOR AND GIVE A CHILD THE POWER OF A SECOND CHANCE
CROSSROADS mentors are regular people, just like you, who help prevent or reduce youth involvement with the juvenile justice system by fostering supportive mentoring relationships. These young people range from the ages of 10-17. The goal is to reduce juvenile crime and turn these young lives around to develop a positive attitude for positive results. Our mentors must be 21 years of age, willing to commit to one hour a week for one year and submit to fingerprinting and a background check. There are many zip codes available in and around the Katy area with suitable times of the week for mentors to meet with their assigned youth. We are in need of loving and caring mentors for young people that feel as though they are alone in this world. Please consider devoting a minimum of one hour a week that could possibly change a child’s life forever. Many times you are their only hope. Contact Denise Kennedy at CrossroadsVolunteer@hcjpd.hctx.net or 713295-2779. For more information on our mentorship program, visit our website at www.crossroads-volunteers.org.

SIRE, HOUSTON’S THERAPEUTIC EQUESTRIAN CENTERS
The only time our clients say they feel free is when they’re riding a horse in a brisk walk around the arena or driving a carriage through the wooded pastures or feel the nudge of a horse’s muzzle at their shoulder saying, “I’m glad to see you, my friend.” Nothing else can compare with therapy on horseback. Equine-assisted activities improve physical balance and coordination, mental acuity, emotional stability and social interactions. At SIRE, we see miracles on horseback happen every day. The work of our dedicated volunteers helps guarantee that children and adults with disabilities in the Greater Houston Area will have the programs they need to live longer, healthier, more productive lives. In addition to their weekly work in the arena, many of our volunteers donate their time and talents at fund-raising events such as our annual Ride-A-Thon and the yearly Trailblazers Luncheon. Volunteers are on hand during the NARHA on-site certification and annual SIRE Show-Off and volunteers are vital to our Clients’ successes at the Top Hands Horse Show, during the Houston Rodeo and competition at the regional and state Special Olympics. Therapeutic horseback riding creates a bond of success between the rider and their horse. Volunteers are their own personal cheering section and the instructor is their mentor and coach. Clients become more empowered and better equipped to fully live their lives, each day. To volunteer, please call one of our arenas and ask to speak with a volunteer coordinator. How would you feel if you saved a kid’s life? StandUp For Kids is an all volunteer organization dedicated to saving the lives of at-risk and homeless kids through volunteer outreach efforts. Every day throughout the US thirteen kids die on the streets from abuse, disease and suicide. According to recent statistics Houston has up to 2,500 kids living on the streets at any given time. Texas has the highest rate of homeless youth in the U.S. StandUp For Kids needs supplies for our Houston program, which provides food, clothing, counseling and a safe environment for the homeless youth of Houston. If you or your organization would like to hold a food or clothing drive for StandUp For Kids, please contact me at HeatherE@standupforkids.org to learn more about StandUp For Kids or how you can help, visit our website at www.standupforkids.org. The single greatest need, for homeless and street kids is our continuous caring and real support. We must convince them that we care, we want them back and we want to help them get off the streets.

When foster children reach age 18, they are considered independent. That’s difficult for kids who have been wards of the state, with necessities arranged by caseworkers with state funds. Now they’ll have to figure out how to organize themselves and make their money last a whole month. Fortunately, Child protective Services offers them a program to help prepare for independence: Preparation for Adult Living (PAL). The year-long course culminates in an all-day workshop hosted by the National Council for Jewish Women (NCJW). The course is held at Junior Achievement’s BizTown, using computer kiosks sponsored by local businesses. Want to help with PAL or other NCJW programs that help change lives with hands-on community service? Contact info@ncjwhouston.org or see www.ncjwhouston.org.

RUOK PROGRAM
Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Dept. has a computer-generated program called “Are You OK?” (RUOK). It is a computer-generated call intended for senior citizens (over 55) and disabled persons who live alone and could benefit from a daily check. A computer will generate a call each morning, at about the same time and the participant chooses a time frame. A voice will ask, “Are you OK?” After this, all they have to do is hang up the phone. If the participant goes out of town or leaves the residence for any time, you just temporarily un-subscribe and re-subscribe when you return. If the call goes unanswered, the computer will call back 3 times at 15-minute intervals. If there is still no answer, the sheriff will dispatch a deputy or the local police. They will have with them a print out of information on the person that is not responding to the calls. This program was established by FBC Sheriff Milton Wright, Commissioner’s Court and Ken Whitt (FBC Sheriff’s Citizens Academy Alumni Assoc.) in 1998. Many police chiefs in the county are also participating in the program and will proceed with the welfare check for citizens of their community. To request more information or to enroll in this free and very beneficial program, please call the Sheriff’s dept. at 281-3414704.
