grass health. Even in severe drought, twice per week watering promotes deeper grass roots. Residents should set lawnmowers on a high setting, which would allow the grass to absorb more moisture and naturally destroy the weeds. The soil in Cinco MUD 8 has a high CLAY content so the ground absorbs water at a slower rate. Set your irrigation timer to water for FIVE to EIGHT minutes per zone and repeat one hour later. This is known as “Cycle and contractor will reset your controller for the right amount of time based on sun/shade/soil type and the type of sprinkler heads on each zone. This will allow the ground to absorb the water and avoid water runoff (wasted water). Another money saving technique is to shorten the watering time by ONE minute and if the grass is still green, money is saved. The addition of a RAIN will save water and money.
We all appreciate seeing a clean appearance to Cinco Ranch, especially down at the curbs. With the combination of age and weather, our streets and 2011 drought, we need to look down to make sure our curbs look as good as the day we moved into our home. In our monthly newsletter, The Cinco Spirit, there is a standing section titled “Who Do I Call.” Within that section there is a broken curb phone number. The number for Fort Bend County is 800-690-7623 and for Harris County the number is 281-463-8703. Take note that the Association maintains the gated communities, but the Counties maintain the curbs on the streets and cul de sac areas. There is a website for Fort Bend County that you report these matters as well: . Remember, the curbs do a lot more for our appearance than just move water down the street. Take 10 minutes to note the intersection or home location that might need a curb repair, then call the County to have this put on the list appeal.”

Although most dog bites occur on the property where the dog lives, unrestrained or free-roaming dogs do pose a substantial threat to the public. In addition, unrestrained animals are at increased risk of being bitten by rabies-infected wildlife. Enforcement of restraint laws is essential in enhancing the animal control program efforts to reduce the risk of rabies in our community. LICENSING OF DOGS AND CATS

DO NOT FEED THE DUCKS!
Recently, signs have been added to the area surrounding the lake at Lake Pointe advising residents not to feed the ducks at the park and lake. The duck population at Lake Pointe is a concern and feeding the ducks is encouraging the ducks to loiter. The ducks are a part of nature and the lake is a natural area, but feeding the ducks in this manner causes a duck population growth and subsequently the mess that goes along with it. Please keep this in mind the next time you are enjoying the park and lake.

CROSSROADS mentors are regular people, just like you, who prevent or reduce youth involvement with the juvenile justice system by fostering positive mentoring relationships. The goal is crime prevention! Our mentors must be 21 years of age and volunteer a minimum of 1 hour a week. There are many sites, areas and available times of the week for mentors to meet with their assigned child. We desperately need loving and caring mentors for boys and girls that do not have anyone visiting them! Please consider devoting just one hour a week to the future of a needy child, many times you are their only visitors. Contact Jan Sadler Gibbs at jan.gibbs@hcjpd.hctx.net or 713-295-2779.

The only time our clients say they feel free is when they’re riding a horse in a brisk walk around the arena or driving a carriage through the wooded pastures or feel the nudge of a horse’s muzzle at their shoulder saying, “I’m glad to see you, my friend.” Nothing else can compare with therapy on horseback. Equine-assisted activities improve physical balance and coordination, mental acuity, emotional stability and social interactions. At SIRE, we see miracles on horseback happen every day. The work of our dedicated volunteers helps guarantee that children and adults with disabilities in the Greater Houston Area will have the programs they need to live longer, healthier, more productive lives. In addition to their weekly work in the arena, many of our volunteers donate their time and talents at fund-raising events such as our annual Ride-A-Thon and the yearly Trailblazers Luncheon. Volunteers are on hand during the vital to our Clients’ successes at the Top Hands Horse Show, during the Houston Rodeo and competition at the regional and state Special Olympics. Therapeutic horseback riding creates a bond of success between the rider and their horse. Volunteers are their own personal cheering section and the instructor is their mentor and coach. Clients become more empowered and better equipped to fully live their lives, each day. To volunteer, please call one of our arenas and ask to speak with a volunteer coordinator. Our goal, the rainbow that we chase, is to leave no legitimate request for assistance unanswered. Do you have the time and desire to volunteer to help a great cause?
