Vacation Can Be Great! Make sure you return home and feel great.
If you are going on vacation, a business trip or just going away for the weekend, please put your house on a vacation watch list. It only takes a few minutes to inform local police that you are away from home. Take measures to secure your home and cars. Let your neighbors know that you will be away and when you plan to return. Inform neighbors and law enforcement if you plan on having maintenance services stop by while you are on vacation. It is advised that you have newspapers stopped, mail held and any advertisement left on your property picked up by someone. Keeping lawn mowed for a normal appearance to the property will look as if there is active occupancy. Taking preventative steps may deter vandals or thieves from entering your home.

This would include suspicious vehicles (vehicles exhibiting unsafe or erratic driving behavior), suspicious persons or behavior, activity at you neighbors home when you know they are on vacation and anything else that may be out of the ordinary in your neighborhood. The students were introduced to the concept of plate tectonics and how they are the underlying cause of the 3 major forces that change the face of the Earth (earthquakes, tsunamis and volcanoes). They also learned how these forces both destroy and create the earth. The best part was watching their volcanoes erupt lots of oozing “lava.” Pictured are: Christian McCool, Kyle Wagner, Ajay Tandon, Grant Hightower, Zachary Webb and Sarah Grindal.

Beckendorff’s Mathcounts team won 4th place at the state level competition in Austin. Over 70 schools participated and the top 10 were given awards. Proudly, Beckendorff is the 4th best junior high school in math in Texas. The students were 8th graders Keerthana Chakka (captian), Andrew Liu, Kevin Cheng, Akhilesh Yeleswarpu, Pranay Tamminayana and 7th grader Kevin Yang. This was the highest achievement in our history; please join in congratulating the students.
The Project Outreach challenge required them to make a difference in their community. They chose to help raise awareness about a local dog shelter called STAAR. They designed their project, created an advertisement and marketing brochure and shared their project at the tournament with an entertaining live presentation. StandUp For Kids is an all volunteer organization dedicated to saving the lives of at-risk and homeless kids through volunteer outreach efforts. Our volunteers search the streets in their lives. Every day throughout the US thirteen kids die on the streets from abuse, disease and suicide. According to recent statistics Houston has up to 2,500 kids living on the streets at any given time. Texas has the highest rate of homeless youth in the U.S. StandUp For Kids needs supplies for our Houston program, which provides food, clothing, counseling and a safe environment for the homeless youth of Houston. If you or your organization would like to hold a food or clothing drive for StandUp For Kids, please contact me at HeatherE@standupforkids.org to learn more about StandUp For Kids or how you can help, visit our website at www.standupforkids.org. The single greatest need, for homeless and street kids is our continuous caring and real support. We must convince them that we care, we want them back and we want to help them get off the streets.

AN ART VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY AT HOUSTON APHASIA REcOVERY cENTER Stephanie Schmadeke, Director of the Houston Aphasia Recovery Center is looking for volunteers to teach painting or drawing lessons to their clients. Their location is 6260 Westpark (in the West Loop/SW Freeway area). This would be perfect for someone who has time and a calling to help people or for students who are looking for community service and teaching experience. Even if you are new to art, you would have something to offer. Just give them what you know. That will be more than enough. (Paint mixing, pallets, brush choices, hand positions, perspective, shading, blending, etc.) All would be a great help to someone recovering from Aphasia.

This is a group to support working moms in the Katy area who would like network. Play dates will be held on Saturdays and an occasional mom’s night on a weeknight. I’m hoping that there are other moms out there just like myself who would like to have like-minded moms to hang out with on the weekend and fun things to plan with the kids during non-work hours. If you’re interested, please join my group and take a minute and tell me a little about yourself so we can get to know one another and start building a group together. Did you know there is a support group for the Gifted and Talented Program in KISD? The Katy Parents of Gifted and Talented is an advocacy organization dedicated to promoting quality educational services for the gifted students in the school district. The mission of the organization is to promote community awareness of the unique social, emotional and intellectual needs of gifted and talented students and to support the development of appropriate educational services to meet these needs. To function successfully as an advocacy organization, KPGT needs membership and volunteer support! Funded by membership dues, KPGT publishes a quarterly newsletter, “Connections” and is now on the web! KPGT advocates for the needs of our GT students by serving on district committees, panels at state GT conferences, the Parent Advisory Board and keeping abreast of legislative issues. KPGT works cooperatively with KISD to co-host events such as the very popular “Super Saturday” and the “Student Summer Scholarship Seminar.”

Our kids deserve the best, after all, that’s why we chose to put them in Katy Katy’s Own School Lunch Revolution.

Hosting a foreign excHange student is easier tHan you may tHink During the 2012-2013 school year, students from all across the world will have the opportunity to travel to Houston and surrounding communities to spend the entire school year in the United States, learning and working with American Families. In order for the students to come to the U.S. they must have proper host families lined up. Now is a crucial time of year for the upcoming school year. The Ayusa program is celebrating its 30th year this year and is responsible for more than 60,000 students from 75 different countries spending the school year in the United States. With the current school year quickly coming to an end Ayusa’s local staff is busy looking for families for students for the 2012-2013 school year. Many families are needed and with the schools having deadlines and limits for foreign exchange students, the earlier the better. It also gives the families and students time to get to know each other via skype, facebook, etc. while waiting for their year abroad to start. For more information and requirements, please contact Heather Wells by phone 281-770-3414 or by email ayusakaty@gmail.com.

natUraL MosQUito rePeLLant
Mosquitoes have complex methods of detecting hosts and different types of mosquitoes react to different stimuli. Most mosquitoes are active at dawn and dusk, but there are also mosquitoes that seek hosts during the day. You can avoid being bitten by making sure you aren’t attracting mosquitoes, using attractants to lure mosquitoes elsewhere, using a repellent and avoiding actions that diminish the effectiveness of the repellent. Use this list of items and activities that attract mosquitoes as a list of things to avoid or that can be used as bait to lure mosquitoes away from you.

The exact temperature depends on the type of mosquito. Many mosquitoes are attracted to the slightly cooler temperatures of the extremities. Mosquitoes are attracted by perspiration because of the chemicals it contains and also because it increases the humidity around your body. Even small amounts of water (e.g., moist plants or mud puddles) will draw mosquitoes. Standing water also allows mosquitoes to reproduce. These natural products will effectively repel mosquitoes, but they require more frequent reapplication (at least every 2 hours) and higher concentrations than DEET. Because of the differences between types of mosquitoes, products that contain multiple repellents tend to be more effective than those containing a single ingredient. As you can see, natural repellents tend to be volatile plant oils.

FATHER’S DAY JUNE 17TH
The third Sunday in June is Dad’s time in the sun. And contrary to what some cynics contend, this holiday was not the invention of a greeting card company - commercial greeting cards as we know them didn’t even exist when Sonora Smart Dodd thought up Father’s Day in 1909. Father’s Day was the brainchild of Sonora Smart Dodd, whose mother had died giving birth to her. At a time when many widowed men sent their offspring to live farm in eastern Washington. In 1909, grown and married, Sonora was in church listening to a Mother’s Day sermon when the thought struck her that fathers deserved credit too, especially hers. Through her efforts, Spokane,

FATHER’S DAY GIFT IDEAS – PICKED BY DADS the cost side, the choice to raise a family often means scaling back many of time with the next generation. It also means giving up the freedom to be big these life changes are all we want, but there’s a reason why men make family line is certainly one reason. More importantly though, dads have the urge to bestow the lessons they’ve learned through time on their children early. They want their children to exceed them, to be even more successful than they were.

Landscaping Services The notion that a man enjoys mastering his domain by slaving away in the hot sun to cut grass, trim hedges and plant becomes less true as guys get older. However, frugal dads who never like to ask for help may not be too keen on admitting they’d rather have someone else step in. Give your dad the gift of a prepaid landscaping service and it will save his ego as well as his back. Sports Tickets It sounds sappy, but often-great experiences and the memories they create are the only gifts that matter. Meat Most men associate the chance to dine on high-quality meat as a luxury only provided by restaurants. There are some excellent mail-order meat establishments such as Omaha Steaks or Prime Chops that can deliver the same level of quality for your dad to use in his own special recipes to make grilling at home that much more of an experience. Driving Gloves Did your dad sell the family car for his own two-door roadster once you left the house for good? If so, then a pair of leather driving gloves will certainly add to his driving experience. Wine Good wine is a luxury most men only learn to appreciate and have the means to acquire later in life. So remind your father of the perks of being an experienced dad by supplementing his collection. If a wine shop’s massive selection intimidates you, start with something full-bodied from California, Pinot Noirs from the Russian River Valley and Chardonnays from Sonoma are sure bets.
Byron Bruess’
Leather wallet A man rarely thinks about the quality or image his wallet projects. After all, it’s tucked out of sight most of the time. Feeling, smelling and looking at the quality of a nice leather wallet, will quickly make your dad realize just how shoddy his faithful standby is and show him it’s time to retire it.
Tree Services
A set of golf clubs If your father considers a round of golf as the closest thing he’s found to heaven on earth, then enhancing his equipment to improve his game is an obvious Father’s Day gift idea. Wow him with a new set of irons and he’ll think of you every time he hits a great shot.
281-578-TREE(8733)
Fishing gear about a rod, a reel and some line. Once he opens a new rod and reel or even of this age-old pastime expand to include his new toys. Alcohol Sometimes nothing can take the edge off of a day of stress and work like a nice stiff drink. Buy your dad top-shelf booze like a bottle of Johnny Walker Blue Label, or more affordable Bombay Sapphire and you’ll give him a gift he can enjoy and appreciate with you on Father’s Day. Grilling tools everything. Your dad may not realize just how many useful tools exist now to help make the grilling experience that much better, so providing him with a great set will both educate and impress him. www.askmen.com

DachshunD Rescue of houston - We are a small group of volunteers right here in Houston and the surrounding areas and we love dachshunds! Our primary mission is to rescue (from pounds and shelters) purebred (and a few mixed) dachshunds that end up alone, abandoned and/or abused and for many of them, it can be an 11th hour rescue. All of our rescued dachsies receive a complete health evaluation by our accredited veterinary clinics and are either spayed or neutered (if not already), given immunizations, dental care and are started on any necessary medical treatment(s).
Richard's Plumbing Solutions $20 Off First Visit
Our focus following rescue, is rehabilitation and relocation into a safe and loving foster home. These dachshunds are all in need of a second chance at life and simple basics like human affection, which they may have been without their entire little lives. And for that reason… We’re in desperate need of Foster Parents! As a foster parent, you’ll have the opportunity to help so many dogs. You’ll provide them a place to stay and be loved until they are healthy and strong enough to be adopted. Fostering is very rewarding, and the puppy kisses you’ll receive are priceless!
