Santa’s Visit

Santa will ride through the neighborhood again this year with candy for the children. Watch and listen for the fire truck on Saturday, December 15th, beginning at 11:30 AM. It is important that small children are with a responsible adult or older child. Do not allow children to run into the street to collect the candy. Be aware of the traffic at all times.

Christmas Decoration Judging Selections for outstanding decorations will be made on Saturday, December 15th after dark. Please have your lights on so they can be shared by your neighbors, as well as the judges. In order to distribute the honor, homes that were selected in the past three years will not be eligible this year.

Holiday Security

Christmas Tree Tips

During the holidays, there is an unfortunate increase in home and vehicle burglaries. There are a few things you can do to deter thieves.

Permission to reprint granted by the National Safety Council, a membership organization dedicated to protecting life and promoting health.

When shopping for those gifts, secure them in the trunk of your car or out of sight. Visible shopping bags are an invitation to thieves. Be aware of people around you and if you feel someone is following you or watching you, do not get in the car. Many shopping malls offer security officer that will escort you to your car. Take advantage of that service. It’s no secret that piles of unchecked holiday mail and newspapers can tip off burglars to an empty house and lead to holiday break-ins. If you’re traveling throughout the holidays, it’s a good idea to ask a neighbor to help keep up your home’s appearances so it doesn’t have that vacant look about it. Even a small favor such as asking your neighbor to occasionally park their car in your driveway can improve your home security. Use timers to turn lights on and off in the living areas of your home to give the appearance that someone is there. You can also take advantage of Harris County Precinct 5 Constable’s vacation watch. Officers will be aware that you are away and will be watchful for suspicious activities around your home.

For many people, decorating the Christmas tree is a favorite part of the holiday. The National Safety Council offers some safety tips to make sure a mishap doesn’t spoil your holiday season. Christmas Trees A real tree can add to the spirit of Christmas by filling your home with beauty and the scent of pine. But a real tree can also pose a fire hazard. Each year, more than 400 residential fires involve Christmas trees and tragically nearly 40 deaths and 100 injuries result from those fires. Try to select a fresh tree by looking for one that is green. The needles of pines and spruces should bend and not break and should be hard to pull off the branches. On fir species, a needle pulled from a fresh tree will snap when bent, much like a fresh carrot. Also, look for a trunk sticky with sap.

Happy Holidays

If you use an artificial tree, choose one that tested and labeled as fire resistant. Artificial trees with built-in electrical systems should have the Underwriters Laboratory (UL) label. Tree lights Only use indoor lights indoors (and outdoor lights only outdoors). Look for the UL label. Check lights for broken or cracked sockets, frayed or bare wires, or loose connections. Replace or repair any damaged light sets. Also, use no more than three light sets on any one extension cord. Extension cords should be placed against the wall to avoid tripping hazards, but do not run cords under rugs. Turn off all lights on trees and decorations when you go to bed or leave the house.

7

Tree ornaments • Always use the proper step stool or ladder to reach high places. • Read labels before you use materials that come in jars, cans and spray cans. • Never place lighted candles on a tree or near any flammable materials. • Avoid placing breakable tree ornaments or ones with small, detachable parts on lower branches where small children or pets can reach them. • Do not hang popcorn chains and candy canes on the tree when small children are present. They may think that other tree ornaments are also edible.

One of our traditional fireworks holidays is approaching. Please be considerate of your neighbors while enjoying the tradition of fireworks on New Year’s Eve. Don’t use people, cars or structures as targets for bottle rockets and roman candles. It would be tragic to cause injury or damage on this exciting holiday. • Fireworks cannot be used in the neighborhood parks. • Do not direct any fireworks at anything or anyone. • Do not shoot fireworks off before 9 AM or after 10 PM on any day, (except New Year’s Eve: try to finish by 1 AM). • Avoid shooting fireworks that shoot up or fly through the air. • If a car comes down the street, get out of its way and do not light any fireworks while it is passing. • Don’t make the “fireworks holiday” turn into a month of fireworks. • Frightened pets must be taken inside while the fireworks are in use. Protect your pets at all times. • MOST IMPORTANT: Clean up the mess! Sweep the streets and drives (and, don’t forget to pick up the items that accidentally went into your neighbor’s yard). If you have a problem with someone that is shooting off the fireworks, please call the Constable’s office and ask for an officer to come by. Celebrate responsibly and have a designated driver if adult beverages are consumed!

Vacations occur year round and the Precinct 5 Constables offer a very valuable service. If you complete a Vacation Watch form they will drive by and check your home while you are away. This form is available on the Precinct 5 Constable’s website, www.co.harris.tx.us/ pct5 on the Concord Bridge website, www.concordbridgeonline.com and in this publication. You can also ask for a copy from one of the officers. Information on how to mail or fax it is on the form. It’s also a good idea to let a trusted neighbor know that you will be gone so they can report unusual activity at your home during your absence.

A NON-WORKING STREET LIGHT?

If you encounter a streetlight that is not working, you can report it by phone or on the internet. Please have as much information as possible, the location of the light, approximate address or closest intersection, and if possible, the number on the pole. The only way for a light to be repaired is for us to report it. You can report it by phone at 713-207-2222 or at www.centerpointenergy.com/outage.

TRASH PICK UP

Please remember that our trash pick up days are Monday and Thursday. Heavy trash day is Thursday and the trash company is required to pick up heavy items approved on their retrieval list. Stay Slim & Trim for the Holidays! Temptation galore awaits us each holiday season. How can you stay slim and trim and avoid gaining weight this Thanksgiving and Christmas? Check out these tips: • Understand the temptations. There are more candies, cookies, cakes and creamy foods over the holidays because when a full stomach means a warm body. Reach for fresh fruits and vegetables. • Have a healthy breakfast. Cakes are so tasty with morning coffee and tea. Why not eat whole wheat bread with SmartBalance butter or even a whole wheat waffle with freshly sliced banana? • Up your fiber intake. Eat plenty of whole grains, nuts, oatmeal and green leafy veggies. Your body may be lacking fiber and as a result, you reach for those tempting foods. • Stay hydrated. Many times we’re actually thirsty instead of hungry. Aim for at least 64 ounces of water, not juices, each day. • EXERCISE, EXERCISE, EXERCISE. Yes, it is cold outside. Yes, you’re unmotivated. NO, don’t stay home. Get out of that house and IN to a gym.

BABYSITTING LIST NOT AVAILABLE ONLINE GARDENING TIPS FOR DECEMBER • If a long flowering period is desired, pansies should be placed in their permanent beds not later than this month. Fertilize monthly with manure, super-phosphate or a liquid high-phosphate product. Keep flowers picked for more bloom. • Take tulips out of cold storage and plant late this month. • Fertilize established trees, spring-blooming shrubs, spurias and sweet peas (after they are a foot tall) with a fertilizer such as 1313-13; Louisiana iris with cotton seed meal and manure. • Azaleas and camellias may be moved now. Keep moist to lesson cold weather damage. May acidify again. • Last month to plant early blossoming spring bulbs, speciosum and other varieties of lilies. Mulch. • Water plants well before a freeze; dry roots are easily damaged. • Don’t forget to provide food and fresh water for birds. More birds die from lack of water than lack of food.

CYPRESS FALLS HIGH SCHOOL CHOIR

‘Tis the season for rejoicing in shining fashion! Our choir family had a wonderful opportunity to shine with its A Cappella choir on October 30th. Several choirs in the state of Texas were in attendance at Sam Houston State University in their Performing Arts Center for an imitational concert. Each choir had it’s own unique style and the evening was topped off by the college choirs delightful pieces. The solos and accompanists were an impressive touch and the crowd pleasing show closer was Queen’s “Somebody to Love.” It was an honor to be invited and we thank SHSU director Mr. Franklin for including our choir in this program. The women’s PJ party was a big success! Who doesn’t love hanging out with their besties in their comfy PJ’s? We thank Becks Prime for their generous donation, which allowed the girls to feast upon guacamole and salsa to their hearts content! The men’s lock in was equally a great bonding experience. Chips and queso disappeared like magic! Thanks to the parents that helped by sending in snack foods, treats and their warm personalities as chaperones for our young men and women. WE LOVE OUR PARENT VOLUNTEERS!

“It’s a huge milestone,” Stephenson said. “I’m very proud that each one of those has been with Cy-Falls. I’m proud of the coaching staff and the student athletes who have come through the program throughout these last 20 years, as well as the Cy-Falls administration and parents. Everyone has been so supportive and instrumental in helping make this possible.” Following the victory, her team surprised her with a “500 Wins” t-shirt and banner and campus athletic coordinator Kirk Eaton presented Stephenson with a commemorative “500 Wins” volleyball that was signed by the players and marked with the date and score of the milestone-clinching game. Stephenson said she was aware of the approaching 500th victory, but had kept it a secret from the team until later in the season. “When the secret got out, the team really rallied around that and put a lot of pressure on themselves to make sure they were a part of it,” she said. “That last game was a do-or-die situation; if it didn’t happen then, it would have to be next year. They pressed hard in that game to make sure they got the win.” Stephenson began coaching in 1980 upon graduating from college. She said her career has been filled with memorable achievements, none greater than winning the Class 5A state championship with the Lady Eagles in 2000 alongside current assistant coaches Pam McRae and Cary Stengler. “That was a very special, driven and talented group and winning a state championship is pretty much the top moment in any coach’s career or life,” she said. “That’s the best memory of all amidst a lot of great memories. My players always ask, ‘Coach, how can you remember all these stories?’ and I say, ‘Because they’re great stories.’ This one (victory No. 500) was really cool, too.”

This year our guest speaker is Steve Russell. LTC Steve Russell (Ret.) commanded the central unit responsible in the hunt and capture of Saddam Hussein. Through leadership and joint efforts across multiple teams, a large organization worked effectively to capture one of the world’s most notorious criminals. Russell is an American Hero. His proven leadership and problem-resolution techniques engage audiences through his storytelling.

Salute to Our Heroes has two purposes. First, to give tribute to our heroes - soldiers serving now, veterans and those who have been wounded or killed in action. We want to honor those who have served their country.

The second purpose is to raise funds for scholarships for Cy-Fair ISD students. Each year we give three scholarships per Cy-Fair ISD high school, and the number of high schools is growing. It has been a challenge keeping up with the demand, but CFEF is dedicated to this mission.

December 2012

Concord Bridge

The inaugural event honors Jersey Village High School graduate 1st Lt. Jeremy E. Ray, who was killed Dec. 20, 2007 while serving his country in Iraq. A CFEF endowment was established in Jeremy’s memory by an anonymous donor. Last year the 1st Lieutenant Jeremy Ray Community Service and Peace Award was presented to Klein Funeral Homes & Memorials.

Following tradition, the event will have the Missing Man Table & Honors Ceremony. The table will have empty table settings with chairs leaning up against the table as though saved for someone. The table settings have a single red rose displayed in a vase in reminder of the bloodshed for our country and the vase was tied with a red ribbon - a symbol of the continued pledge to shed blood for our country. A slice of lemon on the bread plate is a reminder of the bitterness of the loss of comrades in arms; a bowl of salt to symbolize the tears shed by family members of lost loved ones and glasses turned upside down indicate no one will sit there. Last year’s ceremony was performed by the 75th Army Division Honor Guard and was proceeded by Taps performed by William Veenstra, Cy-Fair High School Senior. For more information on the 2013 event please contact Marie Holmes at marie@thecfef.org or 281-807-3591.

2013 Relay For Life of Cy-Fair - Cy Falls High School Friday, April 26, 2013 - 7:00 pm

Come join our planning committee or register your own team to help raise money for cancer in our Cy-Fair community!! The Heart of Relay: During the Relay for Life event, three ceremonies are held Survivors Lap: To start Relay, those who have survived their battle with cancer join together to walk a lap celebrating their victories over the disease. Luminaria Ceremony: At dark, the track is lined with candle-lit bags bearing the names of those who have been touched by or have lost their lives to cancer. Fight Back Ceremony: Before participants leave Relay, they make a personal commitment to help fight back against cancer in several ways.

As interest in Relay for Life grew in the Houston area, the American Cancer Society began forming events in local communities and the first Cy-Fair Relay for Life committee was formed in 2004. This is our 9th year in Cy-Fair and our goal is to reach the $1 Million Dollar Mark. We are very close and only need $150,000 to meet our goal and with YOUR help, we can make this goal a reality!! 100% of our profits go to ACS to use for research and other programs. With more than 1,000 participants in last year’s Relay, we know that we can grow even bigger this year! 2012-2013 Season Kimberly Akimbo, By David Lindsay-Abaire, Directed by Ron Jones, STUDIO 101 (1824 Spring Street, Houston 77007). Kimberly Akimbo is a play written in 2000 by Pulitzer prize-winning playwright David Lindsay-Abaire. Its title character is a lonely teenage girl suffering from a disease a lot like progeria, that causes her to age 4 and a half times as fast as normal. Thus, Kimberly is trapped inside the frail physical body of an elderly woman. She meets another misfit (a teenage boy) and the two form an attachment to one another that borders on attraction. The situation is not helped by Kimberly’s rapidly deteriorating health. Soon Kimberly’s family gets mixed up in some crazy money schemes and the family gets emotionally destroyed.

“I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ? We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through December. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.

With the help of sponsors, donors and the over 170 that attended we were able to raise nearly $8,000 for the Zeta Tau Alpha Foundation in support of Breast Cancer Education & Awareness!! With the support of our community and surrounding area businesses the silent auction provided 44 great baskets, raising over $4,000 alone, along with many great raffle and door prize items! A special congratulations goes out to our 2012 Texas Hold’em Tournament champion, Adam Brashier and the High Roller of the evening, Bruce Newton! Both Adam and Bruce took home great prize baskets we are sure they will enjoy! Check out event photos at http://bellanovafoto.smugmug.com/ Zeta2012/Zeta-Casino-Night-2012!
