ANNUAL MEETING AND ELECTIONS

The annual meeting and elections will be held November 4, 2015. Please watch your mail for your notice and proxy form. If you are not able to attend the meeting, please sign and return your proxy as soon as possible. If we do not have a quorum, we will have to reschedule the meeting at an additional meeting cost. It is to everyone’s benefit that we assure a quorum.

NEW MANAGEMENT COMPANY A new management company will be announced in November. The decision on that change was not made prior to the deadline for The Crier. Please watch your mail and/or marquees for the contact information on our new company.

TRASH & RECYCLE PICKUP CHANGES Horsepen Bayou MUD Only - RECYCLE DAY IS MONDAY Effective October 1, 2015, the Horsepen Bayou MUD portion of Concord Bridge will have a new company, Texas Pride Disposal. Trash picked up days will remain Monday and Thursday. Recycle day will be Monday. Texas Pride Disposal has provided a new recycle bin. The new recycle bin is black with a gray top. The statement on the top says it is to be used for recycle only. DO NOT USE THE RECYCLE BIN FOR TRASH.

THANKSGIVING TRADITIONS Parades, football and turkey. These are the things many of us count on for Thanksgiving Day. In the US, Thanksgiving Day is celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November. Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Japan, Korea, Liberia and Switzerland also celebrate an official Thanksgiving Day. When you, your family and friends are celebrating this year, please remember our troops around the world. They are the reason we have the freedom to give thanks again this holiday season.

PREPARING FOR WINTER There’s nothing as serene as a warm, crackling fire on a cold, winter night. There’s also nothing more dangerous if your chimney is damaged. Broken or cracked chimneys can let heat, smoke and toxic gasses, such as carbon monoxide, into your home. Your home could even catch fire. Chimney damage is often obvious, but sometimes it can be hidden. Use the following checklist, provided by Ready Virginia! to help ensure that you can enjoy your fireplace and avoid problems - or even a disaster: • Check to see if bricks have fallen or the chimney is leaning. • Look for shiny areas on your exterior metal chimney pipe. This could mean the chimney has shifted - during the recent East Coast earthquake, for instance.

• Look for cracks at joints where the chimney connects to the firebox, at the roofline and in the attic. • Check for debris that may have fallen into the fireplace. • Use a screwdriver to check the mortar between the bricks or stones. If it crumbles when you pick at it, the chimney may be a hazard and probably needs work. • When in doubt, consult a licensed engineer or contractor. For the name of an inspector, call your insurance or mortgage company. Remember, disasters can happen even in the best of homes. That’s why every home should be equipped with carbon monoxide and smoke detectors. Here are a few tips: • Install carbon monoxide and smoke detectors in sleeping areas and on every level of your home and away from air vents. Interconnected smoke alarms are best, because if one sounds, they all sound. • Test smoke alarms monthly and change alkaline batteries at least once a year. Use a familiar date, such as your birthday or when you change your clocks, as a reminder. • Prepare and practice a fire escape route with everyone in your home, including children. For more information, visit www.usfa.dhs.gov/smokealarms.

ANNUAL HOMEOWNERS FEES Due January 1, 2016 You will receive your statement for 2016 fees in November. Please return your association fee payment to the address shown on your statement. Last year some fees were sent to an incorrect address. This resulted in fees arriving late. It is your responsibility to assure the correct address is used. This is often a problem because homeowners did not confirm the address in the bill pay system for their bank. CONCORD BRIDGE PETS Have you lost a pet or found a dog or cat? You can contact the Concord Bridge Pet Hotline at 281-468-9414 and on the Facebook account, www.facebook.com/#!/Concordbridgehotline. You can use this source to report lost and found animals. This has been a great help in returning lost and found animals to their owners. Even if you don’t have access to Facebook, you can call 281-468-9414. It is far more efficient than posting illegal signs all over the neighborhood. Harris County requires that all pets be on a leash or confined within your yard. Unleashed dogs are a nuisance to your neighbors and other pets. Please pick up all dog waste and dispose of it properly. Remember, our children play in the park areas and their yards. It’s very inconsiderate of you to allow your dog to defecate if others yards and the parks. When walking your dogs, please be prepared to remove any waste they may leave behind.

RACQUET SPORTS COURT The courts have been restriped to accommodate pickleball, as well as tennis. Please be respectful of your neighbors and do not try to monopolize the court. Violations of the rules can result in the revocation of your court privileges. If you missed the on-site pickup for the new racquet sports court keys, you can obtain one by following the instructions below. IMPORTANT INSTRUCTIONS/REQUIREMENTS for obtaining a new key: • Complete the form below and bring it with you to get a new key. • $20 deposit is required in order to get a key. If you have an old tennis court key, bring it with you and you will not be charged a new deposit. Note: You must present the old key at time of getting new key - we will not accept sending it in

FALL LAWN CARE - QUICK TIP!

Fall brings back ideal growing conditions for your lawn. Cool nights, warm days, ample rainfall and morning dew are just about as good as it gets for grass. Now the lawn is ready to grow again and is looking for the nutrients it needs to recover from summer damage. Some experts will say this is the single most important lawn feeding of the year. Apply your final feeding of Scotts® Turf Builder® WinterGuard® Fall Lawn Food right before the winter months, when grass is prepping for a winter nap. This will strengthen roots and increase nitrogen storage for an early spring green up and a healthier lawn next year. Courtesy of scotts.com

GARDENING TIPS FOR NOVEMBER

• Brown patch will continue to plague St. Augustine lawns as nights get cooler and humidity and rain continue. Discolored circles will appear in low areas almost overnight. Apply a fungicide recommended for brown patch according to label directions. Avoid walking through brown-patched turf. It spreads easily from the bottom of your shoes. If brown patch appears in the same lawn areas every year, add an inch or two of sandy topsoil to eliminate those low spots. • Fertilize St. Augustine turf with a winterizing formula to promote root growth over the winter months. Lower your lawn mover blades now and mow on a schedule that cuts no more than one-third of the grass blade away. • As chrysanthemums and other perennials finish blooming, cut flowering stalks to the ground to permit all strength to be used in making root growth. • Feed roses lightly, but avoid nitrogen fertilizers. Do not prune now. Keep up spraying program and water deeply. • Remove dead foliage and plant debris to help eradicate insects and disease organisms. Thin out and transfer volunteer seedlings. Beds made now will benefit by weathering before being planted. If soil is heavy, dig six inches deep, leave rough, cover with gymsum and strawy manure, water and allow to mellow. • Bananas are more likely to bear fruit if the trunk does not die back in winter. Cut banana stalks back to six feet, wrap with newspaper and burlap. • Continue mulching for winter. Build up a thick top mulch to protect roots from freezing and winter drying. Don’t throw away those pine tree needles; they make great acidic mulch for azaleas, gardenias and next Spring’s impatiens. • Place pansies in beds after weather has cooled. Use a little blood meat mixed in soil under each plant. • Now is the best time to plant trees and shrubs.

BLACK FRIDAY TIPS

• The best deals are usually on the big-ticket items (think over $500). If you’re thinking about buying a big-ticket item, Black Friday is a good time. • The goal of major retailers is to keep you in the store! They want you to do more of your shopping in their store to increase market share. Be aware and don’t get distracted or overwhelmed. Plan ahead and know the store layout! • Bring someone with you to split up and conquer tasks! • Popular items, especially Black Friday Doorbusters, will sell out and aren’t available via raincheck. If there’s a deal you have to have, make sure you get it early! • Check online: some deals can be had online without the inperson hassle. But many deals are only in stores or only online, so make sure you double check! • Wear comfy shoes, bring snacks, water and stay patient, don’t let it get to you too much! There’s always CyberMonday! Courtesy of marioarmstrong.com/blackfriday

The 110 member Cypress Ridge Symphony Orchestra is among six international high school orchestras that will perform at the conference. Every year, groups of every type and size from all over the world apply for the honor of performing at the conference. The Cypress Ridge Symphony Orchestra was chosen based on its excellent resume of past contest performances and on a recorded audition submitted in March.

Moms and daughters enjoyed a fun and energizing morning of fitness and connection with Shield Bearer’s Mother Daughter Strong 2015. Mother Daughter Strong event was created as a way for moms and daughters to celebrate their relationship, find support and encouragement, explore new habits and conversations and have fun! Attendee and mom, Leslie McKeand said, “What I liked most about Mother Daughter Strong was being able to connect with my daughter in a new and different way. We were able to start a conversation about things that are important, like loving ourselves. Getting teenagers to open up about their feelings and express love for themselves is important as they start spending more time with outside influences like friends and social media. It was a great reminder to keep having those conversations.” For more information about how to bring Mother Daughter Strong to your church or social group, visit shieldbearer.org or contact Melissa at events@ shieldbearer.org or 281-894-7222.

Cypress Assistance Ministries was founded in July of 1990, with a ministry serving macaroni and cheese meals from the backseat of a car. Within a year CAM was its own entity, with nonprofit status in place, poised to grow. Today, CAM serves members of the community in crisis, providing financial assistance primarily toward rent and utilities, food for individuals and families with children, offers resume updates and mock interviews, job counseling and job leads through the Operation Jobs program, in addition to ESL and GED classes on a year-round basis. Cypress Assistance Ministries will kick off a capital campaign in the near future as construction plans are finalized. The new location will be less than 2 miles from the existing location, just east of Huffmeister on Cypress North Houston Road.

“I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ?

We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through November. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.
