GARDEN TIPS FOR JULY • Plant fall flowering annuals where your spring annuals have bloomed out. Set our seeds like zinnia, marigold, cosmos, petunia and portulaca so you’ll have color until frost. Don’t let seedlings dry out. • In summer, prune roses to keep them in shape. Continue black spot and insect treatments. Water 2” once per week. • Remove spent crepe myrtle flowers to prolong bloom production. • Weeds rob plants of valuable water, nutrients--remove them. • Great sun/heat-lovers include coral honeysuckle, coreopsis, lantana, oleanders and hamelia. • Fertilize flowers lightly, if at all; too hot for heavy feedings. • Water your lawn longer but less frequent. Deep water of about 2 - 3” per week forces plant roots to grow down, instead of sideways into sunbaked upper soil levels. Use a bowl in your yard to measure during waterings.

You always know when an animal has met an untimely and unfortunate death when you see Black Vultures or Turkey Vultures. The Black Vulture has a featherless black-grey head while the Turkey Vulture has a featherless red head. The Black Vulture is also distinguishable by white-tipped wings that can be seen while in flight. Their diets consist primarily of carrion but the Black Vulture will sometimes attack and kill prey.

Turkey Vultures use their eyesight and keen sense of smell to find their food. By flying low, they are able to detect the gases produced when an animal begins to decay. They prefer to feed on animals that are recently dead. Black Vultures can’t smell but will often follow Turkey Vultures to find food. Most of what vultures eat would make any other animal very sick, but they are strong animals with an incredible digestive system and a very strong immune system. Their stomachs are extremely acidic. They can usually survive eating carcasses infected with botulism, anthrax, cholera and salmonella. They rid our environment of what could potentially cause the spread of diseases. Because of their eating habits, vultures would probably never win a “My Favorite Bird” contest but they play an important role in keeping our environment cleaner and definitely smelling better. They are nature’s clean-up crew. If you’d like to learn more about the animals that we share our world with, visit our website at www.twrcwildlifecenter. org. Opportunities are also available for in-home and on-site volunteers. TWRC Wildlife Center, 10801 Hammerly Boulevard, Houston, TX 77043. Call 713-468-TWRC.

As summer gets into full swing and vacation plans are made, be sure to let a trusted neighbor know when you will be away. Remember to stop the mail (can be done on-line at https://holdmail.usps.com/holdmail/ or at the post office, 3 day minimum). Either stop newspaper delivery (https://myaccount.houstonchronicle.com/Login.aspx and log into your account) or arrange for someone to keep them from collecting in front of your Our experience is that the newspaper never stopped coming even though we requested a stop, so we just have someone pick up the newspaper. There is a great video online at www.howcast. com/videos/369734-How-to-Secure-Your-Home-while-Youreon-Vacation with some simple tips on securing your home. One simple suggestion you might not think of, is to lock your garage doors from the inside, then unplug the garage door opener. This prevents someone from using a decoder and entering your garage and home.

2. Adjust your TV’s settings (turn Auto Brightness Control on and Quick Start off). Many digital TVs come with a feature called Automatic Brightness Control (ABC), which, if enabled, causes your TV to automatically adjust the screen’s brightness to the room’s light levels. So if you’re watching TV at night in a dimly lit room, the screen doesn’t need to be as bright and your TV will use less power. Also some smart (Internet-connected TVs) come with a Quick Start feature. While the TV will power up a few seconds faster when selected, this feature can be very wasteful because some TVs chug away at more than 20 watts 24/7 rather than 0.3 watts without the feature enabled. So turn this feature off if you can wait the few extra seconds. 3. Wash clothes in cold water and use the fastest spin speed available. Today’s clothes washers and detergents are designed to effectively clean clothes in cold water. This avoids having to heat the 15 or so gallons of water used per load. If you have a front-loading washer, select the machine’s highest spin speed, which will remove more of the moisture from your clothes so you’ll cut dryer time and save money, too. 4. Turn off the Instant-on setting on the Xbox One. This game console is shipped with the Instant On feature enabled, which causes it to continuously use 12.5 watts even when turned off. Selecting the Energy-Saving mode instead can cut your Xbox’s total annual energy use by more than a third.

5. Turn off your furnace when the cold weather ends. Like many other modern appliances, home central heating systems (furnaces) use electricity even when they’re not operating. According to a Home Energy article, many furnaces draw 8 to 12 watts of standby power 24/7 when not in use. To eliminate this waste during the 9-10 months when you don’t need heat, switch off the power to the furnace.
Earn a degree. Not debt. LSC-CyFair offers affordable and flexible options!
6. Buy a new toilet that uses no more than 1.28 gallons per flush. If you’re remodeling or have an older toilet that uses 1.6 gallons per flush or (worse yet) an older one that might be using 5 gallons per flush, swap it out for a more water-efficient toilet. Look for models with a Water Sense label because they’re efficient & also meet various flushing performance requirements. A family of 4 can save 6 gallons of clean drinking water per DAY, simply by switching from a toilet that uses 1.6 to 1.28 gallons per flush.

Ever wondered why we set off gorgeous displays of fireworks in our sky each Fourth of July? Apparently, the history of fireworks in America is as old our country itself.
Singing, Dancing, Games, Crafts and
On our first Independence Day celebration, held in Philadelphia on July 4, 1777, when the country was still in the midst of the Revolutionary War against Britain, citizens came together to watch their new nation’s sky illuminated in a grand display meant to raise spirits.
Fireworks certainly have grown and not only in complexity. The American Pyrotechnics Association (APA) estimates that more than 14,000 fireworks displays light up the nation’s sky each Independence Day. Courtesy of: www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/07/02/fireworksamerican-history_n_5552960.html

One of our Founding Fathers had even predicted that Americans would commemorate their independence with pomp and circumstance. On July 3, 1776, a day ahead of the Continental Congress’ initial adoption of the Declaration of Independence, Massachusetts delegate John Adams penned a letter to his wife, envisioning the festivities.

Follow these safety tips when using fireworks: • Never allow young children to play with or ignite fireworks. • Avoid buying fireworks that are packaged in brown paper because this is often a sign that the fireworks were made for professional displays and that they could pose a danger to consumers. • Always have an adult supervise fireworks activities. Parents don’t realize that young children suffer injuries from sparklers. Sparklers burn at temperatures of about 2,000 degrees - hot enough to melt some metals. • Never place any part of your body directly over a fireworks device when lighting the fuse. Back up to a safe distance immediately after lighting fireworks. • Never try to re-light or pick up fireworks that have not ignited fully. • Never point or throw fireworks at another person. • Keep a bucket of water or a garden hose handy in case of fire or other mishap. • Light fireworks one at a time, then move back quickly. • Never carry fireworks in a pocket or shoot them off in metal or glass containers. • After fireworks complete their burning, douse the spent device with plenty of water from a bucket or hose before discarding it
to prevent a trash fire. • Make sure fireworks are legal in your area before buying or using them. www.cpsc.gov/en/Safety-Education/Safety-Education-Centers/Fireworks/

As we prepare for barbeques and fireworks this Fourth of July, think about how to keep your pets safe and calm during this Independence Day celebration .• It is safer to keep your pets at home during Fourth of July celebrations instead of bringing him/her to your neighbor’s party. • Dogs can be startled by the loud noise of fireworks. Once the festivities begin, keep your pet in a safe room where he/she can feel comfortable. • Block outside sights and sounds by lowering the blinds and turning on the television. Play soothing music in the background to counteract the cacophony during the rockets’ red glare. • Avoid scraps from the grill. While tempting to our pets, any sudden change to your pets’ diet can cause stomach upset. In addition, some certain foods like onions, avocado, grapes and raisins can be toxic. • Human products can be dangerous to animals. Avoid spraying your pet with insect repellent and only use special sunscreen that is intended for animal use. • Keep your pets away from matches and lighter fluid. They can be extremely irritating to the stomach, lungs and central nervous system, if ingested. Article courtesy of www.akc.org/press-center/july-4-tips

HOUSTON FAMILY ARTS CENTER REMAINING 2015 SEASON EXPLORING LIFE, LOVE & LAUGHTER
The Houston Family Arts Center (HFAC) announces its 10th mainstage season, which explores life, love and laughter through timeless musicals, zany comedies, a classic murder mystery and a Shakespearean comedy.
2015
• Shakespeare - comes to life, June 12th - July 5th with A Midsummer Night’s Dream. The canon’s most enchanted comedy pursues love with calculated abandon! This story of mortal and immortal paramours set in a mythical forest is one that will cast a spell on lovers of all ages.
• 1776 - Closing this exciting season, July 24th - August 16th, is the American musical, 1776. With revolutionary immediacy, our lofty founding fathers are found to be genuine people who debate, bargain and fray one another’s nerves as they struggle on the tortuous road to independence. This musical witness to the creation of one of the most eloquent documents in history will stir the soul of every American. All performances are on the HFAC Garza Mainstage, recently named “Houston’s Best Gem of a Theatre” by the Houston Press, except for Peter Pan, which will be performed at the Berry Center. Season subscriptions packages are now available for purchase for the 2014-2015 season. Season subscriptions offer incentives and discounts to new and returning patrons for every performance and packages start as low as $100. Patrons can purchase their subscriptions online at www.houstonfac.coM or call the HFAC box office at 281-685-6374.

“I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ?
We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through July. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.
