CONGRATULATIONS CLASS OF 2015! Happy FATHERS’s Day! GARDEN TIPS FOR JUNE

Lawns • Apply iron sulfate or chelete to St. Augustine grass lawns. • Mow St. Augustine to a 2-inch height now to protect roots from the sun. Never cut off more than a third of the leaf. • Continue treatment of lawns for chinch bug. As the temperature hits 80 degrees, chinch bugs begin to reproduce in the hottest and driest part of the lawn, usually next to cement. Use diazinon or dursban granules. Flowers • Overwatered hibiscus, purslane and bougainvillea won’t bloom. • Keep flowers pinched off of coleus and caladiums to encourage more of the beautiful foliage. • Plants to set: Acalpha, Ageratum, Alternathera, Aspidistra, Artemisia, Balsam, Begonia, Chrysanthemum, Cockscomb, Coleus, Croton, Dusty Miller, Feverfew, Gaillardia, Geranium, Marigold, Petunia, Pinks, Portulaca, Salvia-red, Shrimp Plant, Torenia, Verbena and Vinca. Vegetables • A strong blast of water in the morning rids plants of most bugs for the rest of the day. • Vegetables to plant: Cantaloupe, Sweet Corn, Cucumber, Eggplant sets, Okra, Black Peas, Pepper Sets, Summer Squash and Sweet Potato. Shrubs • Watch Camellias and Azaleas, they’re setting their blooms now for next season. So give them a good mulch and plenty of water. Mulch well with oak leaves and/or pine needles to keep soil acidic. Benefits of Mulching: Mulching (organic or inorganic) is a layer of material on the surface of the soil around the plant. Mulches conserve water by reducing evaporation, insulates the soil and protects it from the drying wind and hot sun. Mulches break the force of rain and irrigation water and tend to prevent erosion, soil compaction, and crusting. Lastly, a 2-3 inch layer of mulch will almost eliminate weed problems.

DON’T GET BURNED! SUMMER SAFETY TIPS

Summer is here! Who doesn’t want to be outside, sunbathing, swimming, playing catch on the beach or just barbequing in the backyard? While summer means fun in the sun, make sure you’re not getting too much of a good thing. Avoid consequences of overexposure to the sun like sunburns, premature aging of the skin, wrinkling and skin cancer, including melanoma by practicing proper sun protection. The hours between 10 AM and 4 PM daylight savings time are the most hazardous for UV exposure in the continental United States. UV rays are the greatest during the late spring and early summer in North America. CDC recommends easy options for sun protection: Sunscreen • Use sunscreen with the sun protective factor (SPF) 15 or higher and both UVA and UVB protection. • Sunscreen wears off. Put it on again if you stay out in the sun for more than two hours and after you swim or do things that make you sweat. • Check the sunscreen’s expiration date. Sunscreen without an expiration date has a shelf life of no more than three years, but its shelf life is shorter if if has been exposed to high temperatures. Clothing • Wear clothing to protect exposed skin. • Loose-fitting long-sleeved shirts and long pants made from tightly woven fabric offer the best protection from the sun’s UV rays. A wet tshirt offers much less UV protection than a dry one. Darker colors may offer more protection than lighter colors. • If wearing this type of clothing isn’t practical, at least try to wear a tshirt or a beach cover-up. Keep in mind that a typical t-shirt has an SPF rating lower than 15, so use other types of protection as well. Hats • Wear a hat with a wide brim to shade the face, head, ears and neck. • For the most protection, wear a hat with a brim all the way around that shades your face, ears and the back of your neck. A tightly woven

Shade • Seek shade, especially during midday hours. • You can reduce your risk of skin damage and skin cancer by seeking shade under an umbrella, tree or other shelter before you need relief from the sun. Your best bet to protect your skin is to use sunscreen or wear protective clothing when you’re outside - even when you’re in the shade. For more information, please visit www.cdc.gov/cancer/skin/basic_info/prevention.htm or call 800-CDC-INFO.

FATHER’S DAY JUNE 21ST

The third Sunday in June is Dad’s time in the sun. And contrary to what some cynics contend, this holiday was not the invention of a greeting card company - commercial greeting cards as we know them didn’t even exist when Sonora Smart Dodd thought up Father’s Day in 1909. Father’s Day was the brainchild of Sonora Smart Dodd, whose mother had died giving birth to her. At a time when many widowed men sent their offspring to live with relatives, Sonora’s father reared her and her five siblings alone on a farm in eastern Washington. In 1909, grown and married, Sonora was in church listening to a Mother’s Day sermon when the thought struck her that fathers deserved credit too, especially hers. Through her efforts, Spokane, Washington held the first Father’s Day observance the following year. By 1924, the custom had spread through the country and Calvin Coolidge made the first presidential proclamation in support of Father’s Day. Nearly 60 years later, President Richard Nixon made it permanent in 1972, when he requested that Congress pass a joint resolution making the third Sunday in June a National Day of Observance in honor of fathers everywhere.

Sunglasses • Sunglasses protect your eyes from UV rays and reduce the risk of cataracts. They also protect the tender skin around your eyes from son exposure. • Wear sunglasses that wrap around and block as close to 100% of both UVA and UVB rays as possible. • Sunglasses that block both UVA and UVB rays offer the best protection. Most sunglasses sold in the United States, regardless of cost, meet this standard.

No gym access. No Zumba class. Possibly no familiar streets for a quick 5-miler. YES - you CAN be healthy and fit while on vacation. You just have to try:

fabric, such as canvas, works best to protect your skin from UV rays. Avoid straw hats with holes that let sunlight through. A darker hat may offer more UV protection. • If you wear a baseball cap, you should also protect your ears and the back of your neck by wearing clothing that covers those areas, using sunscreen with at least SPF 15 or by staying in the shade.

1) Make healthy living on the road a priority! Yes, you DO have time to exercise, you just need to make time for it. You can complete a workout in 20 minutes in your hotel room or hostel. 2) Walking for the win. Do everything you can to walk as often as possible. There’s no better way to explore a city than on foot: you get to exercise and explore. 3) Playgrounds and parks are everywhere: use them. Check google maps for parks and walk over there for your workouts; you can do pull ups on swing sets or tree branches. 4) Remember that your diet is 80% of the battle. Consider upping your food budget, even slightly so you can eat healthier. Bags of rice and/or pasta for every meal: processed carbs and very little else. Get some protein! 5) Do the best you can. If you only have 10 minutes to exercise, exercise for 10 minutes! Every little bit adds up and 10 minutes is better than nothing. If you have to eat poorly at the train station, make up for it the next day. 6) Employ the “Never 2” rule. If you miss a day of exercise for whatever reason, don’t allow yourself to miss two days in a row. If you eat one bad meal, that next meal should be healthy. Never two in a row. 7) Have fun. Don’t be afraid to have late nights with friends or say yes to crazy adventures. Just make sure you get right back on track as soon as possible after, so you don’t lose the momentum you’ve built up.

BEST SUMMER JOBS FOR TEENS

That first summer job is often a rite of passage for a teen. It’s the signal that you’re on your way to adulthood and it’s also a method for earning money to pay for activities, interests or to stash away for post-secondary schooling. However, the type of summer job any teen opts for should be based upon his or her current and desired skill sets and on his or her ultimate career goals, thus proving that it’s never too early to start considering the future. • • • •

HOUSTON FAMILY ARTS CENTER REMAINING 2015 SEASON EXPLORING LIFE, LOVE & LAUGHTER

The Houston Family Arts Center (HFAC) announces its 10th mainstage season, which explores life, love and laughter through timeless musicals, zany comedies, a classic murder mystery and a Shakespearean comedy.

EVEREST VBS AT EPIPHANY LUTHERAN CHURCH & SCHOOL

2015 • Shakespeare - comes to life, June 12th - July 5th with A Midsummer Night’s Dream. The canon’s most enchanted comedy pursues love with calculated abandon! This story of mortal and immortal paramours set in a mythical forest is one that will cast a spell on lovers of all ages. • 1776 - Closing this exciting season, July 24th August 16th, is the American musical, 1776. With revolutionary immediacy, our lofty founding fathers are found to be genuine people who debate, bargain and fray one another’s nerves as they struggle on the tortuous road to independence. This musical witness to the creation of one of the most eloquent documents in history will stir the soul of every American.

Join us for a fun week as we CHILL out this summer on the coolest mountain of all. At Everest VBS your child will learn about God’s Mighty Power. This VBS will be a crowd pleaser filled with fun team building games, music, Bible adventures, delicious snacks and our favorite Imagination Station where kids get to make and take home a neat Science-gizmo that reinforces what they have learned. The youth will also collect offerings to send New Testament full color Bibles to Thailand! VBS is open to all youth ages 3 years old (must be potty trained) through entering 5th grade. Youth entering 6th grade - adult can register online to volunteer! VBS is June 8th-12th from 9 AM-12:30 PM. Register online at www.elcsh.org or www.epiphanylutheranschool.org. 281-788-2047 BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA COPPERHEAD DISTRICT For 100 years, Scouting programs have instilled in youth the values found in the Scout Oath and Scout Law. Today, these values are just as relevant in helping youth grow to their full potential as they were in 1910. Scouting helps youth develop academic skills, self-confidence, ethics, leadership skills, outdoor skills and citizenship skills that influence their adult lives. The Boy Scouts of America provides youth with programs and activities that allow them to: • Try new things. • Provide service to others. • Build self-confidence. • Reinforce ethical standards. Scouting provides youth with a sense that they are important as individuals while promoting activities that lead to personal responsibility and high self-esteem. As a result, when hard decisions have to be made, peer pressure can be resisted and the right choices can be made. Scouting provides a rewarding experience for boys ages 5 to 21. Scouting through the local Packs and Troops teach outdoor and life skills which help our youth Be Prepared. Your area is serviced by the BSA Sam Houston Area Counsel - Copperhead District which includes 23 Cub Scout Packs (boys 5 to 10 years old), 13 Troops (boys from 11 to 18 years old) and 10 Venturing units (boys and girls from 14 to 21). “I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ?

We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through June. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.
