HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Your community HOA Board hopes 2016 will be a great and prosperous new year for you and your family. The winners of the Christmas Yard Decorating for the North and South of our community will be posted in next month’s newsletter.

COMMUNITY PROJECTS UPDATES

1. Work to repair the erosion behind the lake wall has been delayed by the contractor and will not be done until January 2016. 2. The gutters on the community/pool house were replaced along with the rotted wood on the eaves. This project is complete. 3. There is a section of concrete in the pool parking lot that has collapsed around the drain. We have received bids for the work and a contract was released for work to begin as soon as possible. 4. The Board is in the process of meeting with each of our major contractors to review their 2015 performance and to provide and receive feedback on things we could do better to improve the community. SPECIAL NOTE: MUD 172 has to do some necessary maintenance work to the retention pond in Copper Village located on Gentle Stone Dr. The work will include the hauling of dirt in and out of this area and there will be a number of dump trucks on the street during this time. The contractor has agreed to limit it to about five trucks to cut down on the congestion on the street. Also, they will not be parking the work crew’s vehicles on the street. They will have to barricade a portion of the sidewalk during this time so try to avoid this area if possible. They will be cleaning the street on a regular basis to cut down on the mud and dust. This project started in mid-December and will take

DID YOU KNOW?... DEED RESTRICTIONS:

Fences

• Wood Fence Construction. Wooden fences facing the front street or along any side street, rear street property line or greenbelt shall be constructed with all pickets on the outside so that no posts or rails are visible from the street. • All other wooden fences must be constructed in the manner described above or must be constructed in panels (each of which is 6 to 8 feet in length) erected in a “good neighbor” fashion so that posts and rails are exposed only on alternate panels when viewed from either side of the fence. Gates

• All gates shall be constructed with the same materials as the fence. The hinges and latches used on the gate should be of the same style and quality of those used throughout the subdivision. • Color. Wood fences: No portion of a wood fence on a lot

which is visible from any street may be painted or stained. • Wrought Iron Fences: Wrought iron fences must be black and no more than six (6’) feet in height. Spacing bars must be no greater than four (4’) inches on center. The location of all wrought iron fences must be approved by the Committee. Chain Link and Wire Fences: There shall be no chain link or wire fences.

MISCELLANOUS NOTES

• If you walk your dog, please be respectful by taking a pooperscooper and bag with you. Many homeowners are having a problem with dogs defecating on their lawns or worse still - on their sidewalks. • Maybe you received a violation notice from First Services Management. No need to be upset. It’s possible that the Deed Restriction Team came by your home on a day you have just put your trash can out. We all have a part to abide within the guidelines of the deed restrictions. The community is working hard to keep our neighborhood in good shape. • We have had concerns with too many cars that are parked in the cul-de-sacs. Please use your driveway to park your cars. Reasons are: 1. It’s a courtesy issue. Those in the back of the cul-de-sac have a hard time getting out of a restricted area. So be courteous of other homeowners. 2. It’s a safety issue. If someone in your cul-de-sac had a fire, the fire truck wouldn’t be able to get to it. So think of creative ways to park your vehicle that won’t affect your neighbors.

GARDENING TIPS FOR JANUARY

713-458-0000 (cell)

• Birds: Provide food and fresh water. More birds die from lack of water than from lack of food. • Cacti: Semi-dormant now. Reduce watering. • Camellias: Plants may be moved. Pick up and discard fallen blooms. • Cultivation: Changes in design may now be made, new beds dug and old ones rebuilt. Correct defects in drainage. Incorporate gypsum into heavy soils: repeat in three weeks. Dig granite dust, rock phosphate and quantities of organic matter into soil. Allow time for settling before planting. • Fertilize: Daylilies, spuria, Louisiana and bearded irises with complete fertilizer. Give strawberries 1 teaspoon ammonium sulfate, keeping six inches away from plant. Fertilize pansies with manure tea or blood meal. Water in. • Fruits: Plant fruit trees. Mulch figs with grass or straw to prevent freeze damage to crown. • House Plants: Water, when surface soil is crumbly dry. Wash dust off leaves to open pores. Mist often. Inspect for diseases and insects. Reduce water for poinsettias. • Lawns: Remove thatch aerate, and feed with low nitrogen mixture. • Pests: For petal blight prevention, spray azaleas and camellias as flowers open. Spray for scale with dormant oil solution if temperature will be above 35˚ and below 85˚ for next 48 hours. Always read and heed manufacturer’s directions before spraying. • Propagation: Ivy cuttings root easily this month and next. Root cuttings of shrubs in mixture of loam and coarse sand; keep damp and semi-shaded until rooted. • Prune: Fruit trees in advance of new growth. Prune to groom and shape. Do not remove too much. Remove dead wood from trees and

shrubs before spring buds swell, but do not prune spring bloomers. Prune crape myrtles. Prune nandina and others of similar growth habit by cutting unwanted canes out at base of plant. • Roses: Annual pruning about the middle of February, just before the spring buds break. To prevent later appearance of disease in the old beds, keep garden clean of debris and weeds. Complete preparation of new beds for roses. • Transplanting: January is one of the best months to transplant woody plants, both evergreen and deciduous, especially trees. Energy will be expended on roots instead of foliage. Learn ultimate size and cultural needs of tree or plant before buying. Consider dwarf varieties to avoid crowding later. Group plants of similar cultural needs. Do not work wet soil. Assure good drainage. Keep plants moist. • Vegetables: Prepare beds, preferably raised for drainage, with about 50% humus, including rotted manure. • Winter Protection: Expect freeze any time; plan for protection of tender plants. Water. Remove coverings, particularly plastic, when temperature rises. Protect low plants with dry leaves, pine needles or soil mulch, but remove when weather warms.

COVENANT ACADEMY NEWS

Covenant Academy charter group donates over 100 poinsettias and spreads Christmas cheer to Cypress area senior citizens. The Covenant Academy charter of American Heritage Girl (AHG) Troop TX 5555 participated in #GivingTuesday. The global day of giving, harnesses the collective power of individuals, communities and organizations to encourage philanthropy and to celebrate generosity worldwide. Through the generous donations of family and friends, AHG Troop 555 delivered 102 poinsettias to senior citizens at the Grace Care Center and Avanti Senior Living in Cypress. In addition troop members entertained the elderly whom they call “grandfriends” with Christmas carols, bingo games and treats.

Congratulations to the first graduating Senior Class at Covenant Academy. College acceptances to date include Texas A&M, University of Alabama Honors School of Engineering, Texas State University, Houston Baptist University, Belhaven University, Auburn University, Sam Houston State, LeTourneau University, Stephen F Austin State University. We are so proud of each of you!

Copper Village

National Archery Champion visits Covenant Academy. Seventh grade students recently learned how to shoot arrows like a master archer… or rather a High Elf of Lothlorien. Having recently finished reading J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Fellowship of the Ring,” the students celebrated their accomplishment with a feast in CA’s wooded Preserve. Much like the Fellowship prepared to feast with the elves as a farewell to Lorien, CA’s fellowship of learners paused to celebrate their journey together as they look forward to reading the next great book. Because the elves are great archers, Covenant Academy invited James Loesch, winner of 14 national titles, to attend as master instructor and honorary Elf. Loesch and Houston Archery Lessons gave each student a lesson in how to shoot. Students also dressed in costume and shared a meal.

Copper Creek Meadows Community held a “Cookie Kickoff” for the Annual Girl Scout Cookie Sale. We celebrated the 10th anniversary of the “Lemonade” cookie and enjoyed “frosted lemonade.” We also learned fun facts about Girl Scout cookies, played games and did other activities to help develop skills such as goal planning and financial responsibility. The annual Girl Scout Cookie Sale began on Dec. 19th and continues through March. Sales of Girl Scout Cookies provide funds for individual troop activities and help to support our Council camps and a variety of programs. Proceeds from the Cookie sale help to feed and shoe the horses, maintain the sailboats and canoes and buy archery equipment. We greatly appreciate the support of our friends and neighbors! Thank you! Information on Council Day and resident camps has been sent to registered girls, but you can also check on the Council website, www. gssjc.org. Troop 113017 celebrated the birthday of Juliette Gordon Low, our Founder, with a pajama party on Oct 31st. The pink hats and a variety of masks added to the fun. Troop 113035 participated in a painting badge workshop at Rice University. The workshop finished with a birthday celebration and cake for Juliette! Our Leader/Daughter holiday craft event was a lot of fun for those who attended. Thanks to all who assisted with the event! Our Spring Leader/Daughter event is coming up in April. This is always a popular event, with camping, shopping and all kinds of activities. In the past, activities have included riding, rock climbing, talent show and Dutch Oven Cook-off. Can’t wait to find out what is on the schedule this year. Our World Thinking Day event is coming up in February, when we celebrate our membership in the international Scouting movement and learn about other countries. Last year, we had some very creative booths, decorations and swaps and we can’t wait to see what our troops will be doing this year! Second year Brownie Troop 16150 volunteered to decorate a float for the Great Pyrenees Rescue Group at the Brenham Christmas parade. The girls also made jingle sticks and walked with the group in the parade. These busy Brownies also joined with other Copper Creek Meadows troops who made cards, letters and drawings for soldiers serving in Afghanistan. Troops from our community also joined in creating ornaments for the Girl Scout Christmas tree at the Museum of Natural Science. This year’s theme was “Back to Nature.” Girl Scouting is open to all girls ages 5 (must be in kindergarten) through 18, who are willing to accept the Girl Scout Promise and Law.

BOY SCOUTS BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA COPPERHEAD DISTRICT

Scouting provides a rewarding experience for boys ages 5 to 21. Scouting through the local Packs and Troops teach outdoor and life skills which help our youth Be Prepared. Your area is serviced by the BSA Sam Houston Area Counsel - Copperhead District which includes 23 Cub Scout Packs (boys 5 to 10 years old), 13 Troops (boys from 11 to 18 years old) and 10 Venturing units (boys and girls from 14 to 21). For 100 years, Scouting programs have instilled in youth the values found in the Scout Oath and Scout Law. Today, these values are just as relevant in helping youth grow to their full potential as they were in 1910. Scouting helps youth develop academic skills, selfconfidence, ethics, leadership skills, outdoor skills and citizenship skills that influence their adult lives. The Boy Scouts of America provides youth with programs and activities that allow them to: • Try new things. • Provide service to others. • Build self-confidence. • Reinforce ethical standards.

Copper Village

Scouting provides youth with a sense that they are important as individuals while promoting activities that lead to personal responsibility and high self-esteem. As a result, when hard decisions have to be made, peer pressure can be resisted and the right choices can be made.

Over the past 45 years, the Foundation has grown tremendously through the efforts of the Board of Trustees and the generosity of the Cy-Fair Community. The Foundation has awarded more than $6 million in scholarships to 1300 graduating seniors. CFEF is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, all contributions are tax deductible, as allowed by the law. Sponsorships and tickets are available for Salute to Our Heroes. Tickets: $100 individual, $50 veterans. “I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ?

We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through January. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.

St. Cuthbert is located at 17020 West Road, Houston (the northeast corner of West and Queenston). For more information on any of our events, visit us at www.stcuthbert.org. St. Cuthbert Episcopal Church will hold their 15th annual Chili Cook-Off and Chili Bowl on Saturday, January 30th, from 12-2 PM. This event is open to the public. Come and sample our chilies and place your vote for your favorite and see if it becomes the grand prize winner. Then join the team for a fun game of football right on our front lawn. You are invited to St. Cuthbert Episcopal Church’s Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper on February 9th from 5:30-7 PM. We will eat pancakes and play bingo! Shrove Tuesday originated during the Middle Ages. Food items like meats, fats, eggs, milk and fish were regarded as restricted during Lent. To keep such food from being wasted, many families would have big feasts on Shrove Tuesday. The English tradition of eating pancakes on Shrove Tuesday came about as a way to use as much milk, fats and eggs as possible before Ash Wednesday began. In France, the consumption of all fats and fatty foods on this day coined the name “Fat Tuesday” or Mardi Gras. You are invited to the Ash Wednesday services at St. Cuthbert Episcopal Church on February 10th at 6:30 AM, 4:30 PM and 7 PM. All services have Holy Communion and the imposition of ashes. The 4:30 PM service is designed for children and their families. Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the season of Lent, which is dedicated to reflection, prayer and fasting in preparation for Easter.
