Crime Reports

www.crimereports.com CrimeReports is the only near real-time source for both official crime data and sex offender information, giving you access to information from over 700 participating law enforcement agencies across North America and sex offender data for all 50 States. • CrimeReports allows you to filter crimes by location or address, crime type and customizable date range. • View data on the crime map or in a list view. • View national sex offender data alongside crime in your neighborhood. • Sign-up for free, automated, email crime alerts. The Harris County Sheriff’s Office participates in the CrimeReports.com system. See Something, Say Something!! As a reminder, it is critical to be able to recognize something that is out of the ordinary. Although many residents don’t know all their neighbors, they usually

Copperfield

know a few. They also become familiar with patterns of living, like when people leave for work, the cars normally seen in a driveway, etc. It is these patterns that become what we consider “normal.” Whenever we see something that is not normal, it should warrant our attention. It may be a vehicle parked in a driveway or street, it may be someone walking on the street from house to house or it may even look like someone who is working on a project. If anything looks suspicious, call the Sheriff (713-221-6000). If someone knocks on your door, make certain you know who it is before you open the door, it if sounds out of the ordinary, call the Sheriff. If you, in any way, think something may be suspicious, call it in to the Sheriff (713-221-6000)! The Crime Watch Committee also asks you to consider becoming involved in our Crime Watch program. You may contact your village representative listed on the Copperfield website, in the Copperfield newsletter or visit one of our monthly committee meetings (Second Wednesday of each month at the Copperfield Community Center at 6:30 PM). In order to receive updates, you may register at the Copperfield website at: www.copperfield.org/sl_register.php to stay informed and receive crime watch updates. Please continue to call in any and all suspicious activity you observe at any time, to the Sheriff’s Office non-emergency number at 713-2216000 (Option 1 for dispatch). For life threatening emergencies, call 911.

Copperfield Place Village (CPV) A WORD FROM THE BOARD

The board wishes all the homeowners a Merry Christmas and Happy New year! We hope that the New Year brings us all prosperity, good health and goodwill. The drive through for the Christmas home decorations will be held the 2nd weekend before Christmas day around December 8th and 9th. The Board members will select 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners. The three winners will be contacted to receive their gift certificate if selected. Contact SCS to learn about our next scheduled board meeting. We are desperately looking for a volunteer to keep our 7 Villages’ website up to date. Unfortunately, the webmaster we had doing this for years moved and no longer is available to do this task for Copperfield. If you are interested, please contact Nancy at SCS Management.

If you are interested in being a volunteer, please call SCS and leave your name and telephone number and someone will be contacting you. We are still in need of block captains. Remember, if you see anything suspicious, call the Non-Emergency number below. Don’t wait until it is too late. REMINDER: It is imperative that we try to get involved. (CPV) DEED RESTRICTIONS

PARKING & DEED RESTRICTION VIOLATIONS

Despite our efforts to keep our neighborhood looking good, sending reminders, letters, etc. There are still some homeowners that keep their old utility trailers parked in their driveway, as well as inoperable vehicles. Unauthorized vehicles are still an eye sore throughout the neighborhood and these few homeowners continue to violate these restrictions and obviously do not take pride in our subdivision. It is allowable to park your vehicle in the street; however, DO NOT park it in such a way that emergency vehicles cannot drive through or block wheel chair accessibility! Fire trucks are not able to get through when vehicles are parked on BOTH sides of the street and it becomes too narrow. Some homeowners are parking at the end of the cul-de-sacs and not allowing people access to get their mail. These vehicles can and will be towed in an emergency at the homeowner’s expense. VEHICLES ARE REPORTED BEING PARKED IN THE POOL/PARKING AREA AFTER HOURS. TOWING WILL ALSO BE AT THE OWNERS’ EXPENSE.

APPROVALS FOR MODIFICATIONS/ADDITIONS/CHANGES

REMINDER THAT NO CHANGES CAN BE MADE WITHOUT PRIOR APPROVAL FROM THE ACC COMMITTEE! FORMS NEED TO BE FILLED OUT AND SUBMITTED FOR PRIOR APPROVAL. Roofing, painting, landscaping or any major changes must be approved by the Architectural Review Board. If you are not sure of the deed restrictions or what colors are allowable under the current deed restrictions, please contact SCS Management at 281-463-1777. Many homes are in desperate need of painting or mildew cleaning! Any modification of the front yard etc. that is out of the ordinary should be approved before landscaping with the Architectural Board Committee at SCS. Please trim ALL bushes, trees, shrubs that are planted in the cross corner lots / section of the street! These must be kept trimmed and maintained for good / safe view of incoming traffic at all times! SCS will be looking closely at all intersections during their drive through to insure that this is in compliance with the deed restrictions. There has been reported instances where palms, trees or large shrubbery is overgrown and not providing a safe view of the cross intersection. You may obtain your form for Architectural Board approval by visiting the Copperfield website at www.copperfield.org or contact SCS.

(CPV) TRASH & LIMBS

Wca’s contract has been awarded again and extended for another year. Curbside pickup will remain approximately at the same rate as last year. New pick up days will be posted by february 2013. Please do not put garbage out on the curb sooner than the evening before the scheduled pick up date. Trash limbs must be bundled and tied not to exceed 4 ft. lengths or the garbage people will not pick them up!

You may also use this means to ask questions, make suggestions or present complaints about the community. So far, this has been a really effective means of updating the village on things that will be taking place. It would be even better if there were more of the residents that could be contacted in this way. If you are not on the list and would like to be or have a neighbor who is not on the list, remember an email to easton.commons@yahoo.com will ensure that you are put on the list.

(EC) Crime Watch

We still need block captains. please contact Ken Johnson at admin@ eccrimewatch.com if you are interested.

(EC) Breakfast with Santa

If you would like to receive Crime Watch information, contact Ken at the email address shown above and he will provide information as it becomes available.

Breakfast with Santa will be Saturday, December 1, 2012 in the Pavilion in the small park where the pool is (as opposed to the larger Easton Commons Nature Park). Santa should be at the park at 10:00 A.M. There will be hot chocolate, doughnuts and reindeer food.

(EC) Change in Trash Service

There will be a change in Trash Service effective February 1, 2013. WCA will continue to serve the community. The pick-up days have changed. Pick-up will now be on Tuesdays and Fridays. Recycling will tentatively be on Fridays. Any changes in the recycling days will be reported to the residents as they become known. Easton Commons will continue to use the 18 gallon recycling bins that we currently use.

(EC) Email Listing

The Easton Commons Home Owners Association is putting together an email database of the residents in order to keep as many people informed of community happenings as possible. This list will be used strictly for the purpose of communicating with Easton Commons residents and will not be forwarded to a third party nor used for any other than the stated purpose.

(EC) Deed Restrictions

Every month SCS Management rides through Easton Commons to check for Deed Restriction violations. The Deed Restrictions set the standard on how our property is taken care of. A well maintained community will impact the property value of your home, which is most likely the largest investment you have. If you have received a letter from SCS regarding a Deed Restriction violation, please take care of the violation as soon as possible. If you are having problems getting an issue resolved, please contact SCS Management to inform them and to schedule a timeline for the correction. If you ignore the letter, additional letters are sent out which can result in additional expenses, which will be added to your account. If you are not sure of the Deed Restrictions, you can access them on www. copperfield.org under Easton Commons.

There are still incidences of large commercial trucks parking along the street near the entrance to the subdivision and adjacent to the park. The entrance to a residential neighborhood is no place for such vehicles, which are a safety problem, as well as unsightly and may interfere with traffic. Signs are posted that indicate that the parking of these vehicles is prohibited. When a truck parks in the restricted area, residents are encouraged to call the Harris County Sheriff’s Office non-emergency number (713-221-6000) to make a report.

Thanks to all the residents who participated for their cooperation in making this a quality event.

Beginning February 1st, Garbage pick-up days will change and recycling will be added to the service. The good news is that your garbage fees will decrease although recycling service is added. The new garbage collection days will be Tuesday for garbage and Friday for garbage and recycling. You will receive more information about this by mail in late January.

(NM) Christmas Decoration Contest

There were many festive and beautifully decorated homes last Christmas. Cash prizes were awarded to 1st through 3rd winners in the contest. It’s always a magical experience to find yourself on a street where families work together to have a group of decorated homes. Anyone interested in starting a tradition with your neighbors? The judging will take place on the evening of December 22nd. Don’t forget to leave your lights on this night.

(NM) Reminders

Garage Sales are not permitted in Copperfield Northmead. Two times a year, our community holds a neighborhood sale that is well publicized. Southdown Village ENJOY THE HOLIDAY SEASON

As the holiday season draws near, you’re sure to be busy making your list and checking it twice. Between balancing your budget with your family’s wish lists, battling the shopping malls for the best bargains, planning family gatherings, decking the halls, preparing holiday meals, gift wrapping and more, it’s easy to see how Christmas can come and go without the time to slow down, take a breath and enjoy the holiday season with your family. If you’re looking for ways to stop and smell the gingerbread this year, while creating some precious memories that can last a lifetime, here are a few simple and fun holiday activities that will ensure your entire family has a wonderful Holiday. “Remember that Carol” is a simple game that both kids and adults will enjoy as they go from person to person each taking turns announcing a Christmas carol or favorite Holiday song that they remember and singing a verse from it. A great game to entertain your children at home or to pass time on the road while traveling for the Holidays, it will have your family making beautiful music together in no time! Holiday Charades is fun for the whole family! Just have everyone write out 2 or 3 common holiday-themed items, characters or decorations, etc. on small pieces of paper. Fold them all up and place them in a bowl, then take turns drawing out one at a time and acting them out for all to guess. Holiday bedtime stories. Dedicate five minutes each night throughout the month of December to read your child or grandchild a bedtime holiday storybook. Let your little ones take turns picking out which book you will read each night. You can let your children choose one or two new Holiday books each year to add to their collection.

Make Christmas Eve all about family time. Turn off the TV and video games, turn on the Christmas tree lights and play an old-fashioned family game or just come together as a family to talk and enjoy each other’s company. Venturing out around Houston is also a very fun activity. Consider the following events: Dickinson Festival of Lights Your whole family will love this walk-thru festival of lights at Paul Hopkins Park in Dickinson, just outside Houston. This festival has been happening each year for over a decade and admission is free. For little ones, don’t miss the Cookie Hut where you can decorate a Christmas cookie for just a dollar. Kids can also get their pictures taken with Santa and ride the train. If you go to the festival during the week, park in the lot on the west side of the park. On the weekends, you can find free parking at True Cross Church School (300 FM 517 E.) and at Dickinson Plaza. A free shuttle to the festival is provided. Visit their website about specific dates and times. Phone: 281-337-2795 Address: 1000 A FM-517, Houston, TX 77539.

(SD) Crime Watch

Thieves are out in full force during the Holiday season. When shopping, put your purchases in the trunk and out of plain sight. If you purchase a big ticket item, please do not put the box out on the curb. Take the time to tear the box up so you can dispose of it properly and the thieves will not know you have a new 46-inch or a PlayStation. Keep in mind that our parks, both the pool park and the park on Sugar Ridge, are private property. These parks are for the use of Southdown residents and their guests only - not the general public. If you see people at the parks that you believe do not live in Southdown, please call Sheriff’s non-emergency number 713-221-6000 (option 1) and ask that they conduct a check of the park. You can make a non-contact call whereby you do not have to give your name or address. Working together, we can continue to keep Southdown Village safe. Register your name at www.copperfield.org/sl_register.php for updates on crime and community activities.

(SD) FROM THE BOARD

Southdown Board meetings are held on the third Wednesday of the month at 6:30 pm, in the Copperfield Community Center. Contact our management company to be placed on the agenda. Various committees overseeing different aspects of our community meet periodically. Please think of volunteering your time to make your community a better place. Volunteer opportunities are available with most committees, including the Pool and Parks, Architectural Review, Deed Restrictions and Crime Watch committees.

(SD) Southdown Amenities

Backdoor trash pick-up for household items on Monday and Thursday (heavy items) mornings. Grass clippings and yard waste must be placed at the curb. Please do not place your grass clipping at the curb before the night preceding pickup. It changes the perception of our neighborhood and is a common complaint of your neighbors. Recycling pick up is on Thursday mornings. We encourage you to reference the new guidelines at http://www.copperfield.org/southdown_village.php. Look for the Recycling Information section on the page.

(WC) DECEMBER GARDENING TIPS

LAWN/GARDEN CARE Fall is now trying to become winter, at least as close to a winter our area will see. The evenings (and days) have begun to get much cooler and most if not all of us welcome this change. • Brownpatch fungus will really start to take its toll if we fail to treat our lawns properly and scale back on the amount of water applied. Remember, when evening temperatures fall below 60 degrees, this problematic fungus will likely re-appear where you have had it before. The best strategy for limiting and controlling Brownpatch; o Change your watering schedule by eliminating all evening watering sessions. Leaving the lawn wet in the evening is an open invitation for Brownpatch to appear. o 1 or two daytime watering sessions per week should be sufficient for this time of year. o Continue to treat infected areas with the appropriate product to include Fertilome liquid systemic, Daconil or a double dose or Terrachlor. Any of these should help stop any apparent signs from growing or increasing. However, please - don’t wait until the situation is grim - treat before you see the telltale signs and avoid the breakout altogether! Remember - it is much easier to prevent Brownpatch than it is to eliminate it. • Please inspect your trees and shrubs that grow near or over the community sidewalks or green belt areas. Remember sidewalks need to remain free from low-hanging limbs or wide bushes that block or encroach upon safe, unobstructed passage. Having these hazards cleared and removed will prevent injury to children, your neighbors and even to your trees/shrubs, not to mention that trimming unchecked growth adds to the beauty of our neighborhood and your home. PLANT CARE Many of us have tropical plants that will require special attention in the cooler months if we wish to enjoy their presence come next spring and summer.

16

Don’t get caught off-guard in December if we experience any unusually cold nights by doing the following; • Covering your plants will help them survive a cold spell. Hibiscus, bougainvillea, mandevillea, crotons and philodendrons will not survive unprotected if the temperature falls below 32F. • When covering, use a sheet, a frost cover/blanket or a household blanket. If using plastic, cover the plant with a sheet/blanket FIRST, thereby placing the plastic OVER the sheet or blanket. DO NOT allow the plastic to directly come in contact with the plant/shrub. • Trim the plant down to a manageable size to allow ease in covering it. • Remember to water the root system heavily immediately before a cold snap occurs. • Be sure to protect the root system with mulch as this will insulate the roots, as well as better retain the water applied. • Uncover the plant the following day if the temperature rises above freezing, as sunlight will help warm the surface and maintain the health of the plant. • If portions of the plant were not covered and show signs of temperature damage, remove that portion of the plant before rotting occurs. • Remember a plant can sustain significant temperature damage, yet still be viable closer to its core and root ball. Pruning of dead stock as late as March can occur before all hope can be considered lost. • If we don’t see the coldest days/nights of the season in December, at least obtain the proper sheets/blankets necessary for when the cold times do arrive. • Weed Control - take great care in treating St. Augustine for cool weather weeds as some products (like Image) used to control broadleaf weeds can actually be quite harmful in the slow growth season now upon us. Utilize a product that has a combination of either 2-4D and Dicambra or 2-4D and Trimec. Read and follow the label directions carefully and use caution in applying weed control to your lawn in the cooler months. A small test patch may be wise if you have never used the product in the cooler months. If you are a do-it-yourself type, be thinking about the larger, labor-intensive projects like installing an irrigation control system, large area removal of turf

or plants or other lengthy projects as the cooler months are obviously more pleasant to perform this type of work under. Please enjoy the Holiday Season with joy - travel safe if planned and be thankful for all that you have. Remember kids will be out of school or home from college, so our streets and neighborhoods will be a bit more busy than usual. ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• End of Subdivision News •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••

In the contract signed with T-Mobile, T-Mobile has an option to renew their lease for up to 15 years. There is a clause that allows Cy-Fair to request a one-time relocation of a cell tower. We discussed the possibility of relocating the cell phone tower to a point at least 300 feet away from the school building and surrounding residential homes (the same distance required by City of Houston regulations). They felt that if they made this request to T-Mobile, that T-Mobile would just remove the tower rather than relocate it, which would result in the loss of revenue. They were not supportive of that idea (we will keep that option on the table). Another option that we discussed was to camouflage the tower. We presented several pictures in which the cell tower can be made to look like a tree, i.e. pine tree, palm tree, etc. They were very open to this idea. They plan on contacting T-Mobile to see what options they have and are willing to implement. Pictures of these camouflaged cell towers can be seen on our website.

The Foundation will kick off its fifth “Salute to Our Heroes” event on February 9, 2013 at the Omni Hotel Westside Houston. “Salute to Our Heroes” honors the brave men and women who have served to preserve our freedom and liberty. Proceeds from this event go to an endowment enabling graduating students from CFISD to attend college. The event will be generously underwritten by Earthcare Management and Kodiak Gas Services, as the Missing Man Underwriters. The Cypress Fairbanks Medical Center Hospital will be the Major General Sponsor.

This year our guest speaker is Steve Russell. LTC Steve Russell (Ret.) commanded the central unit responsible in the hunt and capture of Saddam

Hussein. Through leadership and joint efforts across multiple teams, a large organization worked effectively to capture one of the world’s most notorious criminals. Russell is an American Hero. His proven leadership and problemresolution techniques engage audiences through his storytelling.

Salute to Our Heroes has two purposes. First, to give tribute to our heroes soldiers serving now, veterans and those who have been wounded or killed in action. We want to honor those who have served their country.

The second purpose is to raise funds for scholarships for Cy-Fair ISD students. Each year we give three scholarships per Cy-Fair ISD high school, and the number of high schools is growing. It has been a challenge keeping up with the demand, but CFEF is dedicated to this mission.

The inaugural event honors Jersey Village High School graduate 1st Lt. Jeremy E. Ray, who was killed Dec. 20, 2007 while serving his country in Iraq. A CFEF endowment was established in Jeremy’s memory by an anonymous donor. Last year the 1st Lieutenant Jeremy Ray Community Service and Peace Award was presented to Klein Funeral Homes & Memorials.

Following tradition, the event will have the Missing Man Table & Honors Ceremony. The table will have empty table settings with chairs leaning up against the table as though saved for someone. The table settings have a single red rose displayed in a vase in reminder of the bloodshed for our country and the vase was tied with a red ribbon - a symbol of the continued pledge to shed blood for our country. A slice of lemon on the bread plate is a reminder of the bitterness of the loss of comrades in arms; a bowl of salt to symbolize the tears shed by family members of lost loved ones and glasses turned upside down indicate no one will sit there. Last year’s ceremony was performed by the 75th Army Division Honor Guard and was proceeded by Taps performed by William Veenstra, Cy-Fair High School Senior. For more information on the 2013 event please contact Marie Holmes at marie@thecfef.org or 281-807-3591.

The men’s lock in was equally a great bonding experience. Chips and queso disappeared like magic! Thanks to the parents that helped by sending in snack foods, treats and their warm personalities as chaperones for our young men and women. WE LOVE OUR PARENT VOLUNTEERS! Our students push themselves vocally by competing against the finest high school singers as they attempt to move towards the Texas State choir. At this point in time, we would like to recognize those members that have joined the Regional choir: Trevor Reagor, Grace Bracher, Diana Luu, Taylor Shaunfield and Scott Johnson. Making Regional and moving on to Pre Area auditions are: Katie Ferrigan, Abi Amadin, Marguerite Lavin, Sarah McIntyre, Elyse White, Tate Brown, Evan Moynihan, John Rooney, Tyler Denton, Brandon Zachary, Lauren Lafferty, Jordan Svehla, Venessa Clarke, Alicia McCormick, Thomas Kang and Ronald Pabello. WAY TO GO EAGLES!!! Outstanding job, congratulations! Our year will culminate in a vocal extravaganza for the holiday season. The holiday concert will be December 11th in the school auditorium. Traditional Christmas will be the theme of affair and our students look so wonderful in their gowns and tuxedos. This delight for the soul in sound is one concert you won’t want to miss. Mark your calendars now and plan to attend. We assure that you will return to the season uplifted with a song in your heart! Have a blessed season, enjoy those you love, treasure your moments and we will see you next year!

CYPRESS FALLS HIGH SCHOOL CHOIR

‘Tis the season for rejoicing in shining fashion! Our choir family had a wonderful opportunity to shine with its A Cappella choir on October 30th. Several choirs in the state of Texas were in attendance at Sam Houston State University in their Performing Arts Center for an imitational concert. Each choir had it’s own unique style and the evening was topped off by the college choirs delightful pieces. The solos and accompanists were an impressive touch and the crowd pleasing show closer was Queen’s “Somebody to Love.” It was an honor to be invited and we thank SHSU director Mr. Franklin for including our choir in this program.

“It’s a huge milestone,” Stephenson said. “I’m very proud that each one of those has been with Cy-Falls. I’m proud of the coaching staff and the student athletes who have come through the program throughout these last 20 years, as well as the Cy-Falls administration and parents. Everyone has been so supportive and instrumental in helping make this possible.” Following the victory, her team surprised her with a “500 Wins” t-shirt and banner and campus athletic coordinator Kirk Eaton presented Stephenson with a commemorative “500 Wins” volleyball that was signed by the players and marked with the date and score of the milestone-clinching game. Stephenson said she was aware of the approaching 500th victory, but had kept it a secret from the team until later in the season. “When the secret got out, the team really rallied around that and put a lot of pressure on themselves to make sure they were a part of it,” she said. “That last game was a do-or-die situation; if it didn’t happen then, it would have to be next year. They pressed hard in that game to make sure they got the win.” Stephenson began coaching in 1980 upon graduating from college. She said her career has been filled with memorable achievements, none greater

“That was a very special, driven and talented group and winning a state championship is pretty much the top moment in any coach’s career or life,” she said. “That’s the best memory of all amidst a lot of great memories. My players always ask, ‘Coach, how can you remember all these stories?’ and I say, ‘Because they’re great stories.’ This one (victory No. 500) was really cool, too.”

LANGHAM CREEK CHEERLEADERS ALWAYS ON THE GO

The annual Langham Creek Cheerleader Cheer Clinic held on October 27th was a huge success! Approximately 100 participants came to enjoy learning about the cheerleading talents our girls display everyday and to meet and get a picture with our outstanding Lobo mascot. The parents enjoyed the “show off” at the end of the clinic, as well as seeing the kids perform on the sidelines with the Lobo cheerleaders at the JV game on November 1st! Thank you to everyone who came to the clinic - it really is a fun event for all. The Lobo cheerleaders have been vigorously supporting the mighty Lobo football team all season. Even during a lengthy rain delay during the CyRidge game when they were given an option to leave, they chose to stay and help the Lobos fight on to a victory! That same enthusiastic support is being shared with the Lobo basketball teams. On November 8th, the cheerleaders kicked off their season by decorating the locker room with signs, streamers and balloons! Way to pump up our players for an exciting Lobo basketball season! Go Lobos!

“I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ? We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through December. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.

PACK 445 OUT OF FIEST ELEMENTARY

Welcome to this month’s fun loving episode of “The Chronicles of Pack 445!” We spent most of November getting ready for our District Pushmobile Race! In this event one Scout rides in a homemade car and steers while another Scout pushes him. They must maneuver their way through an obstacle course, switch drivers and pushers and get to the finish line before the other teams. While this is not Nascar, it is still very exciting to watch and play! December brings the Parade of Lights! Our pack has floats that are overflowing with Scouts and leaders ready to celebrate the holidays! The kids love decorating the trailers and trucks and waving to all the spectators on the streets! Our Scorpion Patrol and Stealth Patrols are preparing to cross over to Boy Scouts. We wish each of them luck and know they will have a great time with their new troops. The Pack will be taking a small break through he holidays but will be back stronger than ever in January! If you have a boy in the 1st-5th grade in the

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints new leadership

On October 28th, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints announced the appointment of a new ecclesiastical leader, David R. Lauck, who will serve as the president of the Cypress Texas Stake in Northwest Houston.

36

He succeeds Stirling D. Pack Jr., who successfully completed nine years of service. The Church is organized geographically into stakes, which are similar to a Catholic diocese. In his new assignment, President Lauck will preside over 12 congregations in Cypress, Waller, Fairfield, Bridgeland, Tomball and Northwest Houston. Stake presidents typically serve for approximately 9-10 years and come from a variety of backgrounds. President Lauck was raised in the Sugarland/ Missouri City area. He graduated from Brigham Young University with a bachelor’s degree in business. Currently he resides in Northwest Houston and is a business development manager with Shell Oil Company, where he has worked for over 21 years. The Church has no salaried ministry, so President Lauck will continue to work full time while fulfilling his new ecclesiastical responsibilities. He and his wife, Leanne, have been married for 23 years. Houston has been their home for 14 of those years. They have three children - one currently serving a two-year church mission in New York, one attending college and one a student in Cy-Fair I.S.D.

After a supporter asked a soldier what they needed, his response was as follows: “No requests, just don’t want to be forgotten.” -LCPL O.J.T. III

How would you feel if you saved a kid’s life? StandUp For Kids is an all volunteer organization dedicated to saving the lives of at-risk and homeless kids through volunteer outreach efforts. Our volunteers search the streets in order to find, stabilize and otherwise help homeless and street kids improve their lives. Every day throughout the US thirteen kids die on the streets from abuse, disease and suicide. According to recent statistics Houston has up to 2,500 kids living on the streets at any given time. Texas has the highest rate of homeless youth in the U.S.

When registering for Adopt A US Soldier your involvement can range from writing letters and sending postcards, to mailing care packages full of items a soldier may need or want. Handwritten letters are most important and meaningful to soldiers. Adopt A US Soldier encourages civilians to adopt a soldier to show your support for those that are making sacrifices for our country. If interested, please go to www.adoptaussoldier.org to register.

StandUp For Kids needs supplies for our Houston program, which provides food, clothing, counseling and a safe environment for the homeless youth of Houston. If you or your organization would like to hold a food or clothing drive for StandUp For Kids please contact me at HeatherE@standupforkids.org to learn more about StandUp For Kids or how you can help visit our website at www.standupforkids.org

Junior Achievement is a non-profit organization devoted to inspiring and preparing young students to succeed in a global economy. In partnership with businesses and educators, Junior Achievement brings the real world to schools, opening student minds to their true potential. Junior Achievement programs, taught by local business professionals, community volunteers and parents, build a bridge between school learning and young people’s future success in their work world and real lives by offering hands-on activities that further explore the topics of free enterprise, financial literacy and entrepreneurship.

The single greatest need, for homeless and street kids is our continuous caring and real support. We must convince them that we care, we want them back and we want to help them get off the streets.

CROSSROADS is a nonprofit United Way agency that provides mentors for at risk youth between the ages of 10 and 17. Visit our website at www. crossroads-volunteers.org and consider running an ad like the one below in your Copperfield subdivision newsletter. Mentoring makes a difference in both the life of the youth and our community. A commitment of 1 hour weekly is all we ask. Help us shape the leaders of tomorrow by contacting Jan, CROSSROADS Volunteer Recruiter at Jan.gibbs@hcjpd.hctx.net or 713-295-2779. Mentor one child… change two lives.

GIVE AN HOUR™ NETWORK Provides Free Counseling to Troops and Families

Since September 11, 2001, 1.8 million troops have been deployed in Afghanistan, Iraq and the Persian Gulf, with 17 percent of returning troops suffering traumatic brain injuries or post-traumatic stress disorder. Given the military culture’s emphasis on confidence, strength and bravery, many service members are reluctant to expose personal vulnerabilities to professional counselors. Give an Hour™ provides services that are separate from the military establishment, offering options to service members who might otherwise fail to seek or receive appropriate care. Give an Hour™ is a nonpartisan, nonprofit national network of mental health professionals providing free counseling services to returning troops and their families. Give an Hour™ offers services to veterans of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq and their family members. Family members are loosely defined to include married or unmarried partners, parents, siblings, aunts/ uncles—anyone connected to the veteran who is suffering a psychological effect related to the veteran’s service. Banyan Counseling Network has an office located near the North Cypress Medical Center and is trained to provide individual and family counseling. Family support groups are also currently forming. People interested in receiving services through Give an Hour™ are encouraged to call 281-855-1982 or log on to www.banyancounseling.com, (click Military Families link) or www.giveanhour. org to determine availability or to locate another provider in your area.
