• Watch for “sentry” birds and report sighting to your neighbors. Each species has a different breeding period. Be on the lookout for these birds beginning at the following time: February-Yellow Crowned Night Heron, March-Cattle Egret, Great Egret, Great Blue Heron, Little Blue Heron, Snowy Egret • Check daily for birds and nesting material in your trees. Begin scare tactics as soon as you see birds on or near your property. Use noisemakers, water spray or shine lights at night. Hang “scare eye” balloons or other moving objects in trees. Use long poles, tennis balls or water hoses to disturb early nesting material. • DO NOT HARM BIRDS OR EGGS. Migratory birds are protected by international treaty. Once birds begin sitting on nests, eggs are probably present. You cannot kill, harass, more or disturb the birds during nesting season.

(MG) HOLIDAY LIGHTING CONTEST WINNERS Thank you to all the residents who went the extra mile to make our neighborhood look so beautiful this holiday season! Here is a list of this year’s Holiday Lighting Contest Winners:

(MG) BIRD UPDATE

Once again this year the bird committee will be hard at work preventing the nesting of migratory birds! We urge all residents to do the same. Preventing Migratory Bird Nesting Homeowner Checklist • Remove any old, abandoned nests. • Trim your trees. Remove deadwood, thin tree canopy to allow sunlight between limbs and other trees. January - March • Familiarize yourself with “sentry” birds. They are the first to arrive, looking for good nesting places.

(MG) HOMEOWNERS ASSOCIATION MONTHLY BOARD MEETING

The next monthly homeowners association Board meetings will be held on Tuesday, February 2, 2016 and Tuesday, March 1st at 6 PM, at the Copperfield Community Center, 15409 Willow River Drive. Call SCS Management, 281-463-1777, to be placed on the agenda. All homeowners are welcome.

Northmead Village (NM) GARAGE SALE

Mark your calendars now and save the date! The Northmead Village Spring Community Garage Sale will be held on Saturday, April 2, 2016 from 7 AM until 3 PM.

(NM) EGRETS AND NIGHT HERONS ARE IN NORTHMEAD!

The Egrets and Night Herons nest were found in homes off Pearl Lake and Meadow Village. These homeowners can tell you about the noise and sinks they experienced for over 6 months. A few nests were also found around our pool and park area. Middlegate had the same problems at their pool park area for three years until their resistances band together and drove them away. The Egrets and Night Herons will be returning in February, as Northmead homeowners, we need to do the following to keep the birds out: • Trim your trees and remove dead wood. • Thin your tree canopy to allow sunlight between limbs and other trees. • Remove any old (inactive) nests in your trees. • HOA will take care of the two Northmead parks.

once they lay eggs. Preventing the birds from building nests on residential property or in our parks in the first place is key.

(NM) DEED RESTRICTIONS

While no one likes receiving a Deed Restriction notice, it’s a necessary evil to keep the neighbor in good repair, which protects everyone’s property values. If you receive a letter and have a question or need additional time to make a repair, please call Graham Management at 281-497-4320. We are here to help.

(NM) GARBAGE CANS

GARBAGE CANS MUST BE STORED OUT OF SIGHT! It is a violation of deed restrictions to leave cans in view on non-garbage pick-up days. There is a fine assessed for each violation notice a resident receives. This is a growing problem in our neighborhood. Deed Restriction investigators are going to become more vigilant in citing the homes in violation. You are encouraged to report homes that are chronic violators to Graham Management. A link to contact Graham Management is also on the Copperfield website. You will remain anonymous. Your reports are appreciated.

(NM) HOME IMPROVEMENT REQUIREMENTS

Before making improvements or changes that may be effected by our Deed Restrictions, call Graham Management at 281-497-4320. They will advise you and provide the form you will need for approval of your renovation. Please do not put yourself in the unfortunate position of incurring unnecessary costs to rectify a change that was not approved.

Prevention is crucial, egrets, herons and other migratory birds are protected by international treaty, it’s illegal for residents to harm or harass the birds

Sorry Westcreek Residents for not being able to post the winners of the 2015 Holiday Decorating Contest sooner than February, but here FINALLY are the winners of the 3 categories sponsored by the Landscape Committee: • Best Decorated House - 17318 Emerald Isle • Best Decorated Front Door - 17418 Emerald Isle • Best All-Around - 7903 Regal Spruce There were so many wonderful homes and yards decorated this season - our 1st year holding the event, it was difficult to choose only 1 winner for each category! Thank you to all those who participated and even to those that enjoyed to simply view what others provided. Our neighborhood was lit up nicely and was even more beautiful at night than during the daylight hours!

(WC) FEBRUARY GARDENING TIPS

REMINDER - If you still have not yet been able to remove any holiday decorations please remember to do so ASAP. Most of December was downright HOT and January cooled off and got closer to “normal” with some nice afternoons when the rain stayed away, but February will likely bring us cold nights like we saw in early January. Continue to be prepared to cover any tropicals or temperature-sensitive plants as we potentially will see some evenings that will hover at or below freezing. March will usually bring warmer nights, so be diligent for one more month and protect your tropical plants! PRUNING SEASON! February is when pruning should begin to take place for hardwood trees, roses and crape myrtles. Following the best approach to cutting and balance will provide the best results. Identify any limbs that might be a hazard to someone underneath it or to a building or structure nearby. Broken branches, weak branches, narrow growth angles and other “odd” growth faults should be identified. Any dead or dying growth should be removed, as well as any limbs that cross over or rub against each other, as this can cause disease/damage to the tree/bush as well as prevent light to filter down into the lower limb areas. Removing such growth will also encourage fruit production in fruit trees and promote ripening during production seasons. Follow the three-cut method on all large limbs. If a single cut is made the weight of the limb will pull the limb down and damage the trunk or adjacent limb areas before the cut has been completed, which will injure the tree and cause unsightly wounds. Make sure any cuts are done above the flush level with the trunk or adjoining limb. Do not make any stub cuts.

Be sure to not remove lower branches on newly planted trees. Wait until the tree has matured for at least 2-4 years before lower limbs are removed. Crape Myrtles should be pruned back to at the very least remove dead seed pods, otherwise new blooms will struggle to become established. Keep in mind that crape myrtles produce blooms from “new wood” or new branch growth, so some pruning is required annually to achieve flowering. You may choose to select a certain height and then cut all upward limbs to not exceed that height - a “V” pattern or you may prefer to allow the tree to maintain a natural height and shape, which is somewhat more challenging to do. Either method is acceptable, but realize that allowing for a natural shape will likely allow for more blooms to occur. Remove all “suckers” or shoots of new growth from the base of the plant now, as well as during the warmer growth season. Suckers draw nutrients away from other plant areas and cause unsightly growth that will create an odd, unstable shape for the tree/bush. Further trim any removed growth to lengths no greater than 32” and bundle with twine or straps if you plan on disposing via curbside disposal service, otherwise it will not be picked up. If you did not yet get a chance to clean out your gutters this past fall, combining this chore with any tree pruning would be ideal.

(WC) BACKYARD GARDEN CLUB

We have started a Backyard Garden Club and the following is what it is all about. Ultimate Goal: • Visit other backyards and/or patios • Informal gathering • Share plants, cuttings or identification of plants • Share gardening tips • Possibly meet once a month and also schedule yard visits - tentatively meet the 2nd Friday of the month at 2 PM • We will schedule 3 yards to visit at that meeting and visit the yards the following week at 6 PM • We will meet at house #1 then give addresses of others at that point This is a learning experience and not a back-yard contest. We just want to view and share our hidden landscaped Backyards. For more info, contact Bill Schindler at wrspo@sbcglobal.net. In Westcreek Village but open to all Villages.

LAWN & GARDEN CARE With the abundance of rain we have been blessed with this winter weeds in your lawn and garden areas are undoubtedly an issue. Be sure to apply a post-emergent broadleaf product such as Fertilome Weed-Free Zone or Bonide Weed Beater Ultra to keep weeds under control and allow you lawn the ability to emerge in the spring without competing for water and nutrients with nearby weeds. Prepare now to begin springtime lawn feeding in early March by ensuring the topsoil is adequate and stable. If your lawn is uneven or requires topsoil dressing to further feed the root base and allow for better moisture retention/ drainage, February is the ideal time to address this, before any new growth begins to emerge. If flowers like Bluebonnets or Indian Paint Brush are introduced into your garden or planter box areas from seedlings, establishing them by late February or early March will be best to produce ideal blooms.

“I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ?

We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through February. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.

832-298-3113 our Council programs and help to support our great camps we appreciate the support of our families, friends and neighbors! Girl Scouts involved in the annual Cookie Sale are also learning important skills that will last a lifetime, such as goal setting, decision making, money management, people skills and business ethics.

Girls and troops in the Cadette through Ambassador Girl Scout levels are invited to join the Cy-Fair Region 4 Facebook group. Opportunities for local special events and trainings for our older girl members will be available there. Girl Scouts builds girls of courage, confidence and character, who make the world a better place.

Our World Thinking Day event in February is going to have booths representing many different countries. So far, we have Vietnam, Madagascar, Puerto Rico, Japan, Finland, Germany, Ireland, France, China, Egypt and Canada signed up. World Thinking Day reminds us that Scouting is an international organization and helps us learn about our sister Scouts and Guides in other countries.

Girl Scouting is open to all girls ages 5 (must be in kindergarten) through 18, who are willing to accept the Girl Scout Promise and Law. Girls may join at any level and no previous Scouting experience is required. Copper Creek Meadows serves girls in the residence areas for the following elementary schools, as well as the corresponding middle and high schools. Home schoolers and private school students are always welcome. Our elementary schools are: Birkes, Fiest, Hairgrove, Horne, Kirk, Lee, Lieder, Lowery, Metcalf, Owens, Tipps, Wilson, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, Texas Christian School and Christian Life Center. For more information, please contact Marlo Folwell at 713-854-9426 (marlo.folwell@c-a-m,com). You may also contact Girl Scouts of San Jacinto Council at 713-292-0300 (www.gssjc.org).

We will be returning to Wimberley for a Leader/Daughter event in April and expect to enjoy horseback riding and rock climbing in addition to playing and kayaking in the river. The Talent show and Dutch Oven Cook-off are traditions at this event, but they are new and different every year! This is always a special opportunity for leaders to spend time with their OWN daughters. Did you know that there are two Little Free Libraries locally that were made by Girl Scouts? One is on the porch of the Copperfield Community Center (15409 Willow River Drive) and the other is inside the Langham Creek YMCA (16725 Longenbaugh). Troop 113035’s book collection drive for Lowery amassed over 600 books (their goal was 400!), so they are planning to donate some books to these libraries and they also filled up a Little Free Library next to the Lowery Elementary School. Daisy troop 113042 put together some “survival” bags, including different kinds of candy, for the CY-Fair ISD police dept. They visited the department in November and created a beautiful “thank you” sign for the department. Junior troop 16468 has been a very busy group of girls! They worked on the Junior First Aid badge at several troop meetings. Among other things, they learned basic CPR skills using dummies and learned what to put in first aid kits, as well as how to use them. They also worked on their “Business Owner “badge and had a special guest speaker from the community. Their “Take Action” project has been to make pillowcases for children with sleeping disorders at Texas Children’s Hospital. They used the sewing skills they learned earlier this year to make the pillow cases. Troop 16468 also partnered with Troop 113017 in sorting, categorizing and wrapping holiday gifts for the less fortunate families in our community. They also had fun making gingerbread houses at their winter holiday party!

BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA COPPERHEAD DISTRICT

For 100 years, Scouting programs have instilled in youth the values found in the Scout Oath and Scout Law. Today, these values are just as relevant in helping youth grow to their full potential as they were in 1910. Scouting helps youth develop academic skills, self-confidence, ethics, leadership skills, outdoor skills and citizenship skills that influence their adult lives. The Boy Scouts of America provides youth with programs and activities that allow them to: • Try new things. • Provide service to others. • Build self-confidence. • Reinforce ethical standards. Scouting provides youth with a sense that they are important as individuals while promoting activities that lead to personal responsibility and high selfesteem. As a result, when hard decisions have to be made, peer pressure can be resisted and the right choices can be made. Scouting provides a rewarding experience for boys ages 5 to 21. Scouting through the local Packs and Troops teach outdoor and life skills which help

Scouting Joke for February A Scout Master was teaching his Cub Scouts about survival in the desert. “What are the three most important things you should bring with you in case you get lost in the desert?” he asked. Several hands went up and many important things were suggested such as food, matches, etc. Then one little boy in the back eagerly raised his hand. “Yes, Timmy, what are the three most important things you would bring with you?” asked the Scout Master. Timmy replied, “A compass, a canteen of water and a deck of cards.”

ST. CUTHBERT EPISCOPAL CHURCH

St. Cuthbert is located at 17020 West Road, Houston (the northeast corner of West and Queenston). For more information on any of our events, visit us at www.stcuthbert.org. You are invited to St. Cuthbert Episcopal Church’s Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper on February 9th from 5:30-7 PM. We will eat pancakes and play bingo! Shrove Tuesday originated during the Middle Ages. Food items like meats, fats, eggs, milk and fish were regarded as restricted during Lent. To keep such food from being wasted, many families would have big feasts on Shrove Tuesday. The English tradition of eating pancakes on Shrove Tuesday came about as a way to use as much milk, fats and eggs as possible before Ash Wednesday began. In France, the consumption of all fats and fatty foods on this day coined the name “Fat Tuesday” or Mardi Gras. Sharing Our Story Lenten Program - All are invited to St. Cuthbert Episcopal Church’s Lenten program, Sharing Our Story. The program will be offered for four Wednesdays in Lent, beginning February 17th through March 9th from 6:30-7:30 PM. We will hear a testimony from a speaker who will share with us their story. We will conclude with Holy Communion and healing prayers. The Youth (sixth-twelfth grade) will take a look at wilderness and how it relates to their lives and Children (kindergarten-fifth grade) will explore the events of Holy Week. The nursery will be open. Please join us for this impactful, spiritually-based Lenten program.

Join Joy and the four other emotions running the Headquarters of 11-year-old Riley’s mind, as she strives to make sure Riley stays happy. Cornerstone United Methodist Church has partnered with Fiest Elementary School to provide assistance to disadvantaged students attending this elementary school located. More than 50% of the students attending the school are classified as “below the poverty level.” In order to assure that these students have the school supplies they need, the “Friends of Fiest” at Cornerstone have established a “Cornerstone Closet for Fiest.” This is an ongoing project whereby a stockpile of supplies is maintained so that when students deplete their initial supply and families cannot afford to replenish their needs, teachers can draw from the stockpile in the “Closet” to provide needed items. Currently the most needed items are composition books, pencils, glue sticks and facial tissue. Contributions can be dropped off in the church office or placed in the “Closet for Fiest” bend in the lobby of the worship center. All contributions are welcomed. Dave Ramsey is a personal money management expert. Ramsey knows firsthand what financial peace means in his own life-living a true rags-to-riches, back-to-rags, back-to-riches story. Financial Peace University is a tool that supports churches by equipping them with a biblically-based accountability class that will train the congregation and community to manage their resources. Now Ramsey has come up with a practical tool to help parents teach their children to develop a healthy and responsible understanding of how money works entitled “Smart Money, Smart Kids.” Cornerstone United Methodist Church will offer this six-week course equipping parents to raise money-smart kids on Thursday nights at 7 PM from February 4th through March 10th. FOSTER CHILDREN: PREPARATION FOR ADULT LIVING (PAL)

When foster children reach age 18, they are considered independent. That’s difficult for kids who have been wards of the state, with necessities arranged by caseworkers with state funds. Now they’ll have to figure out how to organize themselves and make their money last a whole month. Fortunately, Child protective Services offers them a program to help prepare for independence: Preparation for Adult Living (PAL). The year-long course culminates in an all-day workshop hosted by the National Council for Jewish Women (NCJW). The course is held at Junior Achievement’s BizTown, using computer kiosks sponsored by local businesses. Want to help with PAL or other NCJW programs that help change lives with hands-on community service? Contact info@ncjwhouston.org or see www. ncjwhouston.org.
