Northmead Village
Once again this year the bird committee will be hard at work preventing the nesting of migratory birds! We urge all residents to do the same. Preventing Migratory Bird Nesting Homeowner Checklist • Remove any old, abandoned nests. • Trim your trees. Remove deadwood, thin tree canopy to allow sunlight between limbs and other trees. January - March • Familiarize yourself with “sentry” birds. They are the first to arrive, looking for good nesting places. • Watch for “sentry” birds and report sighting to your neighbors. Each species has a different breeding period. Be on the lookout for these birds beginning at the following time: February-Yellow Crowned Night Heron, March-Cattle Egret, Great Egret, Great Blue Heron, Little Blue Heron, Snowy Egret • Check daily for birds and nesting material in your trees. Begin scare tactics as soon as you see birds on or near your property. Use noisemakers, water spray or shine lights at night. Hang “scare eye” balloons or other moving objects in trees. Use long poles, tennis balls or water hoses to disturb early nesting material. • DO NOT HARM BIRDS OR EGGS. Migratory birds are protected by international treaty. Once birds begin sitting on nests, eggs are probably present. You cannot kill, harass, more or disturb the birds during nesting season.

(NM) EGRETS AND NIGHT HERONS ARE IN NORTHMEAD!
The Egrets and Night Herons have crossed West Road and built nests in homes off Meadow Village Drive and Pearl Lake. They were at the Middlegate pool park for the last three years, until their residence drove them away. The Northmead residence need to ban together to keep them out of our neighborhood next year, like Middlegate did in 2015. The birds will be leaving shortly and will be gone between October and early February, as homeowners we need to do the following: • Trim your trees and remove dead wood. • Thin your tree canopy to allow sunlight between limbs and other trees. • Remove any old (inactive) nests in your trees. • HOA will take care of the two Northmead parks. Prevention is crucial, egrets, herons and other migratory birds are protected by international treaty, it’s illegal for residents to harm or harass the birds once they lay eggs. Preventing the birds from building nests on residential property or in our parks in the first place is key.

(NM) DEED RESTRICTIONS
While no one likes receiving a Deed Restriction notice, it’s a necessary evil to keep the neighbor in good repair, which protects everyone’s property values. If you receive a letter and have a question or need additional time to make a repair, please call Graham Management at 281-497-4320. We are here to help.
(NM) GARBAGE CANS
GARBAGE CANS MUST BE STORED OUT OF SIGHT! It is a violation of deed restrictions to leave cans in view on non-garbage pick-up days. There is a fine assessed for each violation notice a resident receives. This is a growing problem in our neighborhood. Deed Restriction investigators are going to become more vigilant in citing the homes in violation. You are encouraged to report homes that are chronic violators to Graham Management. A link to contact Graham Management is also on the Copperfield website. You will remain anonymous. Your reports are appreciated.
(NM) HOME IMPROVEMENT REQUIREMENTS
Before making improvements or changes that may be effected by our Deed Restrictions, call Graham Management at 281-497-4320. They will advise you and provide the form you will need for approval of your renovation. Our major projects included a total pool and pool area overhaul at Autumn Laurel Park. (SC) CHRISTMAS DECORATING CONTEST
Results of the Christmas Decorating Contest will be published in the February 2016 edition.
(SC) YEARLY ASSESSMENT
The annual HOA dues have been raised this year roughly 5% due to inflation. A little over 2.5% of that came from the Copperfield Community Association (CCA). The CCA is the umbrella association over the seven villages of Copperfield. Their responsibilities include Sheriff’s contract, trash contract, the Community Center, the main Copperfield park with the two baseball fields and all common areas that lay on the outskirts of all the seven villages.
January 2016

With tight reigns on our budget and a fiscally conservative Board, we have been able to keep the annual dues unchanged for several years. The Board will strive to once again not have to raise the annual assessment for another period of time.

(SC) REPORTING ANY SUSPICIOUS ACTIVITY
There are two ways to report suspicious activity. You can use the iWatch Harris County App. You can also call the Sheriff’s Department non-emergency number, 713-221-6000. iWATCH HARRIS COUNTY is a smart phone app designed to work with Android and iPhones. It allows citizens to report any persons or activities. Any tips can remain anonymous or citizens have the option to disclose their identity. Additional information is available at iwatchharriscounty.com.
(SC) PARKS CLOSE AT SUNSET EACH DAY
The Parks in our neighborhood close at dark. The Sheriff Department has requested that anyone who sees activity in one of our parks after dark, should report the activity to the Sheriff’s Department. Please call 713-2216000 and once the recording starts, press “1.” Inform “dispatch” that you are reporting a suspicious person or suspicious activity in the Southcreek Village Park. You may request that the officer stop by your residence after the incident has been checked out, by letting the dispatch officer know this when you report the incident.
(SC) STREETLIGHTS OUT?
(SC) TEENS - OPPORTUNITY FOR VOLUNTEER HOURS?
Please report outages of streetlights to Centerpoint Energy. Get the pole number, as well as the nearest Street address and call 713-207-2222.
We are in need of volunteers to keep our marquees updated with information. This would entail changing the letters on both sides of the marquees located in our parks. If you are in need for volunteer service hours, this is an easy way to fill your requirements. If interested, please contact Dennis Zehler at Dennis.Southcreek@gmail.com.
Southcreek trash pickup is on Tuesdays and Fridays. Southcreek has backdoor pickup. This means that our trashcans may be placed at the back of our driveway. We do not have to have our trashcans at the curb. Big items such as yard clippings and tree branches should be placed at the curb.

WESTCREEK CRIME WATCH COMMITTEE Meetings - 3rd Monday at 6 PM Forest Heights Pool Meeting Room
(WC) NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS
The Westcreek Crime Watch Committee wishes all our neighbors a happy new year. We do ask that everyone add the following to your list of 2016 resolutions to make this the best year possible for our community: • Be extra vigilant throughout the year but especially in January because trends indicate a rise in crime during this month. • Keep doors, windows, garages and vehicles locked at all times. • Do not leave valuables - purses, cell phones, briefcases, computers, navigation devices - in vehicles. • Park vehicles in garage or driveway, not on the street, to help with traffic flow and to keep our kids safe. • Record the serial numbers on electronics, bikes, lawn equipment & tools. Etch name and address on items targeted by thieves. Take photos of these items and jewelry. This can help with the recovery of stolen items brought to pawn shops. • When you see something suspicious, say something. Report all suspicious activities and vehicles. When possible, write down license plate numbers. Program the non-emergency Sheriff Dept. number 713-221-6000 #1 in the cell phones of all family members. • Remember to keep your vehicle speed within the speed limit and to always come to a complete stop at stop signs. There is a zero tolerance policy for those who do not follow the traffic laws. • Please consider joining our committee which meets once a month for approximately an hour to discuss various ways to make our neighborhood a safe place to live. Anyone interested in signing up to be a block captain notify Larry Berger at Larry.Berger@energytransfer.com for details.

If you are interested in helping make a difference in our neighborhood and would like to become part of the group, we welcome and encourage your attendance and hope to see you there - there is room for you! Comments, suggestions or questions regarding common areas or other landscape topics are always welcome. Please contact Graham Management Inc. at 281-497-4320 - they will forward your message, request or information to the committee. A member will then get back with you to answer your questions or concerns.
(WC) HOLIDAY DECORATIONS
Thanks to everyone that decorated their home and yards for the holiday ☺ - there were several awesome and beautiful homes decorated throughout Westcreek! The winners of the contest unfortunately were not available before the newsletter submission deadline, so the winners will not appear in print until the February edition is released - sorry. Also, please remember to take down and store your outdoor holiday lighting and decorations by the 15th of this month. Welcome to 2016! If you haven’t started a feeding calendar or outdoor care schedule or have not transferred previous schedules to this years’ calendar then now would be a good time to do so. A great lawn and garden fertilization schedule (either conventional or organic) can be obtained online at www.ktrh.com/articles/gardenline-fertilizer-schedule-478564. This can be used as a basis to then add garden feedings as well as planting events or even vegetable harvests that you can then record/track and ensure timely completion of. ☺

(WC) LAWN/GARDEN CARE
Reminder, cold nights will surely be upon us in January - so please be prepared! If you have tropical plants or specimens that are sensitive to temperatures near or below freezing, they will require special attention if you intend to enjoy their presence come next spring and summer. • Obtain or create frost covers or sheets (made of fabric, NOT plastic). • Have the covers readily available to avoid delays if coverage is needed. The very cold weather usually roars in with little warning. • Be sure the root ball area of all plants is thoroughly protected with mulch. • Water plants thoroughly the night prior of cold weather, the moisture actually protects the roots. • Avoid anti-siphon valve damage! If you can, it pays to turn off the water supply to your irrigation system when sub-freezing temperatures threaten without having to interrupt supply to your entire home. Adequate irrigation this time of year can usually be performed manually only once maybe twice weekly.
CLEAN-UP/PRUNING
• The ideal time to begin shrub/bush pruning is in late February. Early to mid-February for Crape Myrtles, White Oaks and Azaleas is the ideal time. Heavy pruning on Roses is also best next month, not in January. • Still excited about pruning now? Dead ground cover like Lantana if not already pruned back can be pruned all the way to its base now as its root ball is still alive and will not be spurred into new growth until mid-spring. Dead flowers in bedding areas must be removed now if not already. • Heavy tree trimming of Live Oaks, Pear or Elm trees should be performed NOW, before mid-March, after the threat of freeze has left the area for the season. • DO NOT “TOP” cut the tree! • Remember that if you know a large tree is dead due to disease or age and will NOT be coming back come springtime, immediate removal is recommended, regardless of the time of year. • Replacing mulch now may be tempting now but be patient - the beautiful, but often messy, Live Oaks will still be dropping leaves until mid-March and may cause constant leaf removal.
January 2016
Copperfield
COOL WEATHER PLANTING AND WORK • Enrich soil in bedding areas now where new plants will be placed come spring, before the plants and mulch are laid down in these areas. • The cooler months are perfect for planting herbs that are best suited for cooler months. Ideal herbs include Cilantro, Rosemary, French Sorrel, all parsleys, Creeping winter savory or Chervil. Basil will NOT do well at all in these cooler months! • Cyclamen are great-looking flowers that do really well in the colder months and can be found now until early February. These flowers even do well in hot spring months in shaded areas, as long as they are adequately watered. Pansies may also do well as long as they are covered during a freeze. • Quince (chaenomeles) are a hedge-type bush that provide beautiful flowers, although they are like roses and come with thorns, so beware! Calendula, Candytuft (iberis), English daisy (Bellis perennis), Heath (don’t over-water these!) ornamental Kale, Snapdragons, Stock and Viola are wonderful for the bedding and garden areas and all do well in the cooler months. • Heavy landscape work such as tree removal, lawn leveling, irrigation installation or excavation work should be performed now before it gets hot again.
We have started a Backyard Garden Club and the following is what it is all about. Ultimate Goal: • Visit other backyards and/or patios • Informal gathering • Share plants, cuttings or identification of plants • Share gardening tips • Possibly meet once a month and also schedule yard visits - tentatively meet the 2nd Friday of the month at 2 PM • We will schedule 3 yards to visit at that meeting and visit the yards the following week at 6 PM • We will meet at house #1 then give addresses of others at that point This is a learning experience and not a back-yard contest. We just want to view and share our hidden landscaped Backyards. For more info, contact Bill Schindler at wrspo@sbcglobal.net. National Archery Champion visits Covenant Academy. Seventh grade students recently learned how to shoot arrows like a master archer… or rather a High Elf of Lothlorien. Having recently finished reading J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Fellowship of the Ring,” the students celebrated their accomplishment with a feast in CA’s wooded Preserve. Much like the Fellowship prepared to feast with the elves as a farewell to Lorien, CA’s fellowship of learners paused to celebrate their journey together as they look forward to reading the next great book. Because the elves are great archers, Covenant Academy invited James Loesch, winner of 14 national titles, to attend as master instructor and honorary Elf. Loesch and Houston Archery Lessons gave each student a lesson in how to shoot. Students also dressed in costume and shared a meal.

Copper Creek Meadows Community held a “Cookie Kickoff” for the Annual Girl Scout Cookie Sale. We celebrated the 10th anniversary of the “Lemonade” cookie and enjoyed “frosted lemonade.” We also learned fun facts about Girl Scout cookies, played games and did other activities to help develop skills such as goal planning and financial responsibility. The annual Girl Scout Cookie Sale began on Dec. 19th and continues through March. Sales of Girl Scout Cookies provide funds for individual troop activities and help to support our Council camps and a variety of programs. Proceeds from the Cookie sale help to feed and shoe the horses, maintain the sailboats and canoes and buy archery equipment. We greatly appreciate the support of our friends and neighbors! Thank you!

Information on Council Day and resident camps has been sent to registered girls, but you can also check on the Council website, www.gssjc.org. Troop 113017 celebrated the birthday of Juliette Gordon Low, our Founder, with a pajama party on Oct 31st. The pink hats and a variety of masks added to the fun. Troop 113035 participated in a painting badge workshop at Rice University. The workshop finished with a birthday celebration and cake for Juliette! Our Leader/Daughter holiday craft event was a lot of fun for those who attended. Thanks to all who assisted with the event! Our Spring Leader/Daughter event is coming up in April. This is always a popular event, with camping, shopping and all kinds of activities. In the past, activities have included riding, rock climbing, talent show and Dutch Oven Cook-off. Can’t wait to find out what is on the schedule this year. Our World Thinking Day event is coming up in February, when we celebrate our membership in the international Scouting movement and learn about other countries. Last year, we had some very creative booths, decorations and swaps and we can’t wait to see what our troops will be doing this year! Second year Brownie Troop 16150 volunteered to decorate a float for the Great Pyrenees Rescue Group at the Brenham Christmas parade. The girls also made jingle sticks and walked with the group in the parade. These busy Brownies also joined with other Copper Creek Meadows troops who made cards, letters and drawings for soldiers serving in Afghanistan. Troops from our community also joined in creating ornaments for the Girl Scout Christmas tree at the Museum of Natural Science. This year’s theme was “Back to Nature.” Girl Scouting is open to all girls ages 5 (must be in kindergarten) through 18, who are willing to accept the Girl Scout Promise and Law. Girls may join at any age and no previous Scouting experience is required. Older girls whose

Make discoveries. Think independently. Discover a unique way to learn. There is nothing quite like the authentic Montessori Method for early education—and nothing quite like the results it yields. The school’s goal is to empower children to think for themselves and to develop their unique mind. Here, self-direction and selfdiscipline lead to self-discovery, as the personal interests of each child are embraced, celebrated, and nurtured. Their exceptional teachers are all Montessori-certified, gaining the skills to enhance each child’s independence, inspiration, and intelligence.
When children are divided into classrooms, it is by age range, not by grade, so older children share their knowledge and inspire younger children about learning. This arrangement helps build social skills and encourages collaborative work. Further, the school has been designed to stimulate each child’s curiosity while providing creative, tactile experiences in three areas: Practical Life (basic movements, fine motor skills, concentration), Sensorial (refinement of all senses, such as visual, tactile, and auditory), and Academic (components of learning including language, math, and science).
The school is now enrolling for winter and offering new families $100 off tuition.*

BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA COPPERHEAD DISTRICT
For 100 years, Scouting programs have instilled in youth the values found in the Scout Oath and Scout Law. Today, these values are just as relevant in helping youth grow to their full potential as they were in 1910. Scouting helps youth develop academic skills, self-confidence, ethics, leadership skills, outdoor skills and citizenship skills that influence their adult lives. The Boy Scouts of America provides youth with programs and activities that allow them to: • Try new things. • Provide service to others. • Build self-confidence. • Reinforce ethical standards. Scouting provides youth with a sense that they are important as individuals while promoting activities that lead to personal responsibility and high selfesteem. As a result, when hard decisions have to be made, peer pressure can be resisted and the right choices can be made. Scouting provides a rewarding experience for boys ages 5 to 21. Scouting through the local Packs and Troops teach outdoor and life skills which help our youth Be Prepared. Your area is serviced by the BSA Sam Houston Area Counsel - Copperhead District which includes 23 Cub Scout Packs (boys 5 to 10 years old), 13 Troops (boys from 11 to 18 years old) and 10 Venturing units (boys and girls from 14 to 21). Our Units typically meet weekly.

ST. CUTHBERT EPISCOPAL CHURCH
St. Cuthbert is located at 17020 West Road, Houston (the northeast corner of West and Queenston). For more information on any of our events, visit us at www.stcuthbert.org. St. Cuthbert Episcopal Church will hold their 15th annual Chili Cook-Off and Chili Bowl on Saturday, January 30th, from 12-2 PM. This event is open to the public. Come and sample our chilies and place your vote for your favorite and see if it becomes the grand prize winner. Then join the team for a fun game of football right on our front lawn. You are invited to St. Cuthbert Episcopal Church’s Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper on February 9th from 5:30-7 PM. We will eat pancakes and play bingo! Shrove Tuesday originated during the Middle Ages. Food items like meats, fats, eggs, milk and fish were regarded as restricted during Lent. To keep such food from being wasted, many families would have big feasts on Shrove Tuesday. The English tradition of eating pancakes on Shrove Tuesday came about as a way to use as much milk, fats and eggs as possible before Ash Wednesday began. In France, the consumption of all fats and fatty foods on this day coined the name “Fat Tuesday” or Mardi Gras. You are invited to the Ash Wednesday services at St. Cuthbert Episcopal Church on February 10th at 6:30 AM, 4:30 PM and 7 PM. All services have Holy Communion and the imposition of ashes. The 4:30 PM service is designed for children and their families. Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the season of Lent, which is dedicated to reflection, prayer and fasting in preparation for Easter.

“I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ?
We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through January. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.

FOSTER CHILDREN: PREPARATION FOR ADULT LIVING (PAL)
When foster children reach age 18, they are considered independent. That’s difficult for kids who have been wards of the state, with necessities arranged by caseworkers with state funds. Now they’ll have to figure out how to organize themselves and make their money last a whole month. Fortunately, Child protective Services offers them a program to help prepare for independence: Preparation for Adult Living (PAL). The year-long course culminates in an all-day workshop hosted by the National Council for Jewish Women (NCJW). The course is held at Junior Achievement’s BizTown, using computer kiosks sponsored by local businesses. Want to help with PAL or other NCJW programs that help change lives with hands-on community service? Contact info@ncjwhouston.org or see www. ncjwhouston.org.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR DREAM DACHSHUND RESCUE
DREAM Dachshund Rescue, Education & Adoption Mission is a Houstonbased 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to rescuing abandoned Dachshunds and finding new homes for Dachshunds whose owners can no longer care for them. Our committed volunteers, working closely with local veterinarians, provide our Dachshunds with quality medical care and loving foster homes until they are adopted into carefully screened, forever homes. DREAM is currently looking for caring volunteers to provide temporary foster care for our many rescued Dachshunds-in-need, currently awaiting adoption. Food, water, shelter and a soft place to rest is all you need to provide. The “love” just comes naturally. If you have a little room in your heart and in your home (and your family pets are up-to-date on their vaccines and monthly heart worm preventative), then you are who we are looking for! There is no feeling in the world like the unconditional love you’ll receive from a rescued Dachshund, plus the friendships you’ll make when you join the DREAM Team! The more foster homes we have, the more Dachshunds we can save. Please help save a life and consider fostering today!
