COPPERFIELD PLACE VILLAGE (CPV) A WORD FROM THE BOARD

The Annual Board Meeting was held on May 21st and the current President was re-elected unanimously for another term by the homeowners. There

First I want to thank all the homeowners who sent in their proxies and those who took their time to attend the meeting. We were able to meet our quorum requirement to conduct our meeting. I must stress that there were some proxies that were picked up in the neighborhood by some of the homeowners thus making it possible to meet our quorum. We were very close not to achieving our quorum requirement. I believe that part of this was due to sending proxies out too early OR people either forgot or lost them. I hope this is the case and not that the homeowners lacked interest in participation or doesn’t care what goes on in their community. It is imperative that you at least attend the annual meeting to realize how your Board is representing you and for you to be abreast of your own interests! The Board is elected by the homeowners and they volunteer their time and services to help and assist in every possible way towards your investment and community. You need to attend meetings so that you can learn and understand what the board can or cannot do on certain issues. Many think that the Board has the “run of the mill” on how they can pursue issues, complaints, violations or operate as a whole. THEY DO NOT. There are legalities, rules and regulations set forth by the State of Texas and Harris County, which the Board or the management company has no control over. This is why we have lawyers and SCS Management. They are there to assist the Board on all issues and are hired by CPV to see that we carry out our duties legally and help manage our Village.

“I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ? We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through July. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.

We would like to remind residents that your cats and dogs are subject neighbors, it is very important that pets are not allowed outside of the home without a restraint of some sort. In part, the ordinance reads as follows: SECTION 4. RESTRAINT AND IMPOUNDMENT areas of Harris County, Texas. The custodian of a dog or cat is not authorized to have, harbor or keep any unlicensed dog or cat or to allow any dog or cat to become a stray. 2. The custodian of every dog or cat is responsible for any behavior of a dog or cat under the provisions of these Regulations. You can read more about this and other important animal related laws at www.hcphes.org (Harris County Health and Environmental Services).

(MG) PARKING

Debbie K

We would also ask that residents, whenever possible, park their cars in their garage and/or driveways. Besides the fact that it makes the neighborhood look much nicer, the Sheriff’s department informs us that it reduces crime and makes our streets safer for travel. Deed restrictions also state that no

HIGH-STAKES TESTING During the April 12th Board meeting, the Cypress-Fairbanks ISD Board of Trustees passed a resolution calling for a re-examination of the public school accountability system by the Texas Legislature. The resolution states that standardized, high-stakes testing is undermining our mission to prepare students for competitive careers in the global arena. CFISD superintendent Dr. Mark Henry stated, “The educational system is overly dependent on high-stakes, standardized tests. Educators do support accountability, but at the same time, oppose the current system that does not support preparing all of our students to be productive citizens and leaders in a rapidly changing world. Standardized testing, as currently implemented, hinders progress toward a world-class educational system by driving instructional time.”

Recently, the CFISD Community Leadership Committee (CLC), whose membership includes parents, business leaders and community members, endorsed the Board’s resolution, which calls for the review of the role of highstakes testing and its impact on schools. According to Stacye Anderson, CLC community chairperson, “The CLC unanimously agreed to support the CFISD Board of Trustees Resolution Concerning High-stakes, Standardized Testing of Texas Public School Students. We are so glad to see our district become the largest district in the state so far to join this movement to implore our legislators to rethink the current approach to assessment of learning. Although we are extremely supportive of holding schools accountable for teaching all Texas children, the current overemphasis on standardized testing impedes learning and the requirement that the grade on End-of-Course

B.F. ADAM GOLF CLASSIC RAISES MORE THAN $108,000 The Cypress-Fairbanks community raised more than $108,000 for student scholarships during the Cy-Fair Educational Foundation (CFEF) B.F. Adam Golf Classic, held May 17th at Blackhorse Golf Club. A total of 296 golfers and 50 volunteers participated in the event - one of the largest non-celebrity tournaments in Houston. “This year’s tournament was another huge success for CFEF. The community once again came out in full support to make the tournament the best yet,” said Marie Holmes, director of the CFEF. Lead underwriters for the tournament were the Cypress Fairbanks Medical Center Hospital and the B.F. Adam Family. Platinum sponsors included Linebarger Goggan Blair & Sampson, LLP and Bay-IBI Group Architects.

to enhance social network, allow individuals with alzheimer’s to connect with each other. The Alzheimer’s Association, Houston & Southeast Texas Chapter will host a Memory Café for individuals with memory loss and their care partners from 3 to 5 pM, on July 15th near Cypress. This casual social meeting is open to anyone with progressive memory loss or cognitive impairment and their families or care partners. The café will enhance existing health and social care services, providing people with the opportunity to meet with others who have similar experiences. Attendees can play board or video games, do a session of Tai Chi, sing their favorite karaoke tune or simply take part in conversations with others. Information, as well as practical tips about coping with Alzheimer’s disease will be available. This informal setting provides emotional support and reduces the isolation often felt by people with dementia, their caregivers and families.

CERT training is designed to prepare you to help yourself, your family and your neighbors in the event of a catastrophic disaster. If emergency personnel are not available, you can use this training to save lives and protect property. For more information, see www.harriscountycitizencorps.com. (CERT). The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates that about 220 million tons of old computers and other technology hardware are trashed in the U.S. every year. At the same time, 43% of US households do not have a computer at home. This huge disparity is commonly referred to as the Digital Divide. La-fundacion.net in partnership with community organizations throughout Texas, is trying to bridge the gap by placing donated computers in the hands of those who do not have access to technology. La-fundacion.net collects donated computers that once refurbished, upgraded and loaded with legal copies of Windows are provided to organizations like The Women’s Home of Houston, churches, community centers or directly to Public School Children who do not have a home computer in partnership with Public Schools such as Houston’s Hamilton Middle School. Recycling your old computer or other electronic equipment is a great way to help those who cannot afford access to technology, but it can also help keep the environment free from dangerous pollutants and can even mean a few extra dollars in your pocket at tax time. Next time you upgrade your computer, your cell phone, etc, consider donating your old equipment to la-fundacion.net and Florida whose mission is to provide Technology and Education to those being left behind by the Information Age.
