Copperfield Crime Watch
Be thankful Copperfield! Because of YOU, Copperfield is experiencing statistically record low crime. At the same time, we are experiencing a record high number of calls for suspicious person/vehicles. In other words, when YOU call in suspicious behavior/activity, crime goes down in Copperfield! If you see any suspicious persons/ activity, call the Sheriff’s Department at 713-221-6000, option 1. For all emergencies, please call 911.
November 2012
The Copperfield Crime Watch is feeling very thankful this November. Please help us show our thankfulness to our local criminals by following these six easy steps, to help make sure they all have a nice warm jail cell this Thanksgiving. 1. Save the Sheriff Department’s phone number on your mobile phone now, 713-221-6000. Be aggressive in calling in all suspicious behavior/activity! 2. On your smart phone, download the Sheriff Department’s iWatch app to report any crimes at: http://iwatchharriscounty.com 3. Follow us on Facebook at “Copperfield Safety and Security,” where we just received over 530 Likes! You can find a link to this at the recently updated Copperfield Crime Watch website at: http://www.copperfield.org/watch.php 4. Follow us on Twitter @CPRFLDWatch 5. Attend our Crime Watch meetings! Our next meeting is on November 14, 2012, at 6:30 PM, at the Copperfield Community Center. We meet on the second Wednesday of each month. 6. Tell your friends and neighbors! The stronger we are as a community in fighting crime, the safer we can make Copperfield!

Cy-Fair Women’s Club Women Serving the Community
We had a wonderful experience spending time with our guest Jeanie Dunnihoo during our October meeting. We are all open to leading healthy lives, so Jeanie taught us about Herb Gardening. In November, we will make floral designs for the Holidays courtesy of our friendly HEB. This will prepare us for a fabulous holiday season, and of course, we are looking forward to our Holiday Party in December! CWC is a service organization that gives back to the community, so all funds raised will go right back to the community in scholarships for graduating high school seniors at Lone Star College, Cy-Fair and grants to other non-profits in our community as well.

See Something, Say Something!!
As a reminder, it is critical to be able to recognize something that is out of the ordinary. Although many residents don’t know all their neighbors, they usually know a few. They also become familiar with patterns of living, like when people leave for work, the cars normally seen in a driveway, etc. It is these patterns that become what we consider “normal.” Whenever we see something that is not normal, it should warrant our attention. It may be a vehicle parked in a driveway or street, it may be someone walking on the street from house to house or it may even look like someone who is working on a project. If anything looks suspicious, call the Sheriff (713-221-6000). If someone knocks on your door, make certain you know who it is before you open the door, it if sounds out of the ordinary, call the Sheriff. If you, in any way, think something may be suspicious, call it in to the Sheriff (713221-6000)! The Crime Watch Committee also asks you to consider becoming involved in our Crime Watch program. You may contact your village representative listed on the Copperfield website, in the Copperfield newsletter or visit one of our monthly committee meetings (Second Wednesday of each month at the Copperfield Community Center at 6:30 PM).

(CPV) DEED RESTRICTIONS PARKING & DEED RESTRICTION VIOLATIONS
Despite our efforts to keep our neighborhood looking good, sending reminders, letters, etc. There are still some homeowners that keep their old utility trailers parked in their driveway, as well as inoperable vehicles. Unauthorized vehicles are still an eye sore throughout the neighborhood and these few homeowners continue to violate these restrictions and obviously do not take pride in our subdivision. It is allowable to park your vehicle in the street; however, DO NOT park it in such a way that emergency vehicles cannot drive through or block wheel chair accessibility! Fire trucks are not able to get through when vehicles are parked on BOTH sides of the street and it becomes too narrow. Some homeowners are parking at the end of the cul- de- sac’s and not allowing people access to get their mail. These vehicles can and will be towed in an emergency at the homeowner’s expense. VEHICLES ARE REPORTED BEING PARKED IN THE POOL/PARKING AREA AFTER HOURS. TOWING WILL ALSO BE AT THE OWNERS’ EXPENSE.
APPROVALS FOR MODIFICATIONS/ADDITIONS/CHANGES
REMINDER THAT NO CHANGES CAN BE MADE WITHOUT PRIOR APPROVAL FROM THE ACC COMMITTEE! FORMS NEED TO BE FILLED OUT AND SUBMITTED FOR PRIOR APPROVAL. Roofing, painting, landscaping or any major changes must be approved by the Architectural Review Board. If you are not sure of the deed restrictions or what colors are allowable under the current deed restrictions, please contact SCS Management at 281-463-1777. Many homes are in desperate need of painting or mildew cleaning! Any modification of the front yard etc. that is out of the ordinary should be approved before landscaping with the Architectural Board Committee at SCS. Please trim ALL bushes, trees, shrubs that are planted in the cross corner

(EC) Email Listing
Every month SCS Management rides through Easton Commons to check for Deed Restriction violations. The Deed Restrictions set the standard on how our property is taken care of. A well maintained community will impact the property value of your home, which is most likely the largest investment you have. If you have received a letter from SCS regarding a Deed Restriction violation, please take care of the violation as soon as possible. If you are having problems getting an issue resolved, please contact SCS Management to inform them and to schedule a timeline for the correction. If you ignore the letter, additional letters are sent out which can result in additional expenses, which will be added to your account. If you are not sure of the Deed Restrictions, you can access them on www. copperfield.org under Easton Commons.
(EC) Trucks Prohibited
There are still incidences of large commercial trucks parking along the street near the entrance to the subdivision and adjacent to the park. The entrance to a residential neighborhood is no place for such vehicles, which are a safety problem, as well as unsightly and may interfere with traffic. Signs are posted that indicate that the parking of these vehicles is prohibited. When a truck parks in the restricted area, residents are encouraged to call the Harris County Sheriff’s Office non-emergency number (713-221-6000) to make a report.
(EC) Friendly Reminders
There have been a number of incidences of residents taking their trash out to the street for pickup too early and/or leaving the emptied containers on the street too long. Please remember that trash containers should not be placed on the street earlier than 6:00 PM of the day preceding pickup … 6:00 PM on Sunday for Monday pickup and 6:00 PM on Wednesday for Thursday pickup. The emptied containers should also be recovered from the street no later than 6:00 PM of the pickup days. Thank you for your cooperation.

Southcreek residents also had the opportunity to learn about crime prevention, fire prevention and water conservation.

Thanks to our sponsor, Target, who made this event a huge success. Target provided pizza, drinks, face painting and “give a ways at the event. course, if she is going to cook all that food, she may as well host, right? It’s just more convenient for everyone. It can be hard to say no and hard to break free of family norms and traditions. But without speaking up and saying, “no,” it is never going to stop. It is up to us to set the boundaries and limits of what others expect from us. By setting these boundaries, we can reduce our obligations - at least some of them - and thereby reduce some of our stress. If you are the designated hostess or family cook consider ordering out or hosting a potluck dinner, where everyone contributes.

3. Count to Ten We’ve all heard this one before: when angry or upset, just count to ten and let your rational side gain control over knee-jerk reactions. It’s easier said than done, but when you at least try to count to ten, chance are you’ll be somewhat calmer when addressing whatever concern comes your way. Around the holidays it is especially important to “check” yourself before reacting to a statement or suggestion that may be explosive. We’ve all been in challenging situations with family members where they simply don’t listen. It is important to take a deep breath and smile. Tomorrow is another day! 4. Be Creative with Seating Arrangements Let’s face it: not everyone is best friends with all family members all the time. Let’s say your husband has never gotten along with your brother. You can deny that the tension exists or you can accept it and simply sit them at opposite ends of the dinner table. You’ll never eliminate potential conflict, but the key word here is REDUCE. 5. Keep People Busy Keeping everyone occupied during the holiday meal preparation and after can be one way of reducing potential problems. If everyone has set tasks such as setting the table, making the gravy, folding napkins - they may too busy to nit-pick anyone else. The same goes for after dinner, too. Give everyone a task before they are “allowed” to go watch a game on TV. Maybe the task is simply bringing all the dishes to the kitchen or emptying the trash. Whatever it is, give everyone at least one small task rather than let a small group of people (often, the women in the family) take on the entire role of cleaning up. 6. Leave It Alone You might not agree with someone’s choice of a car, food preferences, spouse, house payments or vacation destination. But it isn’t your life. Holidays should be a time to enjoy, but we all know that jealousy and insecurity tend to raise their ugly heads during family gatherings. If you are the one who is challenged during the holidays, remember that people who challenge do so because they may somehow be threatened by your choice. If you understand that, it becomes easier not to explode emotionally and simply address the question with kindness. Some topics might not be easily explained or discussed and a simple, “That’s an interesting point,” is a tactful way to avoid potential conflict. And here is the hardest part: when others try to pick a fight (even if it is unintentional on their part), be the bigger person. 7. Deal with Finances We may not buy presents for family members on Thanksgiving, but Thanksgiving is far from innocent when it comes to our paychecks. All that food costs money - and Thanksgiving is actually a bigger travel day for Americans than Chanukah and Christmas. The train fares and airfares are often three or four times average costs during this four-day holiday. One way to reduce your cost for food is to host a potluck or suggest it to whoever is hosting the family dinner. All those leftovers, if stored and divided up properly, can mean several meals for each family after T-day! 8. Get Enough Sleep Stress begets insomnia - and insomnia begets stress. This vicious cycle can be stopped - be sure to get a good night’s rest. Sleep is especially important

9. Stay Healthier Holiday stress can feel a lot worse if you’re not feeling 100%. Getting enough sleep is the first step to avoiding sickness over the holidays. Some other tips include a glass of orange juice each day, washing your hands as often as possible and covering your mouth up when going outside into cold weather. A scarf can also double as a “protector” when surrounded by people at stores or on public transportation who are sick and coughing. Taking a walk can help you clear your mind, reduce stress and help you get exercise. All of these things will aid in keeping you healthier this season. 10. Embrace Your Family, Flaws and All Around the holidays, we are bombarded by made for TV movies that showcase the joy and love around the holidays. Real-life families are not perfect. The first step to having a good time around the holidays is to realize you will have potential conflict and that it is normal. The stories may be different from family to family, but we’ve all experienced some silly or unbelievable things during the holidays. Laughing about past holiday events can be a great way to break the ice if things start going downhill. Ask everyone to talk about the funniest or most embarrassing thing that happened last Thanksgiving, you’ll be surprised at the bond this forms. 11. One Last Tip: Celebrate Those Who are With You in Spirit During the holiday season, we are often saddened by the memories of loved ones who are no longer with us. If this is the first Thanksgiving without a dear loved one, it is normal to feel lonely, scared, depressed, lost, angry, upset, bitter, sad, resentful, hopeful, all in one. The holidays without a loved one can be particularly painful as we remember some of the beautiful moments we shared with this person or the things we didn’t say or do. Some families abandon holiday traditions after the passing of a loved one, but this can make the transition to life without them even more difficult. Surrounding yourself by people you love, surviving family members or friends and neighbors, can help you cope through the holidays. Remember your loved ones and know that they are with you in spirit.

during the holiday season, because we get so worn down during the day with extra duties. Holiday cooking, preparing to host a gathering, shopping for presents or food are all additional chores on top of our already busy lives. Take note of the fact that you’re performing double or even triple duty. Sleep lets us recover from our hard work, is essential to maintaining an even keel when things get rough and helps gives us needed energy to get through the holidays!

Copperfield pays a flat fee to Centerpoint Energy for our streetlights, no matter the condition of the lights. It is important to report any non-working streetlights, as Centerpoint will not charge us to fix them. These reports will help our neighborhood remain an attractive place to live. Please report nonworking lights to Centerpoint at 713-207-2222. Include the pole ID number when you call.
(SD) Crime Watch
During this time of year, crime is up especially in shopping areas and at restaurants. Remove all articles of value from plain sight in your vehicle, especially if you are at a restaurant to business. Items of value include, but are not limited to, GPS systems, cell phones, iPads, iPhones and anything else you paid more than $100 to purchase. When you go to the gas station, remove your purse or wallet from plain sight and LOCK your car when you get out to pump gas. While shopping, do not leave your purse or wallet in plain view in the shopping cart. Using the strap on your purse, drape it over your shoulder. Thieves will steal your wallet and have your money spent before you realize it is missing. If you see something suspicious (suspicious is defined as something that does not seem right to you), please immediately call the non-emergency number 713-221-6000 (option 1) or 911, if necessary. Working together, we can continue to keep Southdown Village safe. Register your name at www.copperfield.org/sl_register.php for updates on crime and community activities.

• Backdoor trash pick-up for household items is on Monday and Thursday (heavy items) mornings. Grass clippings and yard waste must be placed at the curb. Please do not place your grass clipping at the curb before the night preceding pickup. It changes the perception of our neighborhood and is a common complaint of your neighbors. • Recycling pick up is on Thursday mornings. The recycling program was significantly expanded in 2010. We encourage you to reference the new guidelines at www.copperfield.org/southdown_village.php - Look for the Recycling Information section on the page.

(WC) National Night Out
Westcreek held seven (7) street gatherings on Oct. 2nd for National Night Out for the purpose of meeting neighbors so as to strengthen neighborhood watches and to deter crime. Stressed at every event was the theme “If you see something, say something” and putting the Sheriff Dept.’s non emergency number, 713-221-6000, into cell phones to report suspicious behavior. Many new neighbors joined long time residents and it was a great opportunity to exchange emails and phone numbers in the event of a future emergency. Those who hosted the gatherings appreciate the donations made by these community businesses: Krogers, Wal-mart, HEB, Fuddruckers, CVS Pharmacy, Boston Market, Willie’s Ice House, Sam’s Club, Carrabba’s, Wings N More, Outback Steakhouse and Retired Bill’s Pressure Washing. To encourage participation, a drawing was held and the winners were as follows: $25 Carrabba’s gift certificate - Taylor family; $25 Outback Steakhouse gift certificates - Schmidt & Anderson families; $20 Wings N More gift certificate - Frazier family; $10 Wings N More gift certificate Parson family; Retired Bill’s Pressure Wash Certificate - Franco family. Westcreek would like a captain for every block, so if you would like more information about how to serve in this position, please contact Larry Berger at larry.berger@sug.com - However, all neighbors are encouraged to attend the monthly Westcreek Crime Watch meeting and it takes less than an hour a month.

(WC) Graffiti, Vandalism & Mischief
Unfortunately in Sept., there were incidents involving graffiti and vandalism. A large amount of graffiti was found on the culverts near Hudson Oaks and the greenbelt. The memorial rock placed in Gen Fischer’s memory was also spray painted. On a different occasion, the Hudson Oaks pool was vandalized. These incidents cost all of us money since it is Homeowner Association Funds that will be spent to remove the paint and repair the damage. Nothing in life is free. So when our neighborhood items are damaged or spray-painted, each homeowner monetarily contributes to the remediation. Our funds could be better spent making Westcreek a more beautiful and safer place to live. community. Many of these signs have not been returned to their owners. If you see or find one of these signs, please return it to LCHS or to the Copperfield Information Center where it can be returned. What seems like a harmless prank, costs many parents money and often our high school students are viewed in a negative way. If you own a yard sign, please put your name, phone number and address on the back to speed recovery. Some parents chain the signs to a tree to prevent theft. Other communities place the sign in an inside window. Again, these signs cost money and to have to purchase a replacement can be a financial burden on some families.

Finally we have cooler weather upon us to enjoy the cool evenings and mornings we have missed all summer long. Insect and fungus damage should still be part of your main considerations as we are moving out of the intense heat and into cooler times. • Insect Control - chinch bugs can still be working to destroy our lawns if we haven’t fully eliminated their presence. Continue to monitor and treat any areas you may suspect chinch bugs may be present. Ortho “Max” or Spectricide “Triazicide” are both good liquid products to utilize. • Fungus Control - November is when Brownpatch fungus will really start to take its toll if we fail to treat our lawns properly and scale back on the amount of water applied. Remember, when evening temperatures fall below 60 degrees, this problematic fungus will likely re-appear where you have had it before. The best strategy for limiting and controlling Brownpatch; • Change your watering schedule by eliminating any evening watering sessions. Leaving the lawn wet in the evening is an open invitation for Brownpatch to appear. • Alter your fertilizer in use to limit the amount of nitrogen to only a “slowrelease” combination. • For treatment, Fertilome liquid systemic, Daconil or a double dose or Terrachlor should help stop any apparent signs from growing or increasing. • Please - don’t wait until the famous “rings of death” appear – treat before you see the telltale signs and avoid the breakout altogether! Remember - it is much easier to prevent Brownpatch than it is to control/eliminate it. • Trees - Do not forget to continue to deep water trees at least as long as overnight temperatures stay above 70 degrees. Just because it is cooler doesn’t mean they do not require attention. • Fall is for Planting - with the cooler months and the chance for new trees and shrubs to become better established before warmer weather is back, so now is the time to consider planting new trees or ornamentals. If you do choose to add new trees or ornamentals;

• Be sure you enrich the soil with appropriate tree/shrub soil. Be sure you do not use in-ground developed soils for containerized ornamentals. o Introducing excessive amounts of fresh hardwood mulch or manure-based material can burn root systems and kill the plant before it can get established. • If you moved any seasonal Poinsettias outdoors last winter with the hopes of being able to enjoy them again this holiday season now is the time to move the plants into a container and move indoors, providing at least 14 hours of ABSOLUTE DARKNESS daily for at least 6-8 weeks. Copperfield Coalition A Non-Profit Incorporated Organization
Crime, Security and Safety Town Hall Meeting of September 18, 2012
The Copperfield Coalition hosted a Town Hall meeting concerning crime, security and safety on September 18, 2012. The main topics were 1) speeding and running of stop signs, 2) brothels, 3) drugs and 4) the need for more deputies. We had 400 plus people in attendance. This meeting represented over 21 communities within the Coalition boundaries (boundaries can be seen on our website, www.CopperfieldCoalition.COM) Guest speakers were Rep. Dwayne Bohac, Judge Jeff Williams, Sheriff Adrian Garcia, Constable Ron Hickman (Pct. 4), Assistant Chief Constable John Laine (Pct. 5), Melissa Spinks (Prosecutor for Harris County Attorney
18
Vince Ryan), First Assistant District Attorney Jim Leitner, Brad Hart with the DA office, Fire Marshall Mike Montgomery, Sean Walsh (CCA Crime Watch), Capt. Ricks, Capt. Glesmann and Sgt. Franks (Sheriff’s Department). Sean Walsh gave a brief summary of what the Crime Watch Committee does and urged people to pay attention to their surroundings and to call the Sheriff’s non-emergency number 713-221-6000 if they see anything suspicious. Sgt. Franks introduced a new app that is available for smart phones and PCs called iwatchharriscounty for phones and iwatchharriscounty.com for PCs. He has informed us that it has had tremendous success thus far and urged people to use it. He indicated that you may stay completely anonymous if you wish. The site is monitored 24/7 and will yield results. Capt. Glesmann with District 5 of the Sheriff’s Department laid out their entire area. They usually have 7 Sheriff units and 10-12 contract units. The Coalition area is in NW2, section 5C. We count for about 20% of all their calls. Constable Ron Hickman addressed Human Trafficking. He is working with Capt. Ricky Ricks from the Sheriff’s office and is also working with a task force to help change and set regulations for massage parlors. Harris County Commissioner Jack Cagle is leading the effort to push the new / modified regulations through Commissioner’s Court which needs to be signed off by Judge Ed Emmett. He also informed us that about 25% of all Human Trafficking comes through Houston. Capt. Ricks discussed the Drugs, Distribution Centers and Paraphernalia Shops. All drug related work is regulated by the DEA. He indicated that it is hard to close down shops since you must prove knowledge of intent plus intent on using for drug purposes. Once proven, these are only Class C misdemeanors. If sold to minors, then it becomes a felony, but again, they must have all the proof of knowledge and intent.
November 2012

Brad Hart works with Capt. Ricks. He stated that “Houston is a huge traffic distribution hub due to the close proximity to the border.” The DEA works the “Pill Mill” (drug distribution centers), including doctors that write too many prescriptions. They have already closed down about 30 locations this year. They have seen a huge decrease in cocaine distribution. The next big industry is Marijuana Grow Houses. Sheriff Adrian Garcia introduced all staff and patrol officers at the meeting. He stated that this group of people is always working to improve the area. State Rep. Dwayne Bohac spoke about how he grew up in the area and still has family living here. He stated he is always working toward “Local Quality of Life” as his top priority. He has worked on regulations for Mobile Food Vendors. Next year he will work on budget, schools, Medicaid and criminal justice. He is trying to get tax dollars to help work the human and drug trafficking before it comes across the border.

The Copperfield Coalition summarized all the questions that they received through e-mail, giving many street names and adjectives that were used to describe stories concerning the mass problem of speeding and running of stop signs throughout our communities. Why are police officers speeding in the area without lights on? Sherriff Garcia addressed this saying this should never happen. Any deputy caught speeding or driving recklessly will be held accountable. He stated that deputies do surpass the speed limit when in route to a call. Using lights every time they get a call tends to cause more problems with traffic than without. Can we implement a zero tolerance and post signs for speeding? Sheriff Garcia advised going to the Commissioner’s office to look at the possibility of installing traffic calming devices (i.e. speed bumps, medians, etc.). Capt. Glesmann said that we can look into doing a zero tolerance program. How can we get more officers and tickets written in our area and not just the month before our meeting? Asst. Chief John Laine provided statistics for the last 2 weeks (beginning of September). Constable deputies from Precinct 5 had written over 1,000 tickets and issued 215 warnings. He also indicated that 20-25% of those people live in this area. One hundred-thirty of these tickets were given for running the stop sign at Western Pass and Forest Heights. He also mentioned that five to six people were given a citation for running the same stop sign on two different occasions. He also mentioned that one person was given a citation for running the same stop sign on three different occasions. He also informed that driver if there is a fourth time, he would be going to jail. Judge Williams said that the day after Memorial Day, 3,500 citations were given in one day for his entire district, which resulted in $77,000 in fines being paid.

Questions from the floor: Why is there no accountability clause in the contract with the Sheriff’s Department? We would like to see more added to the contract.

Sheriff Garcia commented that he would look into that.

Comment about Easton Commons/Shetland Place Dr. There have been many accidents there, including a DWI fatality and speeding in the area. Residents are afraid to play in front yard and street. Can the “system” treat human trafficking arrests as “victims?” Sgt. Ricks: During a raid and/or arrest, they are asked if they are being used for Human Trafficking (forced to do this against their will). However, many of the call girls are there due to addictions. Sheriff Garcia: About 4,000 officers all have gone through the Homeland Security Human Trafficking training. They also have an outreach program that works with female prisoners/victims. Ron Hickman: Officers are guided by what the law permits. Law defines them as criminals. Women must also ask for help; most never do. Ms. Spinks/County attorney office: They have started filing lawsuits against the so-called massage parlors and are now starting to name the clientele (the “johns”) on the lawsuit and being able to name them in court. Ashley: She stated that she works with Redeemed Ministries and has visited and worked with the women in massage parlors in the area. She believes that 97% of these are victims of Human Trafficking. Please give more info concerning the latest big bust on “grow houses.” Sherriff Garcia: The DEA handles these. There is approximately $60,000,000 street value price range of product found in these homes. This is usually found in a lease home where owner lives out of town. They typically pay above market lease rates. Sgt. Ricks: Most activity is in the middle of the night. Things look normal on the outside; however, on the inside the house is gutted and set up with grow lamps. The windows are blackened so the bright lights cannot be seen at night. Ron Hickman: A home in Stonegate was shutdown. The home had been abandoned and they were stealing electricity from neighbors. Judge Williams: Most are lease homes where the landlord lives out of state. The court does not seize the property, but the home is not livable due to mold problems afterwards, which is caused by the excessive humidity and watering of plants. How do we handle Panhandlers (including Houston Chronicle people and those asking for donations)? Sgt. Glesmann: Let him know. He has a contract officer that specializes in panhandlers. He asked that you call this number to report: 281-290-2800. Sheriff Garcia: Please do not give money or food to these people. It just helps invite others to do the same. Sheltering Arms will send vans to the area for neighborhood sweeps to provide assistance.

We would like to thank all the guest speakers and special guests for participating in our Town Hall Meeting. Since the Town Hall Meeting As of October 1, 2012, it has been noted that BC Spa on FM 529 on Barker Cypress and Massage Only U at Barker Cypress and Tuckerton have been closed for business. There are still quite a few out there, but we will keep fighting until they are all gone. Captain Glesmann has started a campaign against speeding and the running of stop signs. Please view our website as we will post stats as they become available. On the drug paraphernalia shops, we plan to meet with lawmakers to see what can be done to change the laws to make drug paraphernalia illegal to possess no matter what the intent. We do not see any logical reason anyone should be allowed to own a bong. The only purpose we know of is for smoking marijuana or crack cocaine.

Father and Son Raise Flags Each Weekday at CCS Michael Shassere and his son, Nicolas, began raising the American, Texas and Christian flags at CCS each weekday morning at the beginning of last year, when Nicolas needed a service project for Cub Scouts. Mr. Shassere writes, “Nicolas enjoyed this so much that he asked Elementary Principal Mr. White if this could be ‘our service to CCS.’ As we all know, parents are rushed in the mornings getting children ready for school, carpooling and off to class. With this project, Nicolas and I enjoy focused father-son time, sharing in the fact that even such a small act is an act of selflessness and as such, honors God, our country, our state and all the staff at CCS.” Cy-Christian Students JAM to Set Record Students and teachers at Cypress Christian School - along with children and adults from around the country - took a one minute fitness break to participate in the first ever JAM World Record 2012. It was a quick, easy and FUN routine for students of all ages and abilities. This national initiative

JAM World Record 2012, along with Let’s Move in School urges everyone to support schools where every student has the opportunity to learn healthy habits and participate in a quality physical education program. CCS joined the effort to reach the goal of two million JAMmers! Shown “JAMming” are fifth graders Aubri Garrett and Katie Bretz.

THIRD ANNUAL CYPRESS HOOPS INVITATIONAL
GO CY-CHRISTIAN WARRIORS! Jr. Pep Squad members, comprised of CCS K-5th graders, performed their cheer and dance routines for a packed crowd at Warrior Stadium. After a week of instruction from the CCS Varsity and Middle School Cheerleaders, they were ready to show off their skills! Working with and loving on the elementary Jr. Pep Squad gave cheerleaders a chance to put their CCS cheer motto into action - “Whatever we do, we aim to honor God.”
Cy-Fair Educational Foundation (CFEF) is gearing up for their highly anticipated Cypress Hoops Invitational Tournament to be held for the third year December 6 through 8, 2012. Twenty-four high school varsity level teams, including those from Cy-Fair ISD and outside the district, will compete over the three day event at various high schools with the championship games held at the Berry Center.
Cy-Christian to Host K-12 Fall Preview On Thursday, November 8th, from 7-8:30 PM, prospective families will be given the opportunity to visit Cypress Christian School to gather information and tour of the campus. The Admissions Department will begin accepting applications for 2013-2014 on this date. For more information, visit CypressChristian.org or call 281-469-7745.
Joining the tournament for the first time this year will be two teams from outside the Houston area. “A team from Crowley and one from South Grand Prairie will be traveling to Houston for the event,” said Teresa Hull, event co-chair. “This is so exciting because it means that word has gotten out about the high level of organization and quality of our tournament. This will help us continue to build state recognition and gives us great potential to grow,” she said.
Cy-Christian Christmas Concert on December 6th You are invited to the Cypress Christian School Christmas concert, “Joy to the World,” to join us as we celebrate the birth of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ! Family members and friends will enjoy delightful performances by elementary, middle school and high school students. The award-winning CCS Concert Choir will also present special music during the evening. Please invite family members and friends to join you for this joyful event on Thursday, December 6th from 7:00 to 8:30 PM in the main auditorium of Christ Church Baptist Fellowship at 12501 Champion Forest Drive in northwest Houston. For more information, please call 281-469-8829 or visit the school website at CypressChristian.org
The tournament was started by community member Eric Burg and modeled after an extremely successful tournament held in Pasadena. Burg, who played basketball in Cy Fair ISD, wanted a way to showcase the talent and facilities in Cy-Fair ISD and the tournament grew from there.

In a nail biter championship game between Klein and Cypress Falls last year, Klein pulled ahead in the last moment of the game and won the tournament. “These games are so fun to watch,” said Teresa. “We are hoping to attract many spectators to cheer for the kids since ticket prices are so reasonable (just $2 for students and $3 for adults). We want a lot seats in the seats!” she said.

It takes a lot of community volunteers to put on an event that is as well run and organized as the Cypress Hoops Invitational. “Instrumental in last year’s event were John Fox, Fox and Bubela and Leslie Martone, who is now President of the Cy Fair Chamber of Commerce and sponsors such as the event’s underwriter, North Cypress Medical Center,” said Hull. Last year the tournament raised $17,161.58. All proceeds raised through entry fees, game tickets and sponsorships go to the Foundation’s “Donate to Educate” program, which provides college scholarships for district students as well as staff development grants to CFISD. For more information about ways to participate, contact Marie Holmes at 281-807-3591 or marie@ thecfef.org (email).
SALUTE TO OUR HEROES CY-FAIR EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION HONORS MILITARY HEROES
February 9, 2013 The Foundation will kick off it’s fifth “Salute to Our Heroes” event on February 9, 2013 at the Omni Hotel Westside Houston. “Salute to Our Heroes” honors the brave men and women who have served to preserve our freedom and liberty. Proceeds from this event go to an endowment enabling graduating students from CFISD to attend college. The event will be generously underwritten by Earthcare Management and Kodiak Gas Services, as the Missing Man Underwriters. The Cypress Fairbanks Medical Center Hospital will be the Major General Sponsor. This year our guest speaker is Steve Russell. LTC Steve Russell (Ret) commanded the central unit responsible in the hunt and capture of Saddam Hussein. Through leadership and joint efforts across multiple teams, a large organization worked effectively to capture one of the world’s most notorious criminals. Russell is an American Hero. His proven leadership and problemresolution techniques engage audiences through his storytelling.

Salute to Our Heroes has two purposes. First, to give tribute to our heroes soldiers serving now, veterans and those who have been wounded or killed in action. We want to honor those who have served their country. The second purpose is to raise funds for scholarships for Cy-Fair ISD students. Each year we give three scholarships per Cy-Fair ISD high school and the number of high schools is growing. It has been a challenge keeping up with the demand, but CFEF is dedicated to this mission. The inaugural event honors Jersey Village High School graduate 1st Lt. Jeremy E. Ray, who was killed Dec. 20, 2007 while serving his country in Iraq. A CFEF endowment was established in Jeremy’s memory by an anonymous donor. Last year the 1st Lieutenant Jeremy Ray Community Service and Peace Award was presented to Klein Funeral Homes & Memorials. Following tradition, the event will have the Missing Man Table & Honors Ceremony. The table will have empty table settings with chairs leaning up against the table as though saved for someone. The table settings have a single red rose displayed in a vase in reminder of the bloodshed for our country and the vase was tied with a red ribbon - a symbol of the continued pledge to shed blood for our country. A slice of lemon on the bread plate is a reminder of the bitterness of the loss of comrades in arms; a bowl of salt to symbolize the tears shed by family members of lost loved ones and glasses turned upside down indicate no one will sit there. Last year’s ceremony was performed by the 75th Army Division Honor Guard and was proceeded by Taps performed by William Veenstra, Cy-Fair High School Senior. For more information on the 2013 event please contact Marie Holmes at 281807-3591 or marie@thecfef.org (email).

and districts that are achieving academic success through cost-effective operations. Award recipients achieved strong academic performance while spending relatively little compared to their peers. Only 329 school campuses statewide received this distinction for high rankings in the 2012 Financial Allocation Study for Texas (FAST), meaning CFISD accounted for 9.1 percent of all Honors Circle campuses statewide. CFISD was one of only 43 Texas districts to earn the five-star rating from the office of Susan Combs, Texas Comptroller, for academic and financial performance. A five-star rating reflects the strongest relative academic progress combined with the lowest relative spending. Elementary campuses receiving the award achieved a five-star FAST rating, while middle and high-school campuses tapped for the honor achieved at least a 4.5-star FAST rating. CY-FAIR ISD & VOLUNTEERS IN PUBLIC SCHOOLS (VIPS) Where “Volunteers are Treasures!”
All of our volunteers are true treasured heroes. They help in the library, sell school spirit items, organize fundraisers, read to a classroom, make costumes and test vision and hearing. The list is endless and their experience is vast. If you listen to their stories though, you will find that in all the things volunteers do, there is an element of discovery. They find not only what a child can do, but what their own treasured gift might be. And yes, there has probably even been an encounter with a dragon or two along the way.

What a great turn out for our Fall Concert! A beautiful night, with beautiful voices. All choirs did an outstanding job with their vocal performances and smiles showed the pride. The Barbeque Dinner and Silent Auction were a huge success. Thank you to all our donors for their generosity. All items will be fully enjoyed, as well as the opportunity these funds will provide for our students. All choirs were fantastic as the diners were serenaded in a variety of styles. The solo artists were in true idol style and enjoyed by all! Carl’s BBQ

Langham Creek High School LANGHAM CREEK CHEER IS TEXAS PROUD
The Langham Creek Cheer Squad hosted over 1200 beautifully dressed guests who proved that cowboy boots go with everything at their fabulous Homecoming extravaganza on Saturday, September 22, 2012. The Berry Center came alive with Texas Chic decorations highlighting the “Black Tie Texas” theme and great music and fun. Thank you to all the cheer parents and LCHS administrators who worked to create this special evening for the students. Also, a big thank you to our local merchants who made donations to this event to make it even more enjoyable for all involved: Tailored Sweets by Kathleen Wiggins, Cypress Driving Academy, HEB and Randalls. Thank you for your support of our school and community. When the cheerleaders were not working on Homecoming, they, along with our electrifying mascot, Larry the Lobo, could be found on the sidelines of our mighty Lobo football games and several of the LC volleyball games. Our Larry the Lobo, aka Josh Attra, has been lighting up the “dance-offs” with the other school mascots. He always gets the crowd cheering with his moves!

“I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ? We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through November. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.

GIRL SCOUTS OF SAN JACINO COUNCIL COPPER CORNERS SERVICE UNIT
Copper Corners Service Unit would like to thank all those adults and older girls who volunteered to help at our Rally Nights in September! Special thanks to Susan Bartos and Diane Massie who coordinated the events. We formed 13 new troops and many of our new leaders have already been attending their first training sessions! These new leaders also participated in an Investiture ceremony at our service unit meeting in October, where they received their Girl Scout pins. We also enjoyed a special birthday cake to honor both Juliette Gordon Low, the founder of Girl Scouting in the United States (born on Oct 31st) and Girl Scouting’s 100th birthday.

Copper Corners Service Unit is planning a number of events for the coming year. Girl Scout events begin with girl planning, so we’ll be recruiting girls from the service unit to bring their suggestions and ideas to these planning boards. Some of these events will be Daisy Day and Brownie Day, for those two age levels, as well as an event for older girls (Junior level and above). Leader/ Daughter Weekend is a chance for busy leaders to spend time with their OWN daughters. Past Leader-Daughter weekends have included a miz of camp activities with the extra fun of visiting Wimberley on the way home. We are also planning a “Me and My Guy” event later in the year, when girls will have a special evening with their special “guy” (dad, grand-dad, other relative or special friend). It is always a memorable event, whether it involves a formal dance or a baseball game! If you have plans to visit the State Fair of Texas, be sure to see the Girl Scout exhibition area. Those who have say it is very impressive and quite an experience! Don’t miss out on the fun! It is never too late to join Girl Scouts! Girl Scouting is open to all girls between the ages of 5 (must be in kindergarten) to 18, who are willing to live by the Girl Scout Promise and Law. Girls may join at any time and at any level and no previous scouting experience is required. Don’t forget that many of our most exciting opportunities are available for older girls! Copper Corners Service Unit serves girls in the residence areas for Birkes, Fiest and Lowery Elementary schools, Aragon and Labay Middle schools and the corresponding high schools. Home schooled and private school students are always welcome. Please contact Diane Massie at 281550-9148 for more information. The website for Girl Scouts of San Jacinto Council is www.gssjc.org

Cypress UMC Goes Back to School A Church’s Challenge to Volunteer
Not content with giving $8,000 to a local elementary school last February, the members of Cypress UMC are now volunteering hundreds of hours on CFISD campuses. The congregation was challenged by their senior pastor, Jerome Brimmage, to volunteer a total of 2,000 hours within ninety days. In addition to volunteering on various campuses, Cypress UMC has adopted a second school, Millsap Elementary. The church previously adopted Adam Elementary in the spring of 2011. As the beginning of school approached, the church donated, delivered and organized enough school supplies in August for 250 students, to be split between Millsap and Adam.

fun foundation for classical music that will last a lifetime. Filled with fact and fancy about the world’s most notable composers and their compositions, Beethoven’s Wig is the perfect blend of high brow and hi-jinks, lunacy and learning. Ask us about our Scout ticket rate! Tickets: $8-15. Ars Lyrica presents ‘Pypeth the Watche!’ - 3 PM, Tuesday, November 13, 2012. During the Renaissance and for the next few centuries, the Stadtpfeifer (or “Wait” in England and “Piffaro” in Italy) bands were musical watchmen who proved their watchfulness by piping loudly all over cities during the night, waking residents to announce that all was well. In honor of this little-known (but deeply influential) renaissance Stadtpfeifer tradition, the Shepherd School Crumhorn Collective will present a lively program of German, English, Flemish and French polyphony and dance music, written by and for 16th century civic minstrels. Tickets: $6 - $12. All Children’s Series concerts are free and no tickets are distributed.

Thus, Kimberly is trapped inside the frail physical body of an elderly woman. She meets another misfit (a teenage boy) and the two form an attachment to one another that borders on attraction. The situation is not helped by Kimberly’s rapidly deteriorating health. Soon Kimberly’s family gets mixed up in some crazy money schemes and the family gets emotionally destroyed. Cypress Assistance Ministries Volunteers Needed
When you volunteer you are giving to your community, but did you realize volunteering also benefits you as an individual? CAM volunteers often let us know the fun they are having, the friends they have made and the fulfillment they receive from helping others. The services provided at CAM, are made possible by many dedicated volunteers. If you enjoy working with the public, decorating or merchandising, then serving in CAM’s resale shop, Angels’ Attic, is the place for you. Our busy community donation area, the Cellar, is looking for people willing to serve by processing donations and restocking Angels’ Attic. Please plan to attend a volunteer tour and orientation by calling Tara Rauch 281-955-7683 or email at tarar@cypressassistance.org For a description of the services provided at Cypress Assistance Ministries, Food Pantry requests, and a detailed description of volunteer opportunities, please see our web site, www.cypressassistance.org

Volunteers are the Heart of Hospice, they are a vital part of the hospice team. What volunteers can do to show that they care is everything from providing caregiver relief, being the friendly visitor with the smile, holding someone’s hand, providing that extra loving care and being a good listener. Volunteering can include music or pet therapy and much much more. All those interested in volunteering, please contact Adrienne Harris at adharris@odyshealth.com or 281-463-3697 (VistaCare).

STANDUP FOR KIDS
How would you feel if you saved a kid’s life? StandUp For Kids is an all volunteer organization dedicated to saving the lives of at-risk and homeless kids through volunteer outreach efforts. Our volunteers search the streets in order to find, stabilize and otherwise help homeless and street kids improve their lives. Texas has the highest rate of homeless youth in the U.S. StandUp For Kids needs supplies for our Houston program, which provides food, clothing, counseling and a safe environment for the homeless youth of Houston. If you or your organization would like to hold a food or clothing drive for StandUp For Kids please contact me at HeatherE@standupforkids.org to learn more about StandUp For Kids or how you can help visit our website at www.standupforkids.org The single greatest need, for homeless and street kids is our continuous caring and real support. We must convince them that we care, we want them back and we want to help them get off the streets.

CY-FAIR RESIDENTS TO SPEND LESS TIME ON US 290 AS KEY CONSTRUCTION COMPLETION DATES MOVE UP
Cy-Fair residents and businesses can expect to get some muchneeded traffic relief on one of the top 25 congested roads in Texas. Thanks to $168 million in funding provided by state legislators and part of the additional $2 billion TxDOT identified earlier this year, some key construction projects along US 290 in Houston will be completed up to two decades earlier than originally scheduled. The completion of critical projects also means travelers will see a 40 percent decrease in time spent in traffic along US 290. TxDOT and the Harris County Toll Road Authority (HCTRA) are working to finalize an agreement to provide the needed funding allocated by the Legislature. Under the agreement, TxDOT will contribute $787 million and HCTRA $400 million putting all US 290 projects between IH 610 and SH 99 (Grand Parkway) under construction by the middle of 2014. Project plans include: • Reconstruction and widening of US 290 • Four general purpose lanes for in and outbound traffic • Two to three reversible managed lanes in the middle to carry HOV and tolled traffic • Future construction of the parallel Hempstead Tollway • A bike trail and right-of-way preservation for a high-capacity transit system • Additional safety improvements that should reduce the number of accidents that typically cause big delays
