(EC) COPPERFIELD NEIGHBORHOOD EGRET INVASION

numbers, leaving a stench and mess after they migrated. In order to deter the birds from returning to their area they spent over $30,000 to reduce the amount of mature live oaks from their park, clean the park area and replant landscaping. Unfortunately, the birds moved no more than a mile away to unsuspecting Copperfield homeowner’s trees. The Problem: Egrets and herons are just a few of the birds that come in. Over 100 birds can come in at one time and they come in waves. The birds will eat all of the neighboring grass; leaving the ground baron, they are extremely noisy, produce a smell from all of the droppings, dead offspring and dead fish that were dropped by the adult birds, they can produce two or more sets of hatchlings in one season. The Law: The birds are a federally protected species while nesting. Migratory birds are protected by international treaty. Once birds begin sitting on nests, eggs are probably present. You cannot kill, harass, move or disturb the birds during nesting season. Once the birds migrate in October, property owners may begin proactive steps to inhibit their return. What Can You Do: Be proactive by discouraging these birds from nesting in your area by trimming your trees and remove dead wood, thin your tree canopy to allow sunlight between limbs and other trees, remove old (inactive) nests.
All situations: • Need a fast close? • Foreclosure? • Dealing with divorce? • Settling an estate? • Home maintenance or damage? • No longer want to be a landlord?
What to watch for: January-March watch for “sentry” birds. They are the first to arrive, looking for good nesting places. Birds: “Sentry” birds, Yellow-crowned night Heron, Cattle Egret, Great Egret, Great Blue Heron, Little Blue Heron, Snowy Egret.
we can help!!! Call
832-303-0697
Action Plan if you see large birds in your trees: If you see these birds and nesting material in your trees you must take action quickly. Begin scare tactics; use noisemakers, water spray or shine lights at night. Hang “scare eye” balloons or other moving objects in trees. Use long poles, tennis balls or water hoses to disturb early nesting material. Check your trees at least twice a day (morning & evening). Remove the start of any nests. Birds can build nests in just two days and lay an egg on the second day.

Northmead Village
(NM) HOME IMPROVEMENT REQUIREMENTS
(NM) EGRETSAND NIGHT HERONS ARE IN NORTHMEAD!
The Egrets and Night Herons have crossed West Road and built nests in homes off Meadow Village Drive and Pearl Lake. They were at the Middlegate pool park for the last three years, until their residence drove them away. The Northmead residence need to ban together to keep them out of our neighborhood next year, like Middlegate did in 2015. The birds will be leaving shortly and will be gone between October and early February, as homeowners we need to do the following: • Trim your trees and remove dead wood. • Thin your tree canopy to allow sunlight between limbs and other trees. • Remove any old (inactive) nests in your trees. • HOA will take care of the two Northmead parks.
GARBAGE CANS MUST BE STORED OUT OF SIGHT! It is a violation of deed restrictions to leave cans in view on non-garbage pick-up days. There is a fine assessed for each violation notice a resident receives. This is a growing problem in our neighborhood. Deed Restriction investigators are going to become more vigilant in citing the homes in violation. You are encouraged to report homes that are chronic violators to Graham Management. A link to contact Graham Management is also on the Copperfield website. You will remain anonymous. Your reports are appreciated.

(NM) DEED RESTRICTIONS
While no one likes receiving a Deed Restriction notice, it’s a necessary evil to keep the neighbor in good repair, which protects everyone’s property values. If you receive a letter and have a question or need additional time to make a repair, please call Graham Management at 281-497-4320. We are here to help.
SOUTHCREEK VILLAGE
Prevention is crucial, egrets, herons and other migratory birds are protected by international treaty, it’s illegal for residents to harm or harass the birds once they lay eggs. Preventing the birds from building nests on residential property or in our parks in the first place is key.
(NM) GARBAGE CANS
Before making improvements or changes that may be effected by our Deed Restrictions, call Graham Management at 281-497-4320. They will advise you and provide the form you will need for approval of your renovation. Please do not put yourself in the unfortunate position of incurring unnecessary costs to rectify a change that was not approved.
(SC) COMMUNITY GARAGE SALE
The Southcreek Community Garage Sale is scheduled to take place on Saturday, November 7th, from 7 AM to 2 PM. Residents who wish to participate should set up in their respective driveways. Please remember to take down any signs you put up after the garage sale. All signs must be picked up by the end of the day. Rain day is scheduled for November 14th.

It allows citizens to report any persons or activities. Any tips can remain anonymous or citizens have the option to disclose their identity. Additional information is available at iwatchharriscounty.com.

(SC) TRASH & RECYCLING PICKUP
Southcreek trash pickup is on Tuesdays and Fridays. Southcreek has backdoor pickup. This means that our trashcans may be placed at the back of our driveway. We do not have to have our trashcans at the curb. Big items such as yard clippings and tree branches should be placed at the curb. Our deed restrictions state that all trash, including grass clippings, cannot be on the curb until 6 PM the night before pickup and your trashcans must be picked up from the curb by 6 PM, the day of pickup. So… you cannot have trash on the curb until Monday and Thursday nights until 6 PM and everything must be removed from the curb by 6 PM on Tuesdays and Fridays. This includes any bags that contain lawn clippings. If you have a lawn service, have them place the bags behind your fence and not leave the clippings on the curb. Our recycling day is Tuesday. Please have your recycling bin at the curb by 7 AM on Tuesdays. Please pick up your recycling by 6 PM on Tuesdays to comply with our deed restrictions.

(WC) NATIONAL NIGHT OUT KUDOS
Many thanks to our 16 wonderful neighbors - Charlotte Woodruff, Ginny Duffy, Roxanne Tiner, Cindy Dunn, Vicki Powers, Cindy Buggs, Rachel McGee, Diana Seynaeve, Whitney Stamper, Sharon Green, William Taeger, Larry Berger, Jeremiah Hatton, Fressia Artola, Bill Schindler and Bonnie Roberts - who volunteered to host a “Westcreek block gathering” at their homes for National Night Out (NNO), which was celebrated on Tuesday, October 6th. Also a big thank you to all the neighbors who took the time to gather and participate in a ‘know your neighbor event.’ At many of the gatherings, sheriff’s deputies stopped by and visited for the purpose of strengthening community bonds and discussing various crime prevention tips. Party hosts were personally presented with a certificate of appreciation from a Sheriff’s Dept. representative. A big thank you goes out to Larry Berger, Virginia Duffy, Janet Gingell and Rollin Recroft for all their efforts in helping Westcreek neighbors prepare for NNO block parties by soliciting donations for party items and raffle prizes. Generous local business donors, which provided party supplies included Target, Krogers and Sprouts. Westcreek Crime Watch Committee also wishes to thank the generous donors who provided the following raffle prizes, which were given out at the Westcreek NNO parties:

Please park vehicles in garages or in driveways. More importantly, keep all vehicles locked and do not leave any items of value inside. Every month unlocked vehicles are targets for easy theft. Seldom are vehicles broken into. Every month the crime report lists items being stolen from unlocked vehicles. The thieves will move to another area if everyone would simply remember to “lock and remove.” Also, if you see something suspicious, say something by calling the Sheriff’s Departments non-emergency phone number 713-2216000 #1. Be sure this number is keyed into your cell phone.

(WC) NOVEMBER GARDENING TIPS
Finally we have cooler weather upon us to enjoy the cool evenings and mornings we have missed all summer long. Insect and fungus damage should still be part of your main considerations as we are moving out of the intense heat and into cooler times. • Insect Control: chinch bugs can still be working to destroy our lawns if we haven’t fully eliminated their presence. Continue to monitor and treat any areas you may suspect chinch bugs may be present. Ortho “Max” or Spectricide “Triazicide” are both good liquid products to utilize. Don’t forget to treat 3 times across a 21 day period to ensure unhatched pests are destroyed upon hatching. • Fungus Control: November is when Brownpatch fungus will really start to take its toll if we fail to treat our lawns properly and scale back on the amount of water applied. Remember, when evening temperatures fall below 60 degrees, this problematic fungus will likely re-appear where you have had it before. The best strategy for limiting and controlling Brownpatch: 1. Change your watering schedule by eliminating any evening watering sessions. Leaving the lawn wet in the evening is an open invitation for Brownpatch to appear. 2. Alter your fertilizer in use to limit the amount of nitrogen to only a “slowrelease” combination. 3. For treatment, Fertilome liquid systemic, Daconil or a double dose or Terrachlor should help stop any apparent signs from growing or increasing. 4. Please - don’t wait until you see the brown rings appear before doing something - treat before you see the telltale signs and avoid the breakout altogether! Remember - it is much easier to prevent Brownpatch than it is to stop/eliminate it. • Fall is for Planting: with the cooler months and the chance for new trees and shrubs to become better established before warmer weather is back, so now is the time to consider planting new trees or ornamentals. If you do choose to add new trees or ornamentals, be sure you enrich the soil with appropriate tree/shrub soil. Be sure you do not use in-ground developed soils for containerized ornamentals. Introducing excessive amounts of fresh hardwood mulch or manure-based material can burn root systems and kill the plant before it can get established - be careful!

• If you moved any seasonal Poinsettias outdoors last winter with the hopes of being able to enjoy them again this holiday season now is the time to move the plants into a container and move indoors, providing at least 14 hours of ABSOLUTE DARKNESS daily for at least 6-8 weeks. You will still need to provide 4-6 hours of sunlight daily, but without the darkness treatment the plant will not develop blooms. • Now is definitely the time for Mums and Pansies - both tolerate the cooler temperatures well and inject a blast of color back into your garden now that the summer annuals begin to wane. Please - enjoy your Thanksgiving Holiday - travel safely if you do so, be thankful and get ready for December holiday festivities!
(WC) BACKYARD GARDEN CLUB
We have started a Backyard Garden Club and the following is what it is all about. Ultimate Goal: • Visit other backyards and/or patios • Informal gathering • Share plants, cuttings or identification of plants • Share gardening tips • Possibly meet once a month and also schedule yard visits - tentatively meet the 2nd Friday of the month at 2 PM • We will schedule 3 yards to visit at that meeting and visit the yards the following week at 6 PM • We will meet at house #1 then give addresses of others at that point This is a learning experience and not a back-yard contest. We just want to view and share our hidden landscaped Backyards. For more info, contact Bill Schindler at wrspo@sbcglobal.net. In Westcreek Village but open to all Villages.

• The Plymouth Pilgrims were the first to celebrate the Thanksgiving in the fall of 1621. • The drink that the Puritans brought with them in the Mayflower was the beer. • The Wampanoag Indians were the people who taught the Pilgrims how to cultivate the land. • The first Thanksgiving celebration lasted three days. • President George Washington issued the first national Thanksgiving Day Proclamation in the year 1789 and again in 1795. • The state of New York officially made Thanksgiving Day an annual custom in 1817. • Sarah Josepha Hale, an editor with a magazine, started a Thanksgiving campaign in 1827 and it was result of her efforts that in 1863 Thanksgiving was observed as a day for national thanksgiving and prayer. • Abraham Lincoln issued a ‘Thanksgiving Proclamation’ on third October 1863 and officially set aside the last Thursday of November as the national day for Thanksgiving. Whereas earlier the presidents used to make an annual proclamation to specify the day when Thanksgiving was to be held. • President Franklin D. Roosevelt restored Thursday before last of November as Thanksgiving Day in the year 1939. He did so to make the Christmas shopping season longer and thus stimulate the economy of the state. • Congress passed an official proclamation in 1941 and declared that now onwards Thanksgiving will be observed as a legal holiday on the fourth Thursday of November every year. • Benjamin Franklin wanted the turkey to be the national bird of the United States. But it was Thomas Jefferson who opposed him. It is believed that Franklin then named the male turkey as ‘tom’ to spite Jefferson. • The annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade tradition began in the 1920’s. • Californians are the largest consumers of turkey in the United States. • When the Pilgrims arrived in North America, the clothing of the Native Americans was made of animal skins (mainly deer skin). • On December 11, 1620 the first Pilgrims (or Puritans, as they were initially known) landed at Plymouth Rock. • By the fall of 1621 only half of the pilgrims, who had sailed on the Mayflower, survived. The survivors, thankful to be alive, decided to give a thanksgiving feast.

CYPRESS CHRISTIAN KINDERGARTENERS ENJOY UMBRELLA PARADE Kindergarteners at Cypress Christian School learned about short vowel sounds. They enjoyed learning through hands-on activities and special projects to complement their curriculum. They also enjoyed a very special Umbrella Parade to celebrate the letter “u.” All four Kindergarten classes paraded through the elementary hallways and out onto the playground with their umbrellas high in the air. As they marched, they made the short “u” sound. Learning phonics is fun! Founded in 2009 by children’s author and public speaker, Melissa M. Williams, READ3zero has embarked on a mission to help share aspects of the literacy and publishing world, influencing the lives of children to learn outside the classroom. One of the primary creative projects at READ3Zero is the annual short-story contest, which emphasizes the concept that reading and writing go hand in hand. The program provides leadership and speaking opportunities to the students after they are published. Children are also allowed to submit drawings for the front and back cover of the book. Organizations, businesses and community members are able to help fund the efforts of READ3Zero by contributing support for future projects. GIRL SCOUTS OF SAN JACINTO COUNCIL COPPER CREEK MEADOWS COMMUNITY
Copper Creek Meadows Community invited troops at all levels to send representatives to our first Girl Planning Board meeting for the year. Girls were asked to present their ideas for events they would like to see held by our Community. They had lots of great ideas! Thank you to all the girls who attended for their suggestions. Girl planning is an important aspect of Girl Scouting and one that began with our founder, Juliette Gordon Low, back in 1912. Juliette Gordon Low’s birthday was on October 31st and many troops celebrate that day with a birthday party or other special event in her honor. A Brownie Try-it dance workshop was hosted by two Cadette Girl Scouts from troop 14289 in October. The Cadettes are members of the Girl Scout Green Starlettes dance and drill team. They held the event as part of their Silver Award project. They will be purchasing new toys for patients at Texas Children’s Hospital. Troop 113017 attended the Compassion Experience at Copperfield Church. Using iPod and head sets, the girls were able to

“I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ?
We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through November. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.

BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA COPPERHEAD DISTRICT
For 100 years, Scouting programs have instilled in youth the values found in the Scout Oath and Scout Law. Today, these values are just as relevant in helping youth grow to their full potential as they were in 1910. Scouting helps youth develop academic skills, self-confidence, ethics, leadership skills, outdoor skills and citizenship skills that influence their adult lives. The Boy Scouts of America provides youth with programs and activities that allow them to: • Try new things. • Provide service to others. • Build self-confidence. • Reinforce ethical standards. Scouting provides youth with a sense that they are important as individuals while promoting activities that lead to personal responsibility and high self-

STANDUP FOR KIDS
ADOPT A US SOLDIER
Adopt A US Soldier is a non-profit organization that seeks volunteers and donors to help show the brave men and women fighting for our freedom that their sacrifices will not go unnoticed. It connects supportive civilians with deployed soldiers and offers a channel by which to communicate encouragement and express gratitude to those serving in the United States Armed Forces. Adopt A US Soldier is sustained by its volunteer workforce located across the United States. After a supporter asked a soldier what they needed, his response was as follows: “No requests, just don’t want to be forgotten.” -LCPL O.J.T. III
How would you feel if you saved a kid’s life? StandUp For Kids is an all volunteer organization dedicated to saving the lives of at-risk and homeless kids through volunteer outreach efforts. Our volunteers search the streets in order to find, stabilize and otherwise help homeless and street kids improve their lives. Every day throughout the US thirteen kids die on the streets from abuse, disease and suicide. According to recent statistics Houston has up to 2,500 kids living on the streets at any given time. Texas has the highest rate of homeless youth in the U.S.
When registering for Adopt A US Soldier your involvement can range from writing letters and sending postcards, to mailing care packages full of items a soldier may need or want. Handwritten letters are most important and meaningful to soldiers. Adopt A US Soldier encourages civilians to adopt a soldier to show your support for those that are making sacrifices for our country. If interested, please go to www.adoptaussoldier.org to register.
StandUp For Kids needs supplies for our Houston program, which provides food, clothing, counseling and a safe environment for the homeless youth of Houston. If you or your organization would like to hold a food or clothing drive for StandUp For Kids please contact me at HeatherE@standupforkids.org to learn more about StandUp For Kids or how you can help visit our website at www.standupforkids.org.

When foster children reach age 18, they are considered independent. That’s difficult for kids who have been wards of the state, with necessities arranged by caseworkers with state funds. Now they’ll have to figure out how to organize themselves and make their money last a whole month. Fortunately, Child protective Services offers them a program to help prepare for independence: Preparation for Adult Living (PAL). The year-long course culminates in an all-day workshop hosted by the National Council for Jewish Women (NCJW). The course is held at Junior Achievement’s BizTown, using computer kiosks sponsored by local businesses. Want to help with PAL or other NCJW programs that help change lives with hands-on community service? Contact info@ncjwhouston.org or see www. ncjwhouston.org.

Food, water, shelter and a soft place to rest is all you need to provide. The “love” just comes naturally. If you have a little room in your heart and in your home (and your family pets are up-to-date on their vaccines and monthly heart worm preventative), then you are who we are looking for! There is no feeling in the world like the unconditional love you’ll receive from a rescued Dachshund, plus the friendships you’ll make when you join the DREAM Team! The more foster homes we have, the more Dachshunds we can save. Please help save a life and consider fostering today!
