(EC) COPPERFIELD NEIGHBORHOOD EGRET INVASION

You may have seen the news about Copperfield and the bird invasion. About three years ago, Middlegate Village of Copperfield started to see large birds like Cattle Egret’s and Blue Herons. Each spring the birds began showing up in higher numbers, leaving a stench and mess after they migrated. In order to deter the birds from returning to their area they spent over $30,000 to reduce the amount of mature live oaks from their park, clean the park area and replant landscaping. Unfortunately, the birds moved no more than a mile away to unsuspecting Copperfield homeowner’s trees. The Problem: Egrets and herons are just a few of the birds that come in. Over 100 birds can come in at one time and they come in waves. The birds will eat all of the neighboring grass; leaving the ground baron, they are extremely noisy, produce a smell from all of the droppings, dead offspring and dead fish that were dropped by the adult birds, they can produce two or more sets of hatchlings in one season. The Law: The birds are a federally protected species while nesting. Migratory birds are protected by international treaty. Once birds begin sitting on nests, eggs are probably present. You cannot kill, harass, move or disturb the birds during nesting season. Once the birds migrate in October, property owners may begin proactive steps to inhibit their return. What Can You Do: Be proactive by discouraging these birds from nesting in your area by trimming your trees and remove dead wood, thin your tree canopy to allow sunlight between limbs and other trees, remove old (inactive) nests. What to watch for: January-March watch for “sentry” birds. They are the first to arrive, looking for good nesting places. Birds: “Sentry” birds, Yellow-crowned night Heron, Cattle Egret, Great Egret, Great Blue Heron, Little Blue Heron, Snowy Egret. Action Plan if you see large birds in your trees: If you see these birds and nesting material in your trees you must take action quickly. Begin scare tactics; use noisemakers, water spray or shine lights at night. Hang “scare eye” balloons or other moving objects in trees. Use long poles, tennis balls or water hoses to disturb early nesting material. Check your trees at least twice a day (morning & evening). Remove the start of any nests. Birds can build nests in just two days and lay an egg on the second day.

(MG) REMINDER FROM THE BIRD COMMITTEE

The bird committee would like to remind everyone to check their trees throughout the winter for places that could use a trimming before bird season begins in 2016. The committee worked tirelessly to prevent the destructive birds from coming back this year. Lets reward their efforts by doing all we can do as residents to make sure we keep the birds from returning next year!

Copperfield

There has recently been a problem with residents parking campers in their driveways for lengthy amounts of time. The following is a copy of the Deed Restrictions with regard to storage of vehicles in Middlegate Village. 1) Commercial Vehicles - There is a two (2) hour time limit for parking of commercial vehicles in the driveway or on the street, unless such vehicle is actively being loaded or unloaded with household furnishings or unless said vehicle was used to transport repair technicians to the property and repairs are being actively made to the property or contents therein. The vehicles must be in operating condition and parked in the driveway when space is available. If parking on the street is the only alternative, vehicle must be parked at least fifty feet from an intersection. If vehicles are not operable, they must be parked within the garage or behind a solid fence. 2) Recreational vehicles - There is a twelve (12) hour time limit for parking of recreational vehicles in the driveway or on the street, unless the vehicle is being actively loaded or unloaded. The vehicles must be in operating condition and parked in the driveway when space is available. If parking on the street is the only alternative, vehicle must be parked at least fifty feet from an intersection. If vehicles are not operable, they must be parked within the garage or behind a solid fence. 3) Personal Vehicles - There is a twenty four (24) hour time limit for parking of personal vehicles in the driveway or on the street. The vehicles must be in operating condition and parked in the driveway when space is available. If parking on the street is the only alternative, vehicle must be parked at least fifty feet from an intersection. If vehicles are not operable, they must be parked within the garage or behind a solid fence.

Northmead Village (NM) EGRETS AND NIGHT HERONS ARE IN NORTHMEAD!

The Egrets and Night Herons have crossed West Road and built nests in homes off Meadow Village Drive and Pearl Lake. They were at the Middlegate pool park for the last three years, until their residence drove them away. The Northmead residence need to ban together to keep them out of our neighborhood next year, like Middlegate did in 2015. The birds will be leaving shortly and will be gone between October and early February, as homeowners we need to do the following: • Trim your trees and remove dead wood. • Thin your tree canopy to allow sunlight between limbs and other trees. • Remove any old (inactive) nests in your trees. • HOA will take care of the two Northmead parks. Prevention is crucial, egrets, herons and other migratory birds are protected by international treaty, it’s illegal for residents to harm or harass the birds once they lay eggs. Preventing the birds from building nests on residential property or in our parks in the first place is key.

(NM) GARBAGE CANS

GARBAGE CANS MUST BE STORED OUT OF SIGHT! It is a violation of deed restrictions to leave cans in view on non-garbage pick-up days. There is a fine assessed for each violation notice a resident receives. This is a growing problem in our neighborhood. Deed Restriction investigators are going to become more vigilant in citing the homes in violation. You are encouraged to report homes that are chronic violators to Graham Management. A link to contact Graham Management is also on the Copperfield website. You will remain anonymous. Your reports are appreciated.

(NM) HOME IMPROVEMENT REQUIREMENTS

Before making improvements or changes that may be effected by our Deed Restrictions, call Graham Management at 281-497-4320. They will advise you and provide the form you will need for approval of your renovation. Please do not put yourself in the unfortunate position of incurring unnecessary costs to rectify a change that was not approved.

Southcreek Village (SC) OUR CONDOLENCES

(NM) FALL COMMUNITY GARAGE SALE

On behalf of the Southcreek community, the Board of Directors would like to express our sincere condolences to the Goforth family.

(NM) DEED RESTRICTIONS

During the first week of October, our community maintenance group, Pampered Lawns, will be spreading fire ant poison throughout the parks and common areas. It is recommended that residents also broadcast on their property. This will give the ants no safe haven or place to run.

The Northmead Village Fall Community Garage Sale will be held on Saturday, October 3, 2015 from 7 AM until 3 PM. Signs will be posted throughout the community one week prior to the event. Residents who wish to participate should set-up in their respective driveways.

While no one likes receiving a Deed Restriction notice, it’s a necessary evil to keep the neighbor in good repair, which protects everyone’s property values. If you receive a letter and have a question or need additional time to make a repair, please call Graham Management at 281-497-4320. We are here to help.

(WC) NATIONAL NIGHT OUT KUDOS

Many thanks to our thirteen wonderful neighbors who have volunteered to host a “Westcreek block gathering” at their homes for National Night Out (NNO) which will be celebrated on Tuesday, October 6th. Also a big thank you to all the neighbors who will take the time to gather and participate in a ‘know your neighbor event.’ At many of the gatherings, sheriff’s deputies will stop by and visit with as many groups as they can for the purpose of strengthening community bonds and discussing various crime prevention tips. A big thank you goes out to Larry Berger, Virginia Duffy, Janet Gingell and Rollin Recroft for all their efforts in helping Westcreek neighbors prepare for NNO block parties by soliciting donations for party items and raffle prizes. Generous donors include Harbor Freight Tools, HEB, Willie’s Restaurants, Chuy’s, La Madeleine, Outback Steakhouse, Johnny Carino’s, John Eagle Honda, Graham Management, Copperfield Automotive, Chili’s, Krogers, Staples, Sherrie Marie’s Hair Salon, Janet Gingell, Target, Sprouts, Ace Hardware and an anonymous donor. On Oct. 5th, banners will be posted at the entrances to Westcreek to remind neighbors to come out on Oct. 6th and meet your neighbors. Christina and Philip Berger have volunteered to post and take down the banners. A big thank you for their time and efforts. It’s not too late to host a gathering. If interested, contact Larry.Berger@ energytransfer.com. You do not have to be a block captain to host this event.

(WC) HALLOWEEN SAFETY

This month children will be out celebrating Halloween by trick-or-treating. When driving please be on the lookout for children who may be crossing the street. Please talk to your children about these safety issues - look both ways before crossing the street, go as a group with a trusted adult and never alone, walk don’t run from house to house, never enter homes of strangers, wear a reflective costume or add reflective strips, use a flashlight to help you see and to help others see you.

(WC) CRIME PREVENTION

If you cannot keep your vehicle in the garage, then please keep your vehicles locked at all times and remove all valuables. Vehicles are broken into and articles are taken each month in Westcreek and most of the time, vehicles were left unlocked. Truck tailgates are being targeted as an easy theft. The owner of a pickup should park the truck in a garage or back the pick up as close to the garage door as possible. Tailgates are easy to steal and bring in lots of money in the resale market. Be aware and alert for suspicious persons and activities. Don’t hesitate to call the Sheriff Dept.’s non-emergency number 713-221-6000 (#1) - remember to program this number into your cell phone.

Meetings - 2nd Monday of every month at 6:30 PM Location - Forest Heights Pool Meeting Room The Westcreek Landscape Committee meets on the 2nd Monday every month. If you are interested in helping make a difference in our neighborhood and would like to become part of the group, we welcome and encourage your attendance and hope to see you there - there is room for you! Comments, suggestions or questions regarding common areas or other landscape topics are always welcome. Please contact Graham Management Inc. at 281-497-4320 - which will forward your message, request or information to the committee. A member will then get back with you to answer your questions or concerns.

(WC) YARD OF THE MONTH

(WC) SHERIFF DEPARTMENT INFORMATION

If you notice anything suspicious in the neighborhood, report it directly to the non-emergency Sheriff Department’s number at 713-221-6000 # 1. Take a minute to program this number into the cell phone of each family member. The more eyes, the better the crime prevention. Be a good neighbor and remember to park your vehicles in the garage or in your driveway, especially at night. And remember to keep your vehicles locked at all times and remove valuables. These simple steps not only would reduce crime in the neighborhood significantly, but would also serve as a deterrent. These are crimes of opportunity. No opportunity, no crime. To be better informed about the crime in our area, simply log onto www. crimereports.com and provide local address. The Harris County Sheriff’s Dept. updates this site to inform the public of the crimes committed. This site is easy to use and is a vital tool for keeping us aware of what is occurring in our neighborhood.

WESTCREEK LANDSCAPE COMMITTEE

The Yard of the Month program completed another fun and challenging year with the September selections. September winners were as follows: 1st: 7610 Granite Ridge 2nd: 17907 Lone River Ct. 3rd: 17823 Mossey Ridge

(WC) HUMMINGBIRDS

This is the time of year when we will begin to see more hummingbirds. If you wish to have multiple visits to your home please remember the following; 1. Place a feeder outside in a well-shaded area, otherwise fermentation will occur. 2. You do not need to purchase a special feeder mix, simply mix your own by adding 1 part hot water to 4 parts white granular sugar. DO NOT add honey, red food coloring or artificial sweeteners. 3. If you have more than one feeder, place secondary feeders so that each is not visible to the other as hummingbirds are territorial during feeding and will “dominate,” preventing others from making visits.

October 2015

4. Keep the feeder clean and well stocked - change the solution twice a week in warmer weather or if it becomes cloudy if you want the feeders to be visited.

(WC) OCTOBER GARDENING TIPS LAWN & TREE CARE

1. Insect Control - You should definitely consider applying a fall treatment to eliminate mosquitoes and especially cinch bugs to your lawn and garden areas. Cinch bugs promise to be very problematic with the intense heat we saw in July and early August, with early October it is still not yet cool enough to see significant population declines. 2. Got weeds and want to save money and create the BEST weed control yourself? Mix 1 gal. Vinegar, 2 cups Epson salt and ¼ cup of Dawn dish soap (blue) in a portable sprayer. This is VERY fast-acting and 100% naturel. Try it! 3. Aphids may be seen in greater numbers, especially upon hibiscus in October as the temperatures begin to cool a bit. Utilizing all-natural soapy water solution works great and does not damage the plant.

d. Flowers - Begonias as well as impatiens will continue to do well in shaded areas as the temperature and lighting is still ideal. Lantana as well as daisies and some angelonia varieties that promote fall color (yellow and orange) will also do well in areas with intense sunlight. e. If you are thinking ahead to next spring already in regards to all things that bloom, October is the ideal time to lay Bluebonnet and Indian Paintbrush seed. Seedlings need to take root and establish a root base in the fall and getting the seeds to germinate is necessary to achieve this. Getting seed into the ground before soil temperatures fall below 70 degrees is imperative. If the seed laid down does not have a chance to germinate it may do so when temperatures rise in the spring, but fall seeding will usually produce a more robust showing. f. Fruits/Nuts - If you have Banana, Pecan, Lime, Satsuma, Avocado or Papaya trees, October is harvest time. g. Apply winterizer fertilizer to your lawn now in order to promote healthy and developed root growth in the cooler months, leading to a thicker lawn come next spring. Apply a 2 in 1 herbicide such as Amaze, Betasan or Dimension, Barricade or Portrait pre-emergent for grassy weed control.

4. Fungus Control - As was stated in September, October will really bring on the ideal conditions for an increase in Brownpatch fungus, especially when evening temperatures fall below 60 degrees. Don’t get caught with rings around your lawn:

Westcreek will be performing an ant treatment in all our common areas on October 5th & 6th. It would be a great time for everyone to treat for ants at the same time. Please mark this date on your calendar to join in and help move the ants out of Westcreek! This will be in time to keep ants off our trick-ortreaters on Halloween.

a. Change your watering schedule by eliminating any evening watering sessions if programmed. b. Alter your fertilizer in use to limit the amount of nitrogen to only a “slowrelease” combination. c. For treatment, Fertilome liquid systemic, Daconil or a double dose or Terrachlor should help stop any apparent signs from growing or increasing. A liquid treatment works best once fungus signs are apparent or obvious.

Speaking of Halloween, this tradition brings a flood of treat-seekers to our neighborhood. Do not place a carved pumpkin outdoors any sooner than 1 week before the holiday - any sooner and the warm weather will quickly decompose your work of art. Also be sure that limbs, shrubs and other growth areas near front porches and sidewalks are properly trimmed to prevent pedestrian accidents.

LCHS MARCHING BAND PERFORMED FOR THE MIRACLE LEAGUE ON OPENING DAY

The Langham Creek High School Marching Band performed for the Miracle League opening day game on September 12th at the brand new Langham Creek Family YMCA J.E. and L.E. Mabee Adaptive Sports Complex. The Miracle League Sports program is designed specifically for children with disabilities. The Miracle League removes the barriers that keep children with mental and physical disabilities off of the fields and allows them to experience playing as part of a team. One of the main barriers for these children is the natural grass field used in conventional youth leagues. The Miracle League plays on a custom-designed, rubberized turf field that accommodates wheel chairs and other devices while helping to prevent injuries. The Lobo Band is very active in our community and we are honored to be able to perform for the 1st game at the brand new Langham Creek YMCA J.E. and L.E. Mabee Adaptive Sports Complex. This is a wonderful addition to our community. We encourage everyone to stop by and support this beautiful facility!

COPPER CREEK MEADOWS COMMUNITY

Girl Scouts from Copper Creek Meadows have been enjoying all kinds of summer activities. Girl Scout Junior Troop 16468 from Birkes Elementary school has been having an especially busy summer. The girls attended the Bull’s Eye Resident camp and also the Girl Scout Day Camp held at the Houston Farm and Ranch Club. They also enjoyed a night of roller skating and a troop circus visit to the Ringling Brothers-Barnum and Bailey Circus. A “Pottery Fun” workshop was an opportunity to explore a new art form. The girls finished off their troop summer fun with a Space Center Camp-In. Now that school has started, they will be working on Journey project priming and painting metal trash containers at Birkes Elementary. It sounds like these very active and enthusiastic Girl Scouts will be adding quite a collection of patches to their vests and sashes! Many thanks to all those volunteers, Program Aides and Camp Aides who helped to make the Jersey Village Twilight Camp a success! Copper Creek Meadows Community is a part of the Cy-Fair East, Region Four area. The region has a Rallyhood site and Facebook page for Cadette through Ambassador Girl Scouts to provide additional opportunities for our older girls. Check with your troop leader for more information. Cadette Girl Scouts in Area Four will be planning and hosting a Brownie Quest Journey workshop in November in order to earn their Leadership in Action award.

Troop 16399 has had several projects to raise funds for the Houston SPCA as they work toward achieving their Bronze Award. Troop 16503 planned their year of events and ideas at their first troop meeting for the new school year. They are also planning to start work on their Bronze Award. Copper Creek Meadows Community already has a Leader/Daughter event on the schedule for December 5th. This will be held locally. Be on the lookout for more information! Our Fall Product sale began on September 11th. In person order taking continues through October 4th. Girls can continue to sell online until October 25th through the girls’ online storefront. Three new products this year are Black Forest Trail Mix, Dark Chocolate Sea Salt Caramels and Honey Mustard Pretzel Mix. Leaders who attended our community summit meeting in September had a chance to sample all those delicious treats. Everyone agreed it was a great incentive for coming to the meeting! Thanks to Crystal Lawrenz for serving as our Fall Product Manager! Copper Creek Meadows Community would like to thank Andrel Bridgewater, Jennifer Aldaco and all those involved in our Rally and other recruitment efforts. We especially thank those Girl Scout troops and their leaders who provided activities (and a chance to see what Girl Scouts do!) at our Rally nights. Our Rally Nights have been continuing throughout September and the first week of October. We have been forming new troops and placing girls in existing troops. If you were unable to attend one of the Rally Nights, it is not too late to sign up! Girl Scouting is open to all girls ages 5 (must be in kindergarten) through 18 who are willing to accept the Girl Scout Promise and Law. Girls may join at any level and no previous Scouting experience is required. Copper Creek Meadows Community serves girls in the residence areas for the elementary schools listed below, as well as the corresponding middle and high schools. Our elementary schools are: Birkes, Fiest, Hairgrove, Horne, Kirk, Lee, Lieder, Lowery, Metcalf, Owens, Tipps, Wilson, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, Texas Christian School and Christian Life Center. Home schooled and private school students are always welcome. Older girls whose schedules do not allow for participation in a troop or group may register as “Juliettes” or “individually registered girls.” Don’t forget that we always need leaders and other adult volunteers! We can’t have Girl Scout troops without them. You don’t need to be a super hero or a park ranger- you don’t even have to have children! You do need to have an interest in working with girls, pass a background check and take some training. Only a little is required to get started, but a lot more is available when you are ready for it. Please contact Marlo Folwell - 713-854-9426 (marlo.folwell@c-a-m.com for more information. You may also check out the Girl Scouts of San Jacinto Council website, www.gssjc.org or call the Council office at 713-292-0300.

The Boy Scouts of America provides youth with programs and activities that allow them to: • Try new things. • Provide service to others. • Build self-confidence. • Reinforce ethical standards.

“I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ?

We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through October. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.

FOSTER CHILDREN: PREPARATION FOR ADULT LIVING (PAL)

When foster children reach age 18, they are considered independent. That’s difficult for kids who have been wards of the state, with necessities arranged by caseworkers with state funds. Now they’ll have to figure out how to organize themselves and make their money last a whole month. Fortunately, Child protective Services offers them a program to help prepare for independence: Preparation for Adult Living (PAL). The year-long course culminates in an all-day workshop hosted by the National Council for Jewish Women (NCJW). The course is held at Junior Achievement’s BizTown, using computer kiosks sponsored by local businesses. Want to help with PAL or other NCJW programs that help change lives with hands-on community service? Contact info@ncjwhouston.org or see www. ncjwhouston.org.

monthly heart worm prevention. There is no long-term commitment required. Food, water, shelter and a soft place to rest is all you need to provide. The “love” just comes naturally. If you have a little room in your heart and in your home (and your family pets are up-to-date on their vaccines and monthly heart worm preventative), then you are who we are looking for! There is no feeling in the world like the unconditional love you’ll receive from a rescued Dachshund, plus the friendships you’ll make when you join the DREAM Team! The more foster homes we have, the more Dachshunds we can save. Please help save a life and consider fostering today! Questions? Please send us an email to: Contact-Us@DreamDachs.org and a volunteer will respond to you right away with all the information you need! Ready to Foster? Please visit our website at: www.dreamdachs.org and click on the FOSTER tab to fill out our online Foster Application.
