STAYING POSITIVE DURING THE HOLIDAY SEASON

‘Tis the season to be jolly, but all too often we find ourselves feeling stressed out rather than joyful this time of year. Though the holiday season can be stressful at times, it is important to remember the true reason for the season and to stay positive.

It seems year after year Thanksgiving is the kickoff to a season of greed and discontentment. Just hours after finishing the Thanksgiving meal, people rush out to begin the frenzy of holiday shopping, overspending, and complaining. So many people spend the holidays comparing themselves to others and are disappointed when they feel like they don’t measure up to those around them. We complain about the lack of square footage and not enough oven space while preparing a feast for our families, meanwhile forgetting that millions of people are going to bed hungry and homeless each night.

One excellent way to stay positive during the holiday season is to get involved with a local charity. Whether you spend a day feeding the homeless or giving out toys to local children, seeing how other people live will open your eyes to how truly fortunate you are. Getting the entire family involved can be a wonderful learning opportunity for children. Seeing so many kids who don’t get presents makes it awfully hard to complain about not getting exactly what you wanted on Christmas morning.

Another key practice to staying positive is to stop comparing yourself to others. Everyone has a different idea of how the holidays should be. Don’t feel disheartened when your family doesn’t decorate as elaborately as the house next door. After all, happiness is not related to the size of your Christmas tree or the number of presents under it.

Remember the true meaning of the season and don’t get overwhelmed by the details associated with this time of year. The heart of the holidays is love and peace. Rather than getting stressed out by holiday traffic, long lines at the mall, or maxing out your credit card, focus on showing love and compassion to the people around you. Shopping during the holiday season can present unique danger. Taking a few prevention measures can help keep your holiday season joyous.

The holiday season is a time when busy people can become careless and vulnerable to theft and other holiday crime. The following tips from the Los Angeles Police Department Crime Prevention Section can help you be more careful, prepared and aware during the holiday season.

1. Shop during daylight hours whenever possible. If you must shop at night, go with a friend or family member.

2. Dress casually and comfortably.

3. Avoid wearing expensive jewelry.

4. Do not carry a purse or wallet, if possible.

5. Always carry your driver’s license or identification along with necessary cash, checks and/or a credit card you expect to use.

6. Even though you are rushed and thinking about a thousand things, stay alert to your surroundings.

7. Avoid carrying large amounts of cash.

8. Pay for purchases with a check or credit card when possible.

9. Keep cash in your front pocket.

10. Notify the credit card issuer immediately if your credit card is lost, stolen or misused.

11. Keep a record of all of your credit card numbers in a safe place at home.

The Varsity Texas Christian Tiger Football Team is shining bright in more than one way. Texas Christian has been raising money and building a new football field with lights and seating in order to play under Friday night lights.

In the fifth year of having an FFA program, Faith West Academy went to the Harris County Fair (October 13th-17th) well prepared and came home with scholarships, belt buckle, ribbons, trophies and merchandise. ONE KATY STUDENT WINS WRITING CONTEST - READ3ZERO

On Saturday, November 14th, the Houston non-profit literacy organization, READ3Zero, honored one Katy student at a memorable Luncheon and Book Signing event for this year’s winners of the “I Write” contest and celebrated the organization’s sixth year. The student is Sachi Khemka from Taylor High School. The Awards Ceremony offered individual recognition in the form of a certificate of excellence to each student author and illustrator followed by the Literacy Luncheon and Book Signing with Honorees, Neil and Maria Bush, co-chairs to the Barbara Bush Literacy Foundation, Luncheon co-chairs Michael Pearce and Matt Burrus, emceed by Deborah Duncan of Great Day Houston. The luncheon was held at the Hilton Americas located at 1600 Lamar Street, Houston, TX 77010.

Williams, READ3Zero has embarked on a mission to help share aspects of the literacy and publishing world, influencing the lives of children to learn outside the classroom. FIRST ANNUAL WOMEN’S QUARTER MARATHON EVENT

January 9, 2016 The 2016 Women’s Quarter Marathon is a women’s-only race to empower women and young girls through fitness and a healthy lifestyle. The route will start at Central Green Park, run through Cinco Ranch and back to Central Green Park where the post-race party will take place. The distance is a quarter of a marathon, which is 6.55 miles. The Mini-Quarter Marathon is 1.25 miles and is designed for girls under the age of 13 who also want to join the movement. Registration opened September 15, 2015 for this new Houston running event.

Houston Repertoire Ballet (HRB), Houston’s premier pre-professional ballet company celebrates its 20th anniversary season, beginning with its 14th annual performance series of The Nutcracker, featuring professional guest artists Elizabeth Keller and Jared Matthews, both HRB alumni, as the Sugar Plum Fairy and Cavalier, with the Cypress Philharmonic directed by Glynnes Lanthier.

“What’s wrong with this picture?” is the playful theme and question attached to each show in Houston Family Arts Center’s (HFAC) 2015-2016 season.

The Titmouse Club is a nature program for children ages 2 ½ to 5 sponsored by the Houston Audubon Docent Guild. The program is offered every Tuesday and Wednesday morning, 10 to 11 AM, from mid-September until mid-May at the Edith L. Moore Nature Sanctuary, 440 Wilchester Boulevard.

Owl prowls begin with a lively program on owls including an opportunity to meet live, rehabilitated owls followed by a walk in the woods in search of wild owls. 43RD ANNUAL HOLIDAY ON THE PLAZA

Join us December 5th for a family classic. Holiday on the Plaza is partnering with Katy Market Days for A Katy Old-Fashioned Christmas. The events will start at noon and the official lighting of the City Christmas Tree will begin at 6 PM at Harvest Plaza. We have been performing in the Houston area for over 38 years. We prepare two types of shows each year; a Christmas show with old favorites, but always a new fun tune including props, narratives and choreography. In addition to their weekly work in the arena, many of our volunteers donate their time and talents at fund-raising events such as our annual Ride-A-Thon and the yearly Trailblazers Luncheon. Volunteers are on hand during the NARHA on-site certification and annual SIRE Show-Off and volunteers are vital to our Clients’ successes at the Top Hands Horse Show, during the Houston Rodeo and competition at the regional and state Special Olympics.

Therapeutic horseback riding creates a bond of success between the rider and their horse. Volunteers are their own personal cheering section and the instructor is their mentor and coach. Clients become more empowered and better equipped to fully live their lives, each day.

How would you feel if you saved a kid’s life? StandUp For Kids is an all volunteer organization dedicated to saving the lives of at-risk and homeless kids through volunteer outreach efforts. Our volunteers search the streets in order to find, stabilize and otherwise help homeless and street kids improve their lives. Every day throughout the US thirteen kids die on the streets from abuse, disease and suicide. According to recent statistics Houston has up to 2,500 kids living on the streets at any given time. Texas has the highest rate of homeless youth in the U.S. StandUp For Kids needs supplies for our Houston program, which provides food, clothing, counseling and a safe environment for the homeless youth of Houston. Katy Area Ride Service (KARS) is looking for your assistance in transporting seniors in need of personal (hair salon, bank, classes, volunteering, visiting a loved one, taking a pet to the vet) and occasional medical rides. One third of the older adults in your neighborhood live with this loss of independence daily. Rides are provided in your personal vehicles to passengers who are age 65+ and ambulatory (not wheelchair bound, may use walking aids). Time commitment is flexible and you choose the Katy territory in which you want to drive. Volunteers do not provide rides that go east of Barker Cypress, north of Clay Road, west of FM 1463 or south of Bellaire Blvd at the Grand Parkway.

Benefits to Volunteer Drivers include the opportunity to help seniors retain independent living, dignity and freedom. Drivers tell us the day(s) and times they are able to drive. Drivers choose if they wait for the senior or return later to pick them up. Drivers must be between 21 years of age and 78 years of age with a good driving record, pass a background check and show proof of insurance coverage (state minimums) as required by the State of Texas.
