HOW TO REUSE, RECYCLE AND GREEN YOUR AFTER CHRISTMAS WASTE

Want to get a P.H.D. in what to do with your P.H.W.? (That’s short for postholiday waste in case you didn’t know.) While you may not have heard of the term (we kind of just made it up), we’re pretty sure you know what we’re talking about – the crumpled wads of gift wrap, the withering tree, that sweater from Aunt Mabel that was so ugly that it made a baby cry. Don’t worry if you’ve experienced any of these symptoms, however – P.H.W isn’t contagious, and there’s a quick cure – read on to check out our 5 easy tips for what to do with all that stuff after Christmas! 1. HAVE A SWAP PARTY You may not be in love with the fringed, mesh muscle shirt that one of your over-zealous co-workers gave you, but someone else might go gaga over it! Planning a swap party is simple – just invite a few favorite friends to bring over their unwanted gifts, serve some yummy snacks and beverages, and let the trading begin! For an added dose of excitement, play the classic gift-switching game White Elephant.

3. DONATE UNWANTED PRESENTS The most generous way to discard of unwanted toys, clothes and electronics after the holidays is also the easiest. Donate to local shelters, charities or Goodwill. Dropping items off on the way to do errands is a cinch and in many cases, pickups can be arranged free of charge. 4. RECYCLE OLD ELECTRONICS Before you trash your old TV, mp3 player or computer to make way for your newly acquired goodies, consider how dangerous e-waste is for the environment and for human beings. Check out the EPA’s page (www. epa.gov/recycle) on how to ﬁnd e-cycling locations to dispose of your electronics safely and maybe even get you a discount on some new ones! 5. RECYCLE GIFT WRAP AND YOUR CHRISTMAS TREE This one’s a no-brainer but it still rings true. Saving and reusing your gift wrap as well as recycling your tree are simple steps you can take towards battling P.H.W. In addition to the post-holiday slump, not being able to keep your resolutions by February, March or even late January may increase your anxiety. If, for example, your aim is to exercise more frequently, schedule three or four days a week at the gym instead of seven. If you would like to eat healthier, try replacing dessert with something else you enjoy, like fruit or yogurt, instead of seeing your diet as a form of punishment. CHANGE ONE BEHAVIOR AT A TIME Unhealthy behaviors develop over the course of time. Thus, replacing unhealthy behaviors with healthy ones requires time. Don’t get overwhelmed and think that you have to reassess everything in your life. Instead, work toward changing one thing at a time.

GARDENING TIPS FOR JANUARY

• Birds: Provide food and fresh water. More birds die from lack of water than from lack of food. • Cacti: Semi-dormant now. Reduce watering. • Camellias: Plants may be moved. Pick up and discard fallen blooms. • Cultivation: Changes in design may now be made, new beds dug and old ones rebuilt. Correct defects in drainage. Incorporate gypsum into heavy soils: repeat in three weeks. Dig granite dust, rock phosphate and quantities of organic matter into soil. Allow time for settling before planting. • Fertilize: Daylilies, spuria, Louisiana and bearded irises with complete fertilizer. Give strawberries 1 teaspoon ammonium sulfate, keeping six inches away from plant. Fertilize pansies with manure tea or blood meal. Water in. • Fruits: Plant fruit trees. Mulch ﬁgs with grass or straw to prevent freeze damage to crown. • House Plants: Water, when surface soil is crumbly dry. Wash dust off leaves to open pores. Mist often. Inspect for diseases and insects. Reduce water for poinsettias. • Lawns: Remove thatch aerate, and feed with low nitrogen mixture. • Pests: For petal blight prevention, spray azaleas and camellias as ﬂowers open. Spray for scale with dormant oil solution if temperature will be above

35˚ and below 85˚ for next 48 hours. Always read and heed manufacturer’s directions before spraying. • Propagation: Ivy cuttings root easily this month and next. Root cuttings of shrubs in mixture of loam and coarse sand; keep damp and semi-shaded until rooted. • Prune: Fruit trees in advance of new growth. Prune to groom and shape. Do not remove too much. Remove dead wood from trees and shrubs before spring buds swell, but do not prune spring bloomers. Prune crape myrtles. Prune nandina and others of similar growth habit by cutting unwanted canes out at base of plant. • Roses: Annual pruning about the middle of February, just before the spring buds break. To prevent later appearance of disease in the old beds, keep garden clean of debris and weeds. Complete preparation of new beds for roses. • Transplanting: January is one of the best months to transplant woody plants, both evergreen and deciduous, especially trees. Energy will be expended on roots instead of foliage. Learn ultimate size and cultural needs of tree or plant before buying. Consider dwarf varieties to avoid crowding later. Group plants of similar cultural needs. Do not work wet soil. Assure good drainage. Keep plants moist. • Vegetables: Prepare beds, preferably raised for drainage, with about 50% humus, including rotted manure. • Winter Protection: Expect freeze any time; plan for protection of tender plants. Water. Remove coverings, particularly plastic, when temperature rises. Protect low plants with dry leaves, pine needles or soil mulch, but remove when weather warms.

FBA CELEBRATES VETERANS DAY

First Baptist Academy (FBA) students, faculty and parents gathered to honor Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine and Coast Guard veterans who served in times of war or peace at Houston’s First Baptist Church. Veterans and their guests enjoyed a continental breakfast before being escorted to the Worship Center flanked on either side by walls of admiring students. Featured speaker retired Colonel Tom Wilson’s words of courage and sacrifice were followed by gifts of gratitude to the veterans in the form of music, poems and songs presented by the Middle School Concert Band and PK-8th grade representatives. Wilson, a decorated 30-year Air Force civil engineering officer served at Holloman Air Force Base in New Mexico, Ramstein Air Base, Germany, Hurlburt Field, Florida and in Operation Desert Storm. Wilson is currently the Director of Passport To Lead, Houston Christian High School’s signature leadership program.

KATY ISD HONORED BY COLLEGE BOARD

Katy ISD is one of 425 school districts in the U.S. and Canada being honored by the College Board with placement on the 6th Annual AP® District Honor Roll for increasing access to Advanced Placement (AP) course work while simultaneously maintaining or increasing the percentage of students earning scores of 3 or higher on AP Exams. Reaching these goals indicates that the District is successfully identifying motivated, academically prepared students who are likely to benefit from rigorous AP course work. Since 2014, the number of Katy ISD students participating in AP exams increased by 13 percent and more than 7,700 students earned a 3 or higher on these exams. Inclusion on the 6th Annual AP District Honor Roll is based on the examination of three years of AP data, from 2013 to 2015, looking across 34 AP Exams, including world language and culture. SUPERINTENDENT CELEBRATED STUDENT AND STAFF ACCOMPLISHMENTS

In November, Katy ISD Superintendent Alton Frailey spoke to hundreds of Katy community members, dignitaries and staff during his annual State of the District Address. Along with a snapshot of the District’s accomplishments and current enrollment growth, Frailey shared with attendees an update on 2014 bond projects, as well as his vision for the future of the District.

During the address, Frailey shared some of the District’s major accomplishments, such as being recognized on the College Board AP Honor Roll for increasing access to AP course work and increasing the percentage of students earning scores of 3 or higher, and being recognized as the 57th largest district in the nation. During the 2014-2015 school year, Katy ISD had more than 60 students named semiﬁnalists in the National Merit Scholarship Program, 85 student athletes that signed letters of intent to play sports at colleges and universities across the nation and the Class of 2015 graduates accepted more than $21 million in scholarships. Attendees also enjoyed special guest speakers Chuck Brawner, Mayor Pro Tem of the City of Katy; Lance LaCour, President and CEO of the Katy Area Economic Development Council; Ann Hodge, President and CEO of the Katy Area Chamber of Commerce and Carol Adams, author of ‘Historic Katy, An Illustrated History’ and former City of Katy Councilmember.

The first evaluation will be Monday, Tuesday and Thursday Nights, February 22nd, 23rd and 25th, between 5-6:30 PM. The last evaluation will be Saturday, February 27th between 9-11 AM. It only takes a few minutes for us to run them through the drills and then we will contact each player the week before they begin practices. After Monday, February 29th, we cannot guarantee a place on a team. They will practice for one hour a week on a Monday, Tuesday, Thursday or Friday. FIRST ANNUAL WOMEN’S QUARTER MARATHON EVENT - JANUARY 9, 2016

The 2016 Women’s Quarter Marathon is a women’s-only race to empower women and young girls through fitness and a healthy lifestyle. The route will start at Central Green Park, run through Cinco Ranch and back to Central Green Park where the post-race party will take place. The distance is a quarter of a marathon, which is 6.55 miles. The Mini-Quarter Marathon is 1.25 miles and is designed for girls under the age of 13 who also want to join the movement. Registration opened September 15, 2015 for this new Houston running event. Girls Inc. of Greater Houston’s mission is to inspire all girls to be strong, smart and bold by developing programs of informal education that empowers girls to live and succeed in an inequitable world. We have been performing in the Houston area for over 38 years. We prepare two types of shows each year; a Christmas show with old favorites, but always a new fun tune including props, narratives and choreography. Our regular show this year is titled “Through the Years” We are singing songs from 1900 and every decade after that. GRACE NOTES

Singers, dancers and Instrumentalists are invited to join the “Grace Notes” a performing group which shares music with the elderly in retirement homes, Alzheimer’s and nursing facilities and community events. We sing a combination of secular, patriotic and sacred music. We also sing once a month on Sunday morning for the congregation of St. Peter’s UMC. We rehearse during the school year on Tuesday mornings at 9:30 AM at St. Peter’s UMC. Babysitting is provided. Tuesday mornings are also our “outing” days to perform in the community. Harris County ESD 48 Fire Department was formed on August 17, 2015 and assumed the role of emergency service provider in the territory covered by Emergency Services District #48 (ESD 48). “We are very proud of the fact that almost 95% of the active personnel from the previous fire department chose to join us creating a ‘Fire Department of the future,’” said Fire Chief Hevey. HCESD 48 Fire Department is a true combination fire department staffed 24/7 with full-time, part-time and volunteer personnel. PLANTING THE RIGHT TREE IN THE RIGHT PLACE

CenterPoint Energy understands that the responsible planting of trees is a way to care for our environment and beautify our community, yet we are also committed to the safe and reliable delivery of electricity. Our professional tree pruning program is integrated into our daily operations to help make this possible. Trees that grow close to CenterPoint Energy’s electrical poles and lines will be pruned by a professional tree trimming company under contract with CenterPoint Energy. Any vegetation greater than 10 feet in height will be removed from high-voltage transmission line rights-of-way. Palm trees growing near power lines create unique issues. Unlike other trees, palms grow in a straight, vertical line, with a single growing point at the top of the tree. Because of this single-growth point, normal pruning techniques are not effective. With most trees, crews are able to direct the growth away from power lines using proper pruning techniques, but growth of palm trees cannot be redirected. If you choose to include palm trees in your landscape, CenterPoint Energy recommends a planting distance of 20 - 40 feet to reduce the risk of windblown fronds contacting power lines. Consumers should plant palm trees far enough away from power lines that no part of the tree ever grows within 10 feet of the line. CenterPoint Energy encourages you to plant the “Right Tree in the Right Place” by thinking about the mature height of a tree and its distance from power lines before planting. Children’s Book Week - January 24th-30th Every Fort Bend County baby born during this week may receive a special baby book bag, courtesy of the Friends of Fort Bend County Library. Each bag contains a book, a bib, a special certiﬁcate, a list of suggested reading for children and information on parenting and on library services. Baby book bags will be given to babies born during that week at Oak Bend Medical Center in Richmond, Memorial Hermann Sugar Land Hospital and Methodist Sugar Land Hospital, but ALL Fort Bend County babies who are born during Children’s Book Week are eligible to receive one, while supplies last. Families of Fort Bend babies born at other locations during Children’s Book Week should call the Youth Services department at 281-633-4762 to receive their book bag. Family Reading Club - January 24th-March 5th This six-week program is designed to encourage families to read, learn and have fun together. Families participate in the program by reading books and completing optional “challenges” that can be done at home. All Fort Bend County families are eligible to participate. Families who complete the program by reading 36 books or for 6 hours - 6 books per week or for 60 minutes per week - are eligible to receive a book bag for the family and will have their named entered into a drawing for a $50 dining gift card, donated by the Friends of the Library. Each branch library will have a drawing for the gift card on March 7th. A single registration is required for each participating family. An adult (parent or guardian) is asked to register the family online by going to the library’s website (www.fortbend.lib.tx.us) and clicking on the “Family Reading Club Sign-Up” image, which will become available January 24th. Families may also register at one of the libraries in the Fort Bend County library system. Upon registering, families will then have their own online page on which to record their books or reading time. There is no charge to join the Family Reading Club. Equine-assisted activities improve physical balance and coordination, mental acuity, emotional stability and social interactions. At SIRE, we see miracles on horseback happen every day. STANDUP FOR KIDS

How would you feel if you saved a kid’s life? StandUp For Kids is an all volunteer organization dedicated to saving the lives of at-risk and homeless kids through volunteer outreach efforts. Our volunteers search the streets in order to ﬁnd, stabilize and otherwise help homeless and street kids improve their lives. Every day throughout the US thirteen kids die on the streets from abuse, disease and suicide. According to recent statistics Houston has up to 2,500 kids living on the streets at any given time. Texas has the highest rate of homeless youth in the U.S.

StandUp For Kids needs supplies for our Houston program, which provides food, clothing, counseling and a safe environment for the homeless youth of Houston. When foster children reach age 18, they are considered independent. That’s difficult for kids who have been wards of the state, with necessities arranged by caseworkers with state funds. Now they’ll have to figure out how to organize themselves and make their money last a whole month. Fortunately, Child protective Services offers them a program to help prepare for independence: Preparation for Adult Living (PAL). The year-long course culminates in an all-day workshop hosted by the National Council for Jewish Women (NCJW). The course is held at Junior Achievement’s BizTown, using computer kiosks sponsored by local businesses. Katy Area Ride Service (KARS) is looking for your assistance in transporting seniors in need of personal (hair salon, bank, classes, volunteering, visiting a loved one, taking a pet to the vet) and occasional medical rides. One third of the older adults in your neighborhood live with this loss of independence daily. Rides are provided in your personal vehicles to passengers who are age 65+ and ambulatory (not wheelchair bound, may use walking aids). Time commitment is flexible and you choose the Katy territory in which you want to drive. Volunteers do not provide rides that go east of Barker Cypress, north of Clay Road, west of FM 1463 or south of Bellaire Blvd at the Grand Parkway. Benefits to Volunteer Drivers include the opportunity to help seniors retain independent living, dignity and freedom. Drivers tell us the day(s) and times they are able to drive. Drivers choose if they wait for the senior or return later to pick them up. Spaghetti Pizza

You could make this on National Spaghetti Day January 4th! INGREDIENTS: 1 (8 ounce) package spaghetti, broken into 2-inch pieces 1 egg, beaten 1/4 cup milk 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese, divided 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon garlic salt 1 (16 ounce) jar spaghetti sauce 1 teaspoon dried oregano 1/4 teaspoon dried basil 4 ounces pepperoni sausage, sliced DIRECTIONS: Preheat oven to 425 degrees F (220 degrees C). Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish. Bring a large pot of lightly salted water to a boil. Add spaghetti and cook for 8 to 10 minutes or until al dente; drain and rinse with cold water. Combine egg, milk, 1/2 cup of the mozzarella cheese, salt and garlic salt in a large bowl. Stir in cooked spaghetti; mix well. Spread mixture into prepared baking dish. Bake in preheated oven for 15 minutes. Remove from oven and reduce temperature to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Spread sauce over spaghetti. Sprinkle with oregano, basil and the remaining 1 1/2 cups mozzarella. Top with pepperoni, return to oven and bake until cheese is bubbly and beginning to brown, about 30 minutes more.
