ATTENTION VIETNAM VETERANS!! In partnership with The United States of America Vietnam War Commemoration, the Star of Destiny Chapter of the National Society of Daughters of the American Revolution (Katy, Texas) commemorates the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War by honoring our Vietnam veterans.
For historic preservation, Star of Destiny, NSDAR, is compiling personal histories of Vietnam veterans primarily with connections to Katy, TX, but also welcomes and encourages all Vietnam veterans to participate. These histories will be gathered via email and compiled for the year of 2015. Once compiled, we will present complete copies to Katy libraries and other organizations. We plan to have an online copy for all participants as well. GRANDPARENTS DAY SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 13TH
This day has a threefold purpose: • To honor grandparents. • To give grandparents an opportunity to show love for their children’s children. • To help children become aware of the strength, information and guidance older people can offer. The impetus for a National Grandparents Day originated with Marian McQuade, a housewife in Fayette County, West Virginia. Her primary motivation was to champion the cause of lonely elderly in nursing homes. She also hoped to persuade grandchildren to tap the wisdom and heritage their grandparents could provide. President Jimmy Carter, in 1978, proclaimed that National Grandparents Day would be celebrated every year on the first Sunday after Labor Day. As Grandparents Day approaches, help children and/or grandchildren to identify and date all photos in old family albums. Many happy memories can be derived from this. Everyone is a grandchild and can be involved in the observance of this day - a time to discover one’s roots and learn patience, understanding and appreciation for the elderly. Many times, only grandparents have answers to questions about family histories. When this information is passed down to the grandchildren, everyone can be assured of his heritage being preserved. Most important, Grandparents Day can signify a loving spirit that lives within us throughout the year, a spirit of love and respect for our elders. Grandparents Day is the perfect time to enhance communication between the generations. There are many, many elderly who are not fortunate enough to have family nearby. The need is increasing every day to fill the void of their loneliness. In

Time now to make plans for fall landscaping projects. • Clean up flowerbeds of fallen foliage, yellowed leaves and dead wood. Light green leaves may signify lack of iron (chlorosis). Correct with iron cheleates. • Cut off old dead foliage on irises. Scratch in a little bone meal around the roots. • Prune roses to reshape and groom plants for fall growth. Follow up with a dose of fertilizer the first week of September. • Plants come out of summer rest and go crazy. Insect populations explode as we get into cooler temperatures. Diseases that have been dormant wake up. - Citrus, croton, avocado and mango are susceptible to spider mites and thrips. Discourage them with a strong jet of water from a hose directed to the undersides of the leaves.

New Hope Child Development Center ended another fun year with many joyful celebrations including Splash Day and Graduation ceremony. Our “Big Kids” sang and danced their hearts out to a very proud audience of parents and students. There was lots of laughter with a few tears mixed in. We are always sad to see our children grow up and move on but we’ve been doing this for nearly 35 years so you would think we would be used to this by now! Our year was sprinkled with many community outreach projects benefiting Pregnancy Help Center’s Connor’s Closet, JoJo’s Bears, Eternal Food Ministries, Souper Bowl of Caring and several Homeless ministries. We are looking forward to another exciting school year. We have openings in our young 2’s class (18-23 months) and our Bridge class. We also have several employment opportunities as well. KYB has developed a new website and registration platform and will now be offering parents the ability to complete all their registration needs online, prior to our walk-up registration, which is now optional. However, KYB will continue to host a walk-up registration for those who prefer to register in person. KYB offers a 5-on-5 league for boys and girls of all skill levels who are currently enrolled in 1st-8th grades and who reside within the Katy ISD attendance boundaries. Practices will begin in November and games will begin in January.

Children and youth of the Katy-area community are invited to join Living Word Lutheran Church’s music programs. The following programs are available: Children (4 yrs-1st grade) are invited to join the Cherubs music program and children (grades 2-5) are invited to join the Choristers music program. The children will learn to read music, sing in a healthy vocal style and play chimes and other instruments. Cherubs will meet on Mondays from 6-6:45 PM beginning September 14th and Choristers will meet on Tuesdays from 6-7:15 PM beginning September 1st. The groups will sing during worship services about once a month and a children’s musical will be performed in the spring of 2016.

We are a (ladies only) daytime chorus rehearsing every Friday morning from 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM, at the Treemont Retirement Center, 2501 Westerland, near Westheimer and Gessner. Some of us read music, but it is not required. We are provided a CD to help in learning new songs. Our director, Martha Upton and assistant director, Cay Eckland will help you find out if you are a Tenor, Lead, Baritone or Bass. We have been performing in the Houston area for over 38 years. We prepare two types of shows each year; a Christmas show with old favorites, but always a new fun tune including props, narratives and choreography. Our regular show this year is titled “Through the Years” We are singing songs from 1900 and every decade after that. Volunteers are on hand during the NARHA on-site certification and annual SIRE Show-Off and volunteers are vital to our Clients’ successes at the Top Hands Horse Show, during the Houston Rodeo and competition at the regional and state Special Olympics. When foster children reach age 18, they are considered independent. That’s difficult for kids who have been wards of the state, with necessities arranged by caseworkers with state funds. Now they’ll have to figure out how to organize themselves and make their money last a whole month. Fortunately, Child protective Services offers them a program to help prepare for independence: Preparation for Adult Living (PAL). The year-long course culminates in an all-day workshop hosted by the National Council for Jewish Women (NCJW). The course is held at Junior Achievement’s BizTown, using computer kiosks sponsored by local businesses.
