GARDENING TIPS FOR NOVEMBER
• Brown patch will continue to plague St. Augustine lawns as nights get cooler and humidity and rain continue. Discolored circles will appear in low areas almost overnight. Apply a fungicide recommended for brown patch according to label directions. Avoid walking through brown-patched turf. It spreads easily from the bottom of your shoes. If brown patch appears in the same lawn areas every year, add an inch or two of sandy topsoil to eliminate those low spots. • Fertilize St. Augustine turf with a winterizing formula to promote root growth over the winter months. Lower your lawn mover blades now and mow on a schedule that cuts no more than one-third of the grass blade away. • As chrysanthemums and other perennials finish blooming, cut flowering stalks to the ground to permit all strength to be used in making root growth. • Feed roses lightly, but avoid nitrogen fertilizers. Do not prune now. Keep up spraying program and water deeply. • Remove dead foliage and plant debris to help eradicate insects and disease organisms. SURVIVING BLACK FRIDAY
Weeks Before Black Friday: • Make a list of the must-have products that you are shopping for this holiday season, including the names of the people for whom you are shopping. This will make your day more organized and will reduce the number of unnecessary purchases that you make. • Sign up for store email updates so that you will be among the first to know what will be on sale. • Print out any online coupons you may have. • Sign up for free store club cards that offer discounts or coupons. Stores like Barnes & Noble offer such programs. • Consider outlet shopping. The Day Before Black Friday: • Eat a lot of turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing and pumpkin pie. This will not help your shopping, per se, but will make you feel happy and satisfied. • Get a good’s night sleep the night before. Thanks to all that food in your belly it shouldn’t be too hard to fall asleep.

Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving and the beginning of the Christmas shopping season, can be thrilling and stressful all at the same time. With stores offering drastically marked-down prices on in-demand items on Black Friday, Thanksgiving Day sales bring big crowds and long lines are to be expected. To successfully make it through the mall without being pummeled by other moms looking for a good deal, we have some tips and tricks to make your holiday shopping spree a little easier:
25+ Years Experience
Monday-Saturday & Evenings
30+ Years of Experience
transfer volunteer seedlings. Beds made now will benefit by weathering before being planted. If soil is heavy, dig six inches deep, leave rough, cover with gymsum and strawy manure, water and allow to mellow. • Bananas are more likely to bear fruit if the trunk does not die back in winter. Cut banana stalks back to six feet, wrap with newspaper and burlap. • Continue mulching for winter. Build up a thick top mulch to protect roots from freezing and winter drying. Don’t throw away those pine tree needles; they make great acidic mulch for azaleas, gardenias and next Spring’s impatiens. • Place pansies in beds after weather has cooled. Use a little blood meat mixed in soil under each plant. • Now is the best time to plant trees and shrubs.
WHITEHOUSE
The Day Of Thanksgiving Day Sales: • Know exactly the time that the stores you want to hit are open and go to the store that has the best deals and/or the gift you want to get the most first. Be there at least a half-hour before it opens if the gift is popular. • Leave the kids at home; this is not a day to worry about handholding and good behavior. • Be caffeinated and full - don’t shop on low energy and an empty stomach. • Pack snacks so that you don’t have to stop your marathon-shopping day to grab some grub from the food court. • Bring along a MP3 player or portable CD player to help pass the time when you are waiting to pay for your finds. • Don’t worry about purchasing little gifts today, such as stocking stuffers, but rather focus on gifts that are bigger, harder to find and more expensive. • Consider this a good day to look for that new winter coat or little black dress you need. Clothing sales are usually very good on Black Friday, because so many people are already in the stores looking for toys and gifts. • If a product is not available, but the store offers a rain check, take it. Make sure that when you cash in your rain check you are getting the price that the product was listed at for that day. www.kaboose.com
HOW THE TURKEY GOT ITS NAME
There are a number of explanations for the origin of the name of Thanksgiving’s favorite dinner guest. Some believe Christopher Columbus thought that the land he discovered was connected to India and believed the bird he discovered (the turkey) was a type of peacock. He therefore called it “tuka,” which is “peacock” in Tamil, an Indian language. Though the turkey is actually a type of pheasant, one can’t blame the explorer for trying. The Native American name for turkey is “firkee;” some say this is how turkeys got their name. Simple facts, however, sometimes produce the best answers - when a turkey is scared, it makes a “turk, turk, turk” noise. Humor: Why do turkeys always go, “gobble, gobble?” Because they never learned good table manners!

Father and Son Raise Flags Each Weekday at CCS Michael Shassere and his son, Nicolas, began raising the American, Texas and Christian flags at CCS each weekday morning at the beginning of last year, when Nicolas needed a service project for Cub Scouts. Mr. Shassere writes, “Nicolas enjoyed this so much that he asked Elementary Principal Mr. White if this could be ‘our service to CCS.’ As we all know, parents are rushed in the mornings getting children ready for school, carpooling and off to class. With this project, Nicolas and I enjoy focused father-son time, sharing in the fact that even such a small act is an act of selflessness and as such, honors God, our country, our state and all the staff at CCS.” Cy-Christian Students JAM to Set Record Students and teachers at Cypress Christian School - along with children and adults from around the country - took a one minute fitness break to participate in the first ever JAM World Record 2012. It was a quick, easy and FUN routine for students of all ages and abilities. This national initiative was created to raise awareness about the importance of making good health choices and physical activity a daily habit. JAM World Record 2012, along with Let’s Move in School urges everyone to support schools where every student has the opportunity to learn healthy habits and participate in a quality physical education program. CCS joined the effort to reach the goal of two million JAMmers! Shown “JAMming” are fifth graders Aubri Garrett and Katie Bretz.

Cy-Fair ISD IMPORTANT DATES
November 21st - 23rd - Student/Staff Holiday
THIRD ANNUAL CYPRESS HOOPS INVITATIONAL
Cy-Fair Educational Foundation (CFEF) is gearing up for their highly anticipated Cypress Hoops Invitational Tournament to be held for the third year December 6 through 8, 2012. Twenty-four high school varsity level teams, including those from Cy-Fair ISD and outside the district, will compete over the three day event at various high schools with the championship games held at the Berry Center. Joining the tournament for the first time this year will be two teams from outside the Houston area. “A team from Crowley and one from South Grand Prairie will be traveling to Houston for the event,” said Teresa Hull, event co-chair. “This is so exciting because it means that word has gotten out about the high level of organization and quality of our tournament. This will help us continue to build state recognition and gives us great potential to grow,” she said. The tournament was started by community member Eric Burg and modeled after an extremely successful tournament held in Pasadena. Burg, who played basketball in Cy Fair ISD, wanted a way to showcase the talent and facilities in Cy-Fair ISD and the tournament grew from there. In a nail biter championship game between Klein and Cypress Falls last year, Klein pulled ahead in the last moment of the game and won the tournament. “These games are so fun to watch,” said Teresa. “We are hoping to attract many spectators to cheer for the kids since ticket prices are so reasonable (just $2 for students and $3 for adults). We want a lot seats in the seats!” she said.

It takes a lot of community volunteers to put on an event that is as well run and organized as the Cypress Hoops Invitational. “Instrumental in last year’s event were John Fox, Fox and Bubela and Leslie Martone, who is now President of the Cy Fair Chamber of Commerce and sponsors such as the event’s underwriter, North Cypress Medical Center,” said Hull. Last year the tournament raised $17,161.58. All proceeds raised through entry fees, game tickets and sponsorships go to the Foundation’s “Donate to Educate” program, which provides college scholarships for district students as well as staff development grants to CFISD. For more information about ways to participate, contact Marie Holmes at 281-807-3591 or marie@ thecfef.org (email).
SALUTE TO OUR HEROES CY-FAIR EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION HONORS MILITARY HEROES
February 9, 2013 The Foundation will kick off it’s fifth “Salute to Our Heroes” event on February 9, 2013 at the Omni Hotel Westside Houston. “Salute to Our Heroes” honors the brave men and women who have served to preserve our freedom and liberty. Proceeds from this event go to an endowment enabling graduating students from CFISD to attend college. The event will be generously underwritten by Earthcare Management and Kodiak Gas Services, as the Missing Man Underwriters. The Cypress Fairbanks Medical Center Hospital will be the Major General Sponsor. This year our guest speaker is Steve Russell. LTC Steve Russell (Ret) commanded the central unit responsible in the hunt and capture of Saddam Hussein. Through leadership and joint efforts across multiple teams, a large organization worked effectively to capture one of the world’s most notorious criminals. Russell is an American Hero. His proven leadership and problemresolution techniques engage audiences through his storytelling.

The second purpose is to raise funds for scholarships for Cy-Fair ISD students. Each year we give three scholarships per Cy-Fair ISD high school and the number of high schools is growing. It has been a challenge keeping up with the demand, but CFEF is dedicated to this mission. The inaugural event honors Jersey Village High School graduate 1st Lt. Jeremy E. Ray, who was killed Dec. 20, 2007 while serving his country in Iraq. A CFEF endowment was established in Jeremy’s memory by an anonymous donor. Last year the 1st Lieutenant Jeremy Ray Community Service and Peace Award was presented to Klein Funeral Homes & Memorials. Following tradition, the event will have the Missing Man Table & Honors Ceremony. The table will have empty table settings with chairs leaning up against the table as though saved for someone. The table settings have a single red rose displayed in a vase in reminder of the bloodshed for our country and the vase was tied with a red ribbon - a symbol of the continued pledge to shed blood for our country. A slice of lemon on the bread plate is a reminder of the bitterness of the loss of comrades in arms; a bowl of salt to symbolize the tears shed by family members of lost loved ones and glasses turned upside down indicate no one will sit there. Last year’s ceremony was performed by the 75th Army Division Honor Guard and was proceeded by Taps performed by William Veenstra, Cy-Fair High School Senior. For more information on the 2013 event please contact Marie Holmes at 281807-3591 or marie@thecfef.org (email).
CFISD SCHOOLS EARN TEXAS HONORS CIRCLE AWARDS

Only 329 school campuses statewide received this distinction for high rankings in the 2012 Financial Allocation Study for Texas (FAST), meaning CFISD accounted for 9.1 percent of all Honors Circle campuses statewide. CFISD was one of only 43 Texas districts to earn the five-star rating from the office of Susan Combs, Texas Comptroller, for academic and financial performance. A five-star rating reflects the strongest relative academic progress combined with the lowest relative spending. Elementary campuses receiving the award achieved a five-star FAST rating, while middle and high-school campuses tapped for the honor achieved at least a 4.5-star FAST rating. CY-FAIR ISD & VOLUNTEERS IN PUBLIC SCHOOLS (VIPS) Where “Volunteers are Treasures!”
All of our volunteers are true treasured heroes. They help in the library, sell school spirit items, organize fundraisers, read to a classroom, make costumes and test vision and hearing. The list is endless and their experience is vast. If you listen to their stories though, you will find that in all the things volunteers do, there is an element of discovery. They find not only what a child can do, but what their own treasured gift might be. And yes, there has probably even been an encounter with a dragon or two along the way.

The Cornerstone United Methodist Church (CUMC) will be hosting a Live Nativity on Saturday, December 8th, from 6-8 PM, as we transform the front area of the church into scenes that will depict the story of the birth of Jesus Christ. There will be shepherds with their sheep, the Three Wise Men and a camel, Mary and Joseph with baby Jesus in a manger and an angel portraying this holy event. You will be able to visually embrace this event as you drive through, read scriptures and listen to music that tell of the wondrous night. In the past, we have had several hundred cars that drive through to celebrate the true meaning of Christmas - the birth of Jesus Christ. We are located at 18081 West Road at Barker Cypress behind the CVS. For directions or more information, please go to our website at www.cornerstoneumc.org or call the church at 281-859-4141.

2013 Relay For Life of Cy-Fair Cy-Falls High School
Friday, April 26, 2013 - 7:00 pm Come join our planning committee or register your own team to help raise money for cancer in our Cy-Fair community!!
832.620.7844 By Appointment only
The Heart of Relay: During the Relay for Life event, three ceremonies are held Survivors Lap: To start Relay, those who have survived their battle with cancer join together to walk a lap celebrating their victories over the disease. Luminaria Ceremony: At dark, the track is lined with candle-lit bags bearing the names of those who have been touched by or have lost their lives to cancer. Fight Back Ceremony: Before participants leave Relay, they make a personal commitment to help fight back against cancer in several ways. As interest in Relay for Life grew in the Houston area, the American Cancer Society began forming events in local communities and the first Cy-Fair Relay for Life committee was formed in 2004. This is our 9th year in Cy-Fair and our goal is to reach the $1 Million Dollar Mark. We are very close and only need $150,000 to meet our goal and with YOUR help, we can make this goal a reality!! 100% of our profits go to ACS to use for research and other programs. With more than 1,000 participants in last year’s Relay, we know that we can grow even bigger this year! Kimberly Akimbo is a play written in 2000 by Pulitzer prize-winning playwright David Lindsay-Abaire. Its title character is a lonely teenage girl suffering from a disease a lot like progeria, that causes her to age 4 and a half times as fast as normal. Thus, Kimberly is trapped inside the frail physical body of an elderly woman. She meets another misfit (a teenage boy) and the two form an attachment to one another that borders on attraction. The situation is not helped by Kimberly’s rapidly deteriorating health. Soon Kimberly’s family gets mixed up in some crazy money schemes and the family gets emotionally destroyed. November 29-December 15, 2012, (Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Monday). All performances begin at 8 pm. Price- $18 regular/ $10 students and seniors. “I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ? We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through November. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.

CAM volunteers often let us know the fun they are having, the friends they have made and the fulfillment they receive from helping others. The services provided at CAM, are made possible by many dedicated volunteers. If you enjoy working with the public, decorating or merchandising, then serving in CAM’s resale shop, Angels’ Attic, is the place for you. Our busy community donation area, the Cellar, is looking for people willing to serve by processing donations and restocking Angels’ Attic. Please plan to
