All our veterans were honored on Sunday, November 10, 2013 at the Cypress Mill Recreation Center. Steve Howard, Cypress Mill Board Member, began the celebration with a speech that described the great patriotism demonstrated by U.S. veterans and expressed that our armed forces produced great soldiers and great citizens. Minister J. Michael Frasier prayed over our veterans before the CyWoods Honor Guard raised the U.S. flag and back down to half-staff. A bugler, Jason Brown, was present to perform Taps. The veterans and their families were served a lunch that included burgers, brisket, potato salad and more. Chill Out Blankets raffled a personalized blanket to one of our veterans. Our veterans were given an opportunity to introduce themselves and speak about their service experiences. Many were moved as we heard their stories of bravery, loyalty and humility. We are deeply honored and appreciative to all veterans for their ultimate sacrifice and commitment to preserve our freedom.

HOA MEETING

Our next meeting will be January 22nd at 7 PM.

The winner of the contest to rename Cypress Mill recreation center will be announced at the January 2014 HOA meeting.

Based on our location, the geographic area to be serviced is far Northwest Houston, Katy and Waller. The toys are gathered from all donation sites on December 15th and taken to the main Houston “Toys for Tots” warehouse off 290 for packaging and distribution to children in need in the different areas. They will be officially distributed by “Toys for Tots.” Heather is personally volunteering and as a Board member in our local MOMS group, she is working with her chapter, (with the generous help of our HOA in allowing our rec. center to be used as a drop off site), in order to gather lots of toys for needy boys and girls. FROM THE OFFICIAL TOYS FOR TOTS WEBSITE: “Toys for Tots” is the Marine Corps’ premier community action program, one of the nation’s flagship charitable endeavors, an American tradition and a national treasure. For over half of a century, Marines have been the unchallenged leaders in looking after needy children at Christmas. The “Toys for Tots” message of hope for the future has motivated youngsters to grow into responsible, productive, patriotic citizens and community leaders. “Toys for Tots” has earned the distinction as a program which plays an important role in helping youngsters emerge from a background of poverty to adulthood as assets to society. “Toys for Tots” not only benefits children, but also has a positive impact on communities, on businesses - large and small, on the Marine Corps and on the nation. “Toys for Tots” is one vehicle for addressing the issue of poverty among children. According to child psychologists, mentoring is the most effective means of making a positive impact on the development of children. However, today’s overtaxed mentoring projects are able to reach only a small percentage of the

December 2013

millions of needy children. We must, therefore, pursue alternatives to build/ restore self-esteem among needy children and give them hope for the future. Moreover, since children imitate the actions of their elders, children should be exposed to positive role models. Americans from every walk of life can join the “Toys for Tots” team and be an active participant in the development of our children. The challenge: be a participator, not a spectator. Just do your part to assist in the development of today’s children so they will grow into responsible, productive, patriotic citizens and community leaders for the future. You will be helping children, your community and your nation. Your action today will help produce leaders for tomorrow. Help us “make a difference.”

KEENAGERS POTLUCK SUPPERS

BEST WISHES TO CAROLYN AND CHARLIE

Sadly, the Keenagers’ coordinator, Carolyn Hoffmann, will be leaving Cypress Mill with her husband, Charlie, to move to Florida to be closer to family. Both Carolyn and Charlie have been extremely active in neighborhood activities since they moved here over eight years ago. If you have attended any of the activities at the recreation center, you will have seen Carolyn busy working before and during the events. Carolyn also started the Keenagers monthly potluck suppers and monthly bus trips for seniors aged 50+ and was also co-editor of the Cypress Mill Messenger when she worked as Administrative Assistant at the rec center. Recently, Carolyn headed up the committee for Yards of the Month. All in all, Carolyn and Charlie are probably the most community-minded residents of our neighborhood and they will be greatly missed.

HOLIDAY SAFETY TIPS

The holiday season is here and many of us will be decorating our homes and traveling. Below are some tips to help keep our families safe and to help reduce our stress levels so we can focus on enjoying our time spent with family and friends. • When purchasing an artificial tree, look for a fire resistant label. • If purchasing a fresh tree, make sure the needles are difficult to pull from the branches, the needles do not break between your fingers and the trunk should be sticky with resin. • Keep trees away from heat sources, such as fireplaces and radiators. • For better water absorption, cut off 2 inches of the tree trunk and keep the tree stand filled with water. • Make sure indoor or outdoor lights are labeled from an independent testing laboratory and check each light for any type of damage. • Do not link more than three light strands per single extension cord. Never connect more than one extension cord together. • Use only nonflammable or flame-retardant decorations. Take special care to avoid decorations that are sharp or breakable. • Never put wrapping paper in the fireplace; this can result in a flash fire. • Consider using flameless candles, but if you do use lit candles, keep these

candles at least 12 inches from anything that can burn. • Turn off all lights when you go to bed or leave your home. • Keep candles, matches and lighters out of reach of children. • Test your smoke alarms to make sure they work. Holiday Driving and Travel Tips • Before leaving your home, lock all doors and windows. Inform the Constable of your travel plans. • Have a relative, friend or neighbor check for any deliveries sent to your home. • Make sure your car’s vitals are checked. Have your tires properly inflated. • Map your route and consider leaving earlier or later to avoid traffic. Inform someone of your route and estimated arrival time. • Bring emergency equipment, such as flashlights, jumper cables, water and first-aid kits. • Keep your valuables hidden in a covered area or in the trunk. • Don’t let your gas tank get too low. Make sure to have roadside assistance phone numbers available. • Pack a cooler filled with nutritious food that will help maintain your energy levels and alertness. Make frequent rest stops. • Drive at the speed limit to conserve gas and don’t forget to wear your seat belts. • Check the Transportation Security Administration website for traveler information regarding prohibited and carry-on items. • Make photocopies of your ID, passports and credit cards and keep them separate from the originals. • Bring an extra pair of glasses or contact lenses. • Arrive at the airport early as some flights are overbooked - 2 hours for domestic travelers and 3 hours for international travelers. • Do not place wrapped gifts in your luggage; security personnel will need access to all your items. • Make sure to pack your prescription medications in your carry-on bags, as well as any cell phone chargers. Look into health care options near your destination. • Take time to stretch your arms and legs every hour on long flights. • Be polite. Airline employees appreciate your understanding during this busy time of year. Have a safe and happy holiday season.

ARCHITECTURAL REVIEW BOARD

The Architectural Review Board exists so that Cypress Mill can remain a special place to live. Anyone wishing to make external changes to their property must meet the association’s requirements for modifications and submit an application before initiating work.

BARKING DOGS PROBLEM

• The best way is to call the Constables office and make a noise complaint. 24 hour dispatch 281-376-3472. • Call from outside when the dogs are barking. • Request from the operator who answers the phone exactly what to ask for on a formal noise complaint. • Tell them you would like to meet the constable to make a formal complaint. • If a ticket is issued and the dog does not stop barking, the owner of the dog could go to Judge Adams Court and get a fine. • The best way is to talk to your neighbor, but if you don’t feel comfortable call the Constables office.

ARCHITECTURAL REVIEW PROCESS

Read the Design Guidelines The Design Guidelines, as well as other legally binding documents, are provided to homeowners prior to closing on a house. Please read the guidelines and application requirements carefully before submitting your application. Submit an Application Submit your application, along with any other required documentation to the management company. Please allow the allotted time period for your application to be reviewed. Incomplete information only delays your project. ARB Review The Board will review your application and perform any site inspections outlined in the association documents. You will be contacted if the ARB has questions or if there are problems with your request. Note - the ARB enforces community guidelines but it is up to you to make sure you meet local permit requirements. Approval or Rejection You will be notified of the approval or rejection of your request. If you have questions about the disposition, please contact your community manager.

USPS CLUSTER MAIL BOXES

There are still commercial notices being taped on mailboxes. This is not only illegal but unsightly, particularly when the paper becomes weathered and torn. Please show some respect to the neighborhood and keep it neat and clean. If you see unauthorized notices, take a minute when picking up your mail to remove them.

REMINDER ABOUT TRASH COLLECTION DAYS

Remember that there is NO trash collection, either regular or recycling, on public holidays: Christmas, Thanksgiving, Memorial Day, Labor Day, New Year’s Day, Independence day, etc. Please do not leave trash at the curb expecting collection on those days. If you need clarification, contact Best Trash Services; http://best-trash.com. Trash will be picked up on the next regularly scheduled day: recycling and household trash on Mondays, household trash on Thursdays.

ATTENTION BLOCK CAPTAINS

Please take a moment to check the list of Block Captains at the beginning of the newsletter. If you notice any errors, please contact your new Block Captain Chairperson, Shalise Law: shaliselaw@gmail or Mike Crahan: m.crahan@pmghouston.com. Thank you.

GARDENING TIPS FOR DECEMBER

• If a long flowering period is desired, pansies should be placed in their permanent beds not later than this month. Fertilize monthly with manure, super-phosphate or a liquid high-phosphate product. Keep flowers picked for more bloom. • Take tulips out of cold storage and plant late this month. • Fertilize established trees, spring-blooming shrubs, spurias and sweet peas (after they are a foot tall) with a fertilizer such as 13-13-13; Louisiana iris with cotton seed meal and manure. • Azaleas and camellias may be moved now. Keep moist to lesson cold weather damage. May acidify again. • Last month to plant early blossoming spring bulbs, speciosum and other varieties of lilies. Mulch. • Water plants well before a freeze; dry roots are easily damaged. • Don’t forget to provide food and fresh water for birds. More birds die from lack of water than lack of food.

• If your yard backs onto a retention pond, please do not throw feces (or other trash) over the fence. Often this lands on the walking path which is both an eyesore for walkers and hazardous, especially for small children. • Do not leave your dog(s) outside for extended periods if consistent barking is likely to annoy your neighbors. If this is not corrected, you may get a visit from your local deputy. • Please restrain your dog from pounding against your neighbor’s fence. There have been several instances where dogs have broken through the fence into a neighbor’s yard. If your dog does break a picket, then replace it as soon as possible. • Limit the number of pets to the number as directed in your section bylaws. • Always carry a poop bag when walking your dog.

RELAY FOR LIFE® TEAMS ALREADY FORMING FOR APRIL 25, 2014 EVENT!!

The American Cancer Society’s popular fundraising event in the fight against cancer, Relay For Life®, is now forming both business and personal teams for the April 25, 2014 Cy-Fair event. We are also seeking volunteers, cancer Survivors and CareGivers for the Cy-Fair Relay. Anyone interested in signing up or learning more about how you can help in the fight against cancer can go to www.relayforlife.org/cyfairtx. At Relay For Life® events, communities across the globe come together to honor cancer survivors, remember loved ones lost and fight back against a disease that has already taken too much. The funds you raise truly make a difference in the fight against cancer - just ask one of the nearly 14 million cancer survivors who will celebrate another birthday this year! Relay For Life® teams camp out overnight and take turns walking or running around a track or path at a local high school, park or fairground. Events are up to 24 hours long and because cancer never sleeps, each team is asked to have at least one participant on the track at all times. BOWLING TOURNAMENT! Who doesn’t love to bowl? The 5th Annual Relay For Life of Cy-Fair Bowling Tournament is now accepting registrations for individuals and teams! The tournament will be January 13, 2014 from 3 PM to 5 PM. You can register for this event at: www.hprelayforlife.com/registration.php. Thank you for getting involved! Richard Iazzetti, Publicity Chair, Relay For Life - Cy-Fair
