DEED RESTRICTION VIOLATIONS

by Mike Crahan I would like to thank every homeowner who is maintaining their home. It is a pleasure working in the neighborhood where homeowners have nice yards and take care of their homes.

ARCHITECTURAL CONTROL COMMITTEE

So you’d like to build an igloo? Or paint your house red and blue to pay tribute to your favorite sports team? These are easily identified as requests that would not be allowed in our neighborhood. But what are the kinds of things for which you need to submit a request for approval to the HOA?

Basically, if you are making a change to your home or yard, you are required to submit a request. Some common requests are: • Installing a pool • Replacing windows, doors or shutters • Building a covered patio • Installing a storage unit • Installing an irrigation system • Replacing your roof • Painting your home/trim • Removing/replacing the trees in your front yard We also get a lot of requests about replacing your fence. This one is a little more complex. If you are replacing your fence with EXACTLY the same fence (in the same place with the same size boards and the same pattern), then you don’t need HOA approval. However, if you are CHANGING anything the pattern of the fence (including installing rot board at the bottom), moving it, adding a gate or changing the material of your fence, then you need approval of the HOA. Approval is based on the deed restrictions for your particular section of Cypress Mill. Each section has a different set and you should have received a copy for your section when you built or purchased your home. Please read them and know what is allowed and what is prohibited in our community.

CypressChristian.org K-12 • Established 1978 Serving Northwest Houston 281.469.8829

The approval process is easy. You can pick up the forms at the community center or you may find them online at www.cypressmillhoa.com. Simply complete the form, include a copy of your property map and samples of any materials like paint color or shingle color and a check for the $25 processing fee. The more information you include with the application, the faster and easier the approval process will be. If we have questions because you didn’t include all of the required information, it will slow the process down. Keep in mind that approval may take up to 30 days - plan ahead! Submit your application early, so that your project is not delayed. The ACC committee is made up of volunteer homeowners and our goal is to provide a beautiful and consistent look to our neighborhood.

HOLIDAY HEALTH AND SAFETY TIPS

Wash your hands often. Keeping hands clean is one of the most important steps you can take to avoid getting sick and spreading germs to others. Wash your hands with soap and clean running water and rub them together for at least 20 seconds. Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. If you don’t have tissue, cough or sneeze into your upper sleeve or elbow, not your hands. Stay warm. Cold temperatures can cause serious health problems, especially in infants and older adults. Stay dry and dress warmly in several layers. Manage stress. The holidays don’t need to take a toll on your health and pocketbook. Keep your commitments and spending in check. Balance work, home and play. Get support from family and friends. Keep a relaxed and positive outlook. Make sure to get proper sleep.

Choose fresh fruit as a festive and sweet substitute for candy. Limit fats, salt and sugary foods. Find fun ways to stay active, such as dancing to your favorite holiday music. Be active for at least 2 1/2 hours a week. Help kids and teens be active for at least 1 hour a day.

Get check-ups and vaccinations. Exams and screenings can help find potential problems early, when the chances for treatment and cure are often better. Vaccinations help prevent diseases and save lives. Schedule a visit with your health care provider for needed exams and screenings. Ask what vaccinations and tests you should get based on your age, lifestyle, travel plans, medical history and family health history. Get health insurance through healthcare.gov if needed.

VETERANS DAY RECOGNITION

Watch the kids. Children are at high risk for injuries. Keep a watchful eye on your kids when they’re eating and playing. Keep potentially dangerous toys, food, drinks, household items, choking hazards (like coins and hard candy) and other objects out of kids’ reach. Learn how to provide early treatment for children who are choking. Make sure toys are used properly. Develop rules about acceptable and safe behaviors, including using electronic media. Prevent injuries. Injuries can happen anywhere and some often occur around the holidays. Use step stools instead of climbing on furniture when hanging decorations. Leave the fireworks to the professionals. Wear a helmet when riding a bicycle or skateboarding to help prevent head injuries. Keep vaccinations up to date. Most residential fires occur during the winter months. Keep candles away from children, pets, walkways, trees and curtains. Never leave fireplaces, stoves or candles unattended. Don’t use generators, grills or other gasoline or charcoal-burning devices inside your home or garage. Install a smoke detector and carbon monoxide detector in your home. Test them once a month and replace batteries twice a year. Handle and prepare food safely. As you prepare holiday meals, keep yourself and your family safe from food-related illness. AREA FOOD PANTRY

Do you know of someone who has trouble putting food on the table? Maybe their employment was suddenly terminated, maybe it’s a choice between medications or food; for whatever reason, people can find themselves in a situation where they need a little help. Fountain of Life Church of God on Mueschke runs a food pantry on Mondays from 6 - 8 PM and the only stipulation is that the client should live in zip code 77433 and west of Skinner 77429. For more information, contact 281-373-9337. Food donations are also greatly appreciated.

FEEDBACK IS IMPORTANT

Your feedback on anything you read or feel is missing from the Messenger is very important. Please feel free to contact your Community Manager, Mike Crahan, with any comments or suggestions. Also let Mike know if you would be interested in contributing any articles or information.

GENTLE REMINDER ABOUT PETS

ALL pets should be kept on a leash when not on your secured property. Make sure all fences are in good condition and be courteous to other walkers. We have not been notified of any serious incidents in quite a while, so let’s keep it that way.

POOPER SCOOPERS

Need we say more … We continue to receive complaints about residents having to clean up after a neighbor’s dog has left a message on their lawn. Please remember to carry a poop bag with you when taking Fido for a walk. Thank you.

GARDENING TIPS FOR DECEMBER

• If a long flowering period is desired, pansies should be placed in their permanent beds not later than this month. Fertilize monthly with manure, super-phosphate or a liquid high-phosphate product. Keep flowers picked for more bloom.

The block captains are all listed in the Cypress Mill Messenger with either their phone number and/or email address. If your street does not have a block captain, think about volunteering…. it’s a great way to get to know your neighbors and be one step ahead of the news. Contact Shalise at shaliselaw@gmail.com, if you would like to volunteer.

• Take tulips out of cold storage and plant late this month.

NEWSLETTER DEADLINE

• Fertilize established trees, spring-blooming shrubs, spurias and sweet peas (after they are a foot tall) with a fertilizer such as 13-13-13; Louisiana iris with cotton seed meal and manure. • Azaleas and camellias may be moved now. Keep moist to lesson cold weather damage. May acidify again. • Last month to plant early blossoming spring bulbs, speciosum and other varieties of lilies. Mulch. • Water plants well before a freeze; dry roots are easily damaged. • Don’t forget to provide food and fresh water for birds. More birds die from lack of water than lack of food.

REMINDER ABOUT TRASH COLLECTION DAYS

Remember that there is NO trash collection, either regular or recycling, on public holidays: Christmas, Thanksgiving, Memorial Day, Labor Day, New Year’s Day, Independence Day, etc. Please do not leave trash at the curb expecting collection on those days. If you need clarification, contact Best Trash Services: http://best-trash.com. Trash will be picked up on the next regularly scheduled day: recycling and household trash on Mondays, household trash on Thursdays.

BOOK YOUR PARTY NOW

The meeting/activity room at the rec. center is available for birthday parties, wedding showers, baby showers, etc. Rental is $50 with a $300 deposit. Dates are filling up fast. Contact Mike Crahan for more information.

The deadline for submitting articles/information to the Cypress Mill Messenger is the 6th of the preceding month. Please email articles to: M.Crahan@pmghouston.com Information should be sent as an attachment in Word document format.

STREET LIGHT OUT?

Have you noticed a streetlight out? You can report it to CenterPoint Energy 24 hours a day at 713-207-2222. Choose a language preference and then select option “4” for street light outages. Please provide the streetlight’s six digit number located approximately 5 feet up the pole. Also, it is helpful to give the street name and address.

TEENAGE JOB SEEKERS

If you are between 12 and 18 and would like to be added to the teenage job seeker’s list, please fill out the form on our website at www.krenekprinting. com, click submissions, and choose Jobseekers. All information must be complete before the form can be submitted. You will need to include your name, birthdate, phone number, year you will graduate, and the name of your subdivision. Check the list of jobs. Make sure your email is correct. We will send emails during the summer to verify all the information is still correct and that you would like to stay on the list. If we do not hear back from you after 3 tries, we will remove you from the list until we do. Must have parent(s) permission to be on the Job Seekers List.

TEENAGE JOBSEEKER DISCLAIMER Neither the subdivision, nor Krenek Printing is responsible for those listed on the Teenage Job Seeker List. Please ask for and check out references if you do not personally know those listed. This is just a list of teenagers from the subdivision who wish to find part time jobs. Responsibility for any work done by these teenagers is between those seeking helpers and the teens and their parents.

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN CYPRESS MILL? Do you want to know what’s happening in your neighborhood without waiting for the Messenger? If so, please let your block captain have your email address so that they can keep you informed of current news and events.

ATTENTION JOBSEEKERS!

If your name was left off the list, it is because you did not return our emails to update our records. You will have to resubmit your information to be put back on.

HOUSTON CY-FAIR LIONS CLUB TO OFFER FREE VISION SCREENING

Houston Cy-Fair Lions Club will conduct FREE vision screening to children from six months of age and older at the Jersey Village Holiday in the Park, to be held Sunday December 6th, from 1-4 PM at Clark Henry Park. This vision screening uses a unique special camera that takes a photo of the child’s eyes and within seconds relates a pass or refer status. Those with the refer status will need to have a professional eye examination at a local optometrist. Vision problems are the leading disability in children, who are unaware that they cannot see properly. They cannot compare their vision to others and vision problems do not cause pain or inflammation, so parents, teachers and caregivers are unaware that the child has visual difficulties. Eighty percent of learning is visual. The Houston Cy-Fair Lions Club has recently purchased the Plusoptix Vision Screener for this community service project. This is part of a nationwide KidSight initiative through Lions Clubs International to screen children early for vision problems. Please bring your children to the Houston Cy-Fair Lions Club booth at Holiday in the Park for this important screening, which takes only a minute. To schedule a free vision screening at your day care or church, please contact: Sandy Martin, Houston Cy-Fair Lions Club Vision Screening Program, 281-550-2798 or bikee77095@yahoo.com.
