February 2016 MESSAGE FROM YOUR HOA BOARD OF DIRECTORS

Greetings fellow homeowners: We hope that all of you had a safe and enjoyable holiday season. 2015 was a busy year for your HOA. Improvements/additions to the fitness room include an elliptical machine, 2 tread mills, a weight bench, new kettle weights and a new 3-stage weight station. Currently new swings and synthetic turf are being installed at the Cypresswood pool area. The Easter Egg Hunt event was larger than previous years due mainly to Krystal’s diligent planning. There was a petting zoo, games, train ride, food and the real Easter bunny came by to visit for pictures. The 4th of July event was another huge success with a fire truck, parade, food and pool fun, shade tents and Uncle Sam on stilts. Veterans Day Recognition has become a tradition in Cypress Mill… a way to show appreciation for our veterans with BBQ dinner, fellowship and experience sharing. Visit with Santa… another successful tradition in Cypress Mill for residents and their families. As usual Santa Jim and Suzula the elf delighted the children as did the balloon artist and face painter. A special thank-you goes out to all the volunteers who help make these events possible. Spring is just around the corner so don’t forget a little TLC for your yards; fertilizer your grass to encourage healthy new growth and if you need a little help deciding on which bedding plants to buy; check out the splash of color at our entrances.

On a more serious note, there will be HOA Board positions becoming open in April. If you are interested in serving our community and would like run for a position on the HOA Board, please contact Mike Crahan for more information. It is a two-year term and takes just a few hours each month. Our community managers handle the day-to-day operations of the neighborhood under the direction of the HOA Board. If you have a special interest in our neighborhood, now is the time to act and become a part of the HOA Board. HOA Board of Directors

Time to trim your tree branches over the sidewalk and street: Your tree branches hanging over the street need to be 14 feet up from the street to allow garbage trucks, delivery trucks, RV and campers to drive down the street without getting tree damage. School busses are also getting damage from low hanging tree branches, so please trim up your street trees.

For info packet call 281-363-0600 or email us at admin@hdas.biz

Exterior Home Maintenance -11 deed violations for home maintenance: Check your siding on the north side of your home for mold. Does the trim on your home need to be repainted? 4 homeowners were sent deed violation letters for having recreational vehicles/boats in public view: Section 9. No boat trailer, boats, travel trailers, inoperative automobiles, campers or vehicles of any kind shall be left unattended in the public street right-of-way. No boat trailer, boats, travel trailers, inoperative automobiles or campers shall be allowed to remain unmoved for more than 96 hours if in public view. Only operative/licensed automobiles, both passenger cars and pick-up trucks, will be allowed forward of the front building line for more than 96 hours. Storage of such items and vehicles must be out of public view. 15 homeowners have basketball goals in the street: Cypress Mill has 15 basketball goals in the street, these need to be removed from the street. Portable basketball goals are not to be stored in the street. They are to be positioned behind the front property lines. If you have any questions about storing your basketball goal, please contact me. Loose dogs in the neighborhood: Call the number below and tell them about the dog without a leash. You need to tell them that you feel for you and your child’s safety. They will send out an officer to talk to the owner. We have a couple of homeowners who have called this number and they did send someone to talk to the owner of the dog. They will take the dog for observation. This is the best way to get the dog owners to respond.

Cypress Mill

They will ask for the address of the owner and color and breed of the dog if you have it. Harris county veterinary public health, 281-999-3191. I would like to thank Dena Loughlin for organizing the newsletter every month. Dena is doing a fantastic job keeping up with all the homeowner events, meetings and postings for the newsletter. Thank you, thank you, thank you Dena, editor of Cypress Mill Messenger.

EASTER EGG HUNT

At the time of writing, the date has not been set but it will be a fun-ďŹ lled party time with more than enough eggs for everyone, pony rides, petting zoo, train ride, face painting, balloon creations, etc. and of course, the Easter Bunny. Volunteers are really needed for this event. If you can spare a couple of hours, please contact Mike or Krystal.

KIDS’ KORNER

If you would be interested in submitting an article each month for the kids’ page, please contact Mike or Krystal: m.crahan@pmghouston.com or k.salazar@pmghouston.com.

DATES TO REMEMBER

March 3rd: World Wildlife Day March 8th: International Women’s Day March 10th: World Kidney Day March 13th: Daylight savings time begins March 17th: St. Patrick’s Day March TBA: Easter Egg Hunt (date to be determined) March 20th: Palm Sunday March 25th: Good Friday March 27th: Easter Sunday

Basically, if you are making a change to your home or yard, you are required to submit a request. Some common requests are: • Installing a pool • Replacing windows, doors or shutters • Building a covered patio • Installing a storage unit • Installing an irrigation system • Replacing your roof • Painting your home/trim • Removing/replacing the trees in your front yard We also get a lot of requests about replacing your fence. This one is a little more complex. If you are replacing your fence with EXACTLY the same fence (in the same place with the same size boards and the same pattern), then you don’t need HOA approval. However, if you are CHANGING anything - the pattern of the fence (including installing rot board at the bottom), moving it, adding a gate or changing the material of your fence, then you need approval of the HOA.

AREA FOOD PANTRY

Do you know of someone who has trouble putting food on the table? Maybe their employment was suddenly terminated, maybe it’s a choice between medications or food; for whatever reason, people can find themselves in a situation where they need a little help.

Approval is based on the deed restrictions for your particular section of Cypress Mill. Each section has a different set and you should have received a copy for your section when you built or purchased your home. Please read them and know what is allowed and what is prohibited in our community.

Fountain of Life Church of God on Mueschke runs a food pantry on Mondays from 3:30-6 PM and the only stipulation is that the client should live in zip code 77433 and west of Skinner 77429. For more information, contact 281373-9337. Food donations are also greatly appreciated.

The approval process is easy. You can pick up the forms at the community center or you may find them online at www.cypressmillhoa.com. Simply complete the form, include a copy of your property map and samples of any materials like paint color or shingle color and a check for the $25 processing fee. The more information you include with the application, the faster and easier the approval process will be. If we have questions because you didn’t include all of the required information, it will slow the process down. Keep in mind that approval may take up to 30 days - plan ahead! Submit your application early, so that your project is not delayed.

ARCHITECTURAL CONTROL COMMITTEE

So you’d like to build an igloo? Or paint your house red and blue to pay tribute to your favorite sports team? These are easily identified as requests that would not be allowed in our neighborhood. But what are the kinds of things for which you need to submit a request for approval to the HOA?

8

February 2016

The ACC committee is made up of volunteer homeowners and our goal is to provide a beautiful and consistent look to our neighborhood.

Transplant balled and burlap, container-grown, bare-root deciduous evergreen trees, shrubs, roses and vines while still dormant. • Finish pruning roses. Weed and cultivate lightly all beds. Replenish mulch as needed. • Control early spring insects like thrips on glads and aphids on young tender growth. Spray with Malathion, Diazinon or Orthene. • At the end of February: peach, apple and pear fruit must be thinned to insure quality production at harvest. • Give groundcovers a haircut. They will spread faster. • Divide daylilies, daisies and other perennials now.

How would you feel if you saved a kid’s life? StandUp For Kids is an all volunteer organization dedicated to saving the lives of at-risk and homeless kids through volunteer outreach efforts. Our volunteers search the streets in order to find, stabilize and otherwise help homeless and street kids improve their lives. Every day throughout the US thirteen kids die on the streets from abuse, disease and suicide. According to recent statistics Houston has up to 2,500 kids living on the streets at any given time. Texas has the highest rate of homeless youth in the U.S. StandUp For Kids needs supplies for our Houston program, which provides food, clothing, counseling and a safe environment for the homeless youth of Houston. If you or your organization would like to hold a food or clothing drive for StandUp For Kids please contact me at HeatherE@standupforkids.org to learn more about StandUp For Kids or how you can help visit our website at www.standupforkids.org. The single greatest need, for homeless and street kids is our continuous caring and real support. We must convince them that we care, we want them back and we want to help them get off the streets.

SPECIAL CHEERS NEEDS VOLUNTEERS

Special CHEERS is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to providing Occupational Therapy to children with special needs of all ages living in and around the greater Houston area. Our facility is unique in that we utilize animals, including horses, dogs, goats, pigs, lambs and rabbits as an integral part of each child’s therapy treatment plan. Being a non-profit organization, we are constantly looking for extra help around the farm. Therefore, Special CHEERS would like to welcome all high school and college-aged students interested in working with both children and animals to volunteer after school, on the weekends or seasonally (i.e., summer camp). Please call our administrative assistant, Ms. Denise Pace, at 713-983-0075, for more information. A background check will be required of all individuals applying for a volunteer position at our facility.

FOSTER CHILDREN: PREPARATION FOR ADULT LIVING (PAL)

When foster children reach age 18, they are considered independent. That’s difficult for kids who have been wards of the state, with necessities arranged by caseworkers with state funds. Now they’ll have to figure out how to organize themselves and make their money last a whole month. Fortunately, Child protective Services offers them a program to help prepare for independence: Preparation for Adult Living (PAL). The year-long course culminates in an all-day workshop hosted by the National Council for Jewish Women (NCJW). The course is held at Junior Achievement’s BizTown, using computer kiosks sponsored by local businesses. Want to help with PAL or other NCJW programs that help change lives with hands-on community service? Contact info@ncjwhouston.org or see www. ncjwhouston.org.
