MESSAGE FROM YOUR HOA BOARD OF DIRECTORS
Greetings fellow homeowners and residents, From the many comments on the Cypress Mill Neighborhood Facebook page, it would seem the main item of interest this month was the peacocks. Rest assured that all the peacocks have been relocated to an area where they can enjoy freedom to fly without catching their legs in fence pickets and where they will receive treatment to any injuries where appropriate. It was encouraging to see so many homeowners come to the HOA meeting and it was a difficult decision for the HOA Board to make to have these beautiful birds relocated. This was handled at no cost to the HOA. As mentioned previously, there will be HOA Board positions opening up in April. If you are a homeowner and would like to be part of this team; please contact Mike or Krystal for more information. They can be reached at 281-213-3184. Mike and Krystal take care of the day to day operations of the community under direction from the HOA Board. 2016 assessment fees were due in full at the end of January. If you need to set up a payment plan, please contact Mike or Krystal as soon as possible. You will be surprised how quickly late and/or legal fees can mount up and much of this can be avoided with a payment plan. One of the ways in which our neighborhood keeps the house prices up is by deed restrictions and bylaws. Please be aware of the bylaws relevant to your section of Cypress Mill. They can found on the website. Also if you are thinking about making any changes to the outside of your property,
please visit our website: www.cypressmillhoa.com or www.pmghouston. com, to obtain the appropriate application forms BEFORE you begin any work. Once your request is submitted, you will receive any answer within 30 days, although the turnaround time us usually much less. Cypress Mill enjoys a much lower crime rate than many of our neighboring communities, due mostly to the fact that your HOA dues pay for additional security patrols. However, if you see anything suspicious, we urge to contact 281-376-3472 for non-emergencies or for a real emergency call 911. If you have a general question about our community and you want an immediate answer, do not rely on getting the answer from Facebook. Call Mike or Krystal and if they do not have the answer, they will make inquiries and get back to you. Your HOA Board of Directors
IMPORTANCE OF PROFESSIONAL PRUNING
by Mike Crahan Why Professional Pruning? • To improve a plant’s looks and help it keep the best shape and growth habit. • To prompt new growth, since plants respond to pruning by growing. Proper pruning also maximizes flowers and fruit. • To reduce foliage to what the roots can support on newly transplanted plants.

KRYSTAL SALAZAR - CYPRESS MILL EMPLOYEE OF THE YEAR
Krystal has been with PMG Houston for 2.5 years and with Cypress Mill HOA for 1 year. Krystal has brought new enthusiasm to the Cypress Mill Easter event, which was a huge success in 2015. The petting zoo and the “real Easter bunny” were a huge hit with all ages. Krystal has also contributed to the 4th of July event and Veterans Day celebration. Call Krystal now at 281213-3184 and tell her congratulations and thank goodness she is with us.
DOOR-TO-DOOR SCAMMERS
This story was passed on as a warning to our neighbors…
“My wife was approached at our house in Cypress Mill II earlier today by a young man claiming to be with a company called T&D Sales. He aggressively tried to sell her some cleaning products he was carrying with him. T&D Sales and its respective owner are well-known door-to-door scammers that have a long history of aggressive sales tactics and hundreds of filed complaints (available through a quick Google search). They use strong-armed sales techniques to pressure people into buying their product or giving out protected financial information. Often they leave the area once law enforcement take notice of their presence.” Unfortunately, these scammers visit our neighborhood too frequently. Please be aware of who you open your front door to.

ST. PATRICK’S DAY IN THE UNITED STATES
St. Patrick’s Day, on March 17th, remembers one of Ireland’s patron saints, St Patrick. It largely celebrates Irish-American culture in the United States. Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day Celebrations concentrate on Irish themed parties, drinks and food. Many people get into the spirit by dressing in green clothing and eating green colored food. Irish clubs and pubs often hold parties or have special deals. Large street parades mark St Patrick’s Day What’s Open or Closed? St. Patrick’s Day is not a federal holiday in the United States. Schools, businesses and organizations are open as usual. Public transport systems run on their regular schedules. There may be some local disruption to traffic due to St Patrick’s Day parades. This is particularly true in cities with a large Irish-American population, including New York, New Orleans and Seattle. The parades may be on or around March 17th, so it is a good idea to check local sources for the exact location, date and time.

About St. Patrick’s Day St. Patrick is one of Ireland’s patron saints and many Americans with Irish ancestry remember him on March 17th. Patrick’s Day is fixed on March 17th, but may occasionally be moved by Catholic Church authorities. This happened in 1940, so that the celebrations would not fall on Palm Sunday and in 2008 to avoid Holy Monday, the last Monday before Easter Sunday. Symbols The most common St. Patrick’s Day symbol is the shamrock. The shamrock is the leaf of the clover plant and a symbol of the Holy Trinity. Other symbols include: • Almost anything green. • The green orange and white flag of the Republic of Ireland. • Brands of beer associated with Irish culture. • Religious symbols include snakes and serpents. Other symbols seen on St Patrick’s Day include the harp, which was used in Ireland for centuries, as well as the leprechaun and a pot of gold that it hides.

ARCHITECTURAL CONTROL COMMITTEE
So you’d like to build an igloo? Or paint your house red and blue to pay tribute to your favorite sports team? These are easily identified as requests that would not be allowed in our neighborhood. But what are the kinds of things for which you need to submit a request for approval to the HOA? Basically, if you are making a change to your home or yard, you are required to submit a request. Some common requests are: • Installing a pool • Replacing windows, doors or shutters • Building a covered patio • Installing a storage unit • Installing an irrigation system • Replacing your roof • Painting your home/trim • Removing/replacing the trees in your front yard
need HOA approval. However, if you are CHANGING anything - the pattern of the fence (including installing rot board at the bottom), moving it, adding a gate or changing the material of your fence, then you need approval of the HOA. Approval is based on the deed restrictions for your particular section of Cypress Mill. Each section has a different set and you should have received a copy for your section when you built or purchased your home. Please read them and know what is allowed and what is prohibited in our community. The approval process is easy. You can pick up the forms at the community center or you may find them online at www.cypressmillhoa.com. Simply complete the form, include a copy of your property map and samples of any materials like paint color or shingle color and a check for the $25 processing fee. The more information you include with the application, the faster and easier the approval process will be. If we have questions because you didn’t include all of the required information, it will slow the process down. Keep in mind that approval may take up to 30 days - plan ahead! Submit your application early, so that your project is not delayed. The ACC committee is made up of volunteer homeowners and our goal is to provide a beautiful and consistent look to our neighborhood.

be sure to prune spring flowering shrubs after they have bloomed. • Fertilize with a pre-plant application of a slow-release fertilizer analysis such as 19 - 5 - 9 at the rate of 3 pounds per 100 square feet of garden planting area. FEEDBACK IS IMPORTANT
REMINDER ABOUT TRASH COLLECTION DAYS
Did you know we have our own Facebook page? You have to be a resident of Cypress Mill to join and it’s a really good location for instant information, whether you have lost/found a pet, seen something suspicious in the neighborhood, have questions about upcoming activities, etc.
Your feedback on anything you read or feel is missing from the Messenger is very important. Please feel free to contact your Community Manager, Mike Crahan, with any comments or suggestions. Also let Mike know if you would be interested in contributing any articles or information.
GENTLE REMINDER ABOUT PETS
ALL pets should be kept on a leash when not on your secured property. Make sure all fences are in good condition and be courteous to other walkers. We have not been notified of any serious incidents in quite a while, so let’s keep it that way.
Remember that there is NO trash collection, either regular or recycling, on public holidays: Christmas, Thanksgiving, Memorial Day, Labor Day, New Year’s Day, Independence Day, etc. Please do not leave trash at the curb expecting collection on those days. If you need clarification, contact Best Trash Services: http://best-trash.com. Trash will be picked up on the next regularly scheduled day: recycling and household trash on Mondays, household trash on Thursdays.
BOOK YOUR PARTY NOW
The meeting/activity room at the rec. center is available for birthday parties, wedding showers, baby showers, etc. Rental is $50 with a $300 deposit. Dates are filling up fast. Contact Mike Crahan for more information.
POOPER SCOOPERS
WHAT’S HAPPENING IN CYPRESS MILL?
MARCH GARDENING TIPS
The block captains are all listed in the Cypress Mill Messenger with either their phone number and/or email address.
Need we say more … We continue to receive complaints about residents having to clean up after a neighbor’s dog has left a message on their lawn. Please remember to carry a poop bag with you when taking Fido for a walk. Thank you.
VEGETABLES • Plant vegetables such as tomatoes, sweet corn and snap beans and pepper, as well as cucumbers, lima or butter beans, cantaloupe, okra (if the soil has warmed sufficiently - 70 degrees F. or higher), southern peas, pumpkin, squash, peanuts and watermelon.
Do you want to know what’s happening in your neighborhood without waiting for the Messenger? If so, please let your block captain have your email address so that they can keep you informed of current news and events.
If your street does not have a block captain, think about volunteering…. it’s a great way to get to know your neighbors and be one step ahead of the news. Contact Shalise at shaliselaw@gmail.com, if you would like to volunteer.
NEWSLETTER DEADLINE
LAWN • Re-sod or replant as needed with turfgrasses adapted to this part of Texas and suited to the planting location (shade or sun). • When resodding semi-shaded areas with St. Augustine, use ONLY the variety Floratam for best pest resistance. See www.plantanswers.com/grass. htm.
The deadline for submitting articles/information to the Cypress Mill Messenger is the 6th of the preceding month. Please email articles to: M.Crahan@pmghouston.com Information should be sent as an attachment in Word document format.
TREES AND SHRUBS • Plant container-grown trees and shrubs as soon as possible. In shady areas, where grass is difficult to grow, consider planting a dependable groundcover such as English ivy, Asian jasmine, vinca or one of the prostrate junipers. • Prune spring flowering and evergreen shrubs during early March. However,
Have you noticed a streetlight out? You can report it to CenterPoint Energy 24 hours a day at 713-207-2222. Choose a language preference and then select option “4” for street light outages. Please provide the streetlight’s six digit number located approximately 5 feet up the pole. Also, it is helpful to give the street name and address.

LIVESTOCK SHOW AND SALE GENERATES MORE THAN $500,000 FOR PROJECTS
Cy-Woods HIgh School
CFISD students are expected to raise more than $500,000 from the 22nd Annual CFISD Livestock Show and Sale, held February 4th - 6th at the CFISD Exhibit Center. The CFISD community showed an incredible amount of generosity in the live auction, freezer sale and via additional monetary contributions to students. The Premium Sale (live auction) unofficially raised $502,250. Final amounts from the Freezer Sale (animals not placing high enough for the live auction), Agriculture Mechanics silent auction and additional gifts to students are not yet available, but CFISD career and technical education coordinator Denise Kubecka mentioned that five records were tied or broken as grand and reserve champions sold.

CY-WOODS BOYS WIN DISTRICT WRESTLING TITLE
The Cypress Woods boys earned 240 points to clinch first place, followed by secondplace Jersey Village (210) and third-place Cypress Lakes (206). “They wrestled well. They got after it,” said Michael White, Cypress Woods head wrestling coach. “We had two goals for this tournament: the first one was to make weight; the second one was to compete. They made weight both days and they competed their butts off.” Trahan was named District 10-6A Coach of the Year after the tournament.

rosters for the 39th McDonald’s All American Games, to be played at the United Center in Chicago.
The McDonald’s restaurant located at 9715 Barker Cypress Road will hold a celebratory send-off event for Fox and Mulkey on Tuesday, March 8 from 4:30 to 6 p.m.
The girls’ game will tip off at 5:30 p.m. on ESPNU, while the boys’ game will start at 8 p.m. on ESPN. Fox, a 6-foot-3 guard who signed with Kentucky, will serve as CFISD’s first-ever male representative in the game.
Visit mcdonaldsallamerican.com for more information.
“I’m excited to represent Cypress Lakes and CFISD as a McDonald’s All-American. It’s one of many goals I set for myself coming into the season and it feels good to have accomplished it,” he said. “I’ve been told I’m the first male player to be a McDonald’s selection in our district, and I hope it’s a trend more players can follow.” Mulkey, a 6-foot-9 center who signed with Oklahoma, follows in the footsteps of former Cy-Fair High School stars and current WNBA standouts Nneka and Chiney Ogwumike, who played in the 2008 and 2010 McDonald’s All American Games, respectively. “When you look at the Ogwumikes, they’re going really far in their careers, and I want to do the same as them and continue to make a good name for Cypress,” Mulkey said. “I’ve wanted to make the McDonald’s All American team since my sophomore year. It means a lot and it’s a huge honor. I think it’s really awesome that De’Aaron and I are two athletes coming out of [CFISD] to play in the game. I think that says a lot about Cypress.”

CY-WOODS GIRLS WIN DISTRICT TITLE; FOUR TEAMS ENTER POSTSEASON
The District 17-6A girls’ basketball season concluded on Feb. 9 with four teams qualifying for the University Interscholastic League (UIL) playoffs. Cypress Woods High School won the district championship with a perfect 13-0 record, followed by co-runners-up Cy-Fair High School (10-3) and Cypress Falls High School (10-3) and fourth-place Cypress Ranch High School (9-4). “It’s rewarding. To be able to go undefeated in our district is an accomplishment for these ladies,” said Virginia Flores, Cypress Woods head coach. “It says a lot about their work ethic, time and sacrifice. The first playoff game out will be a big one for them, and we will have to see how they adjust.”
