Message from your HOA President Hello Neighbors,

November 2012

I love Fall with cooler temperatures, Thanksgiving and Christmas around the corner. I don’t enjoy raking the leaves, but it is all part of the cycle of life. One thing I will ask of you is that if you have not trimmed your low hanging trees that hang over the sidewalks, please do so. Many people walk in our neighborhood and the sidewalks belong to all of us. Those who are tall like me, appreciate not having to duck or get hit in the face with low hanging branches. This month, we have a section in the newsletter on holiday safety. I would also like to remind you about food and knife safety at Thanksgiving. Nothing will spoil a family get together like food poisoning or a trip to the hospital for a nasty cut or burn. Thanksgiving is also a time where a lot of people are traveling. Be careful out there. As you read on, you will see that the Board has continued to work to improve the neighborhood. The iron fences look great and I cannot wait to see the new Christmas decorations in place. The bows looked very nice in the pictures. As to the playground, two board members went out and surveyed different textures that were installed in other places. We have decided to start with putting in the artificial turf with a heat barrier at the playground near the Recreation Center. The remaining playgrounds will be considered in the coming years. We wouldn’t want to have to replace all of them at the same time in the future. In addition to researching the LED lighting replacement, we are also exploring a shade structure to cover the new cement area at the Recreation Center. When everything is in place, it will look really nice. Please note, that due to the proximity of the next two Board meetings to Thanksgiving and Christmas, the Board has decided to cancel the meetings in November and December. Our next meeting will be Wednesday, January 23rd at 7:00 PM. In the meantime, I am sure that the Board members will continue to have impromptu meetings and will remain in nearly daily contact with each other to ensure that the neighborhood runs smoothly. If you have any issues, please contact Mike via email, phone or just stop by the Recreation Center. Happy Thanksgiving, Dennis R Brewer, President, Cypress Mill Homeowner’s Association.

Deed Restriction Violations

There is no official deed restriction report this month. However, that does not mean there were no violations. Please, please remember to bring in your trash can as soon as possible after trash has been picked up and do not set out your trash before 6 PM the night before. If it is windy, be sure to secure your trash or recycle material so that it does not blow all over the neighborhood. There will not be a trash pickup on Thanksgiving Day. Pickup will be the following Monday.

Community meetings

Community meetings are held the fourth Wednesday monthly, with the exceptions of November and December, at the community clubhouse. Monthly, there is an opportunity for any homeowner to address the board of directors of the community. The board appreciates input from the community on decisions that affect the entire community. Dennis Brewer, President Cypress Mill HOA

• One of the goals of the Board is to keep up the value of the neighborhood properties. They have already painted all the wrought iron fencing, upgraded the pool slide, upgraded some areas that needed irrigation, trimmed the trees, added fitness equipment, put in new concrete and spray decking in the courtyard of the clubhouse on Mills Park Lane and ordered seasonal flowers for all the entry monuments. These are just a few items that are on the ongoing list of items. • Cypress Mill HOA Board is also investigating the installation of LED lighting throughout the neighborhoods, upgrading the pool decking at the Cypresswood Drive pool and installing new playground material. The Cypress Mill HOA Board is a volunteer Board and is always looking for volunteers for special projects. If you are interested in volunteering on any committee, please contact Mike Crahan: m.crahan@pmghouston.com • New holiday decorations. The holiday decorating committee received approval to spend $21,000 on new decorations. The current decorations were faded and falling apart. The three large entry monuments along Cypress Rose-Hill will get new “Holiday Bows” and all other entrance monuments will be decorated with new wreaths and/or garlands. This will be a welcome upgrade over the old decorations. • New playground turf: $32,000. • Door prize drawing for $25 to Home depot. The September winner was Susan Evans. • Cypress Mill utilities for the month of August amounted to $15,408.96. Stork Report / Honor Roll / Commendable Achievements

Do you want to acknowledge a local achievement, birth of a new baby or grandbaby, a family member returning home from active service, a special birthday, etc.? If so, email the information to M.Crahan@pmghouston.com and we’ll include it in the next issue of the Cypress Mill Messenger. Notices should be received by the 6th of the month to appear in the following month’s issue.

Making a Difference

Featured in this issue is long time resident Shirley Whitley.

Shirley served three 2-year terms on the HOA board, first as secretary, then as president and lastly as vice president. During this time, the HOA board went from being $50,000 in debt to having just over $1,000,000 in the bank. During her tenure on the HOA board, there were many changes; replastering of Cypresswood pool, the kiddie pool was remodeled, kiddie cushions were added to the playground area, tennis court were resurfaced and equipment updates, wrought iron fences were painted and the inside of the fitness room and the meeting room were repainted and recarpeted. Much research and committee meetings led to the beautification project on Cypress Rosehill and further meetings with Harris County resulted in the sale of right-of-way on Skinner which, in turn, led the HOA and MUD being able to construct the new fencing. Shirley was always very supportive of funds being set aside for community parties and until the current coordinators took over a couple of years ago, spearheaded the Easter Egg Hunt and Christmas Party with the help of other senior residents. By working with the builders of this neighborhood, the ceiling was lowered in the community center. If you remember, this was a big mess with the sound. A security system was installed in the community center and new equipment was purchased for the fitness room. Shirley has always been very detail oriented and jumped at any opportunity to save money for the community. Commented Shirley, “I was lucky enough to work with good board members and we were able to accomplish so much while I was on the board. I miss not being on the board and who knows, may run again next year.”

In addition to her HOA duties, Shirley served on the Federal Grand Jury for 18 months. Two years ago, she volunteered to start a chapter of Quilts for Kids for the Cypress area. A group of 10 or so women meet once a month at Quiltworks and make quilts for children who are hospitalized or have other illnesses. In the past two years, the group have made and distributed over 100 quilts to Texas Children’s Hospital, MD Anderson and to individual children who come to our attention and need a quilt to hold onto. They receive no funding and rely on the generosity of quilters in our area for the fabric we need to make these quilts. Any quilters who live in the area and wish to participate can join other quilters on the second Friday of the month from 10 am to 3 pm. For fun and to keep her out of trouble, Shirley can be found each Tuesday at Quiltworks being the Queen Bee of a quilting group, the SewBeeIts. Thank you and congratulations, Shirley; you truly are a good neighbor.

Neighborhood Christmas Decorations

Homeowners have been doing such a good job keeping front yards looking attractive during the summer months that it was difficult to choose a Yard of the Month for each section. Keep up the good work and don’t forget it will soon be time to start thinking about decorating your yard for the holidays. Each year, we see more and more homeowners creating festive yards and remember, Yard of the Month awards resume in December.

How to make Thanksgiving marshmallow pilgrim hats Place the chocolate striped shortbread cookies stripes down on a waxpaper-covered tray, spacing them well apart. Melt the chocolate chips in a microwave. Then stick a wooden toothpick into a marshmallow, dip the marshmallow into the melted chocolate, and center it atop a cookie. Using a second toothpick to lightly hold down the marshmallow, carefully pull out the first toothpick. Chill the marshmallow hats until the chocolate sets, then pipe a yellow decorators frosting buckle on the front of each hat. Your thanksgiving marshmallow pilgrim hat is ready. Editor’s note: I think Reese’s peanut butter cups would work well for the top part of the hat.

Helpful Home Holiday Safety Tips

• When purchasing an artificial tree, look for the label “Fire Resistant.” Although this label does not mean the tree won’t catch fire, it does indicate the tree will resist burning and should extinguish quickly. • When purchasing a live tree, check for freshness. A fresh tree is green, needles are hard to pull from branches and when bent between your fingers, needles do not break. The trunk butt of a fresh tree is sticky with resin, and when tapped on the ground, the tree should not lose many needles.

November 2012

Cypress Mill

• When setting up a tree at home, place it away from fireplaces and heaters. Because heated rooms dry live trees out rapidly, be sure to keep the stand filled with water. Place the tree out of the way of traffic and do not block doorways. • Cut a few inches off the trunk of your tree to expose the fresh wood. This allows for better water absorption and will help to keep your tree from drying out and becoming a fire hazard. • Use only noncombustible or flame-resistant materials to trim a tree. Choose tinsel or artificial icicles of plastic or nonleaded metals. Leaded materials are hazardous if ingested by children. • Never use lighted candles on a tree or near other evergreens. Always use nonflammable holders and place candles out of children’s reach. • Take special care to avoid decorations that are sharp or breakable, keep trimmings with small removable parts out of the reach of children to avoid the child swallowing or inhaling small pieces and avoid trimmings that resemble candy or food, which may tempt a child to eat them. • Wear gloves to avoid eye and skin irritation while decorating with spun glass “angel hair.” Follow container directions carefully to avoid lung irritation while decorating with artificial-snow sprays.

Bright Ideas for Lights

• Indoors or outside, always use lights that have been tested for safety by a recognized testing laboratory that indicates conformance with safety standards. • Check each set of lights, new or old, for broken or cracked sockets, frayed or bare wires or loose connections and throw out damaged sets. • Use no more than three standard-size sets of lights per single extension cord. • Never use electric lights on a metallic tree. The tree can become charged with electricity from faulty lights and a person touching a branch could be electrocuted. • Before using lights outdoors, check labels to be sure they have been certified for outdoor use. • Fasten outdoor lights securely to trees, house walls or other firm supports to protect the lights from wind damage. Use insulated staples to hold strings in place, not nails or tacks. Or run strings of lights through hooks (available at hardware stores). • Plug all outdoor electric decorations into circuits with ground fault circuit interrupters to avoid potential shocks. • Turn off all lights when you go to bed or leave the house. The lights could short out and start a fire.

Trouble-Free Toys

• Before buying a toy or allowing your child to play with a toy that he has received as a gift, read the instructions carefully. If the toy is appropriate for your child, show him how to use it properly.

• Follow recommended age ranges on toy packages. Toys that are too advanced could pose a safety hazard for younger children. • To prevent both burns and electrical shocks, don’t give young children (under age ten) a toy that must be plugged into an electrical outlet. Instead, buy toys that are battery-operated. • Children under age three can choke on small parts contained in toys or games. Government regulations specify that toys for children under age three cannot have parts less than 1 1/4 inches in diameter and 2 1/4 inches long. • Children under age 8 can choke or suffocate on uninflated or broken balloons. Remove strings and ribbons from toys before giving them to young children. • Watch for pull toys with strings that are more than 12 inches in length. They could be a strangulation hazard for babies.

Happy Visiting

• Clean up immediately after a holiday party. A toddler could rise early and choke on leftover food or come in contact with alcohol or tobacco. • Remember that the homes you visit may not be childproofed. Keep an eye out for danger spots. • Keep a laminated list with all of the important phone numbers you or a baby-sitter are likely to need in case of an emergency. Include the police and fire department, your pediatrician and the national Poison Help Line, 1-800-222-1222. • Traveling, visiting family members, getting presents, shopping, etc. can all increase your child’s stress levels. Trying to stick to your child’s usual routines, including sleep schedules and timing of naps, can help you and your child enjoy the holidays and reduce stress.

Garfield, Franklin Pierce and Zachary Taylor. • The following states were admitted as part of the United States: North Dakota, South Dakota, Montana, Washington and Oklahoma.

GARDENING TIPS FOR NOVEMBER

• Brown patch will continue to plague St. Augustine lawns as nights get cooler and humidity and rain continue. Discolored circles will appear in low areas almost overnight. Apply a fungicide recommended for brown patch according to label directions. Avoid walking through brown-patched turf. It spreads easily from the bottom of your shoes. If brown patch appears in the same lawn areas every year, add an inch or two of sandy topsoil to eliminate those low spots. • Fertilize St. Augustine turf with a winterizing formula to promote root growth over the winter months. Lower your lawn mover blades now and mow on a schedule that cuts no more than one-third of the grass blade away. • As chrysanthemums and other perennials finish blooming, cut flowering stalks to the ground to permit all strength to be used in making root growth. • Feed roses lightly, but avoid nitrogen fertilizers. Do not prune now. Keep up spraying program and water deeply. • Remove dead foliage and plant debris to help eradicate insects and disease organisms. Thin out and transfer volunteer seedlings. Beds made now will benefit by weathering before being planted. If soil is heavy, dig six inches deep, leave rough, cover with gymsum and strawy manure, water and allow to mellow.

• Bananas are more likely to bear fruit if the trunk does not die back in winter. Cut banana stalks back to six feet, wrap with newspaper and burlap. • Continue mulching for winter. Build up a thick top mulch to protect roots from freezing and winter drying. Don’t throw away those pine tree needles; they make great acidic mulch for azaleas, gardenias and next Spring’s impatiens. • Place pansies in beds after weather has cooled. Use a little blood meat mixed in soil under each plant. • Now is the best time to plant trees and shrubs.

St. Cuthbert Episcopal Church Thanksgiving Day service

The Cornerstone United Methodist Church (CUMC) will be hosting a Live Nativity on Saturday, December 8th, from 6-8 PM, as we transform the front area of the church into scenes that will depict the story of the birth of Jesus Christ. There will be shepherds with their sheep, the Three Wise Men and a camel, Mary and Joseph with baby Jesus in a manger and an angel portraying this holy event. You will be able to visually embrace this event as you drive through, read scriptures and listen to music that tell of the wondrous night. In the past, we have had several hundred cars that drive through to celebrate the true meaning of Christmas - the birth of Jesus Christ. We are located at 18081 West Road at Barker Cypress behind the CVS. For directions or more information, please go to our website at www.cornerstoneumc.org or call the church at 281-859-4141.
