MESSAGE FROM YOUR HOA BOARD OF DIRECTORS
Greetings fellow homeowners: At the risk of sounding repetitive, please contact your community manager, 281-213-3184, if you have not yet paid your 2015 HOA dues in full. By now, the amount you owe will have just about doubled, with legal and/or interest charges. You can avoid further charges by setting up a payment plan for the balance owing. It is with some regret that we say goodbye to fellow Board member, Jack Evans. He and his family are moving back north. We would like to thank Jack for his time on the Board and also on the Architectural Control Committee. We will miss you and your family, Jack. There have been a number of reports recently about brown/gray/yellow water coming from home faucets. Hopefully, this problem will have been solved by now. If you experience any problems with your water, you can contact the MUD on their website: www.cypresshillmud1.com. For urgent problems, the emergency number is 281-374-8989. This information is also listed on the 2nd page of this newsletter. For a true emergency, be sure to contact the MUD and not Eagle Water Management. A big thank-you to Bernadette Salvador. Bernadette has been writing copy for the “Kids Page” but has now decided to devote more time to volunteering at her daughter’s school. We have very much appreciated her time writing for the Messenger. If you would be interested in taking over this volunteer opportunity, please contact our community manager, Mike Crahan: m.crahan@pmghouston.com to set up a meeting with the Messenger editor.
Lastly, a reminder about the Architectural Control Committee. If you are making any changes to your property, including landscaping, you must send in an application. The forms and information are available from the community manager or from our website: www.cypressmillhoa.com. Remember… safety first as school buses come through our neighbor early in the morning and in the afternoons. Your HOA Board of Directors

ARCHITECTURAL CONTROL COMMITTEE
So you’d like to build an igloo? Or paint your house red and blue to pay tribute to your favorite sports team? These are easily identified as requests that would not be allowed in our neighborhood. But what are the kinds of things for which you need to submit a request for approval to the HOA? Basically, if you are making a change to your home or yard, you are required to submit a request. Some common requests are:
fee. The more information you include with the application, the faster and easier the approval process will be. If we have questions because you didn’t include all of the required information, it will slow the process down. Keep in mind that approval may take up to 30 days - plan ahead! Submit your application early, so that your project is not delayed. The ACC committee is made up of volunteer homeowners and our goal is to provide a beautiful and consistent look to our neighborhood.
CYPRESS MILL BOOK CLUB
Cypress Mills Book Club meets on the second Tuesday of each month at 1 PM, in the Recreation center on Mills Park Lane. Our informal discussions are open to adult residents of the Cypress Mill neighborhoods, so feel free to drop in as we welcome all book lovers to join us. For more information or to confirm meeting location, email Patti at patti. parks@sbcglobal.net or call 281-744-5771. We’ll be discussing these books at upcoming meetings:
• Installing a pool • Replacing windows, doors or shutters • Building a covered patio • Installing a storage unit • Installing an irrigation system • Replacing your roof • Painting your home/trim • Removing/replacing the trees in your front yard We also get a lot of requests about replacing your fence. This one is a little more complex. If you are replacing your fence with EXACTLY the same fence (in the same place with the same size boards and the same pattern), then you don’t need HOA approval. However, if you are CHANGING anything - the pattern of the fence (including installing rot board at the bottom), moving it, adding a gate or changing the material of your fence, then you need approval of the HOA. Approval is based on the deed restrictions for your particular section of Cypress Mill. Each section has a different set and you should have received a copy for your section when you built or purchased your home. Please read them and know what is allowed and what is prohibited in our community. The approval process is easy. You can pick up the forms at the community center or you may find them online at www.cypressmillhoa.com. Simply complete the form, include a copy of your property map and samples of any materials like paint color or shingle color and a check for the $25 processing

GENTLE REMINDER ABOUT PETS
ALL pets should be kept on a leash when not on your secured property. Make sure all fences are in good condition and be courteous to other walkers. We have not been notified of any serious incidents in quite a while, so let’s keep it that way.
POOPER SCOOPERS
Need we say more … We continue to receive complaints about residents having to clean up after a neighbor’s dog has left a message on their lawn. Please remember to carry a poop bag with you when taking Fido for a walk. Thank you.
GARDEN TIPS FOR SEPTEMBER
Time now to make plans for fall landscaping projects. • Clean up flowerbeds of fallen foliage, yellowed leaves and dead wood. Light green leaves may signify lack of iron (chlorosis). Correct with iron cheleates. • Cut off old dead foliage on irises. Scratch in a little bone meal around the roots. • Prune roses to reshape and groom plants for fall growth. Follow up with a dose of fertilizer the first week of September. • Plants come out of summer rest and go crazy. Insect populations explode as we get into cooler temperatures. Diseases that have been dormant wake up. - Citrus, croton, avocado and mango are susceptible to spider mites and thrips. Discourage them with a strong jet of water from a hose directed to the undersides of the leaves. - Hibiscus, citrus, palms, gardenia and ixora are susceptible to scale and mealybug. • Winter vegetable gardens and perennials get planted. • Wait until November to plant petunias and pansies. • Fire ants baits should be put out in September-October to lessen the number of eggs that make it to Spring. • St. Augustine grass gets its fall fertilizer during September. Continue to mow at maximum height. You want to leave a lot of leaf surface to produce carbohydrate reserves for the winter. • Keep an eye out for sod webworms. First sign of them is grass that appears to stop growing. You need to get them early for biological controls to work. When the caterpillars are only 1/4 inch, Bacillus thuringiensis applications can slow them. Bt is a bacteria that works on the caterpillars’ digestive systems and makes them stop feeding. Do the application late in the day.
Cypress Mill
The larvae feed at night and you want them to get nice fresh Bt. • When the heat and drought end, the weather could bring brown patch disease in the St. Augustine grass. Watch for yellowish spots if the nights drop into the 60’s and days stay in the 80’s. • Get any pruning of hedges and such done now. You want the flush of new growth to be hardened-off before the end of October. Tree pruning should be put off until winter, when the trees are dormant. • Pre-emerge herbicide applications targeting annual bluegrass and the earlier-germinating winter broadleaf weeds needed to be put out starting in mid-August.

5TH ANNUAL KENNEDY’S DISEASE GOLF SCRAMBLE
Please help support our drive for a cure or a treatment for Kennedy’s Disease aka Spinal Bulbar Muscular Atrophy. Last year, you allowed us to write a $32,000 check to the KDA, thank you so much. The 5th Annual KDA Golf Scramble will be held Saturday, September 26th at Cypress Lakes Golf Course, 18700 Cypresswood Drive, Cypress, Texas 77429. With your continued help and generous support, maybe we can reach our goal this year of breaching $100K (we are at $90K) No donation is too small and all are greatly appreciated! Kennedy’s Disease is a rare and currently incurable and non-treatable X-linked recessive genetic progressive neuromuscular disease. Both the spinal and bulbar neurons are affected causing muscle weakness and wasting (atrophy) throughout the body, which is most noticeable in the extremities (legs/arms), it is especially noticeable in the face and throat and causes speech and swallowing difficulties, major muscle cramps, as well as other symptoms.

HOUSTON FAMILY ARTS CENTER ASKS AUDIENCES,‘WHAT’S WRONG WITH THIS PICTURE?’ IN 2015-2016
“What’s wrong with this picture?” is the playful theme and question attached to each show in Houston Family Arts Center’s (HFAC) 2015-2016 season. Entering its 10th mainstage season, HFAC orchestrated a line-up of allencompassing shows that highlight the theatre’s award-winning musical expertise, all while enveloping theatre experiences full of odd, zany, mystical and dramatic turmoil audiences love. The first half of the season as follows: 2015 September 4-27, 2015: “Lend Me a Tenor” Set in the 1930s, hysterical chaos on a truly operatic level ensues when a world-famous tenor presumably goes missing on the biggest night in the Cleveland Grand Opera’s history.

Will the baker and his wife be able to break the witch’s spell?

November 27-December 20, 2015: “It’s a Wonderful Life” George Bailey spends his life giving up big dreams on behalf of his community. Overwhelmed by family obligations, George uncovers an opportunity to save his town but a mistake finds himself in a disparaging situation. George’s guardian angel, Clarence, who hasn’t earned his wings, takes George on a journey to discover his “wonderful life.”

The Flory Team’s Realtor® Tips to Beat the Heat without the A/C
COOL OVER PRESSURE
Wrap a damp cloth around your wrists, neck and feet. Keeping these pressure point areas cool actually brings your overall body temperature down!
BEDTIME CHILLS
Try using a damp (not soaking wet) sheet as your primary blanket. This technique was used by ancient Egyptians as a night-time cooling technique.
ICE, ICE BABY!
By freezing your bottled water, you can instantly cool your body by holding it to your skin then, once it melts, hydrate yourself with the melted water!
SUMMER BREEZE
Make yourself feel fine by adding ice to a large tub and using a standing fan to create your own personal A/C. This method is much more cost effective.
