AREA FOOD PANTRY
Do you know of someone who has trouble putting food on the table? Maybe their employment was suddenly terminated, maybe it’s a choice between medications or food; for whatever reason, people can find themselves in a situation where they need a little help. Fountain of Life Church of God on Mueschke runs a food pantry on Mondays from 6 - 8 PM and the only stipulation is that the client should live in zip code 77433 and west of Skinner 77429. For more information, contact 281-373-9337.
BACK TO SCHOOL SAFETY: MAKE IT A PRIORITY
As parents prepare for the start of a new school year, teaching children how to be safer needs to be at the top of their list of things to do. An analysis by the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children of attempted abductions during the past five years found that children are at most risk when going to and from school or school related activities. Parents and other adults can help keep children safe by following these ten tips: • Teach your children to always TAKE A FRIEND with them when walking or biking and stay with a group while standing at the bus stop. Make sure they know which bus to ride. • Walk the route to and from school with your children pointing out landmarks and safe places to go if they’re being followed or need help. Teach your children they should NEVER TAKE SHORTCUTS and always stay in well-lit areas. • It is not safe for young children to walk to and from school, even in a group. Parents should always provide supervision for young children to help ensure their safe arrival to and from school. If your children wait for a bus, wait with them or make arrangements for supervision at the bus stop. • Teach your children that if anyone bothers them, makes them feel scared or uncomfortable to trust their feelings and immediately get away from that person. Teach them it is ok not to be polite and IT IS OK TO SAY NO. • Teach your children if anyone tries to take them somewhere they should RESIST by kicking and screaming, try to run away and DRAW ATTENTION by kicking and screaming “This person is trying to take me away” or “This person is not my father/mother.” • Teach your children NOT TO ACCEPT A RIDE from anyone unless you have said it is ok in that instance. If anyone follows them in a vehicle they should turn around, go in the other direction and run to a trusted adult who may help them. • Teach your children that grownups should NOT ASK CHILDREN FOR DIRECTIONS, they should ask other adults. • Teach your children to NEVER ACCEPT MONEY OR GIFTS from anyone unless you have told them it is ok to accept in each instance.

• Make sure the school has current and accurate emergency contact information on file for your children and confirm names of those authorized. • Always know where your children will be. Teach your children to always CHECK FIRST before changing their plans before or after school. Teach your children to never leave school with anyone unless they CHECK FIRST with you or another trusted adult, even if someone tells them it is an emergency. Children should be taught to trust their feelings. They need to know that if someone makes them feel scared, uncomfortable or confused, they should tell a parent, guardian or trusted adult. TIPS TO INCREASE YOUR CHILD’S SCHOOL BUS SAFETY
Even safer than riding in your own vehicle, riding on a school bus is the safest way for your child to travel to and from school. The greatest risk is not riding the school bus, but approaching or leaving it, so children need to be especially careful around the school bus “danger zone,” which is the 10 feet in front, behind and on each side of the school bus. What Children Should Be Taught About School Bus Safety • Wait until the driver says it is safe to board. Then get on one at a time. • Once you’re off the school bus, walk five giant steps from the front of the bus, cross in front of the bus when the driver indicates it is safe, stop at the edge of the bus - look left-right-left again for traffic and if there’s not traffic, cross the street. • Ask the driver for help if you drop something while getting on or off the school bus. • Keep your loose items inside your backpack or book bag. • Once on the school bus, go directly to your seat and sit down facing forward. Remain in your seat facing forward when the school bus is moving. • Be respectful of the school bus driver and always obey his or her instructions. Tips For Parents • If your children ride the school bus, walk with them to the bus stop and wait with them untilthey get on the school bus. • Tell children to use the handrails when they get on and off the school bus and be careful of drawstrings and book bag straps that could get caught in the handrails and doors.

STREET LIGHT OUTAGE
Please report any street light outage to Centerpoint. Repairs can take up to 3 weeks to be repaired, but the most recent request we made took only 2 days! It is imperative that residents participate in reporting outages, as there is no formal nighttime inspection done by management or Centerpoint. It’s simple, just go to www.centerpointenergy.com/outage and fill in the required information. You’ll need the 6 digit number located at the base of the light pole and an approximate address/location of the outage. You may also report it by dialing 713-207-2222.
GARDEN TIPS FOR AUGUST
• Time now to make plans for fall landscaping projects. • Clean up flowerbeds of fallen foliage, yellowed leaves and dead wood. Light green leaves may signify lack of iron (chlorosis). Correct with iron cheleates. • Cut off old dead foliage on irises. Scratch in a little bone meal around the roots. • Prune roses to reshape and groom plants for fall growth. • Wait until November to plant petunias and pansies. • Chinch bug damage is obvious now. You will have areas of thin and/or dead turf where they weren’t brought under control. There is a new generation going now. This batch causes the most damage. Use Dursban to stop the damage. • Until the weather gets back to the 80’s, St. Augustine grass grows slowly. If you fill in with sod, don’t expect a fast turnaround. The sod may look like

it’s not growing while it puts down roots. You will need to water the new sod often and deeply to get it started but this also creates a disease environment. Water early so the sun can dry the turf. • Now is a good time to work new beds. Till them up, add organic material, mix it in, then let them cure for a month or so. Add in any amendments like micro-nutrients. Keep the beds moist so the microorganisms have a favorable environment.

previously served as a state party delegate and platform committee member at Texas Boys State, which had more than 1,000 student delegates. Zhou will represent Texas along with Michael McDowell of Providence Classical School. During their eight days at Boys Nation, 98 senators (two from each state with the exception of Hawaii) will learn from a hands-on approach how the U.S. Senate and the federal government function. Participants are divided into two political parties, the Federalists and the Nationalists, each of which conducts a party convention, sets a platform and nominates members for elected offices, including Boys Nation president, vice president and party leaders. Each senator will also write, introduce and debate a bill of his choosing before an appropriate Senate committee and if successful at that level the legislation will be voted on by the whole Senate. Bills passing the Senate are later signed or vetoed by the Boys Nation president. The young men also had an opportunity to tour the National Mall, including the Lincoln Memorial, Vietnam Wall and Korean War Memorial. They also presented a wreath at Arlington National Cemetery, saw the Iowa Jima Memorial and visited Capitol Hill for meetings with their state’s U.S. senators. They also had the opportunity to visit the Pentagon and the White House as well. In addition, delegates visited The American Legion’s Washington office to meet with lobbyists and subject matter experts and attend a dinner at a nearby Legion post hosted by National Commander Mike Helm of Nebraska. “I am extremely excited for this opportunity to not only represent CFISD, but the entire state of Texas, at Boys Nation,” Zhou said. “I hope that I will be able to apply the political insight I gain in my own community and my future endeavors.”

PETS
Talkative cat looking for a loving home! Benjamin is a shorthaired brown tabby cat, whose human mom recently died. He’s about 3 years old, he likes to sleep with his humans at night and he loves attention. Benjamin is pretty shy and gets easily startled, but he likes to go outside for a bit, as long as he can run right back in at the first sign of danger! He would do best in a quiet household because of his dislike of loud or sudden noises and he would love to be an only cat. Benjamin is up-to-date on rabies & flea treatment, litter-box trained and neutered. Contact 281-250-3266 to arrange a meeting.
