February 2016 AMERICAN HEART AWARENESS MONTH
Heart disease kills an estimated 630,000 Americans each year. It’s the leading cause of death for both men and women. In the United States, the most common type of heart disease is coronary artery disease (CAD), which can lead to a heart attack. You can greatly reduce your risk for CAD through lifestyle changes and in some cases, medication. Since 1963, February has been celebrated as American Heart Month to urge Americans to join the battle against heart disease. Since 2004, February also has been the signature month for the American Heart Association’s Go Red For Women campaign and the message that heart disease is not only a man’s problem.
HAPPY VALENTINE’S DAY - 24/7, 365
Valentine’s Day is just one day on February 14th. Why not make it Valentine’s Day each and every day by making those you love feel extra special, including yourself. Here’s how: 1. Create & share a vision of your dream life together. Make the fulfillment of your short term and long term needs the criteria for choosing a partner and being in a relationship. 2. Accept your partner just as they are. Your partner is a special person - the only one in the world like them, with their own wonderful traits and unique gifts. They are entitled to their own decisions, hobbies, goals and hopes. 3. Be generous and loving in all your dealings with your partner. Give unconditionally, rather than wanting something back in return. Instead, commit 100% to doing things for your partner and with zero expectation. 4. Always have integrity. Commit to tell your partner the total truth, as honesty is one of the key things people want in a relationship. Knowing they can trust you builds a zone of safety and comfort around them.
5. Resolve your differences as soon as they happen. Conflict actually fuels a genuinely passionate partnership. So accept responsibility for your part of the issue at stake and do not blame your partner. 6. Do not criticize. It is ok to complain but not criticize. Your partner is doing the best they can – support them in becoming an even better person. NEVER put your partner down in front of other people. 7. Create a haven for your partner. Make them feel so safe and secure with you that they drop all their defensiveness. Be considerate of your partner’s feelings and treat them with the utmost care and kindness. 8. Let go of the past. All relationships have their difficulties. Remember only the lessons learnt and forget the details. Weather the stormy moments and savor the memory of sunny days. 9. Have a fun date with your partner regularly and often. Give the relationship the same commitment you made when you first met - simply put each other first! - Courtesy: lifehack.org
CHINESE NEW YEAR FEBRUARY 8TH!
An estimated 1.4 billion people around the world will be celebrating the New Year on February 8, 2016. Chinese New Year, also known as the Lunar New Year, starts on the night of the second new moon of the winter solstice and ends 15 days later on the night of the full moon. During Chinese New Year, families gather to enjoy delicious foods and to wish each other good luck in the year ahead. Children are often given red envelopes filled with coins, though the money inside is not as important as the color and symbol found on the envelopes, which signifies happiness and good blessings. Each year, the New Year celebration is associated with an astrological animal. 2016 is the year of the Red Monkey, also known as the Fire

BEST SUPER BOWL PARTY EVER!!
Impress your guests by hosting the best super bowl party this year on February 7th. Here are some FOOD tips that may TRIM the waistline on this traditionally food fest football fun-day: 1. Create a Food Free space: Keeping snacks in another room will help everyone save calories. Plus not having the bowl of chips in front of the TV will curb mindless eating. 2. Low-cal foods first: Instead of bringing out the chicken wings right away, offer lower-calorie foods during the first half of the game, such as a spread of fresh veggies and a lightened-up dip. 3. Give classic recipes a healthy twist: Use nonfat Greek yogurt in place of sour cream for dips. Cook Buffalo-marinated chicken tenders instead of chicken wings: you’ll still get that finger-licking yumminess while slashing your intake of saturated fat and sodium. And skip the local pizza delivery; instead, set up stations for everyone to make his/her own healthier and tastier pizza at home. 4. Downsize your dishes. Downsize serving bowls from large to medium. Serve up the tortilla chips in a medium bowl rather than a large one. Same goes for the guacamole: serve that in a small bowl. 5. Be drink aware: choose taller skinny glasses instead of short wide ones. Bigger tip: serve only what your kiddo can enjoy! Courtesy: eatinwell.com

(plants), parsley, garden peas, radishes, rutabagas, spinach, tomato (seeds) and turnips. TREES AND SHRUBS • Finish all transplanting, get everything in the ground for a good spring spurt of growth. Transplant balled and burlap, container-grown, bare-root deciduous evergreen trees, shrubs, roses and vines while still dormant. • Finish pruning roses. Weed and cultivate lightly all beds. Replenish mulch as needed. • Control early spring insects like thrips on glads and aphids on young tender growth. Spray with Malathion, Diazinon or Orthene. • At the end of February: peach, apple and pear fruit must be thinned to insure quality production at harvest. • Give groundcovers a haircut. They will spread faster. • Divide daylilies, daisies and other perennials now.

FOSTER CHILDREN: PREPARATION FOR ADULT LIVING (PAL)
When foster children reach age 18, they are considered independent. That’s difficult for kids who have been wards of the state, with necessities arranged by caseworkers with state funds. Now they’ll have to figure out how to organize themselves and make their money last a whole month. Fortunately, Child protective Services offers them a program to help prepare for independence: Preparation for Adult Living (PAL). The year-long course culminates in an all-day workshop hosted by the National Council for Jewish Women (NCJW). The course is held at Junior Achievement’s BizTown, using computer kiosks sponsored by local businesses. Want to help with PAL or other NCJW programs that help change lives with hands-on community service? Contact info@ncjwhouston.org or see www. ncjwhouston.org.

If you have a little room in your heart and in your home (and your family pets are up-to-date on their vaccines and monthly heart worm preventative), then you are who we are looking for! There is no feeling in the world like the unconditional love you’ll receive from a rescued Dachshund, plus the friendships you’ll make when you join the DREAM Team! The more foster homes we have, the more Dachshunds we can save. Please help save a life and consider fostering today!
