HOW TO REUSE, RECYCLE AND GREEN YOUR AFTER CHRISTMAS WASTE
Want to get a P.H.D. in what to do with your P.H.W.? (That’s short for post-holiday waste in case you didn’t know.) While you may not have heard of the term (we kind of just made it up), we’re pretty sure you know what we’re talking about – the crumpled wads of gift wrap, the withering tree, that sweater from Aunt Mabel that was so ugly that it made a baby cry. Don’t worry if you’ve experienced any of these symptoms, however – P.H.W isn’t contagious, and there’s a quick cure – read on to check out our 5 easy tips for what to do with all that stuff after Christmas! 1. HAVE A SWAP PARTY You may not be in love with the fringed, mesh muscle shirt that one of your over-zealous co-workers gave you, but someone else might go gaga over it! Planning a swap party is simple – just invite a few favorite friends to bring over their unwanted gifts, serve some yummy snacks and beverages, and let the trading begin! For an added dose of excitement, play the classic gift-switching game White Elephant.
3. DONATE UNWANTED PRESENTS The most generous way to discard of unwanted toys, clothes and electronics after the holidays is also the easiest. Donate to local shelters, charities or Goodwill. Dropping items off on the way to do errands is a cinch and in many cases, pickups can be arranged free of charge. 4. RECYCLE OLD ELECTRONICS Before you trash your old TV, mp3 player or computer to make way for your newly acquired goodies, consider how dangerous e-waste is for the environment and for human beings. Check out the EPA’s page (www. epa.gov/recycle) on how to find e-cycling locations to dispose of your electronics safely and maybe even get you a discount on some new ones! 5. RECYCLE GIFT WRAP AND YOUR CHRISTMAS TREE This one’s a no-brainer but it still rings true. GARDENING TIPS FOR JANUARY
• Birds: Provide food and fresh water. More birds die from lack of water than from lack of food. • Cacti: Semi-dormant now. Reduce watering. • Camellias: Plants may be moved. Pick up and discard fallen blooms. • Cultivation: Changes in design may now be made, new beds dug and old ones rebuilt. Correct defects in drainage. Incorporate gypsum into heavy soils: repeat in three weeks. Dig granite dust, rock phosphate and quantities of organic matter into soil. Allow time for settling before planting. • Fertilize: Daylilies, spuria, Louisiana and bearded irises with complete fertilizer. Give strawberries 1 teaspoon ammonium sulfate, keeping six inches away from plant. Fertilize pansies with manure tea or blood meal. Water in. • Fruits: Plant fruit trees. Mulch figs with grass or straw to prevent freeze damage to crown. • House Plants: Water, when surface soil is crumbly dry. Wash dust off leaves to open pores. Mist often. Inspect for diseases and insects. Reduce water for poinsettias. • Lawns: Remove thatch aerate, and feed with low nitrogen mixture. • Pests: For petal blight prevention, spray azaleas and camellias as flowers open. Spray for scale with dormant oil solution if temperature will be above 35˚ and below 85˚ for next 48 hours. Always read and heed manufacturer’s directions before spraying. • Propagation: Ivy cuttings root easily this month and next. Root cuttings of shrubs in mixture of loam and coarse sand; keep damp and semi-shaded until rooted. • Prune: Fruit trees in advance of new growth. Prune to groom and shape. Do not remove too much. Remove dead wood from trees and shrubs before spring buds swell, but do not prune spring bloomers. Prune crape myrtles. Prune nandina and others of similar growth habit by cutting unwanted canes out at base of plant.

• Roses: Annual pruning about the middle of February, just before the spring buds break. To prevent later appearance of disease in the old beds, keep garden clean of debris and weeds. Complete preparation of new beds for roses. • Transplanting: January is one of the best months to transplant woody plants, both evergreen and deciduous, especially trees. Energy will be expended on roots instead of foliage. Learn ultimate size and cultural needs of tree or plant before buying. Consider dwarf varieties to avoid crowding later. Group plants of similar cultural needs. Do not work wet soil. Assure good drainage. Keep plants moist. • Vegetables: Prepare beds, preferably raised for drainage, with about 50% humus, including rotted manure. • Winter Protection: Expect freeze any time; plan for protection of tender plants. Water. Remove coverings, particularly plastic, when temperature rises. Protect low plants with dry leaves, pine needles or soil mulch, but remove when weather warms.

MAKING YOUR NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS STICK
Lose weight? Check. Start exercising? Check. Stop smoking? Check. It can be daunting when your list of New Year’s Resolutions is as long as your holiday shopping list. In addition to the post-holiday slump, not being able to keep your resolutions by February, March or even late January may increase your anxiety. When your holiday decorations are packed up and stored away, the frustration of an unused gym membership or other reminders of failed resolutions can make the later winter months feel hopeless. However, it is important to remember that the New Year isn’t meant to serve as a catalyst for sweeping character changes. It is a time for people to reflect on their past year’s behavior and promise to make positive lifestyle changes. “Setting small, attainable goals throughout the year, instead of a singular, overwhelming goal on January 1 can help you reach whatever it is you strive for,” says psychologist Lynn Bufka, PhD. “Remember, it is not the extent of the change that matters, but rather the act of recognizing that lifestyle change is important and working toward it, one step at a time.” By making your resolutions realistic, there is a greater chance that you will keep them throughout the year, incorporating healthy behavior into your everyday life. APA offers these tips when thinking about a News Year’s resolution: START SMALL Make resolutions that you think you can keep. If, for example, your aim is to exercise more frequently, schedule three or four days a week at the gym instead of seven. If you would like to eat healthier, try replacing dessert with something else you enjoy, like fruit or yogurt, instead of seeing your diet as a form of punishment. CHANGE ONE BEHAVIOR AT A TIME Unhealthy behaviors develop over the course of time. Thus, replacing unhealthy behaviors with healthy ones requires time. Don’t get overwhelmed and think that you have to reassess everything in your life. Instead, work toward changing one thing at a time. TALK ABOUT IT Share your experiences with family and friends. Consider joining a support group to reach your goals, such as a workout class at your gym or a group of coworkers quitting smoking. Having someone to share your struggles and successes with makes your journey to a healthier lifestyle that much easier and less intimidating. DON’T BEAT YOURSELF UP Perfection is unattainable. Remember that minor missteps when reaching your goals are completely normal and OK. Don’t give up completely because you ate a brownie and broke your diet, or skipped the gym for a week because you were busy. Everyone has ups and downs; resolve to recover from your mistakes and get back on track. ASK FOR SUPPORT Accepting help from those who care about you and will listen strengthens your resilience and ability to manage stress caused by your resolution. If you feel overwhelmed or unable to meet your goals on your own, consider seeking professional help. Psychologists are uniquely trained to understand the connection between the mind and body. Spaghetti Pizza
You could make this on National Spaghetti Day January 4th! INGREDIENTS: 1 (8 ounce) package spaghetti, broken into 2-inch pieces 1 egg, beaten 1/4 cup milk 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese, divided 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon garlic salt 1 (16 ounce) jar spaghetti sauce 1 teaspoon dried oregano 1/4 teaspoon dried basil 4 ounces pepperoni sausage, sliced DIRECTIONS: Preheat oven to 425 degrees F (220 degrees C). Grease a 9x13inch baking dish. Bring a large pot of lightly salted water to a boil. Add spaghetti and cook for 8 to 10 minutes or until al dente; drain and rinse with cold water. Combine egg, milk, 1/2 cup of the mozzarella cheese, salt and garlic salt in a large bowl. Stir in cooked spaghetti; mix well. Spread mixture into prepared baking dish. Bake in preheated oven for 15 minutes. Remove from oven and reduce temperature to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Spread sauce over spaghetti. Sprinkle with oregano, basil and the remaining 1 1/2 cups mozzarella. Top with pepperoni, return to oven and bake until cheese is bubbly and beginning to brown, about 30 minutes more. Let stand 5 minutes before cutting.

CFISD MENTOR PROGRAM
The CFISD Mentor Program is a cooperative effort of volunteers from businesses, faith-based and/or non-profit organizations, the community and the school district designed to encourage students (elementary through high school) to finish school and focus on future education and career goals. A mentor is a suitable role model committed to helping a student with his/her academic and social development. Currently, over 500 mentors are matched with students. To become a mentor, you must attend a training session (REGISTER); complete a global volunteer/mentor application and consent to a criminal history record check. Cy-Ranch High School CYPRESS RANCH KEY CLUB NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS
Key Club has been one of the most influential organizations for volunteering and has reached out to a multitude of countries by unifying students to help their community. They have continued to show their compassion through numerous volunteering events and their club has grown and spread worldwide. In 2016, the Cypress Ranch High School’s Key Club is planning to accomplish numerous service projects for various charities. The Cypress Ranch Key Club will undoubtedly keep expanding and staying together as a volunteering family. The first project they are planning to do is the “pie in the face” event in January. Students pay to see their fellow Key Club members get pied in the face! For every fundraising goal met, an officer of higher position will get pied. In January, they will prepare for a candy fundraiser by buying and stuffing bags of candy. The proceeds will help fund Key Club’s annual District Convention or DCON. They are also planning on raising items during a donation drive to fill disaster backpacks. In March, their Key Club is organizing a March of Dimes fundraiser to raise money by holding runs that people can donate and participate in. Our Key Club hopes to impact our community in a positive aspect as we continue to volunteer next semester and begin an awesome year of service.

We look forward to teaching your children the skills and watching them enhance their abilities. We will offer several evaluations (skills assessment) days so we can check on their skill level and even out the teams. The first evaluation will be Monday, Tuesday and Thursday Nights, February 22nd, 23rd and 25th, between 5-6:30 PM. The last evaluation will be Saturday, February 27th between 9-11 AM. It only takes a few minutes for us to run them through the drills and then we will contact each player the week before they begin practices. After Monday, February 29th, we cannot guarantee a place on a team. They will practice for one hour a week on a Monday, Tuesday, Thursday or Friday. In France, the consumption of all fats and fatty foods on this day coined the name “Fat Tuesday” or Mardi Gras. 8TH ANNUAL SALUTE TO OUR HEROES GALA
On February 13, 2016, the Cy-Fair Educational Foundation (CFEF) will hold its 8th Annual Salute to Our Heroes Gala at the Omni Hotel. Joe Myers Ford Lincoln is generously underwriting this gala that honors the brave men and women who have served to protect our freedom and liberty. Salute to Our Heroes has raised more than half a million dollars over the past seven years. Proceeds from this event have funded three endowed scholarships. CFEF was established in 1970 as a non-profit to raise money to fund a scholarship for high school graduates in the area. Over the past 45 years, the Foundation has grown tremendously through the efforts of the Board of Trustees and the generosity of the Cy-Fair Community. The Foundation has awarded more than $6 million in scholarships to 1300 graduating seniors. CFEF is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, all contributions are tax deductible, as allowed by the law. The 2016 Women’s Quarter Marathon is a women’s-only race to empower women and young girls through fitness and a healthy lifestyle. The route will start at Central Green Park, run through Cinco Ranch and back to Central Green Park where the post-race party will take place. The distance is a quarter of a marathon, which is 6.55 miles. The Mini-Quarter Marathon is 1.25 miles and is designed for girls under the age of 13 who also want to join the movement. Girls Inc. of Greater Houston’s mission is to inspire all girls to be strong, smart and bold by developing programs of informal education that empowers girls to live and succeed in an inequitable world.
