Water Conservation: Lawn and garden watering make up nearly 40 percent of total household water use during the summer. Finding ways to use less water will not only help conserve this precious resource, it will also save you money on your water bill. Avoid Overwatering: Watering too heavily or too often weakens your lawn and causes erosion and runoff pollution. Excess irrigation can also leach nutrients deep into the soil away from the plant roots, increasing the chances of polluting the ground-water. Similarly, runoff caused by excess irrigation can carry polluting fertilizers and pesticides to streams and lakes. Most lawns receive twice as much water as they require for a healthy appearance. Water should be applied to lawns infrequently, yet thoroughly. To know when it’s time to water your lawn, simply observe your grass. Wilting and discoloration are signs of water stress. At the first sign of wilting, you have 24 to 48 hours before serious injury to your lawn occurs. A general rule is to water one inch, once a week. An easy method for watering one inch is to place an empty 6-ounce tuna can on your lawn and stop watering when it is full. Watering infrequently but thoroughly also strengthens root systems, helping your lawn to efficiently use the water that’s stored in the soil. Water in the Morning: Watering in the morning will save water from being evaporated by the midday heat. Watering in the morning will also help your plants stay healthy, since watering late in the evening or at night keeps leaves wet for an extended period of time, which increases the chances of disease and some pests. Practice Grasscycling: Grasscycling refers to the practice of leaving grass clippings on the lawn to decompose into soil. Grasscycling will not only cut down on your watering needs, it will make your turf greener and tougher: it will prevent common turf diseases and reduce the need for lawn fertilizer. The key to grasscycling is to mow at the proper height and disperse the grass clippings evenly, so that they can work their way down to the soil. Mowing grass too short causes stress, discourages deep root growth and results in rapid loss of soil moisture. Mow often enough so that each mowing removes no more than one third of the grass blade. For example, if you set your cutting height at 2 inches, you should cut your grass before it’s more than 3 inches tall. When the mowed grass clippings remain on the yard, they can act as a slow-release lawn fertilizer, while also helping to retain soil moisture. This reduces the need for watering and can eliminate the need for fertilizer. This, in turn, helps to keep fertilizers out of storm drains and as a result, out of rivers, lakes and bays.

STREET LIGHT OUTAGE
Please report any street light outage to Centerpoint. Repairs can take up to 3 weeks to be repaired, but the most recent request we made took only 2 days! It is imperative that residents participate in reporting outages, as there is no formal nighttime inspection done by management or Centerpoint. It’s simple, just go to www.centerpointenergy.com/outage and fill in the required information. You’ll need the 6 digit number located at the base of the light pole and an approximate address/location of the outage. You may also report it by dialing 713-207-2222.

• Ruby is birthstone? Characteristic is Contentment? Flower is Water Lily? • American troops occupied San Juan Hill in the Spanish-American War on July 1, 1898. • Battle of the Somme began in World War I on July 1, 1916. • President James Garfield was shot on July 2, 1881. • Continental Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence and John Hancock signed it on July 4, 1776. • Japanese and Chinese troops clashed, beginning the struggle that became World War II on July 7, 1937. • Aaron Burr killed Alexander Hamilton in a duel on July 11, 1804. • District of Columbia established on July 16, 1790. • Scientists set off the first atomic bomb, Alamogordo, N. Mex. on July 16, 1945. • Spanish Civil War began on July 17-18, 1936. • First woman’s rights convention in United States met at Seneca Falls, N.Y. on July 19,1848 • U.S. astronaut Neil Armstrong became the first person to walk on the moon on July 20, 1969. • First Battle of Bull Run, or Manassas, in the Civil War was on July 21, 1861. • Truce was signed, ending Korean War on July 27, 1953. • Some famous people in history born in July: Thurgood Marshall, Composer George M. Cohan, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Stephen Foster, Calvin Coolidge, P. T. Barnum, John Paul Jones, John D. Rockefeller, John Q. Adams, Gerald R. Ford, Firearms inventor Samuel Colt, Ernest Hemingway, Amelia Earhart, Playwright George Bernard Shaw and Henry Ford. • The following were admitted as part of the United States: Idaho and Wyoming.
GARDEN TIPS FOR JULY
• Plant fall flowering annuals where your spring annuals have bloomed out. Set our seeds like zinnia, marigold, cosmos, petunia and portulaca so you’ll have color until frost. Don’t let seedlings dry out.
Cypress Ridge
• In summer, prune roses to keep them in shape. Continue black spot and insect treatments. Water 2” once per week. • Remove spent crepe myrtle flowers to prolong bloom production. • Weeds rob plants of valuable water, nutrients--remove them. • Great sun/heat-lovers include coral honeysuckle, coreopsis, lantana, oleanders and hamelia. • Fertilize flowers lightly, if at all; too hot for heavy feedings. • Water your lawn longer but less frequent. Deep water of about 2 - 3” per week forces plant roots to grow down, instead of sideways into sunbaked upper soil levels. Use a bowl in your yard to measure during waterings.
A POOL IS COOL, BUT ONLY WHEN IT’S SAFE
Pools make for great summer fun, but they can be an accident waiting to happen. Pools are a great way to beat the heat, but they can be dangerous. Drowning and waterborne infections are threats for adults and children alike. To make sure your memories of pools are happy ones, follow these tips from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP). Make safety a priority. It’s easier than you might think for someone especially a child - to accidentally fall into a pool. Children can also quietly make their way to a pool before anyone knows they’re missing. If you have a pool on your property, take these precautions: • Completely surround the pool with walls or fences that are at least 5 feet high. Make sure gates are self-closing, self-latching and out of small children’s reach. • If your house makes up the barrier of one side of the pool, equip doors leading from the house with an alarm that will sound if the door is unexpectedly opened. • For above-ground pools, secure or remove steps or ladders when the pool isn’t in use. • Consider using a power safety cover. The cover is a motor-powered barrier that can be placed over the water when the pool isn’t in use.

Stay Cool. Stay Comfortable. Save Money.
No service charge with major repairs. • Think about a pool alarm. The CPSC recommends an underwater alarm, which detects movement under the water, with remote receivers placed inside the house. Take extra precautions with children. Learning to swim is always a good idea, but according to the AAP, children aren’t developmentally ready for swimming lessons until at least age 4. Even then, swimming lessons don’t guarantee a child will be safe in the water. Keep these points in mind concerning pools and children: • Never leave a child alone in a pool, even for a moment. • Avoid air-filled “swimming aids,” such as water wings. They can give children a false sense of security. • Remove all toys from the pool after use so children aren’t tempted to reach for them. • Protect your child from sunburn by applying a sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 15. Reapply after swimming. • Make sure an adult is always within arm’s length whenever an infant or toddler is in the water. • If a child is missing, always check the pool first. Seconds count when a child has fallen in the water. Be prepared for an emergency. Ideally, no one will have a problem in your pool. But if they do, you need to be ready. • Keep rescue equipment, such as a shepherd’s hook (a long pole with a hook on the end of it) and a life preserver near the pool. • Make sure a telephone is at the pool when the pool is in use. • Make sure you or other adults watching young children in the pool know CPR and can rescue a child if necessary. Guard against infection. A pool is basically a bath that a lot of people share at once. As a result, germs can easily be transmitted, especially through fecal matter. While chlorine kills most germs, it can’t kill all of them. Some precautions are necessary. • Don’t get in the water if you have diarrhea.

• Never swallow pool water. • Wash your hands and bottom and those of your child, thoroughly with soap and water after having a bowel movement. • Take your child to the toilet for bathroom breaks often. • Change diapers in a bathroom, not near the pool. Germs can contaminate surfaces in and near the water. Have fun! Just a few safety precautions can mean the difference between a refreshing way to spend the day and an experience that may be painfully hard to forget. Be safe and you’ll get along swimmingly. www.christusstcatherine.org
Fun Facts About The Statue of Liberty
If you have ever visited the Statue of Liberty in person, you already know she’s an imposing figure, but consider the following fun facts: • Official dedication ceremonies held on Thursday, October 28, 1886. • Total overall height from the base of the pedestal foundation to the tip of the torch is 305 feet, 6 inches. • Height of the Statue from her heel to the top of her head is 111 feet, 6 inches. • The face on the Statue of Liberty measures more than 8 feet tall. • There are 154 steps from the pedestal to the head of the Statue of Liberty. • A tablet held in her left hand measures 23’ 7” tall and 13’ 7” wide inscribed with the date JULY IV MDCCLXXVI (July 4, 1776). • The Statue has a 35-foot waistline. • There are seven rays on her crown, one for each of the seven continents, each measuring up to 9 feet in length and weighing as much as 150 pounds. • Total weight of the Statue of Liberty is 225 tons (or 450,000 pounds). • At the feet of the Statue lie broken shackles of oppression and tyranny. • During the restoration completed in 1986, the new torch was carefully covered with thin sheets of 24k gold. • The exterior copper covering of the Statue of Liberty is 3/32 of an inch thick (less than the thickness of two pennies) and the light green color (called a patina) is the result of natural weathering of the copper.

The Liberty Bell, The Bell’s Message
The Liberty Bell’s inscription conveys a message of liberty, which goes beyond the words themselves. Since the bell was made, the words of the inscription have meant different things to different people. When William Penn created Pennsylvania’s government he allowed citizens to take part in making laws and gave them the right to choose the religion they wanted. The colonists were proud of the freedom that Penn gave them. In 1751, the Speaker of the Pennsylvania Assembly ordered a new bell for the State House. He asked that a Bible verse to be placed on the bell “Proclaim LIBERTY throughout all the Land unto all the inhabitants thereof” (Leviticus 25:10). As the official bell of the Pennsylvania State House (today called Independence Hall) it rang many times for public announcements, but we remember times like July 8, 1776 when it rang to announce the first public reading of the Declaration of Independence.

The old State House bell was first called the “Liberty Bell” by a group trying to outlaw slavery. These abolitionists remembered the words on the bell and, in the 1830’s, adopted it as a symbol of their cause. Beginning in the late 1800’s, the Liberty Bell traveled around the country to expositions and fairs to help heal the divisions of the Civil War. It reminded Americans of their earlier days when they fought and worked together for independence.

NATIONAL ICE CREAM DAY & ICE CREAM MONTH
July is National Ice Cream Month and the 3rd Sunday in July is National Ice Cream Day. In the USA, more ice cream is consumed per head than any other country in the world - such is the love of ice cream among Americans. This is reflected in other ways too, not least by the fact that the USA has its own “National Ice Cream Month.” Since 1984, when President Reagan proclaimed that National Ice Cream Month be celebrated annually, every July has been a focus for greater attention to ice cream in the United States with the 3rd Sunday of that month each year being National Ice Cream Day.

Parents Day
Kids, don’t forget that July 22nd is Parent’s Day!Make sure to let your parents know how much you appreciate them and maybe you could do something special that day to help out. Some ideas are: make a card telling them why you think they are such wonderful parents, clean your room without being told, help clean the table after dinner (if you are old enough, make dinner), help watch your younger siblings so mom and dad can get a break.
Summer Fun!
so Ma
In 1915, the bell made its last trip and came home to Philadelphia, where it now silently reminds us of the power of liberty. For more than 200 years people from around the world have felt the bell’s message. No one can see liberty, but people have used the Liberty Bell to represent this important idea.

HIGH-STAKES TESTING
During the April 12th Board meeting, the Cypress-Fairbanks ISD Board of Trustees passed a resolution calling for a re-examination of the public school accountability system by the Texas Legislature. The resolution states that standardized, high-stakes testing is undermining our mission to prepare students for competitive careers in the global arena. CFISD superintendent Dr. Mark Henry stated, “The educational system is overly dependent on high-stakes, standardized tests. Educators do support accountability, but at the same time, oppose the current system that does not support preparing all of our students to be productive citizens and leaders in a rapidly changing world. Standardized testing, as currently implemented, hinders progress toward a world-class educational system by driving instructional time.” It is the district’s responsibility to produce graduates who are college ready and flexibility is imperative to address quality career and technology education programs for those students who are not college bound. Unfortunately, with the requirements of the current state system, students have very little room in their graduation plans to explore vocational opportunities. Recently, the CFISD Community Leadership Committee (CLC), whose membership includes parents, business leaders and community members, endorsed the Board’s resolution, which calls for the review of the role of highstakes testing and its impact on schools. According to Stacye Anderson, CLC community chairperson, “The CLC unanimously agreed to support the CFISD Board of Trustees Resolution Concerning High-stakes, Standardized Testing of Texas Public School Students. We are so glad to see our district become the largest district in the state so far to join this movement to implore our legislators to rethink the current approach to assessment of learning.
Cypress Ridge
Although we are extremely supportive of holding schools accountable for teaching all Texas children, the current overemphasis on standardized testing impedes learning and the requirement that the grade on End-of-Course exams be weighted to count as 15 percent of the final course average for high school students is onerous.” Although promotion of high-stakes testing may be based in good intention, adopting the attitude that if a little testing is good, then a lot of testing must be even better is detrimental to our students and their futures. The lack of graduation plan flexibility and the over emphasis on high-stakes tests restricts student career options, which in turn negatively affects our state’s economy. Local school districts must have flexibility to prepare students for a variety of post-high school pursuits, including technical and vocational careers.

Large Animal Games, by Steve Yockey, directed by Matt Huff. Through July 14, 2012, STUDIO 101 (1824 Spring Street, Houston 77007). An incisive look at sex, love, bullfights, big-game hunting and intimate apparel. Large Animal Games takes a skewed but razor-sharp look at relationships by examining the romantic lives of several couples and the man who supplies each of them with intimate apparel. Museum of Dysfunction, August 9-18, 2012, STUDIO 101 (1824 Spring Street, Houston 77007). Kimberly Akimbo, By David Lindsay-Abaire, Directed by Ron Jones, November 29-December 15, 2012, STUDIO 101 (1824 Spring Street, Houston 77007). Kimberly Akimbo is a play written in 2000 by Pulitzer prize-winning playwright David Lindsay-Abaire. Its title character is a lonely teenage girl suffering from a disease a lot like progeria, that causes her to age 4 and a half times as fast as normal. Thus, Kimberly is trapped inside the frail physical body of an elderly woman. She meets another misfit (a teenage boy) and the two form an attachment to one another that borders on attraction. The situation is not helped by Kimberly’s rapidly deteriorating health. Soon Kimberly’s family gets mixed up in some crazy money schemes and the family gets emotionally destroyed.
