National Lemonade Day is a fun learning program that teaches today’s youth to become tomorrow’s entrepreneurs through operating lemonade stands throughout the nation. A successful stand requires group planning meetings to set goals, budgets, stand locations, recipes, marketing ideas and to select charities to make donations to. ACL took part in the National event and set up numerous lemonade stands all around the Houston area raising over $10,000. The ACL Copperfield chapter set up 3 lemonade stands in the Copperfield/Cypress area and alone raised $1,600 to donate to 10 different charities. On June 11th, the Copperfield Chapter presented Habitat for Humanity with a $489 donation. The balance of funds raised were distributed to other Houston-based charities. This could not have been done without the help of our location sponsors Walgreens, WalMart and Ace Hardware.
ALPHA CHARITY LEAGUE COPPERFIELD CHAPTER PARTICIPATES IN NATIONAL LEMONADE DAY
Alpha Charity League is mother/son organization for young men in middle school and high school who are committed to community service, becoming leaders and developing closer relationships with their peers and their mothers. The Copperfield chapter members were enthusiastic to support a city-wide effort in May, Lemonade Day, that supports a variety of Houston centered charities.
The boys from Copperfield made donations to the following charities: Texas Children’s Hospital, Citizens for Animal Protection, Houston’s Children’s Charity, Brighter Days Horse Refuge in San Antonio, Spring Spirit Baseball Program, Camp for All, Chris Saiz- Point the Way Foundation, Habitat for Humanity, Alpha Charity League and National Lemonade Day. Not only did the young men enjoy raising money for many good causes, but they also enjoyed a nice cool glass of lemonade whenever the scorching Houston heat decided to give them a good sweat. The young men would surely agree that the hard work put into making posters, perfecting the lemonade recipe, doing the heavy table lifting and standing under the sun, taught them the valuable lesson of hard work and the good feeling of giving back to our community.

NCJW welcomed new members at Pictures Plus Gallery. The event was organized by Marcia Pappert, Sharon Rance, Linda Caplan, Joyce Greenfield and Barbara Mandelstein. After presentations by each Branch leader, Governing Board Chair Joy Friedman introduced Shawna Murland of Pictures Plus. She described the works of Allan Rosenfield, whose unique work features large scale, multi-sided works on canvas that can be rearranged into many configurations. Joseph’s Coat is part of the permanent collection at Congregation Emanu El’s art gallery. The artist has said: “Each painting has its own way of telling me what it wants to be as it develops.”

His fascinating approach also explains why NCJW members perform Tikun Olam service helping others to expand their educational horizons, reverse their socio-economic situations and conquer their current adversity in order to move in life. They know that it is a group of Jewish women who help them. That makes us feel good!

THUNDERBRID COMPOSITE SQUADRON CIVIL AIR PATROL GETS A NEW HOME
The Thunderbird Composite Squadron Civil Air Patrol has transferred their program to a new home located at Bear Creek Community Center. The CAP Program previously met at the West Houston Airport. This arrangement is a win for our organization. As we have been able to expand our program with a larger meeting area and more access to the public eye. BCCC has welcomed the unit with open arms and this has been a great partnership for the West Houston Community. The local CAP program has two areas; one is for youth ages 12 through 21 and a senior program for those over 18 years of age. Both are very active and support different missions and roles throughout the Squadron. The Cadet program provides youth with a safe, encouraging environment in which to learn, mature and explore opportunities to help them reach their potential as adults. The Senior program gives adults a chance to mentor youth and support the cadet program and/or to be part of the emergency services and operations missions. . Cadets participate in a structured program through group and individual activities that include aerospace education, physical training, leadership and moral and ethical values. Seniors help support more than 90 percent of all inland air search and rescue that are tasked by the Air Force Rescue Coordination Center (AFRCC). Seniors can take flight in air crew which includes mission pilots, mission observers, mission scanners, airborne photographers. There is also opportunity for cadets and seniors to be part of ground crew, which includes: mission staff assistant, mission radio operator and ground team members and leaders. Thunderbird is actively recruiting for cadets and seniors from all walks of life. We need doctors, nurses, technical operators, computer programmers and IT, accountants, attorneys, public relations and many more! We have a place for YOU to serve! To find out more about Thunderbird Composite Squadron please visit tx179. org. The unit meets every Tuesday night from 6:45 PM to 9 PM at Bear Creek Community Center located at 1601 Clay Rd, Houston, TX 77084.

14TH ANNUAL NATIONAL CHARITY LEAGUE, INC., CYPRESS BELLES CHAPTER “SCAVENGER HUNT FOR FOOD”
The 14th Annual National Charity League, Inc., Cypress Belles Chapter “Scavenger Hunt for Food,” held in Coles Crossing on Sunday, October 27th, was a HUGE success. NCL, Inc. is a mother daughter organization that supports many philanthropies in our area. Our girls ages range from 7th to 12th grade and they work closely together as classes. Our goal was to restock the pantry of Cypress Assistance Ministries before Thanksgiving with non-perishable items such as boxed potatoes, stuffing, macaroni and cheese and cake mix - as well as much needed toiletry items such as deodorant, toothpaste and shampoo and conditioner. We collected 241 bottles of shampoo and conditioner alone. Doug and Donna Kurz of the Kurz “Good Bread” Company generously provided the bread delivery truck which served as transport for all the donations, as well as fresh baked buns for the Cypress Belles picnic lunch. The mothers and daughters of the Cypress Belles chapter of NCL, Inc. are extremely grateful for the outpouring of support from the residents of Coles

Crossing. Together, we were able to provide CAM with a total of 4, 474 items for the holidays. We are currently gearing up for other projects that support both Boys and Girls Country and TEAM (Tomball Assistance Ministries) for the holidays. For Boys and Girls Country, each class will be given a cottage with 8 girls living in it and will shop and provide gift cards for each girl in that cottage. The girls shop, wrap and deliver the gifts to Boys and Girls Country. There are 11 cottages at Boys and Girls Country and 8 children in each cottage. We feel blessed to support this organization. We recently provided cookies for Tour De Donut Bike Ride in which 750 riders participated and all proceeds went to Boys and Girls Country. For TEAM each of our classes will be assigned a family in need. As a class, our girls shop for the family from a list provided to us. Each of their gifts are also wrapped and delivered. Earlier this year the Cypress Belles collected donations of back packs and Walmart gift cards to kick off back to school items needed by TEAM.
HARRIS COUNTY COMMISSIONERS COURT GOES LIVE!
Harris County began live streaming meetings of Harris County Commissioners Court to the public in November, a step designed to make county government even more accessible to the public it serves. Anyone with access to the Internet can log on to www.harriscountytx.gov/CourtVideo.aspx and watch entire scheduled court meetings from the perspective of cameras mounted around the Commissioners Court courtroom. Links to the live streaming also will be posted on Harris County’s main website - www.harriscountytx.gov - under the “Court Agenda” heading. Harris County Judge Ed Emmett also intends to include a direct link to the live streaming from his website, www.judgeemmett.org. Members of Commissioners Court unanimously approved a proposal this summer to begin making its meetings available to the public by Internet as soon as possible. Officials with the county’s Information Technology Center then set to work implementing the policy and were able to complete the process quickly. The result is a more open and transparent Harris County government and a valuable research tool in having archived court meetings.
GET INTO THE CHRISTMAS SPIRIT
Christmas is supposed to be a time of peace, love and goodwill to all. But with all the stress and commotion of the season, many of us end up feeling more like Mr. Scrooge than Santa Claus. • Shop early. Nothing takes away the Christmas spirit like fighting for parking and struggling through crowds. • Wish people that you meet in stores and other casual environments a happy holiday. Say it with a smile. • Drop spare coins in the Salvation Army collection buckets. • Do something nice for someone. Offer to baby-sit so a friend can do her Christmas shopping, take cookies to your neighbors or rake an elderly neighbor’s yard. • Volunteer your time to a worthy holiday cause. Even if you are busy, you can spare an hour or two to help people less fortunate than yourself. • Organize a drive at work or in your neighborhood. Collect food and personal items and donate them to a local shelter for the homeless or for battered women. • Play Christmas music. • Watch Christmas movies. “It’s a Wonderful Life” is a good one for reviving a flagging Christmas spirit, as is “How the Grinch Stole Christmas.” • Read “A Christmas Carol” and “A Child’s Christmas in Wales.” • Decorate your house for the holidays. • Don’t spend more money than you have. Anxiety over after-Christmas bills can ruin your holiday. ehow.com

TAKE PRECAUTIONS AGAINST CRIME DURING HOLIDAYS
The holidays are busy times and our minds are preoccupied with shopping, baking, planning parties, church activities and so much more. The holidays are also lucrative times for criminals. Here are some tips for our residents: • Never leave packages or attractive items in a vehicle. Lock these in the trunk. Many car burglaries are occurring at various malls and shopping areas on the west and northwest side of Houston. • Try to shop with at least one other person. Stay together and be aware of your surroundings while in parking lots and in stores. • Watch your credit card and your driver’s license. When you pay for your purchases, you will often be asked for your driver’s license with your credit card; you will always have to present identification (usually a driver’s license) when you write a check. Yes, the lines are long and you want to hurry through your transaction, but don’t be tempted to engage in conversation or watch anything or anyone but the clerk processing your transaction. Both of these items should be within your sight at all times. Before you sign a credit card receipt, ask for your credit card and driver’s license. The holidays are great times for identity thieves and those who would steal your credit cards. Be very aware of what is happening when you pay for your purchase. Put everything away before leaving the purchase counter. • Never leave your purse in a locked or unlocked vehicle. Never set your purse down while shopping. Never put your purse in a shopping cart. Always have your purse in your hand or over your shoulder. To avoid purse snatching, cross the purse so that the strap is over one shoulder and the bag is hanging on the opposite side of your body. Men should carry wallets, check books and credit cards in the front pockets of their pants or in a shirt or interior suit pocket. • When going to your car with your purchases, check the lot for suspicious people. Carefully check around and glance under your vehicle. If a closed van is parked next to the driver’s door, slide in through the passenger side. Check the back seat and back floor before getting into your vehicle. If you are loading small children, lock your purse in the trunk with your packages
Cypress Community Newsletter
(keep the keys in your hand or pocket). After the children are secured, take another look around for suspicious activity before you open the trunk to get your purse. When you get into your vehicle, immediately lock the doors, start the engine and drive away. If you feel insecure going into the parking lot, ask for a security guard to accompany you. • When returning home, immediately pull into your garage. If this is not an option, park the car in the driveway and immediately unload all contents and lock the car. Stay alert during this process. • Do not put attractive packages next to windows that offer an easy view from the street. • When leaving your home for the evening, leave some lights and a radio or television turned on. Leave one outside light on. When you return home, check the sides of your house and the area across the street and adjacent to your home from your vehicle before parking. If you are a woman alone, get your house key ready before you exit your car. Lock your car as you are leaving it and immediately go to your door, unlock it, go inside and relock the door. • All homes should be equipped with long dead bolt key locks. Windows should be locked when you are not at home or are not awake. • If you are leaving for the holidays, ask a friend or neighbor to pick up the newspapers and your mail each day or file a stop delivery for these. Complete a vacation watch form at your local sheriff’s department’s storefront. By taking a few precautions, you will insure a safe and happy holiday for you and your family.

“I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ? We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through December. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.

CFISD CELEBRATES 75 YEARS
Cypress-Fairbanks ISD was consolidated on Dec. 9, 1939, which means our 75th Anniversary is around the corner. The actual anniversary date is Dec. 9, 2014 and various projects are currently underway to make it a memorable 2014 - 2015 school year. Details are now available on the CFISD website at www.cfisd.net/75. The first event of the celebration will be a Diamond Jamboree at the Berry Center in August, 2014. During this event, we will identify 75 honorees and we need your help. The anniversary honoree designation committee is looking for people or families who have significantly impacted the CFISD community and district during the last 75 years. We want to particularly identify those that have truly captured the anniversary philosophy: “Our children. Our schools. Our community.” Please consider submitting a nomination and review the attached application. For more information on the anniversary, email 75th@cfisd.net.

We are widely known in the Cy-Fair School District, Cypress community, throughout Texas and even nationally as we have set a reputation of excellence in national contests and have sent students with scholarships to colleges and universities throughout the country. We are under the artistic leadership of Cheryl Bradford (department head), Jane Bankston, Charles Page and Andrew Prince. Over the past 4 years, our students have performed to sold-out audiences for musical productions including Hairspray, Anything Goes, Legally Blonde and Shrek: The Musical. In addition to mainstage musicals, UIL competition, Fresh Faces, Comedy Sportz and various other workshops and performances throughout the year, our students annually attend our state’s Thespian festival. This past year, 28 students advanced to the National level and 8 of our students brought home 1st place honors. Needless to say, Cy-Ranch talent is exceptional and our team of directors have challenged our students to have the high bar of professionalism and passion to be and present their very best! CFISD Fine Arts programs do not receive financial support from our school district. Up to this point, our operating budget has been raised through patron attendance and various small-scale fundraisers. On February 8, 2014, the Cy-Ranch High School Supporting Theatre at Ranch (S.T.A.R.) Booster Club will host our first annual Mardi Gras Magic Auction & Gala Fundraiser. This large fundraiser will allow us to go above and beyond our basic operating expenses to help to ensure that we will continue to provide quality opportunities for our students. The generous support of businesses in our community plays a key role in the success of our program. Donations of merchandise and gift certificates are needed for our Silent and Live Auctions, as well as cash underwriting. Funds raised through Mardi Gras Magic 2014 will be used to help offset the expenses needed to send students to competitions, provide much needed technical equipment upgrades for our theatre and classrooms and allow us to bring in guest teachers for the continued growth of our program. We are actively seeking partners for this endeavor. Please consider how you can help. Please visit our website at www.cyranchtheatre.org for Gala tickets and details regarding supporting our program through donations for this event. Our Gala co-chairs are also happy to answer questions and provide additional information: Roxanne Stanley 281-414-7942 roxanne.stanley@sbcglobal.net Donna Schmidt 281-793-9625 donnaschmidt7@yahoo.com S.T.A.R. is recognized by the Federal government as an organization of the type described in section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. Contributions to our organization are deductible under section 170 of the Code.

BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA COPPERHEAD DISTRICT
For 100 years, Scouting programs have instilled in youth the values found in the Scout Oath and Scout Law. Today, these values are just as relevant in helping youth grow to their full potential as they were in 1910. Scouting helps youth develop academic skills, self-confidence, ethics, leadership skills, outdoor skills and citizenship skills that influence their adult lives. The Boy Scouts of America provides youth with programs and activities that allow them to: • Try new things. • Provide service to others. • Build self-confidence. • Reinforce ethical standards. Scouting provides youth with a sense that they are important as individuals while promoting activities that lead to personal responsibility and high selfesteem. As a result, when hard decisions have to be made, peer pressure can be resisted and the right choices can be made. Scouting provides a rewarding experience for boys ages 5 to 21. Scouting through the local Packs and Troops teach outdoor and life skills which help our youth Be Prepared. Your area is serviced by the BSA Sam Houston Area Counsel - Copperhead District which includes 23 Cub Scout Packs (boys 5 to 10 years old), 13 Troops (boys from 11 to 18 years old) and 10 Venturing units (boys and girls from 14 to 21). Our Units typically meet weekly.

We are a (ladies only) daytime chorus rehearsing every Friday morning from 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM at the Treemont Retirement Center, 2501 Westerland, near Westheimer and Gessner. Some of us read music, but it is not required. We are provided a CD to help in learning new songs. Our director, Martha Upton and assistant director, Cay Eckland, will help you find out if you are a Tenor, Lead, Baritone or Bass. We have been performing in the Houston area for over 35 years. We prepare two types of shows each year; a Christmas show with old favorites, but always a new fun tune including props, narratives and choreography. Our regular show this year includes songs from the 1920’s, as well as a Spiritual Medley that will start your toes tapping. Come visit any Friday we are not performing. We would love to see you and if you decide to join us, we would be delighted. For more information, please call Pat at 281-497-4904 or visit our website, www.Decibelles.org.
