Get Into the Christmas Spirit

Hanukkah

Christmas is supposed to be a time of peace, love and goodwill to all. But with all the stress and commotion of the season, many of us end up feeling more like Mr. Scrooge than Santa Claus.

In Judaism, the Festival of Lights, the Feast of Consecration or the Feast of the Maccabees; also transliterated Chanukah. According to tradition, it was instituted by Judas Maccabeus and his brothers in 165 B.C. to celebrate the dedication of the new altar in the Temple at Jerusalem. The festival occurs in December near the time of the winter solstice, as does Christmas and lasts eight days. Hanukkah later came to be linked also with a miraculous cruse of oil that burned for eight days, leading to the practice of lighting special Hanukkah candles, one the first evening, two the second and so on. The eight-branched candle stand (menorah) used in that ceremony is a frequent symbol for the holiday.

• Shop early. Nothing takes away the Christmas spirit like fighting for parking and struggling through crowds. • Wish people that you meet in stores and other casual environments a happy holiday. Say it with a smile. • Drop spare coins in the Salvation Army collection buckets. • Do something nice for someone. Offer to baby-sit so a friend can do her Christmas shopping, take cookies to your neighbors or rake an elderly neighbor’s yard. • Volunteer your time to a worthy holiday cause. Even if you are busy, you can spare an hour or two to help people less fortunate than yourself. • Organize a drive at work or in your neighborhood. Collect food and personal items and donate them to a local shelter for the homeless or for battered women. • Play Christmas music. • Watch Christmas movies. “It’s a Wonderful Life” is a good one for reviving a flagging Christmas spirit, as is “How the Grinch Stole Christmas.” • Read “A Christmas Carol” and “A Child’s Christmas in Wales.” • Decorate your house for the holidays. • Don’t spend more money than you have. Anxiety over after-Christmas bills can ruin your holiday. ehow.com

HAPPY Kwanzaa Kwanzaa is an African-American holiday created in 1966. It begins on December 26th and lasts through January 1st. The name Kwanzaa comes from the language of Swahili and means first fruits of the harvest. To prepare for the holiday, families decorate their homes with Kwanzaa symbols. A candle is lit for each day of Kwanzaa. A black candle is lit first, then red and green candles are lit alternately. There are seven principles of Kwanzaa, one for each day. They are Umoja or Unity, Kujichagulia or Self-Determination, Ujima or Collective Work and Responsibility, Ujamma or Cooperative Economics, Nia or Purpose, Kuumba or Creativity and Imani or Faith.

The right way to give • • • • •

Happy Holidays

Give with a cheerful heart. Give within your means. An expensive gift doesn’t mean it’s the best. Giving comes from your heart, not from the wallet. Some gifts are priceless... love, time, effort, encouragement, prayer, etc. Observe the needs and wants of the person you’re giving to. Consider his/her hobbies, lifestyle and what he/she wears. • Be creative, imaginative and crazy. • Shop for gifts early to avoid last-minute frantic rush.

1) Do not leave purchased items visible in the car-leave them in the trunk. 2) While shopping in the evening hours may be less crowded, there are also additional potential risks involved. Park in areas of parking lots that have adequate lighting. Consider shopping with someone rather than going alone. 3) Make sure purses and wallets are secure on your person and you are aware of their location at all times. 4) Keep the amount of available cash you have at a minimum or separate it into different pockets or locations on or about your person. This way all of it is not lost if your purse or wallet is misplaced or stolen. 5) Credit cards offer convenience and security, however, keep trackof all cards and keep receipts to compare to your monthly statement. 6) Remain aware of your surroundings at all times and move to and from your vehicle with confidence and “purpose.” Have keys ready before getting to your car so you do not have to search for them while standing near it. 7) Report suspicious people or activity to law enforcement imediately! 8) Most important is to reduce your own vulnerability and do what you can to minimize the possibility that you could be a victim of a crime or accidental loss.

Home Safety Tips While Away 1) Valuable items, such as televisions, stereos and computers should be inscribed with an identifying number unique to its owner (do not use your entire social security number). 2) Create an up-to-date home inventory including make, model, serial numbers, other detailed descriptions and photographs of items of value (including jewelry). This inventory should be kept somewhere safe, out of the house. 3) At least two light timers should be set to turn the lights and TV on and off in a logical sequence when away for an extended time period to give the appearance that someone is home. 4) The motion detector or other alarm system (if you have one) should be activated when you leave home. 5) Mail and newspaper deliveries should be stopped or arrangements for a neighbor/friend to pick them up should be made when you are away from home for a period of time. 6) Ask a trusted neighbor to tend the yard and watch your home when you are away or have a trusted friend or relative house sit in your absence. 7) Make sure all doors and windows are locked when you leave, even if you have an alarm system. by Sergeant Mitchell Hutter

GARDENING TIPS FOR DECEMBER • If a long flowering period is desired, pansies should be placed in their permanent beds not later than this month. Fertilize monthly with manure, super-phosphate or a liquid high-phosphate product. Keep flowers picked for more bloom. • Take tulips out of cold storage and plant late this month. • Fertilize established trees, spring-blooming shrubs, spurias and sweet peas (after they are a foot tall) with a fertilizer such as 13-13-13; Louisiana iris with cotton seed meal and manure. • Azaleas and camellias may be moved now. Keep moist to lesson cold weather damage. May acidify again. • Last month to plant early blossoming spring bulbs, speciosum and other varieties of lilies. Mulch. • Water plants well before a freeze; dry roots are easily damaged. • Don’t forget to provide food and fresh water for birds. More birds die from lack of water than lack of food.

CY-LAKES HIGH SCHOOL AND CENTRAL TAPE AND LABEL OF HOUSTON HAVE HEART For the past 8 years, Cypress Fairbanks ISD has supported the American Heart Association by participating in their annual Northwest Harris County Heart Walk. Since Cy-Lakes High School opened its doors, it has also played an important role in raising awareness and

funds for research and education. In addition to participating in the Heart Walk which was held Saturday, November 2nd, the students and staff at Cy-Lakes raised a record breaking $4,387.97 this year for the American Heart Association. One of the symbols that the Cy-Lakes Spartans proudly wear when they donate money for this great cause is a bright colored heart. These hearts are made possible by Central Tape and Label of Houston, a company which has generously opened up its heart every year to donate heart stickers to Cy-Lakes High School. Sarah Harty, principal of Cy-Lakes High School, expressed her appreciation for the students and staff at the school for their generous donations, as well as Central Tape and Label of Houston for helping to promote this worthwhile event.

CY-LAKES ART TEACHER’S WORK FEATURED AT UNIVERSITY MUSEUM AT TEXAS SOUTHERN UNIVERSITY Lee Ann Jackson, Cy-Lakes High School art teacher, saw her lifelong dream come to reality. The University Museum at Texas Southern University held an artist reception on October 28th, where nine pieces of Jackson’s work were on exhibit. Through encouragement from her parents, Jackson became the artist that she is today. She hails from the University of Houston, earning a Bachelor of Arts Degree and a Master of Education Degree. Previously, Jackson’s work was displayed at the Gremillion and Co. Fine Art, Inc., the Community Artists’ Collective, Lawndale Art Center, War’hous Visual Studios and East End Gallery. She has created chalk art murals in the Houston’s Via Colori Street Painting Festival for the past 5 years and she involves her students in various art venues.

Regarding her art, Jackson said, “My conceptual work consists of thoughts from the present moment and is illustrated through the use of mixed media. I often combine traditional and innovative techniques as it renews my creative process. I simply plan art around my daily influences.”

CY-LAKES COUNSELOR SOARS Cypress Lakes High School coordinating counselor Donna Dunn was nominated by the Navy Recruiting District of Houston as a Key Influencer of Youth. Key Influencers are defined as “people who help to shape attitudes and opinions of youth in their communities. People turn to Key Influencers for advice and information because they have credibility.” As a result of her selection as a Key Influencer, Dunn was chosen to fly with the U.S. Navy Blue Angels in the Wings Over Houston Airshow, October 27 th -28 th at Ellington Airport. Dunn flew in the C-130 “Fat Albert,” known as the operational workhorse of the Blue Angels, which travels as a cargo plane with the fleet from show to show. “Being nominated by the Navy Recruiting District, Houston, as a Key Influencer of Youth is a tremendous honor,” Dunn said. “Having been selected to ride with the Blue Angels on Fat Albert is absolutely thrilling! I am very excited to be given this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. I’ll be flying for all educators - counselors, teachers and administrators - who positively influence our students every day.”

CY-LAKES HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS SHOW VALOR

Several Cy-Lakes Spartans received honors recently. Cypress Lakes High School senior Lauren Longoria was selected by The Center for Hearing and Speech (CHS) to participate in the seventh annual Via Colori street painting festival Nov. 17th -18th, during which the streets of downtown Houston will transform into an unconventional art gallery. Longoria will join nine fellow emerging artists from Houston area high schools in the Via Apprendista section, each creating a 6-foot by 6-foot street art mural at the festival. Each high school artist has signed on to volunteer their time and talent for this local grassroots event in hopes of increasing public access to art. Via Colori attracts thousands every year with its distinctive and massive colorful chalk murals, celebrating the art of creativity and benefiting children with hearing impairments Cypress Lakes junior Chris Chen is a recent recipient of the President’s Education Award for Outstanding Academic Excellence. He also won an award for outstanding performance in the agricultural course livestock production. Chen states, “I want to always learn new things, gain new experiences and help people and animals and apply them all to my life to help bring the world into a better place.” Another Cy-Lakes junior was featured in the Campus Highlights section of the CFISD eConnection newsletter in October. Myy Nguyen was a member of the Science Olympiad state-qualifying team in 2012. She is a distinguished honor roll student and a recipient of Distinguished Achievement Awards in Geometry and World History AP. Myy says, “I hope to change the world through acts of kindness and the invention of a beneficial antidote to the world’s suffering. These have been my dreams since I was a child.”

CY-FAIR EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION HONORS MILITARY HEROES

The Foundation will kick off its fifth “Salute to Our Heroes” event on February 9, 2013 at the Omni Hotel Westside Houston. “Salute to Our Heroes” honors the brave men and women who have served to preserve our freedom and liberty. Proceeds from this event go to an endowment enabling graduating students from CFISD to attend college. The event will be generously underwritten by Earthcare Management and Kodiak Gas Services, as the Missing Man Underwriters. The Cypress Fairbanks Medical Center Hospital will be the Major General Sponsor.

This year our guest speaker is Steve Russell. LTC Steve Russell (Ret.) commanded the central unit responsible in the hunt and capture of Saddam Hussein. Through leadership and joint efforts across multiple teams, a large organization worked effectively to capture one of the world’s most notorious criminals. Russell is an American Hero. His proven leadership and problem-resolution techniques engage audiences through his storytelling.

Salute to Our Heroes has two purposes. First, to give tribute to our heroes - soldiers serving now, veterans and those who have been wounded or killed in action. We want to honor those who have served their country.

The second purpose is to raise funds for scholarships for Cy-Fair ISD students. Each year we give three scholarships per Cy-Fair ISD high school, and the number of high schools is growing. It has been a challenge keeping up with the demand, but CFEF is dedicated to this mission.

Call 1-855-351-GOLD

The inaugural event honors Jersey Village High School graduate 1st Lt. Jeremy E. Ray, who was killed Dec. 20, 2007 while serving his country in Iraq. A CFEF endowment was established in Jeremy’s memory by an anonymous donor. Last year the 1st Lieutenant Jeremy Ray Community Service and Peace Award was presented to Klein Funeral Homes & Memorials.

Following tradition, the event will have the Missing Man Table & Honors Ceremony. The table will have empty table settings with chairs leaning up against the table as though saved for someone. The table settings have a single red rose displayed in a vase in reminder of the bloodshed for our country and the vase was tied with a red ribbon - a symbol of the continued pledge to shed blood for our country. A slice of lemon on the bread plate is a reminder of the bitterness of the loss of comrades in arms; a bowl of salt to symbolize the tears shed by family members of lost loved ones and glasses turned upside down indicate no one will sit there. Last year’s ceremony was performed by the 75th Army Division Honor Guard and was proceeded by Taps performed by William Veenstra, Cy-Fair High School Senior. For more information on the 2013 event please contact Marie Holmes at marie@thecfef.org or 281-807-3591.

Tickets are only $20 or three for $50. Contact the theatre to learn how to get your raffle ticket. The drawing will be held during our Applause For Christmas celebration in December. Mark your calendars. On December 15th, we’ll be hosting Applause for Christmas. This one-night-only event will feature musical performances by talented young actors from Applause Theatre’s past and present productions, Christmas caroling, a silent auction, refreshments and a whole lot more. Mildred’s Umbrella Theater Company

2012-2013 Season Kimberly Akimbo, By David Lindsay-Abaire, Directed by Ron Jones, STUDIO 101 (1824 Spring Street, Houston 77007). Kimberly Akimbo is a play written in 2000 by Pulitzer prize-winning playwright David Lindsay-Abaire. Its title character is a lonely teenage girl suffering from a disease a lot like progeria, that causes her to age 4 and a half times as fast as normal. Thus, Kimberly is trapped inside the frail physical body of an elderly woman. She meets another misfit (a teenage boy) and the two form an attachment to one another that borders on attraction. The situation is not helped by Kimberly’s rapidly deteriorating health. Soon Kimberly’s family gets mixed up in some crazy money schemes and the family gets emotionally destroyed.

“I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ? We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through December. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.
