DEERFIELD VILLAGE PET HOT LINE MARIE NUGENT 281-859-1104
One very important thing you can do is have a collar with some form of ID and your phone number on it. Pet stores have special ID’s for your pets. Many pet owners are now “chipping” the pets. If found and taken to a vet, they can scan the chip and find the owner, just remember to change the info on it if need be. If your pet has a rabies tag, the vet has your name Deerfield Village December 2013

GARDENING TIPS FOR DECEMBER • If a long flowering period is desired, pansies should be placed in their permanent beds not later than this month. Fertilize monthly with manure, super-phosphate or a liquid high-phosphate product. Keep flowers picked for more bloom. • Take tulips out of cold storage and plant late this month. • Fertilize established trees, spring-blooming shrubs, spurias and sweet peas (after they are a foot tall) with a fertilizer such as 13-13-13; Louisiana iris with cotton seed meal and manure. • Azaleas and camellias may be moved now. Keep moist to lesson cold weather damage. May acidify again. • Last month to plant early blossoming spring bulbs, speciosum and other varieties of lilies. Mulch. • Water plants well before a freeze; dry roots are easily damaged. • Don’t forget to provide food and fresh water for birds. More birds die from lack of water than lack of food. December 2013

TAKE PRECAUTIONS AGAINST CRIME DURING HOLIDAYS The holidays are busy times and our minds are preoccupied with shopping, baking, planning parties, church activities and so much more. The holidays are also lucrative times for criminals. Here are some tips for our residents: • Never leave packages or attractive items in a vehicle. Lock these in the trunk. Many car burglaries are occurring at various malls and shopping areas on the west and northwest side of Houston. December 2013
Deerfield Village
• Try to shop with at least one other person. Stay together and be aware of your surroundings while in parking lots and in stores. • Watch your credit card and your driver’s license. When you pay for your purchases, you will often be asked for your driver’s license with your credit card; you will always have to present identification (usually a driver’s license) when you write a check. Yes, the lines are long and you want to hurry through your transaction, but don’t be tempted to engage in conversation or watch anything or anyone but the clerk processing your transaction. Both of these items should be within your sight at all times. Before you sign a credit card receipt, ask for your credit card and driver’s license. The holidays are great times for identity thieves and those who would steal your credit cards. Be very aware of what is happening when you pay for your purchase. Put everything away before leaving the purchase counter. • Never leave your purse in a locked or unlocked vehicle. Never set your purse down while shopping. Never put your purse in a shopping cart. Always have your purse in your hand or over your shoulder. To avoid purse snatching, cross the purse so that the strap is over one shoulder and the bag is hanging on the opposite side of your body. Men should carry wallets, check books and credit cards in the front pockets of their pants or in a shirt or interior suit pocket. • When going to your car with your purchases, check the lot for suspicious people. Carefully check around and glance under your vehicle. If a closed van is parked next to the driver’s door, slide in through the passenger side. Check the back eat and back floor before getting into your vehicle. If you are loading small children, lock your purse in the trunk with your packages (keep the keys in your hand or pocket). After the children are secured, take another look around

“I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ? We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through December. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.

CHIROPRACTIC HEALTH and WELLNESS CENTER for suspicious activity before you open the trunk to get your purse. When you get into your vehicle, immediately lock the doors, start the engine and drive away. If you feel insecure going into the parking lot, ask for a security guard to accompany you. • When returning home, immediately pull into your garage. If this is not an option, park the car in the driveway and immediately unload all contents and lock the car. Stay alert during this process. • Do not put attractive packages next to windows that offer an easy view from the street. • When leaving your home for the evening, leave some lights and a radio or television turned on. Leave one outside light on. When you return home, check the sides of your house and the area across the street and adjacent to your home from your vehicle before parking. If you are a woman alone, get your house key ready before you exit your car. Lock your car as you are leaving it and immediately go to your door, unlock it, go inside and relock the door. • All homes should be equipped with long dead bolt key locks. Windows should be locked when you are not at home or are not awake.

• If you are leaving for the holidays, ask a friend or neighbor to pick up the newspapers and your mail each day or file a stop delivery for these. Complete a vacation watch form at your local sheriff’s department’s storefront. By taking a few precautions, you will insure a safe and happy holiday for you and your family.
GREEN TIPS
1. The holidays are the best time to recycle. DON’T throw away a pile of stuff when it can find a use elsewhere and keep our landfills a little emptier (and save you tax money). • Excess paper and cardboard gift wrapping can be recycled at the local schools in the yellow and green bins. • Plastic packaging can be recycled using your curbside bins. • Clothing, shoes and household items can always be recycled through charitable organizations like individual church thrift shops, Salvation Army, Purple Heart, etc. Aside from helping your neighbor during the holiday period, you can also get a tax write-off for such contributions. Or you can sell gently used items at local resale shops (again, money in your pocket).
• Electronics can be recycled at the local Goodwill office on Hwy. 6, just south of West Little York. A tax write-off for your donation just before the end of the year is a bonus! • Old cell phones can be donated to local women’s shelters, who wipe them and donate them to women in danger of abuse. • Old eyeglasses can be donated Lion’s International (www.lionsclubs.org/EN/ our-work/sight-programs/eyeglassrecycling). Check with your optometrist, most optometrist offices collect glasses for donation to this program. 2. Twenty (20) things to recycle. Go to www.mnn.com/lifestyle/recycling/ stories/20-things-you-didnt-know-youcould-recycle for the complete article. Copied below are the first 7 things to recycle. We’ll continue this list in the next two newsletters. 1) Athletic shoes - Tired, broken-down, “fragrant” running shoes are most generally directed to the trash, but given our penchant for kicks, that’s a lot of sneakers stinking up the landfill. A better future for your athletic shoes is to introduce them to one of Nike’s Reuse-A-Shoe recycling bins (www.mnn. com/lifestyle/responsible-living/blogs/ recycle-your-athletic-shoes-at-nike). Nike in turn will incorporate them into the raw material called Nike Grind, which is used in everything from running tracks to shoe soles to zippers. 2) Bicycles - Americans send more than 15 million bicycles out to pasture every year. But rather than throwing them in the dump, you can give your old two-wheelers a second life by donating them to Bikes of the World (www.bikesfortheworld. org), which collects, refurbishes and donates bikes to lowerincome people and select institutions in developing countries. 3) Bike tools and gear - With a similar mission to Bikes of the World, Bikes Not Bombs (https://bikesnotbombs.org) takes bicycle bits, pieces and gear in addition to the bikes themselves. They accept parts, tools, broken components such as cracked frames, worn tires, tubes with holes, helmets, bags, lights, pumps, locks, cycle clothing, etc. They restore bikes and gear and deliver them overseas to economic development projects in Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean. Bikes that don’t get shipped often land in the group’s youth programs where teens learn bicycle safety and mechanic skills while earning bikes to keep for themselves. 4) Bras - There comes a time in every bra’s life when it just has to move on and bras aren’t generally the kind of clothing we women toss in the “to donate” pile. But the Bosom Buddy Program (www.mnn.com/lifestyle/natural-beauty-fashion/ blogs/recycle-your-bra), started by a textile recycling company in Arizona, wants your weary bras. After sprucing them up, they donate the revamped brassieres to women’s shelters or other programs that help women gain self-sufficiency. 5) Brita water filters - Ditching plastic water bottles for filtered water is a resourceful move, even if you are left with spent water filters. But if you use Brita products, you’re in uck (www. mnn.com/lifestyle/recycling/stories/save-brita-filters-forrecycling). They have teamed up with the company Preserve and between the two, they are recycling Brita plastic pitcher filter casings into Preserve’s eco-friendly, 100-percent recycled products such as toothbrushes, cups and cutting boards. Also cool: the activated carbon within the filters is regenerated for alternative use or converted into energy. 6) Carpeting - When it comes time to reveal the lovely hardwood floor buried underneath that mod shag carpeting, find Deerfield Village

a carpet-reclamation facility (http:// carpetrecovery.org) to take it for recycling. You can also check with individual carpet makers, many of which have recycling programs. 7) Compact fluorescent light bulbs - The mercury content makes CFLs a trickier disposal problem than basic bulbs, leaving many people confused about what to do with them once the light has been extinguished. But now both Ikea and Home Depot provide CFL recycling programs and other lighting stores are also beginning to accept these bulbs as well. If neither of these chain stores are nearby, see 5 ways to dispose of old CFLs for other ideas (www.mnn.com/ your-home/at-home/stories/5-ways-todispose-of-old-cfls). Do you like to sing? Are you looking for a place to display your talents or just to have fun with music? You should be a Decibelle! December 2013
We are a (ladies only) daytime chorus rehearsing every Friday morning from 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM at the Treemont Retirement Center, 2501 Westerland, near Westheimer and Gessner. We prepare two types of shows each year; a Christmas show with old favorites, but always a new fun tune including props, narratives and choreography. Our regular show this year includes songs from the 1920’s, as well as a Spiritual Medley that will start your toes tapping. Come visit any Friday we are not performing. We would love to see you and if you decide to join us, we would be delighted. For more information, please call Pat at 281-497-4904 or visit our website, www.Decibelles.org.

GIRL SCOUTS COPPER CREEK MEADOWS SERVICE UNIT
Copper Creek Meadows Service Unit held a “Taste of Girl Scouting” event in October for new Girl Scouts. The girls attending made beaded bracelets and began to learn the Girl Scout Promise and Law. Older Girl Scouts helped to teach some favorite Girl Scout songs, like “Princess Pat” and “Yogi Bear.” The audience participated in telling a story about Girl Scout founder Juliette Gordon Low Many thanks to all who helped with the event and all who attended! Our Leader/Daughter event took place early in November at Rocky River Ranch in Wimberley. Girls and their leader moms enjoyed some special time together in a variety of camp activities. The talent show and Dutch Oven cookoff are always popular events. Hiking, playing in the river and some time spent shopping in Wimberley helped round out the weekend. November also saw a chance for Girl Scout leaders to visit and learn from each other in a “café” event. Leaders have also been busy taking training classes and learning new skills. Those who attended the Council ETC (Every Thing Covered) may not actually have covered EVERYTHING... but there was certainly a lot to choose from!

“Serving the Katy area for over 7 years.”
in his family graduated from college, even though his parents made a meager living as custodians. Pham talks about viewing circumstances as opportunities. The ninth grade PACE classes sat engrossed throughout his presentation and asked lots of questions afterwards. One student commented, “This was exactly what I needed!”
CY-LAKES DIANA LOPEZ NAMED STUDENT OF THE WEEK
Among the many interesting stories he told, Pham spoke of how his family, consisting of two parents and ten children, split up as they escaped Viet Nam. After experiencing many remarkable events while traveling on boats at sea, including surviving on powdered milk and water for a period of time, Pham’s family eventually made it to America where they got an American family sponsor, which helped them settle in Port Arthur, Texas.
Cypress Lakes High School senior Diana Lopez was named student of the week and featured on the CFISD website during the month of November. Lopez has won numerous awards and accolades throughout her years in high school. Recently, she was selected by The Center for Hearing and Speech (CHS) to participate in the seventh annual Via Colori street painting festival, joining nine fellow emerging high school artists in the Via Apprendista section, creating a 6-foot by 6-foot street art mural.
One of the messages Pham drives home to students is that education is important to their futures. Eight of the ten children

orable mention for her art and writing. She has also been a Scholastic Writing American Voices Award Nominee and a Recognized Hispanic National Scholar. When asked about her passion and what inspires her, Lopez says, “I am passionate about languages; politics; social issues regarding race, gender and class; animals, literature and art. My inspiration spawns from different cultures and languages.” She hopes to attend the University of Texas at Austin and travel the world.
CY-LAKES SHOWS ITS BIG HEART, AGAIN!
CY-LAKES AP SHARES STORY OF THE AMERICAN DREAM WITH PACE CLASSES
Recently, Cy-Lakes Assistant Principal Hoang Pham shared his story of achieving the American Dream with ninth grade PACE classes. Beginning with his birth in Viet Nam, Mr. Pham relived the journey to America when his family escaped from Viet Nam in 1975 during the war. Using photographs in his Power Point presentation, Pham brought his journey to life for the ninth grade audience.

Cy-Lakes staff and students have shown their big hearts in a big way, again! Each year the school focuses on raising money for the annual Heart Walk to fight heart disease. This year the goal was $3,500. Principal Sarah Harty encouraged students and staff to donate, pointing out that if everyone just donated $1 each, the goal could be met. However, with the dedication of the PALS class, clubs, students and staff, Cy-Lakes raised $5,117.12, well above the goal that was set. As donations poured in, neon hearts were given out to donors. Each year, those donating money to the Heart Walk at Cy-Lakes receive a neon heart sticker to wear. For the past five years, Central Tape and Label has donated the neon hearts to Cy-Lakes High School. It is the combination of all these efforts that has resulted in CyLakes donating over $15,000 to heart research over the past years.
