deerfield village pet hot line marie nUgent 281-859-1104 Kittens and puppies are being dumped in Subdivisions and shopping strips. They will not find good homes. Most will be taken by the pound or shelter and those are overflowing with pets. They cannot help but have to euthanize some. You, as a responsible pet owner can be of great help by having your cat or dog spayed or neutered and not worry about finding homes for the offspring. You will have a healthier and happy pet. Another and very important thing you can do is have a collar with some form of ID and your phone number on it. Pet stores have special ID’s for your pets. Many pet owners are now “chipping the pets. If found and taken to a vet they can scan chip and find the owner. If your pet has a rabies tag, the vet has your name and #. The first thing I ask a caller is “does the pet have ID on it. If it does, I will help contact the # on the ID and get the pet to it’s owner ASAP. Or, the owner can pick up their lost pet. Having an ID on a pet makes life easier for all.

SUMMER LAWN CARE In summer, lawns get hammered. There’s extra wear and tear from weekend play, stress from summer heat and corresponding pressure to cut back on watering due to increased utility rates. But if you start a sensible lawn-care program now, you can strengthen your turf going into summer, help it stay greener and give it a better chance against the ravages of insects and disease.

Vegetable Grilling Tips: ** Spray the grill with non-stick cooking spray prior to heating the grill to help make clean up a snap. **Make sure your grill is medium hot. One way to test this is to place your hand over the grill. If you can hold it there for 4 seconds, the fire is medium hot. **Prevent your vegetables from drying out on the grill by soaking them in cold water first. **Vegetables should be cut to expose the most surface area to the grill. This helps them to cook quickly. Also, cut the pieces equal in size so they will cook evenly. For example: Cut your squash and eggplant into strips, not rounds, of the same width. **Use kosher salt or sea salt on your vegetables to bring out extra moisture. Seasoning with salt and pepper both before and after grilling helps to make them sweet and full of flavor. **Someone in the family doesn’t like grilled vegetables? Try this trick. Sprinkle a little sugar on the vegetables half way through the cooking. This gives them a wonderful caramel flavor. **Use tongs to turn your vegetables on the grill instead of a fork. You don’t want to puncture them, as it will release the moisture. **Smaller vegetables such as cherry tomatoes (we’ll just pretend and call this a vegetable) and small mushrooms might fall through the grill and should be skewered first. Thick onion slices should also be skewered all the way through to keep them whole while grilling. I like to use metal skewers instead of bamboo since they don’t burn and I can reuse them.

**Because vegetables lack fat, they need oil or some sort of liquid marinade to prevent them from burning and sticking to the grill. Brush them with a vegetable oil or flavored oil such as a prepared salad dressing prior to placing on the grill. You can also marinate them in a prepared dressing or your own marinade recipe. Grill Times and Techniques: Corn on the cob: Gently pull back the husks but keep them intact. Remove the silks and soak the cobs in cold water for 30 minutes. Dry and brush with butter or make your own compound butter by mixing together 1/4 cup butter (room temperature), 2 teaspoons ground chipotle pepper, and zest of one lime. Fold the husks back down over the kernels, twist the ends and place on the grill for 8-10 minutes, turning every two minutes. Serve with extra Chipotle, Lime Butter or have fun and invent other compound butters. Asparagus: Cut off ends and soak in water for 30 minutes. Brush with oil. Grill 2-3 minutes, or until tips begin to brown. Eggplant: Cut lengthwise into 1/2” slices. Brush with oil. Grill 2-3 minutes per side. Garlic: Cut the root end off of a whole bulb. Brush with oil and place cut side down on the grill. Grill 10 minutes, or until the skin is a dark brown. Onions: Remove skin and cut into 1/2 inch thick slices. Run a metal skewer through the entire slice. Brush with oil. Grill 5 minutes per side. Bell Peppers: Cut the pepper in half from top to bottom. Remove stems, seeds and ribs. Brush with oil. Grill 3-4 minutes per side. Zucchini or Summer Squash: Slice lengthwise into 1/2 inch thick slices. Brush with oil. Grill 4-5 minutes per side.

5

Cremini or Button Mushrooms: Wipe clean with a dry cloth. Thread on a metal skewer and brush with oil. Grill 8-12 minutes, turning every 2 minutes. Romaine Lettuce (for a quick grilled Caesar salad): Cut in half lengthwise. Brush with oil and place cut side down on the grill. Grill 2-3 minutes. Recipes: Try this sweet simple summer marinade recipe: 1 cup fresh orange juice 1 tablespoon soy sauce 2 teaspoon fresh ginger, minced 2 garlic cloves, minced Juice and zest of 1 lemon In a medium mixing bowl, whisk together all ingredients. Add sliced vegetables to the bowl, toss to coat and let marinate for 30 minutes. Remove from marinade and place on a medium hot grill to cook. Or this simple flavored basting oil: 1/2 cup canola oil 1/2 cup olive oil juice and zest from 2 lemons (substitute any citrus you have on hand)

3 teaspoons fresh rosemary, chopped fine In a small mixing bowl, combine all ingredients and allow to stand for 10-15 minutes so flavors will infuse. Brush on vegetables and place on grill to cook.

CYPRESS-FAIRBANKS INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT WWW.CFISD.NET IMPORTANT DATES July 4 – STuDENT/STAff hOlIDAy Th

HIGH-STAKES TESTING During the April 12th Board meeting, the Cypress-Fairbanks ISD Board of Trustees passed a resolution calling for a re-examination of the public school accountability system by the Texas Legislature. The resolution states that standardized, high-stakes testing is undermining our mission to prepare students for competitive careers in the global arena. CFISD superintendent Dr. Mark Henry stated, “The educational system is overly dependent on high-stakes, standardized tests. Educators do support accountability, but at the same time, oppose the current system that does not support preparing all of our students to be productive citizens and leaders in a rapidly changing world. Standardized testing, as currently implemented, hinders progress toward a world-class educational system by driving instructional time.” It is the district’s responsibility to produce graduates who are college ready and flexibility is imperative to address quality career and technology education programs for those students who are not college bound. Unfortunately, with the requirements of the current state system, students have very little room in their graduation plans to explore vocational opportunities. Recently, the CFISD Community Leadership Committee (CLC), whose membership includes parents, business leaders and community members, endorsed the Board’s resolution, which calls for the review of the role of high-stakes testing and its impact on schools. According to Stacye Anderson, CLC community chairperson, “The CLC unanimously agreed to support the CFISD Board of Trustees Resolution Concerning High-stakes, Standardized Testing of Texas Public School Students. We are so glad to see our district become the largest district in the state so far to join this movement to implore our legislators to rethink the current approach to assessment of learning. Although we are extremely supportive

of holding schools accountable for teaching all Texas children, the current overemphasis on standardized testing impedes learning and the requirement that the grade on End-of-Course exams be weighted to count as 15 percent of the final course average for high school students is onerous.” Although promotion of high-stakes testing may be based in good intention, adopting the attitude that if a little testing is good, then a lot of testing must be even better is detrimental to our students and their futures. The lack of graduation plan flexibility and the over emphasis on high-stakes tests restricts student career options, which in turn negatively affects our state’s economy. Local school districts must have flexibility to prepare students for a variety of post-high school pursuits, including technical and vocational careers.

The Cypress-Fairbanks community raised more than $108,000 for student scholarships during the Cy-Fair Educational Foundation (CFEF) B.F. Adam Golf Classic, held May 17th at Blackhorse Golf Club. A total of 296 golfers and 50 volunteers participated in the event - one of the largest non-celebrity tournaments in Houston. “This year’s tournament was another huge success for CFEF. The community once again came out in full support to make the tournament the best yet,” said Marie Holmes, director of the CFEF. Lead underwriters for the tournament were the Cypress Fairbanks Medical Center Hospital and the B.F. Adam Family. Platinum sponsors included Linebarger Goggan Blair & Sampson, LLP and Bay-IBI Group Architects. On the North Course, CTG, Inc. placed first, followed by secondplace McCall Gibson Swedlund Barfoot and third-place Purcell Construction. On the South Course, Automated Logic placed first, while Bay-IBI Group Architects placed second and Daltile placed third. The tournament was named after Bernard Fred Adam, a lifelong Cy-Fair resident and a devoted school board member who served 24 years on the board. Adam Elementary School is named in his honor. The golf tournament has always garnered great support from the community, raising more than $1.7 million for student scholarships since its inception.

Pink Tie Affair Fundraiser

In order to make our fundraiser as successful as possible, we are looking to the good neighbors of our Community for their support. There are many ways in which you can contribute to the Pink Tie Affair as either a sponsor or a donor. The Zeta Tau Alpha Foundation is a not-for-profit, tax-exempt organization as defined by the Internal Revenue Code, Section 501(c) 3 and all qualified donations made to ZTA Foundation are tax-deductable, so please consider helping us make a difference in the lives of women everywhere. The Pink Tie Affair fundraising event, through the ZTA Foundation, supports breast cancer education and awareness, the Komen Race for the Cure® Survivor program, scholarships, educational programming and leadership development. Through our affiliations with The Susan G. Komen Foundation, Yoplait, The NFL and Self Magazine, the ZTA Foundation has donated millions of dollars to this worthy cause. As one of the leading causes of death in women, breast cancer affects us all. We had a great turnout for last year’s first annual, raising $7000 toward our cause and anticipate an even better 2012. If you are interested in purchasing tickets or other ways of contributing to the event, please contact Natalie Taylor at daisemail@comcast.net or www.cypresszta.com, our website. We hope to have your support and to see you there!

“I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ? We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through July. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.
