Kittens and puppies are being dumped in Subdivisions and shopping strips. They will not find good homes. Most will be taken by the pound or shelter and those are overflowing with pets. They cannot help but have to euthanize some. You, as a responsible pet owner can be of great help by having your cat or dog spayed or neutered and not worry about finding homes for the offspring. You will have a healthier and happy pet. Another and very important thing you can do is have a collar with some form of ID and your phone number on it. Pet stores have special ID’s for your pets. Many pet owners are now “chipping” the pets. If found and taken to a vet they can scan chip and find the owner. If your pet has a rabies tag, the vet has your name and #. The first thing I ask a caller is “does the pet have ID on it.” If it does, I will help contact the # on the ID and get the pet to it’s owner ASAP. Or, the owner can pick up their lost pet. Having an ID on a pet makes life easier for all.

BOY SCOUTS
EaglE’s NEst
There’s no better organizational partner for parents of sons than the Boy Scouts of America (BSA). Just ask Kent and Debbie Brown. They have spent a combined fifteen years in the scouting program and raised a nest of Eagles. All three sons, Nick, Gabe and Ben have achieved Scouts highest honor, the rank of Eagle Scout. While service requirements and badge amounts have fluctuated over the past century, the Eagle remains the highest honor, an honor that fewer than 5% of Scouts will obtain. A requirement of 21 merit badges, at least three leadership positions and an Eagle Scout project - all before the age of 18 is necessary Nick Brown began his Scouting career at Fiest Elementary School in Pack 421, then bridged to Troop 202 at Labay Middle School. For his Eagle project, he raised funds to buy supplies and organized fellow Scouts in rebuilding and painting a wooden fence at a local church to help the preschool reach accreditation requirements. Nick is a graduate of Cypress Falls HS. He obtained a Bio-Medical Engineering degree from Texas A&M University and currently attends Baylor College of Medicine. Gabe Brown began his Scouting career at Lamkin Elementary School in Pack 1591, then bridged to Troop 1296 at Cornerstone United Methodist Church. For his Eagle Project, he raised funds to buy paints and supplies to repaint United States and Continent Maps and lines for hop scotch and basketball courts on the school hard top at Lowery Elementary. Gabe Brown recently graduated from Langham Creek HS and is attending TAMU Mays Business School. He looks forward to working with youth this summer at Sky Ranch in East Texas and utilizing some of his outdoor skills. Following his brother’s footsteps, Ben Brown began his Scouting career at Lowery Elementary in Cypress Fairbanks, then bridged to Troop 1296 at Cornerstone United Methodist Church. He raised funds and shipped over 600 miniature flags, treats and toiletries to our men and women in the military. After shipping his supplies, he was thrilled to receive many letters of thanks and a phone call from a retired New York policeman embedded with our military in Afghanistan on New Year’s Eve. At his recent Court of Honor, Ben was honored to receive a flag that was flown over Baghdad from a local serviceman, Sgt. Marc Maziarz of Copperfield. Ben is completing his second year of High School at Langham Creek and hopes to attend TAMU in two years. There is no end to the Eagle Scout trail. CYPRESS-FAIRBANKS INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT WWW.CFISD.NET IMPORTANT DATES July 4th – Student/Staff Holiday
CFEF EARNS SPOT ON TOP 20 NATIONAL EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATIONS LIST A recent study conducted by Dewey and Associates looked at the 50 largest school districts in the nation to determine which of the districts’ Educational Foundations were doing the best job of supporting education. Cy-Fair Educational Foundation made the list, coming in at number 15 in the nation!
CFISD RECEIVES H-E-B EXCELLENCE IN EDUCATION AWARD Cypress-Fairbanks ISD was named the large district winner during the H-E-B Excellence in Education Awards ceremony honoring outstanding public schools. Recognized for outstanding commitment to student achievement, parental and community involvement and professional development opportunities for teachers and administrators, CFISD was chosen for the award among five large district finalists and earned a $100,000 cash award. “I’m fortunate to be a part of a district with a lot of special people who make a large school system feel like a tight-knit community,” said Dr. Mark Henry, superintendent of schools. “It’s gratifying to accept an award that recognizes the positive impact of public education in Texas.” During the ceremony, Hamilton Elementary School principal Dr. Catherine Bartlett was chosen among 10 finalists as the winner for the statewide Principal Award, honoring the top campus leaders
8
and achievers in the state. Bartlett, who was selected as a finalist for the award in March, received a $10,000 cash prize and a $25,000 grant for Hamilton Elementary. “It is an honor to receive the H-E-B Excellence in Education award. I am so proud of our Hamilton staff and students and I love having this opportunity to brag on them a little more,” said Bartlett. “Next week we will begin gathering student ideas for the use of our school’s prize money. I love visiting with the children and working with them to make Hamilton the best school it can be.” H-E-B launched the Excellence in Education awards program in 2002 in cooperation with the Texas Association of School Administrators (TASA) as a positive way to support public education in Texas. In its 11 years, the program has generated more than $5.5 million to educators, schools and districts across the state. More than 4,000 nominations were submitted at the beginning of the year for the award, which resulted in 800 completed applications submitted by nominees that were reviewed by judges from the Colleges of Education at Trinity University and Texas State University. Judges narrowed the field to 148 teachers, 47 principals, 19 early childhood facilities and 25 school districts, which competed in the regional judging process in February. Five regional judging panels comprised of former winners, administrators and university and community leaders selected the 40 individual statewide finalists, while the district finalists were selected by separate judging panels that reviewed their written applications and conducted individual site visits. All finalists were invited to Houston for the awards celebration and special reception in their honor. During their stay, the teachers and principals participated in personal interviews with the statewide judging panel to determine a winner.

“I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ? We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through June. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.

Artistic Director David Rainey will direct and the cast includes Jennifer Gilbert, Zachary Lewis and Chuck Hutchison. The production also features Lighting Design by Riana Canetti-Rios and Sound Design by Travis Ammons. A young couple, Nick and Colby, have all the expectations that most of us dream of about our child to be. But what they have achieved through their coupling is so shockingly far from their expectations that it is hard to believe. Coming to terms with that reality takes them on a life altering and often humors journey of self-discovery and acceptance. Two-time Emmy Award winner, Rachel Axler, forces her characters and us, to come face to face with our fears, our shortcomings and ourselves in this poignant dark comedy about parenthood.

During the 2012-2013 school year, students from all across the world will have the opportunity to travel to Houston and surrounding communities to spend the entire school year in the United States, learning and working with American Families. In order for the students to come to the U.S. they must have proper host families lined up. Now is a crucial time of year for the Ayusa program as local staff coordinators to find local host families for the upcoming school year. The Ayusa program is celebrating its 30th year this year and is responsible for more than 60,000 students from 75 different countries spending the school year in the United States. With the current school year quickly coming to an end Ayusa’s local staff is busy looking for families for students for the 2012-2013 school year. Many families are needed and with the schools having deadlines and limits for foreign exchange students, the earlier the better. It also gives the families and students time to get to know each other via skype, facebook, etc. while waiting for their year abroad to start. For more information and requirements, please contact Heather Wells by phone 281-770-3414 or by email ayusakaty@gmail.com.

The main goal of the NWHC Aggie Mom’s Club is to raise money to provide scholarships for area students attending Texas A&M University and also to provide funds that support on-campus organizations at TAMU. Along with this we also provide support, information and develop great relationships with other Aggie Moms. This summer the Aggie Mom’s Club will be hosting “Summer Mixers” throughout many Northwest Harris County neighborhoods in order for new Aggie Moms to meet current Aggie Moms. Check out our website at www.nwhcaggiemoms.org for more information or connect with us on Facebook. Regular meetings begin in August and are held the second Tuesday of the month at the Houston Distributing Company, Inc. at 7100 High Life Drive and Cutten Road near SH 249. Come join

natIonal HuRRIcanE PREPaREdnEss ExERcIsE command Post EstablIsHEd The incident command post is up and running at West Houston Airport for the U.S. Northern Command exercise Ardent Sentry. The 25-member incident command staff will be using new technology and field testing local plans for the hurricane disaster preparedness exercise. Ardent Sentry will evaluate existing plans, policies and procedures of various civilian and military agencies, including two CAP wings - Louisiana and Texas. The exercise scenario begins with a massive tropical storm named Zelda predicted to become a major hurricane on a direct path toward the Gulf Coast. The North American Aerospace Defense Command, U.S. Northern Command, U.S. Army North and Federal Emergency Management Agency also will play important roles. The Texas Wing’s Group IV Advanced Ground Team has arrived at the command post and will soon be dispatched to the evacuation zone to assist local officials with radio communications and emergency services as needed. Plans are also under way to launch an aircraft for predisaster photo missions using CAP digital and multidirectional, full-motion video cameras. CAP personnel from across Texas and Louisiana are en route to the command post for this exercise, which is expected to last several days. The incident commander at West Houston Airport is Lt. Col. Rick Woolfolk of the Texas Wing.
