beans, cantaloupe, okra (if the soil has warmed sufficiently - 70 degrees F. or higher), southern peas, pumpkin, squash, peanuts and watermelon. LAWN • Re-sod or replant as needed with turfgrasses adapted to this part of Texas and suited to the planting location (shade or sun). • When resodding semi-shaded areas with St. Augustine, use ONLY the variety Floratam for best pest resistance. See www.plantanswers.com/grass.htm. TREES AND SHRUBS • Plant container-grown trees and shrubs as soon as possible. In shady areas, where grass is difficult to grow, consider planting a dependable groundcover such as English ivy, Asian jasmine, vinca or one of the prostrate junipers. • Prune spring flowering and evergreen shrubs during early March. However, be sure to prune spring flowering shrubs after they have bloomed. • Fertilize with a pre-plant application of a slow-release fertilizer analysis such as 19 - 5 - 9 at the rate of 3 pounds per 100 square feet of garden planting area. Early March is the ideal time to fertilize landscape plants because you give them food just before the spring growing season starts.

CY-LAKES HIGH SCHOOL

CY-LAKES ORCHESTRA STUDENTS ARE TOP PERFORMERS

In February, 61 orchestra students from Cy-Lakes High School performed at the region Solo and Ensemble contest at Cypress Springs High School. Although many students received a 1st division on their solo/ensemble performances and received medals, for the first time, five students qualified for performing at the State Solo Ensemble to be held at University of Texas in May. The qualifying students are Brandon Estrada, Denarius Terry, Jesse Serpas, Trey Dadzie and Oscar Kitmanyen. These students practiced for months and memorized lengthy pieces of music. Natalie Purdy, director of orchestras at Cy-Lakes, states that all the students get critiqued by a certified judge and receive feedback and a rating. This is a great accomplishment for these young people. Currently, the Cy-Lakes orchestras are preparing to perform at UIL in April and at Disney.

on a Stocking Stomper Showcase each year at Cy-Lakes. Discount tickets are offered at the annual step show when patrons donate canned goods or toys for Katy Christian Ministries. This is the fifth year the team has sponsored the Stocking Stomper Showcase and each one has been a great success. Each year the Step Team collects loads of can goods and toys for needy families during the holiday season. Mr. White says, “Many people don’t realize that YMPA is not just about stepping. YMPA stands for “Young Men for Positive Action”, so we are a service organization first and foremost. We only step as a bonus activity.” Last year, the team was awarded the Community Service award at the district step competition because they had the most service projects of any high school YMPA/YLPA team. Cy-Lakes is proud of these young men who step out to help the community!

CY-LAKES STEP TEAM STEPS UP TO HELP The Cy-Lakes Step Team, under the direction of Andrew White, does more than give excellent step performances. The team, officially known as Lambda Nu Theta, is part of YMPA (Young Men for Positive Action) and is making concerted efforts to reach out to the community and make a difference. Recently, the team went to Third Ward and cleared an overgrown lot to create space for a community garden. They also volunteered at the Houston Food Bank where they sorted through donations to remove expired or damaged products and group like products together. Lambda Nu Theta participated in the heart walk and donated $100 to the fundraiser. The team puts

“I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ?

We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through March. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL ART CONTEST! Don’t mess with Texas® and Keep Texas Beautiful invite you to set aside time for their Elementary School Art Contest. Did you know that Texans ages 16 to 34 are the most likely to litter? We need to do all we can to motivate young Texans to keep our environment free of trash. This contest is a great way to share the Don’t mess with Texas and Keep Texas Beautiful litter prevention messages with your elementary school students so that they learn good habits from an early age. Get creative! Inspired by their creativity and desire to protect our environment, elementary school students from across Texas can submit their best litter prevention design to be considered for the 2016 Don’t mess with Texas Calendar. Entries will be judged based on creativity/uniqueness, inclusion of a litter prevention message and interpretation of theme, overall visual appeal, composition and age appropriateness. Students win prizes and have their art featured. Students who create the top 13 winning designs will have their artwork assigned to a month or featured on the cover of the 2016 Don’t mess with Texas Calendar. Each will also win an iDeaUSA 8 tablet donated by H-E-B and Central Market. All student winners and their artwork will be showcased on the Don’t mess with Texas and Keep Texas Beautiful websites and social media sites, at the 2016 Keep Texas Beautiful annual conference, in media announcements and through other means as appropriate. Teachers win, too! Teachers representing students who produce the top 13 designs will each win a $100 H-E-B and Central Market gift card. See Official Contest Rules for more information.

BE WISE - ORGANIZE! It is so easy to keep putting things in your secret pile in that room or area no one sees. But one day someone will notice! Be wise - organize! Here are some easy DIY tips: • Shoe Boxes as DIY Dividers: You can make a completely customizable set with just scissors and shoe boxes. Simply cut the boxes in half by length or width, as needed for your space, then tuck into a drawer. • Picture Frames as Dry-Erase Board: Stay on top of your errands with an eye-catching DIY memo board: Frame a pretty scrap of fabric or wallpaper, hang in a high traffic area and use a dry-erase market to jot down reminders on the glass. • Stepladders as a Bedside Table: This minimalist take on a night table holds only the essentials-a lamp, a smartphone, water-forcing you to edit which items spend the night there.

• Magnets as a Medicine Cabinet Organizer: Mount a magnetic strip on the inside of the medicine cabinet door to store tweezers, bobby pins and other grooming tools in plain sight. • A Wine Rack as a Wall Organizer: Hang an unused wine rack on the wall of your garage or supply closet to stash rags, tools, extension cords and more odds and ends.
