One very important thing you can do is have a collar with some form of ID and your phone number on it. Pet stores have special ID’s for your pets. Many pet owners are now “chipping” the pets. If found and taken to a vet, they can scan the chip and find the owner, just remember to change the info on it if need be. If your pet has a rabies tag, the vet has your name and #. The first thing I ask a caller is “does the pet have ID on it?” If it does, I will help contact the # on the ID and let you know your pet has been found and if necessary, bring your pet to you. For all new Deerfield residents, I now have a Pet Hotline tag for your pet. When a pet is in a new location, it will not know how to find its new home if it gets out. The Pet Hotline tag will have my home and cell #. I will keep a log with a photo, breed, pet’s name, your name, address and your phone contact numbers. Here’s to keeping our “best friends” SAFE.

NEW RESIDENTS If you are new to Deerfield, please stop by the office and pick up a Welcome packet and Recycle Bin.

PET POOPS/YOU SCOOP When your pet poops during your walk, be prepared to scoop and trash. This is a growing issue within the community. Come with a scooper and a recycled grocery bag or anything else. It may not be the most fabulous way to walk your pet, but it does show your respect for every homeowner and our beautiful community. Pet feces damages lawns and many residents are working hard to maintaining their grass!

KEEP YOUR PETS ON LEASHES For the safety of all residents, please use all precautions with your pets and keep them on leashes when walking pets in the community EVEN IF YOU FEEL YOUR PET IS HARMLESS. If you do come across a loose pet or a pet that may be lost, please try to take in the pet temporarily to your home if you can.

281-859-0174 Veterinary Public Health (formerly called Harris County Animal Control) advises that “All dogs and cats must be kept under restraint while in the unincorporated areas of Harris County, Texas. The custodian of a dog or cat is not authorized to have, harbor or keep any unlicensed dog or cat, nor to allow any dog or cat to become a stray.” Restraint is defined as “the control of a dog or cat under the following circumstances: 1. When it is controlled by a line or leash not more than six (6) feet in length, if the line or leash is held by a human being, who is capable of controlling or governing the dog or cat in question 2. When it is within a fully enclosed vehicle 3. When it is on the premise of the custodian and the animal does not have access to sidewalk or street.” While it may be nice to have your animal out in the yard while you work or play, it is against the law, unless the animal is properly restrained. Let’s all help keep our community a safe and comfortable place for all our residents by being responsible pet owners. This will not only protect anyone who may be walking or bicycling in the area, but also the pet owner who could be held legally responsible or possibly sued for failing to properly restrain their pet.

STOP THAT BARKING!

LOST YOUR PET?

Dogs left alone all day get lonely, bored and restless. Many find relief in barking. Some respond noisily to any and all activity. Nothing is as annoying as incessant barking-even for dog lovers. If your dog is a yapper or a yowler, please consider some of these bark-abatement ideas to keep the noise down in your area. Your neighbors will thank you!

VETERINARY PUBLIC HEALTH DIVISION HARRIS COUNTY LEASH LAW

• Training. Always the first recommendation for any behavioral problem! Training not only helps your dog, you’ll be surprised how much it helps you, too. You may get some insight into why your dog barks so much, or what it is trying to communicate. • Citronella collars. A humane alternative to the electricshock, anti-barking collar and costs about the same.

Veterinary Public Health DIVISION (Formerly called Harris County Animal Control) The Veterinary Public Health Division posts photos of all animals found on their website and updates it twice daily. If you have lost your pet, please check this website. www.countypets.com.

Animals that are not properly restrained pose a threat to all our residents. While you may know your pet is friendly, an animal running at someone who is walking by is very scary for that person. Many children are afraid of animals and become frightened, which could result in the child getting hurt trying to avoid the animal.

• Confinement. Sometimes simply bringing an outspoken dog indoors or confining it to a crate cuts down on the disturbance to neighbors. • For inside dogs, reduce stimulus. Close drapes to help muffle street noise, or leave a radio on to mask it. • Companionship. Dogs are pack animals; they need companionship-a cat, bird or another dog. Consider a midday visit from a pet-sitting service or drop your pooch off at a friend’s place or a day-care facility once or twice a week

THANKSGIVING TRADITIONS Parades, football and turkey. These are the things many of us count on for Thanksgiving Day. In the US, Thanksgiving Day is celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November. Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Japan, Korea, Liberia and Switzerland also celebrate an official Thanksgiving Day. When you, your family and friends are celebrating this year, please remember our troops around the world. They are the reason we have the freedom to give thanks again this holiday season. There’s nothing as serene as a warm, crackling fire on a cold, winter night. There’s also nothing more dangerous if your chimney is damaged. Broken or cracked chimneys can let heat, smoke and toxic gasses, such as carbon monoxide, into your home. Your home could even catch fire. Chimney damage is often obvious, but sometimes it can be hidden. Use the following checklist, provided by Ready Virginia to help ensure that you can enjoy your fireplace and avoid problems - or even a disaster: • Check to see if bricks have fallen or the chimney is leaning. • Look for shiny areas on your exterior metal chimney pipe. This could mean the chimney has shifted - during the recent East Coast earthquake, for instance. • Look for cracks at joints where the chimney connects to the firebox, at the roofline and in the attic.

November 2013 Deerfield Village

• Check for debris that may have fallen into the fireplace. • Use a screwdriver to check the mortar between the bricks or stones. If it crumbles when you pick at it, the chimney may be a hazard and probably needs work. • When in doubt, consult a licensed engineer or contractor. For the name of an inspector, call your insurance or mortgage company. Remember, disasters can happen even in the best of homes. That’s why every home should be equipped with carbon monoxide and smoke detectors. Here are a few tips: • Install carbon monoxide and smoke detectors in sleeping areas and on every level of your home and away from air vents. Interconnected smoke alarms are best, because if one sounds, they all sound. • Test smoke alarms monthly and change alkaline batteries at least once a year. Use a familiar date, such as your birthday or when you change your clocks, as a reminder. • Prepare and practice a fire escape route with everyone in your home, including children. For more information, visit www.usfa.dhs.gov/smokealarms.

YOUR HEALTH NOW! LOW FAT, HIGH TASTE THANKSGIVING! Let the eating festival begin! Mashed potatoes WITH gravy, buttery biscuits, ooey gooey pecan pie, fried turkey, all the trimmings and THEN some. Sounds like your traditional Thanksgiving holiday menu? You CAN eat all your favorite foods low fat and with high taste this holiday season! Here’s how: • When making rue, use skim milk with a cholesterol free spread, like Smart Balance. • If a recipe calls for cream, use skim milk. It tastes just the same. • Mashed potatoes are a must, but use half potato-half boiled cauliflower. It will be tasty AND you will get essential vitamins. • Skip the fatty dips with your fruit and veggie platters. Presentation is everything. Make your platters creative and if these dips are a must: make homemade dips.

3

• Green bean casseroles are the tradition, so use low or no sodium soup, freshly boiled and chopped green beans, skim milk, a dash of fresh pepper and you can still afford the French fried onions! • Love the pies? Make your own low fat pie crust from scratch. The ready-made crusts are made with shortening and other unnecessary preservatives and additives.

BURN THOSE TURKEY DAY CALORIES! Oh boy - you just ate too much Thanksgiving food. Now what do you do? BURN IT OFF! It is difficult to stick to an exercise plan around the holidays, but it isn’t impossible: • Make it a non-negotiable that your exercise is priority during the holiday season. • Ask family and friends to join you if they are visiting from out of town. • BEGIN your day with a walk/run or gym time. • Post eating fest, go for a brisk walk. The dishwasher can do all the work. • Drink lots of fluids to curb your hunger. Chances are you’re thirsty, vs. hungry. • Participate in the many local walks/runs that take place around the holidays.

THANKSGIVING TRIVIA • The Plymouth Pilgrims were the first to celebrate the Thanksgiving in the fall of 1621. • The drink that the Puritans brought with them in the Mayflower was the beer. • The Wampanoag Indians were the people who taught the Pilgrims how to cultivate the land. • The first Thanksgiving celebration lasted three days.

4

• President George Washington issued the first national Thanksgiving Day Proclamation in the year 1789 and again in 1795. • The state of New York officially made Thanksgiving Day an annual custom in 1817. • Sarah Josepha Hale, an editor with a magazine, started a Thanksgiving campaign in 1827 and it was result of her efforts that in 1863 Thanksgiving was observed as a day for national thanksgiving and prayer. • Abraham Lincoln issued a ‘Thanksgiving Proclamation’ on third October 1863 and officially set aside the last Thursday of November as the national day for Thanksgiving. Whereas earlier the presidents used to make an annual proclamation to specify the day when Thanksgiving was to be held. • President Franklin D. Roosevelt restored Thursday before last of November as Thanksgiving Day in the year 1939. He did so to make the Christmas shopping season longer and thus stimulate the economy of the state. • Congress passed an official proclamation in 1941 and declared that now onwards Thanksgiving will be observed as a legal holiday on the fourth Thursday of November every year. • Benjamin Franklin wanted the turkey to be the national bird of the United States. But it was Thomas Jefferson who opposed him. It is believed that Franklin then named the male turkey as ‘tom’ to spite Jefferson. • The annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade tradition began in the 1920’s. • Californians are the largest consumers of turkey in the United States. • When the Pilgrims arrived in North America, the clothing of the Native Americans was made of animal skins (mainly deer skin). • On December 11, 1620 the first Pilgrims (or Puritans, as they were initially known) landed at Plymouth Rock.

Deerfield Village November 2013

• By the fall of 1621 only half of the pilgrims, who had sailed on the Mayflower, survived. The survivors, thankful to be alive, decided to give a thanksgiving feast.

THANKSGIVING ON A BUDGET Go for What’s in Season When planning your meal, first consult the calendar. This is no time for asparagus and artichokes. Buy produce in season and you will get much more for your money, not to mention livelier flavors. Brussels sprouts are at their peak in late November; farmers’ markets should have them in huge quantities, still on their stalks. (Serving them sliced rather than whole not only makes them more tantalizing but also helps them go further.) Fresh herbs have become available all year round, so it can be a better deal to buy a bunch rather than an expensive jar of the dried kind - fresh sage might be $1.99 compared with $6.50 for half an ounce dried, which could go stale by the next time you need it. Buy a Supermarket Bird In an ideal world we would all be eating heritage turkeys. They have outstanding texture and flavor and when we buy them, we help preserve unique breeds. But they are anything but a bargain: A 12 to 14 pound bird, which feeds eight, from Heritage Foods USA goes for $159 including shipping or more than $10 a pound. Supermarket turkeys can be fine alternatives for less than $2 a pound. Just be sure to buy a free-range or organic turkey rather than an industrial one injected with flavored oil. Plus, brining will add flavor and improve texture in even the least expensive birds, all for about $2.29 for a big box of kosher salt, an ingredient that can be used to season the rest of the meal. Start From Scratch Some convenience foods are often ridiculously cheap, loaded as they are with high-fructose corn syrup and chemicals, yet they rarely taste better than homemade. To cut costs and ensure the tastiest of feasts, make your own piecrust, cranberry sauce and gravy rather than opening up a box or can. Instead of paying $8 for a single loaf from an artisanal bakery, bake up some dinner rolls with yeast, butter and flour for a little over $7. A bakery-bought pecan pumpkin pie can go for upwards of $50, but a homemade version will run you $15 and $5 less if you omit the pecans. Know When to Buy Canned or Frozen Some canned and frozen foods are fine alternatives to fresh. Canned pumpkin is one of the great American ingredients and the generic brands are as good as premium labels. You could make a pie using a fresh pumpkin for $5, but you would wind up with a more watery filling than one made from a $2.49 can. And frozen vegetables can be both superior to and cheaper than out-of-season fresh ones; a bag of Cascadian Farms flash-frozen baby peas is $2.69, compared with $3.99 a pound or more for fresh snow peas, the only kind you are likely to find in November. Don’t Be a Slave to a Recipe If you don’t want to spring for three kinds of herbs in your soup or stuffing, choose one. Or none. Nothing but salt and pepper is ever really indispensable. Substitute water for canned stock in a soup; use a slurry of flour and water to thicken your pan gravy rather than making turkey stock. Instead of investing in a can of shortening for a piecrust, substitute butter for the two tablespoons needed in the recipe. The great thing about Thanksgiving is that the whole really is much more than the parts. Cut corners where you have to and all anyone will notice in the end is a heaping plate.

GARDENING TIPS FOR NOVEMBER

• Brown patch will continue to plague St. Augustine lawns as nights get cooler and humidity and rain continue. Discolored circles will appear in low areas almost overnight. Apply a fungicide recommended for brown patch according to label directions. Avoid walking through brown-patched turf. It spreads easily from the bottom of your shoes. If brown patch appears in the same lawn areas every year, add an inch or two of sandy topsoil to eliminate those low spots. • Fertilize St. Augustine turf with a winterizing formula to promote root growth over the winter months. Lower your lawn mover blades now and mow on a schedule that cuts no more than one-third of the grass blade away. • As chrysanthemums and other perennials finish blooming, cut flowering stalks to the ground to permit all strength to be used in making root growth. • Feed roses lightly, but avoid nitrogen fertilizers. Do not prune now. Keep up spraying program and water deeply. • Remove dead foliage and plant debris to help eradicate insects and disease organisms. Thin out and transfer volunteer seedlings. Beds made now will benefit by weathering before being planted. If soil is heavy, dig six inches deep, leave rough, cover with gymsum and strawy manure, water and allow to mellow. • Bananas are more likely to bear fruit if the trunk does not die back in winter. Cut banana stalks back to six feet, wrap with newspaper and burlap. • Continue mulching for winter. Build up a thick top mulch to protect roots from freezing and winter drying. Don’t throw away those pine tree needles; they make great acidic mulch for azaleas, gardenias and next Spring’s impatiens. • Place pansies in beds after weather has cooled. Use a little blood meat mixed in soil under each plant. • Now is the best time to plant trees and shrubs.

JEFF FURSTENBERG EAGLE SCOUT PROJECT Thanks to Jeff Furstenberg, 15 year old sophomore at Cypress Falls High School and group of fellow scouts from Troop 202, the Labay Middle School concession stand has been renovated and is ready for use. He did this for his Eagle project, a requirement for the highest and hardest rank to earn in Boy Scouts. For this project, the boys had to tear down all of the old paneling, cut new paneling, trim and windows, paint and install it all. It took 3 days to do the work (in 100 degree weather), but it took months to prepare. He had to fill out lots of paperwork, get it approved and had to earn money for the supplies. But it turned out well and Labay now has a usable concession stand. Before, the concession stand was very run down with rotted wood and paper thin paneling you could poke holes through and hazy windows. Now it is fresh and ready for use. Next time you go to a Labay football game, go check out the concession stand and buy yourself some snacks! Jeff would like to thank everybody who helped out including the scouts and the great assistant scout masters that volunteered their time. He couldn’t have done it without you guys.

CY-LAKES STERLING STARS HONOR FIREFIGHTERS AND SUPPORT CANCER AWARENESS

The Sterling Stars Drill Team at Cy-Lakes High School organized a most memorable community service project for the month of September. In honor of the four fallen firefighters from the hotel fire in Houston on May 31, 2013, the team visited Houston Fire Department stations #68 and #51, each of which lost two firefighters in the tragedy. In addition to bringing kolaches and doughnuts to the fire stations, the Sterling Stars also presented banners filled with personal messages from Cy-Lakes teachers, family members and students to the firefighters and the banners are now hanging in each fire station. As a final gesture of appreciation, the drill team donated cutlery sets to each station with engraved silver plates donated by Crown Trophy. Ms. Annette Stark, director of the Sterling Stars said, “The firefighters were amazing! Many of the Sterling Stars said it was the most memorable thing they have done as a part of the team. It was certainly worth waking up and putting that uniform and smile on at 4 AM that morning. Many lives were touched on both sides.”

Over 300 members from the community participated, donning pink outfits as they walked for a cure for cancer. With donations from participants, the drill team raised $469, which was donated for cancer research.

During the 2013 spring break, two social studies teachers at CyLakes High School took a trip that changed their lives and their teaching forever. Andrew White and Shelby Touchy, social studies teachers at Cy-Lakes, along with Katherine Cantu (Cy-Springs High School) and Frank “Ross” Flood (Aragon MS) were accepted by the World Affairs Council of Houston to travel to Saudi Arabia for ten days. The trip turned out to be much more than just a “sightseeing tour.” To begin with, the teachers lodged at the Ritz Carlton and enjoyed first class dining throughout their stay in the country. The people of Saudi Arabia were extremely respectful to everyone in the group and they felt as though they were treated as dignitaries. Not only did the teachers enjoy numerous places of interest, they learned many things about the culture of the country. For example, there are no movie theaters or alcohol in the country. Women are not allowed to drive. Healthcare and schools are free to everyone and during prayer time, which occurs five times daily, everything stops. Actually, during prayer time one day the group toured a castle. They noticed one of the members was missing and began to worry. However, he soon showed up with several of the locals. They did not speak English and he did not speak Arabic, but the people did everything they could to help him locate his group. Andrew White commented that he had never seen people be so helpful to a stranger. So what does this trip to Saudi Arabia mean for Cy-Lakes? Mr. White and Ms. Touchy collaborated after they returned to school and developed lessons in country profiles for their students. Of course, the lesson about Saudi Arabia is very rich and comprehensive. Throughout her stay in Saudi Arabia, Ms. Touchy wore the traditional dress that is required for women in Saudi Arabia. Mr. White rode a camel and brought back souvenirs such as a McDonald’s bag with Arabic writing on it to show his students. But the story does not end there. Andrew White will be travelling to Beijing, China from November 7th through November 12th as part of the Education First cultural exchange program. He will return with more cultural experiences to share with the students of Cy-Lakes High School.

“I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ? We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through November. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.
