Marie Nugent 713-818-5799 Along with a rabies tag for ID, the most important is a tag with the owner’s phone # … since vets are closed on Saturday afternoon and all day Sundays. A tag with a cell phone # is best because the cell phone is usually with the owner when he/she is not home.

QUILTERS!
• Dig and store caladiums before the foliage dies. Allow the bulbs to dry in the shade, shake off the dried soil and dust with sulphur to control fungus. Store by hanging in open mesh bags or old panty hose. • Flowers planted for spring can begin when the temperatures are going to stay cooler. Shrubs and trees can be planted now. Woody plants concentrate on root growth through the winter and the more headstart they can get before summer, the better. • October 15th is about the time for dividing and planting daylilies. • Watch out for brown patch in St. Augustine grass. These circular brown patches are caused by a fungus that is activated by moist cool weather. Control with Daconil. • If you need to do any pruning, do it early in the month. The re-growth stimulated by pruning needs to harden off before that odd-ball frost of Halloween. Prune fruit trees when leaves begin to fall. Remove all dead, weak and overcrowded growth. Tip back main branches to control size and shape. Spray w/dormant oil when temperature is between 30-60 degrees. • Cut back tops of perennials after they have bloomed. Divide roots and transplant anytime from now until March, the earlier the better. • Get the ant baits down. This will greatly reduce your spring populations. • Clover left over from last year may be growing. It’s best to hit it with the post-emerge herbicides in October and November. At least two applications are usually needed, even if done this early. • For color throughout the winter, begin planting pansies.

HALLOWEEN TIPS Halloween is a kid’s delight. It’s a blast to dress up in costumes, go trick-or-treating, attend parties and most of all, eat candy. At the same time, Halloween can be scary for parents. Costumes can be dangerous, too much candy can be sickening and walking around at night can be risky. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention offer these tips to make sure your little ghouls, goblins and princesses have a safe Halloween: S - Swords, knives and similar costume accessories should be short, soft and flexible. A - Avoid trick-or-treating alone. Children should walk in groups or with a trusted adult. F - Fasten reflective tape to costumes and bags to help drivers see trick-or-treaters. E - Examine all treats for choking hazards and tampering before they’re eaten.

H - Hold a flashlight while trick-or-treating to help see and help others see you. A - Always test make-up in a small area first. Remove it when done to avoid skin irritation. L - Look both ways before crossing the street. Use established crosswalks wherever possible. L - Lower the risk for serious eye injury by avoiding decorative contact lenses. O - Only walk on sidewalks or on the far edge of the road facing traffic to stay safe. W - Wear well-fitting masks, costumes and shoes to avoid blocked vision, trips and falls. E - Eat only factory-wrapped candy. Avoid eating homemade treats unless you know the cook. E - Enter homes only if you’re with a trusted adult. N - Never walk near lit candles or other open flames. Be sure to wear flame-resistant costumes. If you’re hosting a party or expecting trick-or-treaters: • Provide healthy treats, such as individual packs of raisins, trail mix or pretzels. Offer fruits, vegetables and cheeses to party guests. • Use party games and trick-or-treating as an opportunity for kids to get their daily dose of 60 minutes of physical activity. • Make sure walking areas and stairs are well-lit and free of obstacles that could cause falls. • Keep candle-lit jack-o-lanterns and other open flames away from doorsteps, walkways, landings and curtains. Place them on sturdy tables, keep them out of reach of pets and small children and never leave them unattended. • Drive safely and watch out for trick-or-treaters.

ENGLISH AND ART GO HAND-IN-HAND AT CY LAKES
• Interior & Exterior Painting
Two English teachers at Cy Lakes bring an extra element to their English classes at Cy Lakes High School - their love of art. Elizabeth Rector, English II teacher and Micah Clegg, English IV teacher, both use their art talent to engage students and add a unique dimension to their English classes. Elizabeth Rector remembers drawing with her mother when she was a child and being competitive, she decided to practice drawing until she was better than her mother. She loves all types of art and in addition to being the head cartoonist for the Texas Christian University newspaper The Skiff, Rector’s art has been featured in various publications. Recently, her ceramic pieces won first place in an art contest in the Woodlands. In the classroom, Rector illustrates events and characters in stories to help students gain a better understanding of the story. She states that she uses art to connect students with literature, especially those who have visual learning styles. Deerfield Village

“I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ?
We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through October. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.

CHIROPRACTIC HEALTH and WELLNESS CENTER Micah Clegg also uses his artistic talent to aid students in understanding literature. His goal is to be able to touch those emotions that reside within us and to “make the extraordinary look ordinary and the ordinary look extraordinary.” Clegg has illustrated two books and his work includes pen and ink and watercolor. As students read stories and novels in his classroom, Clegg sketches scenes and characters to bring the literature to life and give students a deeper understanding and appreciation of the text. Both Rector and Clegg have a passion for teaching English and both find it rewarding to bring their love of art into the classroom for their students.

HOUSTON FAMILY ARTS CENTER ASKS AUDIENCES, ‘WHAT’S WRONG WITH THIS PICTURE?’ IN 2015-2016 “What’s wrong with this picture?” is the playful theme and question attached to each show in Houston Family Arts Center’s (HFAC) 2015-2016 season. Entering its 10th mainstage season, HFAC orchestrated a line-up of all-encompassing shows that highlight the theatre’s award-winning musical expertise, all while enveloping theatre experiences full of odd, zany, mystical and dramatic turmoil audiences love. The first half of the season as follows: 2015 October 16-November 8, 2015: “Into the Woods” The fairy tale classics of Cinderella, Jack and the Beanstalk, Rapunzel and Little Red Riding Hood are weaved into an original, charming, musical tale of a couple’s journey to break a wicked witch’s curse. Will the baker and his wife be able to break the witch’s spell? November 27-December 20, 2015: “It’s a Wonderful Life” George Bailey spends his life giving up big dreams on behalf of his community. Overwhelmed by family obligations, George uncovers an opportunity to save his town but a mistake finds

himself in a disparaging situation. George’s guardian angel, Clarence, who hasn’t earned his wings, takes George on a journey to discover his “wonderful life.” All performances are on the HFAC Garza Mainstage, recently named “Houston’s Best Gem of a Theatre” by the Houston Press.

MAINSTAGE SEASON - 2015 All Shows at Studio 101, 1824 Spring Street #101, Houston TX 77007 Mac Wellman’s Dracula: By Mac Wellman, Directed by Jennifer Decker. Mac Wellman’s bizarre and offbeat version of DRACULA completely re-vamps Bram Stoker’s classic novel. The show was one of Mildred’s Umbrella’s earliest productions and was originally staged by the company in 2004. The oral presentation must be not less than 3 minutes and no more than 5 minutes in length, spoken in English and recorded on the media specified on the application form, with no background noise or enhancements. The essay cannot contain the student’s name, city, state, grade level or refer to their nationality. Entries must be received no later than midnight Nov. 1, 2015. On Sunday, July 19th, Josh Gilliam, son of Jim & Pam Gilliam of Copperfield, earned the Boy Scouts of America Eagle Scout Award. Josh is a member of Troop 202, a troop sponsored by Middlegate Village Homeowner’s Association. Troop 202 meets regularly on Mondays at 7 PM at Copperfield Church. For his Eagle project and at the recommendation given by Josh’s church - Copperfield Church, Josh chose to build a work table/ cabinet for the church staff’s resource room. The cabinet was used to replace a limited, portable 6’ table. The cabinet was constructed of ¾” oak ply-wood with an attractive laminate countertop. With the help of adult and youth volunteers from Troop 202, as well as scout friends from other troops, Josh organized the crew for the building and installation of the work table/cabinet. Upon being awarded the Eagle Scout rank, Josh has thus-far success-
