Festival of Lights - Through January 1st - This holiday season, Moody Gardens in Galveston, TX will present its 10th Annual Festival of Lights. This 7-week long celebration is the largest of its kind in the entire Gulf Coast. Festival of Lights boasts over 100 light displays containing over 1 million twinkling lights. Add to that an outdoor ice skating rink, live entertainment, holiday-themed films and photo ops with Santa himself and you have every reason to make the trip. Festival of Lights is open from 6 PM to 10 PM. Admission is $5.95 for all ages. Sip hot chocolate as you stroll through the Zoo and take in all the awe-inspiring sights, including whimsical colorful projections over 15 feet tall, life-size lighted animal sculptures and “Holly Berry,” a 1958 Cadillac featuring vibrant lights choreographed to joyful music. QUICK AND EASY OATMEAL MUFFINS

INGREDIENTS: 4 ounces cream cheese, softened 1 tablespoon milk 1 tablespoon white sugar 1 1/2 cups frozen whipped topping, thawed 1 (9 inch) prepared graham cracker crust 1 cup cold milk 2 (3.5 ounce) packages instant vanilla pudding mix 1 (15 ounce) can solid pack pumpkin puree 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
INGREDIENTS: 2 eggs 2/3 cup brown sugar 1/2 cup vegetable oil 1/2 cup milk 1 cup all-purpose flour 3/4 cup instant oatmeal 1 teaspoon baking powder 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 1 pinch salt
DIRECTIONS: In a large bowl, whisk together cream cheese, 1 tablespoon of milk and sugar until smooth. Gently stir in whipped topping. Spread into bottom of crust.
DIRECTIONS: Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C). Grease 12 muffin cups. Whisk eggs, brown sugar, vegetable oil and milk together in a bowl until smooth. Stir flour, oatmeal, baking powder, baking soda and salt into wet ingredients to form a batter. Fill the prepared muffin cups with batter.
Pour 1 cup of milk into large bowl and thoroughly mix in pudding mix, pumpkin, cinnamon, ginger and cloves. When thickened, spread over cream cheese layer. Refrigerate 4 hours or until set. Source: allrecipes.com

GARDENING TIPS FOR DECEMBER
• If a long flowering period is desired, pansies should be placed in their permanent beds not later than this month. Fertilize monthly with manure, super-phosphate or a liquid high-phosphate product. Keep flowers picked for more bloom. • Take tulips out of cold storage and plant late this month. • Fertilize established trees, spring-blooming shrubs, spurias and sweet peas (after they are a foot tall) with a fertilizer such as 13-1313; Louisiana iris with cotton seed meal and manure. • Azaleas and camellias may be moved now. Keep moist to lesson cold weather damage. May acidify again. • Last month to plant early blossoming spring bulbs, speciosum and other varieties of lilies. Mulch. • Water plants well before a freeze; dry roots are easily damaged. • Don’t forget to provide food and fresh water for birds. More birds die from lack of water than lack of food.

CYPRESS HOOPS INVITATIONAL DECEMBER 10TH- 12TH AT THE BERRY CENTER
The Houston Methodist Cy-Hoops Invitational will be December 10th- 12th at the Berry Center. The Invitational has been going strong for six years with the first one taking place in 2009. It consists of 24 teams including the 10 CFISD boys’ varsity teams. The purpose of the event is to foster community spirit, promote the sport of basketball, engage the community and raise funds for student scholarships and staff development grants to CFISD. CFISD MENTOR PROGRAM
The CFISD Mentor Program is a cooperative effort of volunteers from businesses, faith-based and/or non-profit organizations, the community and the school district designed to encourage students (elementary through high school) to finish school and focus on future education and career goals. A mentor is a suitable role model committed to helping a student with his/her academic and social development. Currently, over 500 mentors are matched with students. To become a mentor, you must attend a training session (Register), complete a global volunteer/mentor application and consent to a criminal history record check. CY-RIDGE HIGH SCHOOL SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA INVITED TO INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE
The Cypress Ridge High School Symphony Orchestra will be joining an elite group of musicians with its invitation to the 69th annual Midwest Clinic in Chicago. The Midwest Clinic International Band, Orchestra and Music Conference, the world’s largest instrumental music education conference, is scheduled for December 16th - 19th. Cypress Ridge is the first orchestra from Cypress-Fairbanks ISD to be chosen to perform. The 110 member Cypress Ridge Symphony Orchestra is among six international high school orchestras that will perform at the conference. Every year, groups of every type and size from all over the world apply for the honor of performing at the conference. The Cypress Ridge Symphony Orchestra was chosen based on its excellent resume of past contest performances and on a recorded audition submitted in March. The invitation to participate is an honor and culmination of the orchestra members many years of hard work and practice under the leadership of their director, Mr. Christopher Mustell. The orchestra recognizes the once-in-a-lifetime experience and looks forward to representing Cypress Ridge, CFISD and Houston. The expenses for this opportunity are challenging and expected to run $1,500 per student. Community support will be vital in making sure every symphony orchestra member may participate. Personal and business sponsorships will help support the program and reduce the student musicians’ costs.
