MONTHLY MEETINGS

We at the present are no longer holding the monthly HOA meetings at Bear Creek Baptist Church due to scheduling conflicts with the rooms and programs going on there this winter. Instead the meeting will be held at one of the Board members homes until the church becomes available again. There will be no meetings scheduled for November and December due to the holidays. The new website is up and running and looks great, lots of information is and will be posted on it. I would encourage homeowners to go to www.eagleranchwest.org and if you haven’t yet asked for a login id you can do so on the website and the information will be emailed to you. You will also receive an email when and where the next HOA meeting will be held.

EAGLE RANCH WEST REMINDERS

Please make sure you are replacing the broken or missing boards on your fences, with all the recent heavy winds there are a lot of fences in need of maintenance. Harris County leash laws state that all pets are to be confined on a leash with no access to sidewalks or streets unless accompanied by owner(s). To report animals running loose, call Animal Control at 281-999-3191.

USE OF FIREWORKS WITHIN EAGLE RANCH WEST

Your Board of Directors is requesting that in the future if you plan to set off fireworks in front of your home to celebrate 4th of July and the New Year, to please clean up the mess the following day. Do not wait for the rains to wash it into the sewer system, which is a violation on a totally different level.

Primary Care Including:

GARDEN TIPS FOR JUNE

Lawns • Apply iron sulfate or chelete to St. Augustine grass lawns. • Mow St. Augustine to a 2-inch height now to protect roots from the sun. Never cut off more than a third of the leaf. • Continue treatment of lawns for chinch bug. As the temperature hits 80 degrees, chinch bugs begin to reproduce in the hottest and driest part of the lawn, usually next to cement. Use diazinon or dursban granules. Flowers • Overwatered hibiscus, purslane and bougainvillea won’t bloom. • Keep flowers pinched off of coleus and caladiums to encourage more of the beautiful foliage. • Plants to set: Acalpha, Ageratum, Alternathera, Aspidistra, Artemisia, Balsam, Begonia, Chrysanthemum, Cockscomb, Coleus, Croton, Dusty Miller, Feverfew, Gaillardia, Geranium, Marigold, Petunia, Pinks, Portulaca, Salvia-red, Shrimp Plant, Torenia, Verbena and Vinca. Vegetables • A strong blast of water in the morning rids plants of most bugs for the rest of the day. • Vegetables to plant: Cantaloupe, Sweet Corn, Cucumber, Eggplant sets, Okra, Black Peas, Pepper Sets, Summer Squash and Sweet Potato. Shrubs • Watch Camellias and Azaleas, they’re setting their blooms now for next season. So give them a good mulch and plenty of water. Mulch well with oak leaves and/or pine needles to keep soil acidic. Benefits of Mulching: Mulching (organic or inorganic) is a layer of material on the surface of the soil around the plant. Mulches conserve water by reducing evaporation, insulates the soil and protects it from the drying wind and hot sun. Mulches break the force of rain and irrigation water and tend to prevent erosion, soil compaction, and crusting. Lastly, a 2-3 inch layer of mulch will almost eliminate weed problems.

DON’T GET BURNED! SUMMER SAFETY TIPS

Summer is here! Who doesn’t want to be outside, sunbathing, swimming, playing catch on the beach or just barbequing in the backyard? While summer means fun in the sun, make sure you’re not getting too much of a good thing. Avoid consequences of overexposure to the sun like sunburns, premature aging of the skin, wrinkling and skin cancer, including melanoma by practicing proper sun protection. The hours between 10 AM and 4 PM daylight savings time are the most hazardous for UV exposure in the continental United States. UV rays are the greatest during the late spring and early summer in North America. CDC recommends easy options for sun protection: Sunscreen • Use sunscreen with the sun protective factor (SPF) 15 or higher and both UVA and UVB protection. • Sunscreen wears off. Put it on again if you stay out in the sun for more than two hours and after you swim or do things that make you sweat. • Check the sunscreen’s expiration date. Sunscreen without an expiration date has a shelf life of no more than three years, but its shelf life is shorter if if has been exposed to high temperatures. Clothing • Wear clothing to protect exposed skin. • Loose-fitting long-sleeved shirts and long pants made from tightly woven fabric offer the best protection from the sun’s UV rays. A wet t-shirt offers much less UV protection than a dry one. Darker colors may offer more protection than lighter colors. • If wearing this type of clothing isn’t practical, at least try to wear a t-shirt or a beach cover-up. Keep in mind that a typical t-shirt has an SPF rating lower than 15, so use other types of protection as well. Hats • Wear a hat with a wide brim to shade the face, head, ears and neck. • For the most protection, wear a hat with a brim all the way around that shades your face, ears and the back of your neck. A tightly woven fabric, such as canvas, works best to protect your skin from UV rays. Avoid straw hats with holes that let sunlight through. A darker hat may offer more UV protection. • If you wear a baseball cap, you should also protect your ears and the back of your neck by wearing clothing that covers those areas, using sunscreen with at least SPF 15 or by staying in the shade. Sunglasses • Sunglasses protect your eyes from UV rays and reduce the risk of cataracts. They also protect the tender skin around your eyes from son exposure. • Wear sunglasses that wrap around and block as close to 100% of both UVA and UVB rays as possible. • Sunglasses that block both UVA and UVB rays offer the best protection. Most sunglasses sold in the United States, regardless of cost, meet this standard. Shade • Seek shade, especially during midday hours. • You can reduce your risk of skin damage and skin cancer by seeking shade under an umbrella, tree or other shelter before you need relief from the sun. Your best bet to protect your skin is to use sunscreen or wear protective clothing when you’re outside - even when you’re in the shade. For more information, please visit www.cdc.gov/cancer/skin/basic_ info/prevention.htm or call 800-CDC-INFO.

Mix 4 cups of flour with 1 cup water in a large bowl until thoroughly combined; stir yeast mixture into flour mixture. Beat remaining 1 cup water, baking powder, salt, sharp Cheddar cheese, habanero pepper and rosemary into dough; beat remaining 1 cup flour into dough. Turn out onto a floured work surface and knead until dough is soft and elastic, at least 6 minutes. DIRECTIONS: Preheat oven to 300 degrees F (150 degrees C). In a mixing bowl, blend cream cheese and sugar until smooth. Beat in the eggs one at a time, mixing until fully incorporated before adding the next egg. Mix in 3 tablespoons whipping cream and the coffee-flavored liquor. Pour into an 8-inch glass pie pan. Place chocolate in a small heat-proof bowl and set aside. In a small saucepan, bring 1/2 cup whipping cream just to a boil. Pour it over the chopped chocolate; let chocolate soften for about 3 minutes. Whisk until smooth. Drizzle chocolate in a spiral pattern over filling. Stir lightly with tip of a paring knife to achieve a marbling effect. Set the pie pan in a larger pan with water that comes halfway up side of pie pan. Bake in preheated oven until firm in the center, about 55 minutes. Cool completely and refrigerate, covered with plastic wrap, overnight. Garnish with whipped cream piped or dolloped around edges and shaved chocolate in center. http://allrecipes.com/ Submitted by golddigge

“I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ?

We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through June. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.

HOUSTON FAMILY ARTS CENTER REMAINING 2015 SEASON EXPLORING LIFE, LOVE & LAUGHTER

The Houston Family Arts Center (HFAC) announces its 10th mainstage season, which explores life, love and laughter through timeless musicals, zany comedies, a classic murder mystery and a Shakespearean comedy. • Shakespeare - comes to life, June 12th - July 5th with A Midsummer Night’s Dream. The canon’s most enchanted comedy pursues love with calculated abandon! This story of mortal and immortal paramours set in a mythical forest is one that will cast a spell on lovers of all ages. • 1776 - Closing this exciting season, July 24th - August 16th, is the American musical, 1776. With revolutionary immediacy, our lofty founding fathers are found to be genuine people who debate, bargain and fray one another’s nerves as they struggle on the tortuous road to independence. This musical witness to the creation of one of the most eloquent documents in history will stir the soul of every American.

All Shows at Studio 101, 1824 Spring Street #101, Houston TX 77007 Mildred’s Umbrella Theatre Company has been selected for an NEA Art Works grant from the National Endowment for the Arts for our upcoming production of the Houston Premiere of The Drowning Girls by Beth Graham, Charlie Tomlinson, Daniela Vlaskalic. In addition, the company has received a Brown Foundation Discretionary Fund Grant for operations in our upcoming season. These grants are highly competitive and we are proud to have been among the recipients. The Drowning Girls, a modern interpretation and poetic retelling of the “Brides in the Bath” slayings in 20th century England. The work also examines the lengthy history of misogyny and domestic abuse in modern civilization. Originally produced in Canada for the Edmonton Fringe Festival, the work will debut in Houston on July 16, 2015 and will run for 12 performances through August 1, 2015. In line with MU’s mission to promote and support the work of women, the play, written by three female playwrights, illustrates how far women have come in the fight for equality in the past 100 years. MORE INFO/RESERVATIONS: www.mildredsumbrella.com, info@ mildredsumbrella.coM or 832-463-0409.
