WINNING SEASON FOR THE LOEST DOLPHINS WOW! The LOEST Dolphins had a stellar season! The team won 4 of the 5 dual meets and took a nail biting first place at the divisional meet on June 20th! Many swimmers also competed in and performed their best in the Trinity and Ponderosa Invitational. Congratulations are in order first to the swimmers who did their very best at every meet and then to their dedicated parents and coaches who worked hard to give the children a wonderful experience they will not forget! Many thanks go out to the volunteers who made it all possible and did it with great enthusiasm and to all the residents of LOE, LOEN and VAL who very graciously hosted our practices and pep rallies this season. Once again, LOEST will be offering a Fall Swim Program for swimmers looking for conditioning and stroke development. It will run from August 25th-October 29th. Registration will be open at the beginning of August on the LOEST website. The clinic is available to all families, new and returning, but slots are limited. LAKES ON ELDRIDGE - LADIES OF LOE MEET The Ladies of LOE Meet will gather at the LOE clubhouse August 27, 2015, the last Thursday of the month at 10 AM to 12 PM to enjoy creative stitching, chatting and refreshments. New comers are invited and always welcomed; we all look forward to seeing old friends and encourage everyone to bring others outside our LOE community. Some of the ladies are long time stitchers and are pleased to provide instructions if one of the various creative stitching methods is appealing. If a meet-your-neighbors visit and engaging in an exchange of ideas is enough, then come along and have light refreshments and conversation. LAKES ON ELDRIDGE BIBLE STUDY The LOE Bible Study Group began a new study on February 10, 2015. Does it even seem possible that 2015 is here already? Well, it is and we are not yet ready for the Lord’s return. What does it mean to be ready for the Lord’s return? Dee Brestin shows us through her study “A Woman of Beauty” that looks at First, Second and Third John in the New Testament. Each of these letters from the Apostle John is written to believers in Jesus Christ. They define the beauty that God wants to see in us when He sends Jesus to take us to our eternal home. This beauty is not just out ward, but comes from deep within us. We can see from the scriptures exactly what God expects from His faithful followers. Our group meets every Tuesday at 9:15 AM, at the Lakes on Eldridge Beach Club for fellowship, music, study and prayer. We welcome all who would like to know more about growing in God’s love and grace. We finish around 11:30 AM and go out to lunch together on the second Tuesday of the month. We have every breed of purebred dog available in our Texas pounds and shelters, in great quantities. This is because of the complete lack of any regulations or limit on breeding in Texas. • Approximately 30-40% of euthanasias in pounds involve purebred animals. • Mixed breeds in Texas stand almost no chance of making it out of the pounds alive. There is absolutely nothing wrong with these dogs; they just had the misfortune of being owned by people who did not provide for their needs and care and obviously had no real commitment to their pet. • Countless numbers of people turn their own dogs in to high-kill shelters, dump them rurally in the middle of nowhere or let them roam and stray. It reflects a mentality that most dog lovers do not understand.

GREEN TIPS Reasons to lose your styrofoam habit - Many of us use styrofoam cups at work or when we get fast food: they’re just so convenient. But if you use one styrofoam cup a day, you’re adding 23 pounds of waste to the landfill every year (and that’s not counting all of those restaurant to-go boxes). Re-using bread bags - Bread bags are quite handy and can take the place of other products that you might buy, so, even though we probably can’t keep them out of the waste stream forever, they can be used for other purposes that may prevent the use/purchase of another product. Here are some ideas: • • • • •

For packing sandwiches As packing material when shipping goods General storage for small items A replacement for freezer bags Plastic bag crafts (you can use strips to weave rugs or placemats or make “rope”) • A cake icing piping bag • For picking up dog poop (other small bags can be re-used for this purpose too, like snack/chip bags) • Makeshift gloves for touching unpleasant or corrosive things (snack/chip bags good for this, too) • Seed starters - put soil in the bottom & use them for seedling starters (also snack/chip bags) • Car travel sick bag (also snack/chip bags) • Trash bags for small trashcans or for the car (also snack/chip bags) • Seasoning bag; add seasoning and meat and shake. Be sure to shake the crumbs out of the bag before storing for reuse!

GARDEN TIPS FOR AUGUST • Time now to make plans for fall landscaping projects. • Clean up flowerbeds of fallen foliage, yellowed leaves and dead wood. Light green leaves may signify lack of iron (chlorosis). Correct with iron cheleates. • Cut off old dead foliage on irises. Scratch in a little bone meal around the roots. • Prune roses to reshape and groom plants for fall growth. • Wait until November to plant petunias and pansies. • Chinch bug damage is obvious now. You will have areas of thin and/or dead turf where they weren’t brought under control. There is a new generation going now. This batch causes the most damage. Use Dursban to stop the damage. • Until the weather gets back to the 80’s, St. Augustine grass grows slowly. If you fill in with sod, don’t expect a fast turnaround. The sod may look like it’s not growing while it puts down roots. You will need to water the new sod often and deeply to get it started but this also creates a disease environment. Water early so the sun can dry the turf. • Now is a good time to work new beds. Till them up, add organic material, mix it in, then let them cure for a month or so. Add in any amendments like micro-nutrients. Keep the beds moist so the microorganisms have a favorable environment. Eldridge Echoes

LEE ELEMENTARY CFISD NAMES NEW PRINCIPAL FOR LEE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL Susan Epperson, an assistant principal at Lieder Elementary School, was named the new principal at Lee Elementary School on June 25th. Epperson replaces Dr. Tonya Goree, who was named the new principal at Francone Elementary School on June 5th. Epperson has 17 years of experience in education, including 14 years in Cypress-Fairbanks ISD. She came to CFISD in 2001 as a third-grade math and science teacher at Sheridan Elementary School, serving two years before taking a third-grade math teaching position at Birkes Elementary School for one year. Epperson was named instructional specialist at Birkes and served six years before being named assistant principal at Emery Elementary School. Following three years at Emery, she accepted her current position as assistant principal at Lieder, where she has spent two years.

BOY SCOUTS WANT TO BE A SCOUT? Cy-Fair Area Boy Scouts of America leaders will make a push to recruit area boys for membership, with multiple dates and venues available for parents with questions. The Boy Scouts will have a booth at the Cy-Fair ISD Back To School Expo, which is 9 AM to 1 PM, Saturday, August 16th, at the Berry Center, 8877 Barker Cypress. Scout leaders there can direct prospects to the proper units, based on age and geography. The Soaring Eagle District of the BSA will host rally nights at respective elementary schools for Cub Scouts, which is boys in first through sixth grades. Rally nights are Tuesday, September 1st and Monday, September 21st, at area elementary schools. Mildred’s Umbrella Theatre Company has been selected for an NEA Art Works grant from the National Endowment for the Arts for our upcoming production of the Houston Premiere of The Drowning Girls by Beth Graham, Charlie Tomlinson, Daniela Vlaskalic. In addition, the company has received a Brown Foundation Discretionary Fund Grant for operations in our upcoming season. The Drowning Girls, a modern interpretation and poetic retelling of the “Brides in the Bath” slayings in 20th century England. The work also examines the lengthy history of misogyny and domestic abuse in modern civilization. Originally produced in Canada for the Edmonton Fringe Festival, the work will debut in Houston on July 16, 2015 and will run for 12 performances through August 1, 2015. In line with MU’s mission to promote and support the work of women, the play, written by three female playwrights, illustrates how far women have come in the fight for equality in the past 100 years.
