Winter can be a wonderful time of year in the garden. Winter may lack the wild riot of color and growth that we all so love in spring, but winter has a different kind of beauty. Some of our favorite winter gardens are understated, tranquil and calming. Interesting evergreen shrubs and grasses really stand out in this season, as well as trees with beautiful bark. Flowering shrubs like Camellias are winter favorites. As for annuals, we Texans are quite fortunate in winter choices. The new generation of cool season pansies will provide color from now until late spring. Other flowering annuals like Snapdragons, Cyclamen, Flowering Cabbage and Kale provide both color and shape for the Winter garden.

TIMELY TIPS FOR DECEMBER GARDENERS FROM CALLOWAY’S/CORNELIUS
Even better, winter is the perfect time to plan and lay the foundation for spring. December is the month to plant your chilled bulbs for big Spring blooms. And this is also a good time to prune and reshape your trees and shrubs. Do not top crape myrtles, simply remove the seedheads and prune for shape. You should also prepare your garden for cold weather. First of all, make sure that your plants are in excellent shape, well watered and well fed, because a healthy plant will survive cold snaps more easily. 3 to 4 inches of mulch provides insulation that keeps the ground beneath it warmer, thus protecting roots. If you have tender plants, stock up on Frost Cloth now, so that you have it on hand when you need it. Frost Cloth is simply an insulating blanket for your plants. It should be draped over them when cold weather is approaching. To be effective the Frost Cloth should reach the ground all the way around, so that it effectively captures the heat emanating from the ground and keeps the air around your plants marginally warmer. It’s a lovely season in Texas, enjoy the cool bite of frosty mornings, warm drinks by the fireside, bright lights on trees and homes and most of all, your treasured family and friends.
YARD OF THE MONTH GUIDELINES

LAKES ON ELDRIDGE BIBLE STUDY
The Bible Study group at Lakes on Eldridge North begins its holiday break on December 10th and will recommence on January 14, 2014. The new study is Calm My Anxious Heart By Linda Dillow. Anyone struggling with contentment (and who isn’t?) will find ways to deal with the chaos of this world and in our families throughout this thoughtful study. Both the Old and New Testaments contain heartcalming methods to cast worry and anxiety into the outer darkness where they belong. Ms. Dillow’s thought-provoking questions show us how the words of the Bible apply to our present-day lives and heal our wounded souls. We continue to meet in the clubhouse at Lakes on Eldridge North at 9:30 on Tuesday mornings. All are welcome to join this loving, caring group for fellowship, soul food as well as yummy food, singing and prayer. If you would like to pre-register, contact Stephanie at mrstjl10179@ gmail. Books will be available at the meetings for $16 or you may order from Mardels Christian Book store in Katy or Amazon.com.
CONSIDERING GETTING A NEW DOG?
…or if you know friends and family who are, please consider and suggest rescuing vs. buying a dog from a breeder. We have every breed of purebred dog available in our Texas pounds and shelters, in great quantities. This is because of the complete lack of any regulations or limit on breeding in Texas. • Approximately 30-40% of euthanasias in pounds involve purebred animals. • Mixed breeds in Texas stand almost no chance of making it out of the
Eldridge Echoes
pounds alive. There is absolutely nothing wrong with these dogs; they just had the misfortune of being owned by people who did not provide for their needs and care and obviously had no real commitment to their pet. • Countless numbers of people turn their own dogs in to high-kill shelters, dump them rurally in the middle of nowhere or let them roam and stray. It reflects a mentality that most dog lovers do not understand. • When you or someone you know considers adopting a dog, please check out one of our five local animal shelters: 1. BARC - Bureau of Animal Regulation and Care i.e. Houston’s animal control or city pound 2. Harris County Animal Control 3. Houston SPCA 4. Houston Humane Society 5. CAP - Citizens for Animal Protection Or check the following breed specific rescue organizations: www.petfinder.com www.adoptapet.com www.houstonpettalk.com/resources/rescue-groups/ We will also feature a dog in need as “The Adoptable Dog of the Month” in our Lakes on Eldridge newsletter in every issue. For any questions contact the Pet Safety Committee at www.lakesoneldridge. net or through i-neighbors.org

• If a long flowering period is desired, pansies should be placed in their permanent beds not later than this month. Fertilize monthly with manure, super-phosphate or a liquid high-phosphate product. Keep flowers picked for more bloom. • Take tulips out of cold storage and plant late this month. • Fertilize established trees, spring-blooming shrubs, spurias and sweet peas (after they are a foot tall) with a fertilizer such as 13-1313; Louisiana iris with cotton seed meal and manure. • Azaleas and camellias may be moved now. Keep moist to lesson cold weather damage. May acidify again. • Last month to plant early blossoming spring bulbs, speciosum and other varieties of lilies. Mulch. • Water plants well before a freeze; dry roots are easily damaged. • Don’t forget to provide food and fresh water for birds. More birds die from lack of water than lack of food.

Cypress-Fairbanks ISD was consolidated on Dec. 9, 1939, which means our 75th Anniversary is around the corner. The actual anniversary date is Dec. 9, 2014 and various projects are currently underway to make it a memorable 2014 - 2015 school year. Details are now available on the CFISD website at www.cfisd.net/75. The first event of the celebration will be a Diamond Jamboree at the Berry Center in August, 2014. During this event, we will identify 75 honorees and we need your help. The anniversary honoree designation committee is looking for people or families who have significantly impacted the CFISD community and district during the last 75 years. We want to particularly identify those that have truly captured the anniversary philosophy: “Our children. Our schools. Our community.” Please consider submitting a nomination and review the attached application. For more information on the anniversary, email 75th@ cfisd.net.

SCOUTS BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA COPPERHEAD DISTRICT
For 100 years, Scouting programs have instilled in youth the values found in the Scout Oath and Scout Law. Today, these values are just as relevant in helping youth grow to their full potential as they were in 1910. Scouting helps youth develop academic skills, selfconfidence, ethics, leadership skills, outdoor skills and citizenship skills that influence their adult lives.
Other Community groups include: Autumn Creek Baptist Church, Beck and Masten Automotive, Cornerstone United Methodist Church, Copperfield Church, Crossbridge Church, Cy-Fair Kiwanis Club, Deerfield Village HOA, LDS Bear Creek and Copperfield Wards, Middlegate Village HOA, Peace Community Church, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church and Thornton Middle School. Please contact Paul Cowan, Copperhead District Executive (713689-9703 or email eaglewithpalms@yahoo.com) to find join a Scouting unit near you.
BOY SCOUT TROOP 61
The Boy Scouts of America provides youth with programs and activities that allow them to: • Try new things. • Provide service to others. • Build self-confidence. • Reinforce ethical standards.
Young men between the ages of 11-18 are encouraged to visit Boy Scout Troop 61 at 7:00 PM Wednesday nights at Peace Community Church, 5151 Addicks Satsuma Road, Houston, Texas, 77084. They will get a hands-on experience of what Scouting has to offer and have the opportunity to visit with the Scouts and their adult leaders to learn more about the things the troop has done during meetings and activities.
Scouting provides youth with a sense that they are important as individuals while promoting activities that lead to personal responsibility and high self-esteem. As a result, when hard decisions have to be made, peer pressure can be resisted and the right choices can be made.
Scouting activities include camping, fishing, archery, rifle/shotgun shooting, hiking, first aid, wilderness survival, community service, citizenship, swimming, leadership, white-water rafting and much more. Troop 61 camps each month and has a group that goes to High Adventure Camp and to Merit Badge Camps each summer.
Scouting provides a rewarding experience for boys ages 5 to 21. Scouting through the local Packs and Troops teach outdoor and life skills which help our youth Be Prepared. Your area is serviced by the BSA Sam Houston Area Counsel - Copperhead District which includes 23 Cub Scout Packs (boys 5 to 10 years old), 13 Troops (boys from 11 to 18 years old) and 10 Venturing units (boys and girls from 14 to 21). RELAY FOR LIFE® TEAMS ALREADY FORMING FOR APRIL 25, 2014 EVENT!!
The American Cancer Society’s popular fundraising event in the fight against cancer, Relay For Life®, is now forming both business and personal teams for the April 25, 2014 Cy-Fair event. We are also seeking volunteers, cancer Survivors and CareGivers for the Cy-Fair Relay. Anyone interested in signing up or learning more about how you can help in the fight against cancer can go to www.relayforlife. org/cyfairtx. At Relay For Life® events, communities across the globe come together to honor cancer survivors, remember loved ones lost and fight back against a disease that has already taken too much. The funds you raise truly make a difference in the fight against cancer - just ask one of the nearly 14 million cancer survivors who will celebrate another birthday this year! Relay For Life® teams camp out overnight and take turns walking or running around a track or path at a local high school, park or fairground. Events are up to 24 hours long and because cancer never sleeps, each team is asked to have at least one participant on the track at all times. BOWLING TOURNAMENT! Who doesn’t love to bowl? The 5th Annual Relay For Life of Cy-Fair Bowling Tournament is now accepting registrations for individuals and teams! The tournament will be January 13, 2014 from 3 PM to 5 PM. “I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ? We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through December. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.
