Volunteers Needed for 2012 Falcon Ranch Events In previous years, Falcon Ranch residents have enjoyed community events and parties that have been organized by volunteer homeowners. A small budget is provided by the Homeowners Association but all of the work put into the events is done through volunteer efforts. If you would like to continue these events, we need your help. We need resident volunteers to organize events such as the Spring and Fall Garage Sales, a Falcon Ranch Funfest, a winter party or any other events that residents would like to organize. Volunteers of previous years have shared information to help future organizers and many residents may be interested in helping organizers with specific tasks. If you are interested in coordinating an event for Falcon Ranch, please contact Natalie Boyd at natboydtx@yahoo.com or call the Customer Care Line at 713-329-7171. You can also sign up for the committee by going to the web site (www.falconranchhoa.com). Thank you for volunteering!

KEYS Mentoring
One mentor, one student, one hour per week. KEYS brings adult role models into Katy ISD schools to motivate, encourage and inspire students on the brink of success. Mentors meet with their student on campus at a pre-designated time each week. As mentor and student build their relationship, they decide together how to spend their mentoring time. Whether spent playing games, reading or just talking, that one hour a week makes a tremendous difference in the life of a child.

Firethorne Leads the way as KEYS Platinum Sponsor Firethorne has committed to Katy ISD’s Partners in Education (PIE) as the first KEYS Scholarship Platinum Sponsor for 2011. As a KEYS sponsor, Firethorne is helping to create scholarships for students who have participated in KEYS through their senior year. This is the first year that PIE has opened sponsorship levels for KEYS, with 100 percent of the sponsorship dollars going directly to KEYS Scholarships. Former KEYS student Eduardo Reyes and his KEYS mentor Jim Burns visited Firethorne representatives last week to thank them for their generous support. The KEYS (Keep Encouraging Youth toward Success) mentor program is offered to Katy ISD students who are on the brink of success. Often, these students have been challenged by life circumstances outside of their control. Mentors meet with their students on campus each week during the school year, in between the school day. When Reyes’ mentor first met him, it wasn’t with the intent of becoming his mentor, it was with the intent of helping him organize his backpack, locker and life. After several weeks of helping Reyes get organized, Burns naturally fell into the role of becoming his mentor. For the next six years, Burns helped Reyes recognize his gifts, talents, intelligence and encouraged him to pursue his dreams. Firethorne, a 1,400-acre residential community in Katy/Fulshear, is actively involved with Katy ISD through programs such as Junior Achievement and the Partners in Education annual Promise to Read and Food for Families programs. Firethorne is located near the crossroads of I-10 west and FM 1463. KEYS’ annual event Ties & Tiaras, hosted at Agave Road on March 1, 2012, will celebrate mentors while supporting the KEYS Scholarship Fund. Featuring student performances throughout the come-andgo event, the 2012 Mentors of the Year will also be announced. KEYS is brought to you by Partners in Education, the department that brings the community into the classroom. For more information about KEYS and to find out how you can get involved, visit the KEYS web page at www.katyisd.org, or contact Martha Brown at 281-396-2468.

Demographic Update Shows Continued Growth for Katy ISD
During the October 24th Board of Trustees meeting, Dr. Pat Guseman, president of Population and Survey Analysts (PASA), presented the 2011 Demographic Update that shows steady growth for Katy ISD, at a rate of approximately three percent each year over the next five years. While slightly slower than the rapid growth experienced between 2001 and 2009, the report shows approximately 23,000 additional students moving to the district during the next 10 years. The district also announced that as part of the Long Range Facilities Plan process, Katy ISD has entered into the initial stages of the Attendance Boundary Modification (ABM) process. Last November, Katy ISD voters approved a bond referendum that included five new campuses – three elementary schools, one junior high and one high school. Four of the five campuses are set to open in fall 2012 and High School No. 7 is slated to open in fall 2013. Katy ISD is a TEA Recognized district serving more than 62,000 students. Covering 181 square miles west of downtown Houston, Katy ISD is comprised of 53 campuses and with more than 8,000 employees is one of the largest employers in the West Houston area.

GIFTED STUDENTS GET CREATIVE WITH TRASH Hundreds of gifted and talented elementary students enjoyed getting together at the Katy Parents of Gifted & Talented (KPGT) GT Create Date, to make puppets out of recyclable materials. Students and parents let their imaginations loose as they turned trash to treasure at this fun event co-sponsored by KPGT and KISD. Led by professional puppeteer Greg Ruhe from Puppet Pizzazz and professional artist Taylor Perry, the children enjoyed an inspiring and hilarious puppet show before launching into their own creations. The Katy Parents of Gifted and Talented (KPGT) organization was formed in 1987. It is a non-profit organization. KPGT aims promote the welfare of gifted and talented students by empowering KISD families and educators with information, resources, tools and voice to ensure opportunities that encourage gifted students’ passion for learning. Further information is available on KPGT’s website at www.kpgt.org.

Under the direction of club co-presidents Ashley Ramsey and Selena Ibeig, the group collected 1,369 cans for their local chapter. The response was phenomenal and group members say they exceeded their expectations. The students gathered at the Red Oak Grill on Mason Road in Katy on the evening of Halloween to drop off and package the goods. They also enjoyed a nice meal and held a costume contest, judged by the restaurant‘s employees. Later, they counted and transferred the cans into boxes and loaded them into two big trucks to be delivered to Katy Christian Ministries. Group members say they are happy to do their part to assist the local food banks that are already stretching their resources to meet growing demands in a weak economy.

RECIPES Texas Brisket INGREDIENTS: 3 1/2 fluid ounces liquid smoke flavoring 1/4 cup ketchup 1 (10 fluid ounce) bottle steak sauce, (e.g. Heinz 57) 1 (3 pound) beef brisket DIRECTIONS: Line a shallow roasting pan with aluminum foil. Place the brisket on the foil. Stir together the steak sauce, liquid smoke and ketchup. Pour half of the mixture over the brisket, then turn the meat over and pour sauce over the other side. Wrap tightly in a double layer of aluminum foil. Refrigerate for at least 24 hours. Preheat the oven to 250 degrees F (120 degrees C). Let the roast stand at room temperature while the oven preheats to take off some of the chill. Bake for 6 or 7 hours in the preheated oven. You can leave it in even longer if you turn the oven down to 200 degrees F (95 degrees C). Remove brisket from the oven and slice across the grain. Return to the roasting pan and serve with sauce. Every Fort Bend County baby born during this week may receive a special baby book bag, courtesy of the Friends of Fort Bend County Library. Each bag
contains a book, a bib, a special certificate, a list of suggested reading for children and information on parenting and on library services. These bags represent the library system’s commitment to providing library services for county residents throughout their lives, beginning at birth. LIBRARIES ANNOUNCE ADDITION OF FAMILY READING CLUB THIS WINTER The popularity of Fort Bend County Libraries’ Summer Reading Clubs for children, teens and adults has inspired the library system to add a similar program for families during the winter season. The Family Reading Club will begin on Saturday, January 21, 2012 and will continue for six weeks through March 3, 2012 at all branches in the Fort Bend County library system. This six-week program is designed to encourage families to read, learn and have fun together. All Fort Bend County families are eligible to participate. Families who read 36 books or 6 hours – 6 books per week or 60 minutes per week – will be entered into a drawing for a $50 dining gift card, donated by the Friends of the Library. Each branch library will have a drawing for the gift card on March 5, 2012. A single registration is required for each participating family. An adult (parent or guardian) is asked to register the family online by going to the library’s website and clicking on the “Family Reading Club Sign-Up” image, which will become available January 20, 2012. Families may also register at one of the libraries in the Fort Bend County library system. Upon registering, families will then have their own online page on which to record their books or reading time.

Become a Tutor-Understand our Student’s Lifelines Become an essential part of a student’s life by signing up to be a tutor for the Literacy Council! The Literacy Council of Fort Bend County holds tutor training every other month. The next training will be in January. After 12 hours of training, outstanding volunteers are equipped to teach Basic Literacy and English as a Second Language (ESL) classes to adults. The trainings prepare tutors to organize and compile lesson plans, learn about various tutoring techniques, understand the purpose of the Literacy Council and much more. Tutors do not need knowledge of any foreign language, nor do they need formal teaching experience. We offer many locations for tutoring throughout the area, including locations in Katy. Tutoring sessions are offered during the day and at night. If you are interested in impacting someone’s life by being their tutor, please contact the Literacy Council at 281-240-8181 or visit the website at www.ftbendliteracy.org. Help us to “Change Lives Through Literacy!”

If the call goes unanswered, the computer will call back 3 times at 15-minute intervals. If there is still no answer, the sheriff will dispatch a deputy or the local police. They will have with them a print out of information on the person that is not responding to the calls. This program was established by FBC Sheriff Milton Wright, Commissioner’s Court and Ken Whitt (FBC Sheriff’s Citizens Academy Alumni Assoc.) in 1998. Many police chiefs in the county are also participating in the program and will proceed with the welfare check for citizens of their community. To request more information or to enroll in this free and very beneficial program, please call the Sheriff’s dept. at 281-341-4704.

We are a Christcentered non-residential program working with troubled teens and their parents. Our six month program is set up to provide weekly counseling for the teens and parents. This family system is designed to start with children at the age of 5 through 18 teaching authority, consequences, affirmation and being consistent and correct as parents. We have certified F.AM.I.L.Y. Rules Counselors available to assist you. Our volunteers have been screened with background checks and approved by the Fort Bend Juvenile Probation Department.
