GARDEN TIPS FOR SEPTEMBER
On Thursday, September 3, 2015, Nottingham Country Garden Club (NCGC) will feature Judy Ulke from Enchanted Forest Landscapes. Judy’s presentation will be “Enjoying a Night Blooming Garden.” She will discuss the many plants that bloom exclusively at night or wait until evening to release their wonderful fragrance. Judy Ulke is the owner of Enchanted Forest in Richmond, Texas and has spent her whole life in the gardening industry. Her parents started their first nursery back in 1976 and 3 out of their 5 children are now in the business themselves.
Time now to make plans for fall landscaping projects. • Clean up flowerbeds of fallen foliage, yellowed leaves and dead wood. Light green leaves may signify lack of iron (chlorosis). Correct with iron cheleates. • Cut off old dead foliage on irises. Scratch in a little bone meal around the roots. • Prune roses to reshape and groom plants for fall growth. Follow up with a dose of fertilizer the first week of September. • Plants come out of summer rest and go crazy. Insect populations explode as we get into cooler temperatures. Diseases that have been dormant wake up. - Citrus, croton, avocado and mango are susceptible to spider mites and thrips. Discourage them with a strong jet of water from a hose directed to the undersides of the leaves. - Hibiscus, citrus, palms, gardenia and ixora are susceptible to scale and mealybug. • Winter vegetable gardens and perennials get planted. • Wait until November to plant petunias and pansies. • Fire ants baits should be put out in September-October to lessen the number of eggs that make it to Spring. • St. Augustine grass gets its fall fertilizer during September. Continue to mow at maximum height. You want to leave a lot of leaf surface to produce carbohydrate reserves for the winter. • Keep an eye out for sod webworms. First sign of them is grass that appears to stop growing. You need to get them early for biological controls to work. When the caterpillars are only 1/4 inch, Bacillus thuringiensis applications can slow them. Bt is a bacteria that works on the caterpillars’ digestive systems and makes them stop feeding. Do the application late in the day. The larvae feed at night and you want them to get nice fresh Bt. • When the heat and drought end, the weather could bring brown patch disease in the St. Augustine grass. Watch for yellowish spots if the nights drop into the 60’s and days stay in the 80’s.

The Board - which is made up of solely Falcon Ranch homeowners - wants to hear resident concerns, but due to time constraints, open-session discussions must be limited. Zach, Braden and Daniel were all key members of the Cinco Ranch High School Boys Varsity Bowling Team. Zach was the team captain in 2013 and 2015. Braden will be the team captain in 2016. The team was the Katy ISD District Champ in 2013, 2014 and 2015 and the Regional Champ in 2014 and 2015. The CRHS team placed 7th in the qualifying round in the Texas High School Bowling Club Tournament in San Antonio in 2014. The team placed 6th in the qualifying round in the state tournament in Fort Worth in 2015. Zach and Braden represented Katy ISD in the Texas All District Bowling Tournament in College Station in 2013. Daniel joined them in 2014 and 2015. KISD placed 1st in the qualifying round in 2014, then lost in the 1st match play round. KISD placed 9th in 2015. Times Square Entertainment hosts the KISD high school bowling program and the Saturday morning youth scholarship league. NEW HOPE CHILD DEVELOPMENT CENTER New Hope Child Development Center ended another fun year with many joyful celebrations including Splash Day and Graduation ceremony. Our “Big Kids” sang and danced their hearts out to a very proud audience of parents and students. There was lots of laughter with a few tears mixed in. We are always sad to see our children grow up and move on but we’ve been doing this for nearly 35 years so you would think we would be used to this by now! Our year was sprinkled with many community outreach projects benefiting Pregnancy Help Center’s Connor’s Closet, JoJo’s Bears, Eternal Food Ministries, Souper Bowl of Caring and several Homeless ministries. We are looking forward to another exciting school year. We have openings in our young 2’s class (18-23 months) and our Bridge class. We also have several employment opportunities as well. Registration for our 5-on-5 season will begin in September. KYB has developed a new website and registration platform and will now be offering parents the ability to complete all their registration needs online, prior to our walk-up registration, which is now optional. However, KYB will continue to host a walk-up registration for those who prefer to register in person. KYB offers a 5-on-5 league for boys and girls of all skill levels who are currently enrolled in 1st-8th grades and who reside within the Katy ISD attendance boundaries. Practices will begin in November and games will begin in January.

Singers, dancers and Instrumentalists are invited to join the “Grace Notes” a performing group which shares music with the elderly in retirement homes, Alzheimer’s and nursing facilities and community events. We sing a combination of secular, patriotic and sacred music. We also sing once a month on Sunday morning for the congregation of St. Peter’s UMC. We rehearse during the school year on Tuesday mornings at 9:30 AM at St. Peter’s UMC. Babysitting is provided. Tuesday mornings are also our “outing”

The following programs are available: Children (4 yrs-1st grade) are invited to join the Cherubs music program and children (grades 2-5) are invited to join the Choristers music program. The children will learn to read music, sing in a healthy vocal style and play chimes and other instruments. The Coastal Prairie Chapter, Texas Master Naturalists has a membership of 85 outdoor enthusiasts. For the last 10 years, chapter members have enjoyed learning together and sharing their love of the outdoors with others. The chapter is part of a state-wide Master Naturalist organization consisting of 8,140 volunteers in 44 local chapters with a total of over 2 million service hours as of 2012! Statewide TMN volunteers have impacted or conducted projects on approximately 195,700 acres of habitat while also developing or maintaining some 1,775 miles of interpretive trails. The Texas Master Naturalists program is sponsored by Texas Parks and Wildlife Department and Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service. Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Dept. has a computer-generated program called “Are You OK?” (RUOK). It is a computer-generated call intended for senior citizens (over 55) and disabled persons who live alone and could benefit from a daily check. A computer will generate a call each morning, at about the same time and the participant chooses a time frame. A voice will ask, “Are you OK?” After this, all they have to do is hang up the phone. If the participant goes out of town or leaves the residence for any time, you just temporarily unsubscribe and re-subscribe when you return. If the call goes

Laws are written to ensure that owned animals are confined to their property or kept on a leash to free a community of unrestrained and free-roaming animals. Although most dog bites occur on the property where the dog lives, unrestrained or free-roaming dogs do pose a substantial threat to the public. In addition, unrestrained animals are at increased risk of being bitten by rabies infected wildlife. Enforcement of restraint laws is essential in enhancing the animal control program’s efforts to reduce the risk of rabies in our community. LICENSING OF DOGS AND CATS The primary benefit of licensing animals is identification, should that animal become lost. Licensing also: • Ensures that rabies vaccination are current. • Allows for quick identification in case of a bite incident. • Provides revenue to offset the administration costs of the animal control program. VACCINATION Rabies vaccinations are a prerequisite for licensing dogs and cats because they are an important control measure for the public health threat of rabies. In addition to protecting pets, rabies vaccinations provide a barrier between infected wild animals and humans.

We went looking for recipes for the National Cheese Pizza Day and the Acorn Squash Day this month. Enjoy! FOUR CHEESE MARGHERITA PIZZA
CHEESY ACORN SQUASH
INGREDIENTS: 1/4 cup olive oil 1 tablespoon minced garlic 1/2 teaspoon sea salt 8 Roma tomatoes, sliced 2 (12 inch) pre-baked pizza crusts 8 ounces shredded Mozzarella cheese 4 ounces shredded Fontina cheese 10 fresh basil leaves, washed, dried 1/2 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese 1/2 cup crumbled feta cheese
INGREDIENTS: 1 acorn squash, halved and seeded 3 tablespoons butter 1 cup diced celery 1 cup finely chopped onion 1 cup fresh mushrooms, sliced 1/8 teaspoon salt 1 pinch ground black pepper 1 teaspoon chopped parsley 1/2 cup shredded Cheddar cheese
DIRECTIONS: Stir together olive oil, garlic and salt; toss with tomatoes and allow to stand for 15 minutes. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F. Brush each pizza crust with some of the tomato marinade. Sprinkle the pizzas evenly with Mozzarella and Fontina cheeses. Arrange tomatoes overtop, then sprinkle with shredded basil, Parmesan and feta cheese. DIRECTIONS: Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Place squash cut side down in a glass dish. Cook in microwave for 20 minutes on HIGH, until almost tender. In a saucepan over medium heat, melt butter and add celery and onion; saute until transparent. Stir in mushrooms; cook 2 to 3 minutes more. Sprinkle with salt, pepper and parsley. Divide mixture in half, spoon into the squash and cover. Cook 15 minutes in the preheated oven. Uncover, sprinkle with cheese and put back in the oven until the cheese bubbles.
